Just found this series, super helpful and I love your energy! I'm not sure if it was touched on much, but what's best for a weird shaped window that balances both style and function? I've got a wide (8ft) short (3-ish ft) window in the bedroom, bed placed beneath it, positioned higher up on a north-face wall (the room is half-underground) and I think thermal drapes might be the way to go (super cold room all the time, brr!) but I don't know that a window that wide would look good with that style of treatment. If you don't mind me asking, what would you recommend?

There are many people out in this world who can decide for themselves what style they enjoy and works best for their home. Not everyone shares the same taste in interior design. This "designer" is clearly catering to those who strive to be trendier than their trendy neighbors. Another 5 or ten years from now she'll put out a video praising the "vintage vibe of verticle blinds".

The shutters examples used in this video are very outdated! Shutters nowadays are customized for your windows and doors and are now available in larger louver sizes without divider rails as shown in this video. She shows awful old shutters instead of the beautiful customized shutters available now. Perhaps because as a so called designer she has no experience with shutters that she has to advise her clients to settle with faux wood blinds. Even the blinds she presented have huge route holes and are ugly.

The house has very Traditional bones. Have shutters in my dining room and in master bathroom on tub deck windows. Sun in the dining room and privacy in a hard to access tub area were the drivers. Will consider wood blinds for other rooms. I love my shutters ! We changed from faux wood 2" blinds to shutters for the simple reason that our two large bedroom windows face the street. I had the shutters made with a horizontal divider bar where the divider in our double-hung windows were. Now we can have the top part of the shutter open for natural light and no one can see in. With the 2" faux woods we had to have them closed most of the time for privacy.

There's a good Lowes TH-cam about making nice heavy ones with hydraulic lifts made out of 2x4s and 1x6s. I have been selling custom window treatments for the last 9 years and I love watching this videos because she is so right! Only thing I would say is about the shutters. You are correct about them not being a perfect solution for everyone. But there are so many ways to make them more modern and transitional! You can actually get panels up to 48" wide and slats up to 4.5". That way you dont cut out any more light than a faux wood blind. Plus, you can get so many fun design inspired colors! In my opinion, don't knock shutters until you see them! Love watching these videos as so many don't think about how window treatments really effect how a whole room comes together!

Those 2" faux wood blinds you recommend are all over the house we just bought. Yeah, they may look good, but none of my kids can open up the blinds in their rooms, and even I have trouble opening them up. They are VERY heavy to manage, and we end up just keeping them down. Not to mention that the cords pose choking hazards for children! In our previous home, we bough custom honeycomb cordless blinds that you can pull up from the bottom and/or pull down from the top. So easy to use and I never had to worry about the kids. We'll be eventually replacing all the faux wood ones to the cordless honeycomb style.

The old corded blinds really are a danger, it's no exaggeration. I had a dopey cat that somehow became badly tangled in a cord & nearly died, strangled. Luckily I was home to rescue him. Afterwards I cut the cord into two separate pieces & the length in half, so it wouldn't happen again. Couldn't imagine a toddler ending up in the same situation but hear it does happen sometimes. Crazy...

Wood blinds are not beautiful to me, and I am also concerned with the strangulation hazard. I also put cordless honeycomb in every window in my last house, along with curtains. The privacy was great, along with the extra insulation. I would do it again if I needed more privacy.

The newest wrinkle in 2" faux wood blinds is that they have no cords. You push them up to the height you want and pull them down at night. A simple rod opens or closes the blinds themselves.

I was thinking of getting shutters for a bathroom window as I can’t stand all the flapping around and movement of a slatted blind when I clean it. Feel fixed shutters will be better to clean.

Also, I love the look of shutters if they're done right (on the inside of the window frame). I had them in the last house and almost put them in my new build as they just impart cottage style, coziness and bring a bit of texture to an otherwise boring window.

So good to hear and see your comments on wooden venetians, which I adore. Those photos are really lovely. I do still love the look of shutters and still can't afford them yet. But I see now that they're really meant for those rooms where you Want to reduce the light by 40%. In Australia, that's my room with North, West and East big windows. But I might just go the white woodlook slats instead.

    • @karenryder6317
      @karenryder6317 2 ปีที่แล้ว

"Venetian" blinds was a term my grandparents used in the 1940's. I believe they always had the (canvas?) tapes instead of strings--hence the MCM look. Today we just say blinds.

I do agree that the biggest con to the shutter is the loss of window surface area. But I have to say, they have always had that nice white, clean, finished look on the window. I’ve been considering zebra blinds for my home since shutters are way more than I want to spend at the moment.

I remember the 1 1/2 or 2 inch blinds from decades ago. I remember having the chore of cleaning them. I remember how often they would rise unevenly so the bottom would be askew, once that happened it was a pain to get them straight. Shutters are a much better investment.

In my neighborhood in the South, white 100% wood plantation shutters reign supreme. I decided to take the plunge and add them to my home's windows a few months after I moved into my home last summer. At the same time I was obsessed with getting as much light into the house as possible which I didn't think possible with shutters. I was so very wrong! I chose the white wood 4-1/2 inch slat size - the largest available - with tilt bar and the larger size slat looks transitional as opposed to traditional. it's all about the slat size, I think. Like you, Lisa, before I got shutters I thought I'd hate having something like this on my windows, but in fact, I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved the shutters and look to them like architectural additions to the home which they are. My house is a true 'modern farmhouse colonial' style. The shutters class up my home like nobody's business and look amazing, and one year ago I would have never considered shutters. These were custom shutters done by a local business that's been in existence for almost 70 years, and it was an investment. Also, as an additional benefit, I am getting the most incredible restful sleep at night because when I close up tight the shutters' slats in my bedroom it becomes completely pitch black (100 percent better than blackout fabric curtains/shades). Plus, it looks very 'southern' looking into the windows from the 'street view'. Obviously, the shutters being discussed in Lisa's vid are a bit different (boring and 80s ish) from the truly modern shutters of today. Plus, some shutter options are without the tilt bar which makes the shutters look very sleek. My shutters were 'factory' painted to match the window molding which happened to be Sherwin Williams "Snowbound". I'm obviously a believer in these modern shutters and have zero regrets.

Great video Lisa, great pictures and examples as usual. One big caveat…..although I personally cannot believe people are still buying vertical blinds, I still LOVE- and have- wide plantation shutters! Living in the Deep South where light = heat we have learned that shutters keep our interiors darker and cooler, just like wide porches and verandahs. It is definitely a traditional southern look that, judging by the number of custom shutter companies, isn’t going away soon. Those things that help us reduce our dependence on air con also have a positive impact on the environment….our shutters are green! Signed, Shutter Lovers of America prez 😎

Another enjoyable video! But I don't agree at all about mini blinds!😊 My apartment had all wide slates, faux oak & faux white wood 2 inch. Slowly I'm replacing them with my fav - mini blinds! Omg you only showed broken down mini blinds! (And why do people leave those up anyway?! Fix that people! What would your grandmother say?! lol) Anyway, I like mini blinds because at the right tilt they nearly disappear leaving it almost the look of no blinds at all, just nice, thin barely visible lines through beautiful curtains. Blinds overall are great though because you can control how much sunlight comes in & don't have to sacrifice all light from outside for privacy.

Lisa: Wrong! After reading other comments regarding shutters, I MUST disagree with you. Those of us who want light control, clean, simple window coverings that will last for years, classic design, etc. love our shutters. I prefer the 4 inch white plantation shutters and have enjoyed them for 20 years. I am on the coast of Georgia where heat and light control is of utmost importance. My house is a small retirement home and draperies would be over whelming. I have owned 7 homes in my lifetime and had draperies in many of these homes. They hold dust, fade, become outdated, must be cleaned professionally, etc... As far as plantation shutters: they might not be for everyone, but in my situation they are ideal and classic, not outdated '90's. Reading the other comments, I notice others agree with me. Best investment I made for my home.

We have a living room sliding door overlooking our pool deck that faces west and opens from the right only. Right now we have vertical blinds that can draw to the left. We want to see our deck and pool during the day, be able to semi-block the blaring western sun in the late afternoon, and have privacy at night. Vertical blinds seem to be the only solution as they can direct the light, be completely open, or completely closed…..but they are so ugly! What can we replace them with that will still manage to do all of those things??

    • @marilynyarbrough7951

We don’t have the blazing sun issue on the Eastern side of the lounge room where our sliding doors are but a lot of heat, both heat coming in and heat escaping in winter. We have heavy drapes that work and it’s very private so we can keep them open. Have you looked st roller blinds? There are lovely solutions, ones that you can see through slightly but giving privacy. They stop the heat. You can raise them or have them at any height. I think that’s what we will do when we replace our heavy curtains and as well as the roller blinds we can have light curtains to add softness to the room.

Susan Rabideau: I have had 4.5 inch Plantation Shutters on my two sliding doors for 20 years. Great light and heat control. They are on tracks and are easy to use and clean. Pintrest gives several examples. Mine have a beautiful frame around them and slide back and forth as needed. Plantation shutters are expensive but well worth the investment in my opinion. After all, I've enjoyed mine for over 20 years.

I remember buying cheap roller blinds for the three front windows. It’s all I could afford. They looked great until they didn’t. They started to deteriorate all together. I still am not a huge fan of traditional window treatments. I prefer paper to plastic. Love those pleated paper temporary shades. When they get a little too “antique” I just replace them maybe in a different way.

If you have children, plan to have kids, or have kid visitors please please please choose CORDLESS blinds. It's usually just a little more expensive and has the very same look and is much safer!! My neighbor had a 4 year old get caught in the blind string and passed away, it was incredibly tragic and there are some blind companies that won't even make corded options now.

I once pet sat for a client who had plantation shudders. When we visited, we always opened the window treatments in the morning closed them at the end of the day. She had literally 30 shutters downstairs alone- I counted. Each regular window had 4 separate shudders, the large one had 6. It took forever to open and close them especially since most were behind furniture. After the first time I visited there I swore I would never have those awful things!

I agree with most of the window furnishings except for the Shutters, I have them throughout my home and absolutely Love them, Easy to clean and they give enough lighting inside our home plus the privacy at night, plus I don’t have to keep on replacing them like I did when I had curtains, no curtains hanging on the floor when your vacuuming and mopping, all clean lines throughout. Cheers from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺💕💕

@@ivanrodriguez268 I get plenty of light in with my Shutters without the neighbours prying eyes looking into my home, we get a lot of foot traffic in my street and I like my privacy.

We obviously need to start a shutter revival. I didn't think I liked them until I bought a home with them. They are SO easy to adjust, just grab them with your hands and put them where you want them. Instant privacy or nearly clear view, also a snap to clean.
I was about to rip out all our brown wood blinds, which I feel are extremely dated, and am shocked that they are back in. They are so dark and always dusty--they say 80's basement to me. I really hate them and will probably replace with nice rollers or roman shades.
Also, ouch with the macramé--I think there is a place for them. I think the ones you showed are beautiful, and would look fabulous in a Boho style room.

In regard to home decor, I go with what I need, then get it in a color scheme that works for the particular room. For window treatments, I go with vertical blinds as that is what co-exists with my pets. I can set them the way I need for control of light, and if my pets feel the need to look outside, they can push a vane aside. Drapes and horizontal blinds get a lot of wear and tear in a short span of time. BTW, saw an article online that said valances are sooooo dated! You and your family are the only ones living in your house. Get what suits you!

Totally understand you Pamela!!! 👏🏼 These treatments can totally depend on certain locations and circumstances - this is just my general opinion for each treatment that I see hasn't worked the best!! 🥰 I’m always looking out for you guys and recommending these treatments as best as I can, but only you know what you need for your own home!!! 🧡🏠😁
