Samurai Warriors was my childhood. I remember spending hours playing the first game during my elementary and middle school years.Yukimura and Nobunaga were my all time favorite characters and the battle of Honnoji and Osaka were my favorite levels. I’m happy that someone is giving these games some love.

My childhood was samurai warriors 2, i remember trying to connect the lines and actually figure out who won which battle as an elementary student, those days were so fun!

problem is combat too easy repeat , monster too easy , if die you can not play in checkpoint , the world have nothing , they can add something you can pick , move or use to kill enemy

While I agree Koshosho's design is quite ridiculous for the series, Gracia's at least has roots in Japanese and historical fashion. Her SW4 dress is a fusion of Tudor-period gowns(this is apparent in the details of her upper torso and arms) and modern-day Japanese lolita fashion, which is more apparent in the skirt design and her hairstyle. Tudor is right in the same time period that the Sengoku Jidai occurred so I was pleasantly surprised by the design. I think the intent would have been made much more clear if she had the giant neck ruff that was in high fashion at the time. It's a massive improvement over her horrendous design in SW3.

I grew up on the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors games, and my favorites are the Empires spinoffs. Ever since I could walk and talk I've loved Ancient China and Feudal Japan as well as the Samurai specifically on top of loving and practicing marital arts.
When I discovered these games I was completely enthralled. I even went out of my way to read Romance of the Three Kingdoms as well as learn as much about the Samurai as I could on top of that.
Although I recognize their flaws, I still hold these series close to my heart when it comes to video games that I love. This is a bit of a side-note, but I also really loved the Kessen games. Although Kessen II was terribly inaccurate in various ways and silly as hell in others, I still have to say it's my favorite of the three in the series.
I also really like the strategy series they made under the same name as the text that inspired it. I've only played the most recent of the Nobunaga's Ambition games, but I enjoy it just as much.
When it comes to my beloved experiences with these specific games, Koei could do no wrong in that era. The only more recent game of theirs that I've played that I didn't like was Dynasty Warriors 9, but the less known about that travesty the better as far as I'm concerned lol :P

    11:19 YES!
to this day I still miss Samurai Warriors 2 Empires. used to play it every Sunday morning til late afternoon with friends, making our own officers and racing to get to that level 20 (or whatever the max level was), geting upgrading and putting elements on the weapons, unlocking moves, mounts, formations, cutscenes recruiting characters, suppressing rebellions, and more!
the "Goofy" voice was amazing 😂 we'd conquer and unify the land as ninjas / monks.
Musashi Miyamoto was my favorite characters. loved it whenever he says "I am invincible!" and he was whenever I played as him.
oh man this comment ended up being long and like a time machine while typing it.
thank you for the great video!

Dude, great channel! I've been binge watching in for the last couple of days. By the way, check out Kessen III. It's about Nobunaga Oda's rise to power, that led to his inevitable (or is it?!) downfall. One of the few games that depicts him not as an evil guy aka The Demon King, but as a romantic (yet controversial) national hero of Japan and a dreamer. Which he undoubtedly was. Extremely underappriciated game. Again: great channel, thanks for the great content. Keep up the good work! Sorry for not great english (if it is, i'm not a native) and hello from Belarus!

Kessen III is a “what if” story of Oda Nobunaga escaping Honnoji and survives to continue his reign all over Japan alongside his faithful vassals as well as his wife, Kicho/Lady No (she’s no longer the deranged temptress who wants to enjoy Hell)

I'm a big fan of warriors games starting from Dynasty Warriors 2. I really love Samurai Warriors series too, my favorite character is Hattori Hanzo . My opinions about each entry:
SW: Nice start up but couldn't find its identity yet
    SW2: Really good improvement.
Sw3: I only could play this on emulator maybe that is the reason I didn't like it that much
SW4 and SW4-II: Finally serie found its identity, gameplay is much more enjoyable in my opinion
Spirit of Sanada: This game is best in every aspect even surpassed Dynasty Warriors, especially considering how dissapointing DW9 is. I'm not even fan of Yukimura but this game is perfect, hope they make similar game for Oda Clan
Didn't plyed previous Empires titles but SW4 Empires is one of my favorite Samurai Warriors title. It is so much fun customizing famous but generic looking samurais (like Takeda retainers) and conquering whole region.

I grew up with Dynasty warriors 4. When i first got the game from block busters, I was hooked and once I got the game, both myself and my cousins would spend hours and hours playing this. My favorite battle being Hulao gate! But once I discovered samurai warriors a decade later, I was hooked! The metal music, characters, and just the battles filled with hundreds of npcs! I only wish the newer titles were closer to their predecessors.

I love this series so much! I actually got the Platinum Trophy for SW4 a few days ago! I'm no expert like you, but I love the Sengoku period. I normally do my own research because I know the games aren't historically accurate, but that's part of the fun, too! I love making Nobunaga survive Honnõji and unify Japan.
Have you played Nioh? It's another Koei game (by Team Ninja) in style of Dark Souls but during the Sengoku era. Full of supernatural stuff, but really interesting!

I absolutely agree with it being to much anime inspired. I think it does need some anime inspiration because it differentiates them. But it needs to be more realistic samurai depictions. I've wanted it for so long. Real life Samurai armor is amazing and needs no over glorification.

Somehow, it manages to fix the misconception that Sanada Yukimura served Takeda Shingen during his lifetime by having Masayuki Sanada take center stage during the first levels of the game and then, Sanada Yukimura goes on to take center stage (as he always does in every Samurai Warriors game)

Great review of the series. I do agree with your analysis of the character designs. The earlier games had better designs than the newer ones. It has gone way too anime inspired with overly saturated colors.
And I agree. Samurai Warriors 2 Empires was the peak!

As i grow up i started to play more warriors games, such as Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, and i still love them. In fact i know a lot of Sengoku samurai stories thru these games and find them fascinating
It's kind of a shame that Sengoku Basara doesn't have its west release anymore, but at least we still got the Warriors series still going strong, especially with One Piece added in the franchise which is also a really good one since I'm already a One Piece fan in the first place

Love the Warriors games, and Ginchyo is my favorite of all the characters. She’s a shocking strong fighter in a series where pole arms and ranged weapons dominate while she had a short range weapon. Maybe because she’s fast as lightning (see? Two electricity puns, so you know I’ve played her quite a bit.)

I'm finishing Spirit of Sanada and it's amazing. Obviously it's not perfect, but storywise, it conveys what it wants to convey so well. I'm looking forward to what you'll say about the Battle of Sanada Maru, Yukimura's finest hour. If you did all the side content, collected all the special accessories and equipped and leveled Yukimura well, you will truly witness the might of the Sanada. Seriously, no other Samurai Warriors game has come close to showcasing the legend of Yukimura Sanada as well as this

Thank you so much for the awesome review of the Samurai Warriors series! 🤩 I’ve been a fan of the Samurai Warriors series since the first game for the PS2 and played mostly all of the games (except SW2, SW3:Empires version). This game series actually got me interested in learning more of the Sengoku Era history. 😃I’m so happy that you liked playing SW2:Empires! To be honest, I liked that empire game more than the SW4:Empires. 😊 My favorite chapters to play is The Legend of the Oda, The Legend of the Sanada and The Battle of Sekigahara. 💖 My favorite samurais in the game are Yukimura, Mitsunari, Mitsuhide, Magoichi, Kunoichi, Takatora, Yoshitsugu and a few others. However, is it true that Yoshitsugu and Mitsunari were close friends in reality during the Sengoku Era or was that just in the game? 🤔 Thank you so much for the upload! I’m definitely subscribing to your channel. 😃 P.S. You should definitely check out the Nioh and Sengoku Basara game series when you have free time. 😊

Got hook on SW2 back then and started playing this games even now. I read from a japanese article that they have plans for sw5. But looks like they are still in the planning process and it may still take years for a JP released then followed by global released

  • @gargadon

I discovered SW3 for the Wii in 2013, and man... The first time I tried, I didn't understand how to play it. But for some reason, I tried again, and again, and again... And now, technically, it's my most favorite game franchise. Even I can say certain events of my life in this month are extremely tied to this game franchise.
I think Spirit of Sanada was how the SW future could be, and not what we had with SW5. Actually, I'm afraid what Koei Tecmo will do with SW as its 20th Anniversary is approaching.
If SW was historically accurate, I wouldn't have my favorite character in his early years: Musashi Miyamoto. I don't know, I like him because he's introduced like a young guy searching for his own path in that turbulent era, instead of a plenty wise aged man like most manga, anime, and doramas show him. By the way, I think Gracia's outfit is most like a gothic lolita reimagined in the Sengoku Jidai. And I like her.
Good video, as a SW fan, you describe what exactly how this franchise really is, with its goals and fails.
    Greetings from Mexico.
PS: I like you chose Musashi Miyamoto as your video thumbnail image.

8:01 I was going to recommend "Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes" or "Sengoku Basara 4: Sumeragi" since I believe they have the best combat of any Warriors style game, but since the Sengoku Basara games are a much more "anime" take on the Sengoku Period than the Samurai Warriors games you might not have a lot of fun looking at them haha.
That aside I'd still be interested in seeing a "Spirit of Sanada" video from you at some point.

Will you do a review of Bushido Blade? Probably the best game I've played due to how injuries impact the characters and how they must follow the bushido in order to pass each level. My sole complaint about Bushido Blade is that it wasn't given a historical setting with historical figures. I've only played the first sequel to it, and because of how they changed the injury rules I lost interest.

Pretty much the same opinion, I have a lot of fun with these games, but would never try to seriously argue that they are Great Games... just that they can be a great time depending on one's personal taste and level of interest in any of the given settings, whether it's Sengoku Jidai or Zelda or whatever. I need to play 4, I haven't probably due to playing Hyrule Warriors instead basically, but after hearing that it has its own completely new way of doing the story mode, I'm interested.
I have to say that while I get what you're saying about the over the top female characters... I also think it doesn't make sense to focus only on the female noncombatants, when all the same criticisms apply to the various 'advisor' or 'strategist' type characters who also would never have participated in battle and are given various magic weapons or straight up magic as a weapon to clearly show this, just like is done with all the female characters who would never have been in battle, going back to the original old Dynasty Warriors games... it probably has something to do with you coming at these with all the history already in mind, and I didn't in any serious way when I played these, too, though. In any event I would personally find it TRAGIC if they had decided not to have so many cute girls in these games available to play, simply for this reason ; )

We're pretty much the same, our friends even some of my brothers didn't really appreciate the gameplay and even the game itself, they played it for couple of stages then I see them yawning or at times mocking the names of the characters, only my elder brother who understood the game as much as I do, sadly by time he gradually lost his interest in this game, but heck if you'd been my friend I'll play from SW1 to sw4 with you hahaha it's the sw2 that I had the most fun and still my favourite SW1 is the most nostalgic and toughest. 3 is bad for me, I don't know I just don't like how 3 turned out and not to mention the console and FPS, 4 is fine but I didn't really like the dash attacks charge attack were used to be, it became OP and repetitive.

8:00 I will point out that the depiction of female characters in warriors games wasnt always that... off.
Can you guess when it took a downturn?
Not even joking when I say it was with the merger with tecmo... and sadly most of the SW games came after or during said merger.
The biggest example of this is actually in the DW series... with Sun Shang Xiang, a character who used to be considered an equal to her siblings and father, even leading Wu in some of the games, who took no shit...
and then the Tecmo merger happened, and the very next DW game had her as a whimpering waif who could not bring herself to go against her husband, with her personality reduced to a fiery tomboy who turns into a feminine obedient wife the moment she meets Liu Bei.
Reminder that Naotora Li, the BIGGEST offender of this in the SW games is basically a glorified Dead Or Alive character that is there exclusively to be shitty fanservice.... actually she literally IS a Dead or Alive character just guest starring in SW, with how much push she gets in DOA over SW.
Hell, just look at the original designs for Ina, or Ginchiyo Tachibana (who mercifully avoided the worst of it) and compare it to the designs in SW 4.
... or any of the DW female cast early designs VS what they look like now.
Not saying there did not use to be fanservice characters... but holy fuck it all got much worst after Tecmo got involved.

Horrible games, play Sengoku Basara instead. Sengoku Basara is basically Samurai Warriors in good, in almost every aspect. The only problem I have with Basara, which is better in the warrior games, is Nobunaga, I'm simply not a fan of the Demon King depiction of him.

The first game was released as Devil Kings in the west and the third one (the first I played) as Sengoku BASARA: Samurai Heroes. The second and fourth game (and all expansion re-releases) were only released in Japan, as well as the latest spin off Sengoku BASARA Sanada Yukimura-den, which I'm currently playing.
Sengoku Basara 4 and its expansion Sumeragi are the best in terms of gameplay but they are lacking a bit in story because they don't have a major event like the Battle of Sekigahara in Samurai Heroes that ties all characters together. Also, as they are in japanese, I can only understand some/most parts of the story.

@The Shogunate If you don't like over the top parts of SW than you won't like Basara. It has way more over the top parts than SW.

@ShinTensei There is a bad localization of the first game, but that doesn't really count. The 3rd game also got a western release and it was the first time I have heard about the series. I also imported the 4th, it's rerelease with extra content and Sanada Yukimura-den from Japan.

I played SW2 since I was a child and got hooked because of the Sengoku history that was conveyed in a game medium. It's very entertaining. I am so happy I got to know your account coz I get to know more about the samurais!!
