  • Join Graeme as he goes fishing with dried snails and shrimp. He heads to a local lake to go float fishing with these baits that he has not used before. He shows you how he rigs up for the day's fishing session and what his tactics are. He gets multi species of fish on conditions that are pretty tough! This was filmed at Watmore Farm Fishery.

Don't do it as much right now because of my health. But watch out I'm getting better and the lake/reservoir behind my home will be emptied after I'm done. Lol lol lol lol. Kidding I always put back. Thanks again for sharing. Can't wait for another. Til then be safe. Sincerely Michelle Pup Harley and Kitty Liam Arlington Massachusetts from across the Pond.

    Cracking Perch, 👍😉
    My best is 3 lb 1 oz.
    Took a bunch of red maggots on a size 12 hook, 2' from the bank in about 30" of water.
    In the lake I was fishing they run to over 5 lb and most get caught on prawn.
    Those freshwater shrimp are mostly used as loose feed for aquarium or pond fish, ideal natural groundbait additive but likely quite expensive.

    At 16.33 Graeme, was that not a Rudd? Been a while since I fished freshwater mind, so my fish id skills are a bit rusty. Back in the day I tried wasp grubs, mealworms and even ant eggs from the garden. Nothing seemed to beat maggots though.

    Thanks Graeme. I use dendrobenas and maggots here on the Bure haven't had any luck with anythjng else, so, if it works why fix it aye. One thing I've been very lucky with is using a tiny triangle of bright pink silicone cut from a silicone baking tray from pound shop to hold the worms on . I crush the barbs down which leaves a helpful little bump.

    I use barbed hooks and the squash the barb down. They either snap off completely, normally bigger hooks, leaving a "bump" that I have never lost maggots or worms from wiggling off or just close down onto the hook body, again leaving a bump. Hard to find barbless hooks where I am so works a treat.

    Well you get mites in bags of flour and rice. I have recently tried dried meal worms for birds rehydrated. Dried they float and break up and will not hook. Rehydrated I have had a bite but nothing more. I am looking for a universal killer bait because it is hard to get maggots where I am. Any ideas? Another great video Graeme. Thanks. Still hoping you will come to my favourite Thames niche to tutor an old geezer novice.

      Red maggots best in winter,but I was picking up some Ragworm in Havant yesterday and we were talking alternative baits. He showed me some live mealworms which looked like large maggots,apparently people feed them to their reptiles. Might be worth a try,and use dried mealworms(soaked) for loose feed ?

    • @ftlpope

    • @poodle559
      @poodle559 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Barbed hooks should be banned outright. If after all these years that barbless hooks have been out you can't bring bring yourself to use them you need to pack it in. At the very least think fish welfare and the damage to the mouth of the fish when you rag that barb out backwards.

    • @markmason13
      @markmason13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poodle559 You do not know what you talking about. Barbless hooks move in the mouth of the fish and make a bigger hole than a barbed hook. The only prob with barbed hooks is when you get ppl who do not know how to take them out.
      If you think that barbless hooks are best for the fish you need to stop fishing and take up golf.

    • @poodle559
      @poodle559 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markmason13 To actually think a barbed hook doesn't move around while playing a fish is ludicrous to say the least. Not only will the hook move in the same manner as a barbless the barb will gouge away at the hook hold as it twists about while the fish is writhing about being played. A barb would have to huge as in massively huge to prevent any side to side movement and twist. Also, it's ludicrous to suggest that a barbed hook can be pulled out clean. Unless you turn the hook and pull it out backwards, which means sticking the hook further into the mouth the hook will not come out clean no matter how good you think you are. A barbed hook is designed not to come out. Have you ever hooked yourself properly with a barbed hook? Try it one day, that should be a good experiment for you.
      Lets not forget that fish that get tethered or are trailing a rig will free themselves much quicker with a barbless.
      I do think barbless hooks are the way forward and do less damage. Also after 43 years fishing i won't be giving it up for golf.
