  • As a business graduate whose brain was melting playing around with tabs in an Excel sheet, I decided to learn to code. In this video I detail my 3 month journey.

    That's really cool.
I am 52yo and learned C++ all by myself in 1991-1992.
This led me to code damn cool systems and understand how the system worked under the hood.
Fast forward to present day, I am running my own business since 22+ years and everything had been paid by writing code, specs, and stuff related to code in this beauty of a place I would never ever have dreamed of when I was debugging low level concurrent serial port code in the corner of the bedroom. Code is power.

@@bassplayer807 It depends on many factors. What do you want to learn, where do you want to work, what background do you have and how can you represent yourself? Also how smart are you and how used to teaching yourself are you?
Search for a promising technology and start to learn it. Maybe think about a small project you'd like to do and work on it. At the same time you should learn about coding fundamentals and good coding practices.
Good luck and keep on it. Learning to code is hard in the beginning, but the longer you keep going the more rewarding it will be :)

@@clowndriver5576 yea I eventually went that route. I went to code bootcamp though. With art it still depends on the kind of art you major in. A lot of people who don’t major in industrial or graphic or interior design are screwed lol

    His advices are pretty practical.
Grab that book and learn your basics! And drill those leetcode, but 300 of them is too much... 100 should be more than enough as long as your practices are deliberate.
If you want those good size company and good salary, you will need those basics and leetcode - unless you have got some super duper awesome unforgettable projects.

I just graduated from an engineering degree and I find most entry-level engineering jobs require a some what decent level of coding experience. Since last year during lockdown, I have been trying to learn how to code and create simple applications, but I get really lazy and unmotivated at times. Yea but leetcode problems are way over my level :( My friends said its because my understanding of Data structures and algo is not strong. What are some books you might recommend and how do you stay focused?

The gift that you have, and I'm sure you're aware of this on some level, is that you know what you want (you knew you didn't want to do front-end web development, and that you wanted something specifically related to finance), and you have the drive and the wherewithal to do it. I want to learn to code really mainly to move on from the retail job that I have, and also to hopefully be involved in game development someday. Is there a language you would recommend for that specifically? C++ is intimidating to me and I've also been given to understand that you should really know more than one anyway, so I've already bought a book on Python, but like you, I don't really want to do web development.

Probably the best video I've watched so far. Would love it if you can share your syllabus on the topics you've covered in the 3 months (high level). I'd offer to pay for it ;P

Your method is exactly what i did but with python (minus books, because python is luckily quite easy and doing pet projects is enough) after a corporate finance degree. Now, i'm leading towards c++ and wanted some guidance and it seems that my initial method could work again, but with a bit more efforts :)
I am also strangely confused by the fact that this video has been posted on my birthday haha

For finance...or let's say trading application ( e.g. : quant) developers, do you think Python would be easier for beginner ?
