  • Two Finnish friends attempt to cross their home town in a straight line during a winter storm. Nothing will go wrong, right?
    Inspired by GeoWizard's epic videos, we wanted to try a straight line mission of our own and figured that the easiest and most interesting impromptu route would be through our hometown Lempäälä. Due to our schedules and Mikke flying back to Scotland, we only had one day in early January and we seized the chance. 22 kilometers in one day seemed feasible enough, but advancing through the snow and navigating straight through obstacles proved slower and more exhausting than we could've imagined. In the end, we covered about 3/5ths of the way while still clocking in 15 kilometers in ten hours. Next time we'll be better prepared with more time reserved and shall film everything in more detail.
    Watch the route review of the journey here: • Straight Line Mission ...

    Was wondering when this thing would go from geowizard to a sport in it's own right. Seems to be starting up this year.

    Great job! My father's family fled the steppes of Russia during the revolution and homesteaded in northern Ontario. He always told me how thankful he was for the help that they got from the Finns living there. The Finns were much better adapted to life in the boreal forest and taught our people a lot!

    Hi, I love GeoWizard too. I recently attempted a straight line mission across a botanic garden in Ukraine, but I picked literally the worst time of the year to do this, so I failed. I think I'll try it again sometime. Good luck on your next straight line mission!

    I like the idea of holding shorter straight line runs to stricter off-line tolerances. Like instead of a line being platinum for being 25m deviation and under, make it some proportion of total line length, like a platinum run means less than 0.1% line deviation, so a 30km line with 0.1% line deviation would permit 30m for a platinum run. But a 3km straight line would only permit 3m deviation for a platinum run.

    Damn I'm from Lempäälä too! Cool to see it represented in such a novel trend as the straight line challenge.
    Don't know if you know or remember but I was one of the guys who walked from Lempäälä to Helsinki, some 180km in total, a couple of years ago sleeping in a tent along the way, it was a minor piece in LVS back then. I'm glad this sort of outdoorsy type challenge stuff is becoming more trendy. They are hard, but healthy and rewarding!

    • @Nico97fr
      @Nico97fr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not finnish or anything, but to me, the cold weather is more bearable than the warm/tropical weather.
      when you're feeling cold, you can warm up by moving, wearing more clothes, turning on the heater, drinking hot beverages... whereas when you're feeling warm and don't have an AC or don't want to wear wet clothes or to spend your whole days in a cold bath to cool down, there's nothing else you can do.

    Doing this in the winter might not be that bad of an idea, as long as you're crossing flat terrain. There are less overgrown plants to get through, and smaller possibility of meeting angry farmers.

    • @vincentloutkovnguyen1428
      @vincentloutkovnguyen1428 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mithrandirthegrey7644 doesn't apply to farmland and house lawns etc. It's mainly about privately owned forests, where we're free to roam as long as we don't cause disturbance and leave it just as it was before we arrived.
      One thing though which might come as an advantage: norderners are very afraid of conflict. They will avoid it at all costs (only exception is after a few beers). If you trespass and the land owners notice, they'll very unlikely stop you if you explain what you're doing (unlike some scottish farmers). They'll probably just laugh at it and let you pass through.
