ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this TH-cam journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. Another artist bought by Daniel Smiths amazing marketing team. You were a out and out WINSOR girl….and never once even mentioned Daniel smith,….and you want us now to believe that you have been painting away with them for a full year? I’m an artist and I use some of these and some of that and that….and that’s how it is with true artists. Every professional brand has something fantastic to offer. It’s sad really, that beginners see these videos and run to the shops to buy.

It's funny because I missed that on the first read and it gave me pause because I absolutely bristle at the idea that being a "true artist" is in any way an elite or exclusive group of people who either "belong" or not. Nothing could be further from the truth. Perhaps that's an idea for another youtube video lol because I definitely have strong feelings about that. Art belongs to us all and there is no benchmark, supplies, technique, talent or otherwise that make someone an artist worthy of the title or not. And besides, many of the greatest artists in history from Vermeer to Van Gogh were rejected and criticized during their lifetime, so what does that say about people's ability to see into the value of something that is ahead of it's time 😉
Patty-I love watching you swatch. I'm learning so much from you about colors and tones. I like how you explain the techniques as you go. We can hear and see at the same time. Thank you for showing which colors work well with skintones. I struggle with that. ❤

I like the way you describe the colours and suggest how you would use them
Love your channel. I have a mix of WN and DS paints. I use the phthalos for mixing interesting greens. I use Goethite much more than I thought I would. It's a nice color for beaches and landscapes. I have a Sap Green Deep that I like, similar to Perylene Green but not quite as gray. I love DS blue chromium. All in all, this is a nice set to purchase. Would you consider doing a video on how you use your manneqin in your artwork? I have considered purchasing one, but have not been sure what type is best or how much I would use it. Thanks so much.
Hi DeeAnn! That's a great question and a great video idea! I definitely have a LOT of thoughts on the mannequin. (His name is Rudy by the way lol) I think it's a terrific tool in general but being someone who paints ballet dancers as my primary subject... I'll just say that the mobility and mechanics of it don't exactly coincide with what is expected of ballerinas 😉 But yes, will definitely do a video all about that and show what this particular mannequin can (and can't) do. Xo!

I agree with Margot. Even if I’m just playing around making paint marks because it’s therapeutic I use my professional paints. If you can afford some buy them. 🥰
Your swatch videos stand out from others in that you mention ways to use them relative to subject manner, granularity, warmth, and even (in other videos) flow/workability compared to your preferred equivalents from other brands. One thing you didn't mention much in this video was the distinct difference in granularity this set expressed compared to the Wang set you reviewed, and perhaps your overall expectations for Daniel Smith.
Personally, I thought the Wang set, in your swatching anyway, exhibited some of the less appealing aspects of DS granulation, looking almost chunky. In my own use, with some of the same colors, they can look better. Perhaps a quick painting, or a second follow-up video, would help illustrate what they would be like in your skilled hands.

You’re correct that the Paul Wang tube set had a lot more granulation than this set. Not sure if the way the pigments settled in the pans had anything to do with it but DS definitely is way more granular than a lot of other paints that I work with. Generally speaking I don’t let granulation affect my choices. However, I have noticed that for some colors, I’m more forgiving whereas others (like cerulean or ultramarine) I have no tolerance for even slight granulation. Love your idea of taking the Paul Wang set for a spin and discussing this more. I’ll put it on my to-do list. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your time and excitement about this new palette. Your swatching and comments were very enjoyable as usual. 😊 I haven't decided why watching these are so calming to me???? I 've worked my way up from inexpensive no name paints to several high quality artists grade brands and I feel it was a predictable right of passage in order to appreciate the higher quality paints. If I had the funds years ago I would have started immediately with #1 W&N, #2 DS, #3 Schmincke etc. As you said, each brand has several exceptional paints, everyone has different tastes, and everyone has a different style of painting. I always look forward to your videos. 🤩

Thanks so much for swatching these paints, it was really enjoyable to hear how you may use these colors as you painted beautiful eggs! I also started out with Winsor & Newton professional watercolors in design school, they were the only option then, but discovered Daniel Smith paints about 20 years ago at the DS art supply store here in Seattle and love them dearly. I still have a few WN favs, like their Cerulean Blue (more tropical than the DS Cerulean Chromium which I also love), Smalt and Winsor Violet. The Jean Haines is a great collection with so many unique DS colors, like Cascade Green which evokes the mist among the pine trees in the Cascade Mountains foothills, just one of my many DS favorites. I'm looking forward to your future paintings with this collection. So glad your pregnancy is going well, imo cravings are usually your body knowing best what it needs :)
Thank you for your kind words and you're so right that these cravings are such a weird way of the body telling you what it needs. Crazy science! Our preferences coincide! I love W&N Cerulean blue too and consider that my gold standard for Ceruleans! Also adore the Jean Haines collection and I actually just finished a video swatching all of those as well so maybe we're linked psychically? 😉😂

Love how you describe the colors as you lay them down. Personally I love to swatch all of my mediums, but especially watercolors.

There is soooo much quality paint available now world wide! I found some gorgeous paints from Spain, Poland as well as Turkey and Croatia(which took eons to arrive)

@@Pointebrush The paints from Poland are made by Roman Szmal, the watercolor as well as soft pastel comes fromArtmiranda and gorgeous soft pastel from MAMUT PASTELS! THE Turkish watercolor is made by Zehr Art Studio in Bursa! There are also gorgeous soft pastel from Croatia hand made by GORDAN BECIN! I waited an eternity before they arrived but it’s great having some really unique and beautiful paints from all around the world😊😌🥰👍🏻🥇
Have you tried A. Gallo in Italy? And DaVinci here in California. Creamy dreamy scrumptious
@@LCLand Gallo is overpriced to the max and I don’t think it compares to my Michael Harding color which I think is the premier watercolor line for me!

Just before you mentioned your paper towel I was thinking I should do a series of blotter paintings using masa paper - totally accidental abstracts.
Love abstract painting and yes, that’s a terrific idea!
People consider Daniel Smith paints expensive, but are they? Because the paints are so heavily pigmented, a little goes a very long way, as Margot indicates. If you buy a cheap paint which is not heavily pigmented, then you would need to use a lot more to get the depth of colour you might want. Buff Titanium is a must colour for me. I don't know any other brand that has a colour resembling that. Having said all that, and even though I love DS paints, Schmincke Horadam is my go-to brand, the one I use the most.
I like that this palette doesn't have a black.
I didn’t know that about Tiffany blue! It’s a great blue. What would you say the color is in pigment? It’s like a cross between turquoise, manganese, cendre, cerulean? I think I will try to match it
Oh yes! Many brands trademark their colors. Like target red, Mattel Pink and even Post-it’s yellow are registered trademarks. Oh and for the cobalt turquoise, I believe it’s PB36
