When I saw the title I expected the car to be awesome, but not THIS awesome. This is an amazing car, that sound, and the power, you can feel it all through this video. And looking at the steering and shifting and handling on the road, it all looks so solid. You're lucky to have driven it. And much respect to the owner, may he forever take good care of this beautifull M5!
Never driven an E39 M5, I'm surprised how close the ratios in the gear box seem to be. Many semi-old german performance cars have looong gears. Very cool car. And definitely keep it manual.
High ratio gearboxes are great for high speed cruising, after all you should be able to do 200 km/h quietly and comfortably for a few hours at a time...

That's why old inline six Diesels with a big tank are so... attractive! You can get an e34 525rds with an M5 tank and that additional 10l from Alpina in Buchloe. You'll do 1700km easyly at 130 km/h or you can go 700km at 200 km/h.
You are crazy - 280 on a double laned autobahn. I would sh## myself, cause some drivers do not look in the mirror before switching lanes. Watch yourself and be safe!

All that work and he put an e53 radio unit in it instead of a propper fitting e38/e39 radio unit, you can see it curving at the top at the left and right side by the trims, this unit is intended for the e53 x5 but still fits the e38 / e39, but makes the radio unit look out of place / unfinished.
Centrifugal superchargers are great at maintaining that “NA” feel. Root-type superchargers and turbo’s can take away that NA feel. Boost rises in direct proportion to revs as opposed to a surge in the midrange that trails off.
@@alexandredufour7358 It's a heavy car, it's not a sports car but a "super sedan". Probably 1850 kg with all the supercharger bits. The acceleration numbers are on par with its power to weight ratio.
@@alexandredufour7358 no their is a nostalgia this M is known for : the classic beauty lines and its S62 engine which won many competition even a decade after this car was built . This was back in 00 the fastest production sedan worldwide and it by today’s standard reasonably fast . All in all it commands respect,simply a legend that is the E39 M5 ✊
Dinan had a kit that was mainly just headers, that gave 500HP. I've had two E39M5's first in LHD, then in RHD. I'd still be driving one today but in an international move I had to sell it. Had about 19 years. Still looked and drove as if it was new.
@@scottrobson4097 didn't realize that! For me the 400HP was enough. Funny that BMW now makes diesels with the same acceleration and three times the gas mileage! But I still love the E39. Only dissatisfaction is that they didn't make a E39 M5 Touring, though I've seen photos of one such conversion. Maybe next time I get a car I'll have a E39 M5 Touring made with 500HP. (I had the traditional caramel interior on both of mine, one grey one carbon black)

I remember the owner saying changing the differential, not sure what ratios.

They actually had 3 stages of Dinan kits with the S3 having a supercharger among other mods on top of stage 2 that put out 621bhp.
