I don’t think she wears miniskirts and tight things to be sultry and inappropriate so much as a major point of Fran’s character: her confidence. That is unique, I can’t think of another female sitcom character that feels so good in her body (age thing aside).
Fran *knows* she has a great figure, good legs, a slim waist, etc., and isn’t coy about it.

The skirts were really just in at the time, tho. The 90's were doing a 50's-60's thing. It was either Bardot or Twiggy or some such inspiration. That's why Fran looks timeless.

No, she definitely does wear them to be sultry and inappropriate; she says so herself almost every other episode. She even gets happy when people say she looks like a hooker😂 But the confidence definitely overshadows all of that. She is definitely a character that I look up to because of it!

@@Sam-ux4kw Jewish women were viewed as not sexy and not interested in sex, not beautiful, undesirable. A popular Jewish female trope was the nagging over-protective mother. Jewish male characters who “made it” ended up with blonde gentile women. Fran Drescher reversed the equation. The Nanny was so iconic for me growing up. Jewish representation was so little, and very stereotyped, and I saw no one who was like me or my family. While not perfect I was still able to relate to a lot of it, especially the Jewish references. I saw my maternal grandma and my Bubbe (we called my great-grandma that) in Fran’s mom and grandma. I saw my aunts in Fran herself. The show is amazing and iconic.

    • @SaraxAdam
      @SaraxAdam ปีที่แล้ว +6

still is stereotyped to this day! we get represented sometimes, but whenever the character is decidedly Jewish, the writers really amp it up, as opposed to showcasing it in this seamless, beautiful, authentic way like the Nanny did :)
edit: though not perfect, as you said. perfectly imperfect, though.

I think Fran Fine's style has grown super popular the last few years because Americans are sick of dressing like in dull basics for the last twenty years. We're yearning for more feminine, sexy, and flamboyant fashions. Especially when we look back into our parents pictures in their young age during the 90s or 80s and its heartbreaking that style has regressed. Thank you for your work as usual. The 80s-90s were pretty much the last gasp of quality in manufacturing. Today all that matters is pumping out cheap and quick styles that fit a range of sizes more or less decently (hence why sleeveless dresses have been so popular even though women beg for sleeves--it's just easier.) Maybe there's still some difference in couture but I don't know, that's not my income level 🙂

I would say that while The Nanny's visual style and humor are informed by camp sensibilities, it would be more accurate to say that it exists in a "heightened reality", like many sitcoms do! Heightened realism is kind of a nebulous concept, but basically it doesn't matter that Fran is wearing expensive clothing so long as the clothes FEEL, to the average viewer, as though a woman with a magpie's sense of fashion might have plucked them out of a bin. The fact that Fran's clothes are actually incredibly well-coordinated does matter, but what's equally important is that the visual language of her style communicates "tacky lovable life of the party" while also being very chic. Here, it definitely helps that she's being contrasted against stifling WASP upper class aesthetics, which often conflates color, pattern, and adventurous cuts of clothing with something being "tawdry", "tacky", or worse (to their minds) - ethnic.

A season 3 episode called “Fashion Show” has Todd Oldham guest starring as Fran’s Cousin Toddy (but still a version of himself). Cousin Toddy designs the costumes for a production of “Our Town” that Mr. Sheffield is producing and the joke at the end is that Toddy provides Fran with tons of clothes because she wouldn’t be able to dress like she does on a nanny’s salary. So I think that was their way of explaining how Fran dresses on the edge of fashion without having to spend a fortune. And yes, I am a Nanny fanatic. 😂

I'm literally rewatching The Nanny right now as we speak, and I must say - I actually like how they repeated outfits here and there... despite it being obviously unrealistic for a nanny to wear designer pieces on the daily, by borrowing looks here and there, it actually makes the characters more realistic as who really wears a designer ensemble once and never wears it again...
Also my favourite look is I think from Season One (just checked, yes Season 1, Episode 12) where Fran Produces/Directs Gracie's school play and on the night of the performance she is wearing the 'base outfit' but she layers it with a chunky jewelled chain mail jumper.... Lowkey I want to get one for myself and wear it - but reinterpret it for a guy...

But please remember that on one episode (when she's in charge of the costume department of one of Mr. Sheffield's shows) she says that most of her wardrobe comes from one of his cousins who works with designers and celebrities, and she says something like: "Do u really think I could afford these looks with my nanny salary?" And I feel like that was the smartest decision to justify Fran's wardrobe, 'cause ofc she's a shopaholic and she loves buying at Loman's but she also has another source of clothing that's super extra

That image of the striped coat before/after is almost mind blowing to me. It's a prime example of how off the rack clothes are flattering for absolutely no one and a well tailored garment is worth its weight in gold. Loved this video and I always loved Fran's style too. What the designer said about incorporating humor into Fran's wardrobe was also lovely. Her wardrobe told us a lot about her, including that she didn't take herself too seriously which was foiled by characters like CC Babcock who was gorgeous and often dressed either in more traditional conservative styles or otherwise in clothes that signaled that she did take herself very seriously.

Yeah, Fran probably wouldn't be able to buy ALL the clothes she wears. However, she lives in a house she doesn't have to pay for. And gets free food and can use their car to drive around. Basically, she would only have to buy herself clothes and just stuff she wants to have for herself. So she could have paid for some of the things she wore.

I have always loved the Nanny. I aspired to be as unapologetic as Fran Fine. At the end of it all, she was herself. She was loud and outspoken and I was a loud girl with ADHD. Seeing characters who acted like me was uncommon, so having Fran Fine be there, her bold and brash self, made me feel like I wasn't just going to be a weirdo.

Oh, Mina, this was such a GOOD video analisys! Grew up with reruns of The Nanny on tv (i'm from Brazil) and that style was really appealing by the exageration of details and prints. I used to think that was really funny and "tacky", but not really "fashion" until you framed the layered combinations and harmony of the looks. That wardrobe is dreamy, really cool.

I loved The Nanny growing up. It was one of those rare family friendly shows that was appropriate for kids, but had double entendres that adults would pick up. It had something for everyone.
And the fashion was just... it was so good. I love the hints of vintage and historical inspirations. But I’ve got to be honest, what really makes those outfits is Fran herself. No one else would look as good in those outfits as she could.
    It’s not fair, really.
