One thing I like about this movie and this scene in particular is it doesnt go down the usual hollywood path. Tom Cruise's character doesnt partake in the attack against it. He points out that it has no shield, which seems bizarre that he would only notice it but it makes sense as the soldiers were more worried about getting civilians out of there. Then the military takes over and does all the work while Tom Cruise's character gets to safety. It's got a realistic vibe to it. But that might just be me
The whole movie is so realistic and that's what makes it so great. No stupid and pointless heroic fighting scenes. Its just bare bones survival by one family. And the aliens look wicked cool too.
The only thing I didn't really like about this movie was the massive plot armor his son was wearing when he decides to run over that hill to watch the military fight against the aliens. You see soldiers fighting frantically, vehicles on fire while escaping the alien's attacks. Obviously soldiers are having a tough time against them. Then he just shows up at the end as if nothing happened. It'd be different if they got separated more naturally, like say a tripod blast hit near them and his whereabouts were unknown due to the massive confusion and fighting.

Can you imagine the relief these soldiers felt? Like, after fighting so many losing battles and seeing their weapons being completely useless against the tripods' shields, they probably went into this thinking that they wouldn't do anything. But then the javelin hits, and that would have just been the best feeling.
the book had a great moment like this. in the book, the army's main weapon against the tripods was artillery batteries, but they were useless in every case until one time where one battery got the tripod distracted then they hit it in the back with a hidden battery behind it, destroying it. it's the first moment in the book where they aren't invincible, the moment where it becomes apparent that they can be killed. it's incredibly effective at feeling triumphant, especially for a book from the 1800's.
I reckon that: not only do the Aliens pilot the tripods, but they have an almost mentally synchronised control over them. A bit like in Pacific Rim, the jaegers and their pilots were in synch. That's why the shields went down, because the alien was sick and therefore the overall bodily functions weren't fully capable for both pilot and tripod. In a more simple explanation: Alien = no immune system Tripod = no shield
I always figured that the biological components of the tripod would be equally susceptible to infection, they’re mechanical but with living pieces inside, which we see in the basket scene. It started with the tripod and passed to the invaders, or vice versa, which would cancel out functions of their craft like the ability to project energy offensively and defensively. Notice here it tried using its side mounted heat rays and they just wouldn’t fire. 1:48
One of my favorite things about this movie is how they actually hired real troops to depict the military in this movie. They asked them what they would do in the scenarios played out in the film and that played a big part in how some of these scenes played out. It’s hard to act like a soldier if you’ve never been one yourself, and these guys don’t really need a lot of acting experience because they’re already accustomed to running training exercises and simulations where they need to act like it’s the real deal. All you gotta do is tell them to do their jobs while the cameras are rolling. I wish more films would do this, given they have the budget for it. Makes it feel so much more authentic, you can tell these guys are real troops. The movement, the way they handle their weapons, the body language, the communication, etc. They did an amazing job considering the confines of the script
Definitely know what you're talking about there. I saw the same actions in Rogue One movie, and my ex argued, the rebels were actors and I kept telling her, they're real veterans or real military. Shortly afterwards, there were multiple articles revealing they hired Veterans to play the rebels in Rogue One.

I love that the squad leader goes from calmly trying to get the civilians to safety to "Fuck it, we're killing this son of a bitch" in the space of about five seconds.
It probably helps that he found out that they probably COULD actually kill it now. After all, realizing they were outgunned and unable to do a damn thing against the shields probably shifted their priorities to civilian protection, but upon hearing that the shields were down, and that they probably weren't going to get a better chance, he took it.

Hell no. There were hundreds of these things, and probably tens of thousands worldwide. The tripod wasn't even fighting back either. If that tripod was able to fight back, it would've vaporised all those soldiers before they could down it.

I often like thinking about what happens AFTER the movie ends. And the truth is... its not happy for this movie. Most countries still around would begin a race to retrieve, reverse engineer and apply the technology of the martians. And the instability the world would be in would give rise to conquerors and invaders of the Human variety, taking advantage of the weakened state of others. Which ever nation is successful in fully integrating the martian technology first would dominate the planet.
I get what you are saying, but after all the destruction and terror we had seen from these machines do you really think even the most evil person on earth (no pun intended) would have the balls to go inside even a fallen Tripod? And if somebody actually does there's still the thought that something could go wrong when trying to operate it. Even reverse engineering would be extremely risky.

I think you folks are all overreacting a tad bit. The screams barely last a few seconds at most. Given the overall panic and combat-intensive situation in this scene, it's natural for children to let out their fear, especially if you *can* imagine seeing such tremendous and creepy alien machinery stomping around.

By far, Rachael's behaviour throughout this entire film was one of the things that made it, she is behaving like AN ACTUAL CHILD WOULD during an apocalyptic event. This is going to sound dumb to some people, but when I saw this movie when I was 7, she was the only character I related to, and it made the experience watching it all the more scary because I (and most kids that saw it in 2005) would have behaved the exact same way, even adults would be screaming and crying. These people want her to be that unrealistic character that suddenly becomes this mastermind kid genius tough girl recycled cliché shit that is boring as hell, and frankly, makes no sense. People always want the recycled content because they aren't creative enough to think outside of the box on their own. so they fawn over whatever movie is thrown in their face and reject anything that is different. This movie is by far then only alien invasion film that conveys emotional realism. The characters are just regular people like you and I trying to survive during mayhem. Its simplicity makes the film all the more scary, because anyone can relate to the story.

Would a kid do this, or is it what you think a kid would do. Like adults, kids will react in a wide variety of ways as well. I always assumed the tripods were biomechanical and were also susceptible to Earth diseases. Its not just the pilots who are dying, the organic components of the machines are also breaking down, and the smell of rotting flesh is attracting the birds. At least that's my theory. Actually one of my favourite adaptations of the original source material but also one of the ones that strays furthest from the source material. I don’t really get why some people hate this, it’s not an awful movie and some of the CG looks better than the CG in some movies in 2019
One important thing to note for everyone saying 'okay so without the shields we'd easily beat them' is that you don't realise that this was not a war to them. This was extermination. Because of their shields, they were able to casually take their time in killing, shooting at individual humans rather than just destroying a wide area all at once, picking up humans to get a better look at them. They were *playing* with us. If their shields didn't exist but they also were not sick, that laser weaponry would still be absolutely terrifyingly powerful when used to full potential. Remember what happened with the scene where Robbie runs away to go fight? A single tripod causes a massive explosion that destroys an entire military attacking force, choppers, vehicles and all. Without shields it would still be a bitter fight. It's like how a particularly mean human might deal with a harmless bug (a beetle or an ant) as opposed to one that might actually hurt him (a wasp, or a spider). Since you know that this small creature might actually hurt you, you use far greater force in response
It was freaking napalm dropped by the military dat caused the explosions and fire. The army got wrecked by regular evaporating lasers it is simple really. Without their shields you can destroy these tripods very easily with armor piercing weaponry a single chopper could kill a handful just because they can't even shoot their lasers you saw how hard it was to aim let alone shoot.

in the book, the humans kill their first tripod by hitting it in the back with artillery. after that moment, the tripods stop using lasers and switch entirely to these mortars that launch black smoke that kills everything it touches. they don't even take a chance once they realize the humans can kill them.

Y'know in most disaster and ESPECIALLY monster movies, it seems like the action is following the protagonist, but WotW does a really good job establishing how truly widespread this invasion is
It’s kinda a good excuse to make the action follow the protagonist, having the disaster be basically everywhere with those alien machines wandering around randomly due to how they are simply trying to find and consume as many humans as possible, the context really helps for such a cliché to not be a cliche
When I was watching this, I thought the tripods were actually invincible along with the aliens, but when this scene happened, it was satisfying as hell to watch the tripods being shot down. Just as satisfying as the scene where Tom Cruise was in the cage with the soldier and the grenades exploded inside the machine.

I reckon that: not only do the Aliens pilot the tripods, but they have an almost mentally synchronised control over them. A bit like in Pacific Rim, the jaegers and their pilots were in synch. That's why the shields went down, because the alien was sick and therefore the overall bodily functions weren't fully capable for both pilot and tripod.
In a more simple explanation:

I always figured that the biological components of the tripod would be equally susceptible to infection, they’re mechanical but with living pieces inside, which we see in the basket scene. It started with the tripod and passed to the invaders, or vice versa, which would cancel out functions of their craft like the ability to project energy offensively and defensively. One of my favorite things about this movie is how they actually hired real troops to depict the military in this movie. They asked them what they would do in the scenarios played out in the film and that played a big part in how some of these scenes played out.
It’s hard to act like a soldier if you’ve never been one yourself, and these guys don’t really need a lot of acting experience because they’re already accustomed to running training exercises and simulations where they need to act like it’s the real deal. All you gotta do is tell them to do their jobs while the cameras are rolling. I wish more films would do this, given they have the budget for it. Makes it feel so much more authentic, you can tell these guys are real troops. The movement, the way they handle their weapons, the body language, the communication, etc. They did an amazing job considering the confines of the script
Best example of this is the movie Waterloo where they got whole regiments to portray the armies

I often like thinking about what happens AFTER the movie ends. And the truth is... its not happy for this movie. Most countries still around would begin a race to retrieve, reverse engineer and apply the technology of the martians. And the instability the world would be in would give rise to conquerors and invaders of the Human variety, taking advantage of the weakened state of others.
Which ever nation is successful in fully integrating the martian technology first would dominate the planet.

By far, Rachael's behaviour throughout this entire film was one of the things that made it, she is behaving like AN ACTUAL CHILD WOULD during an apocalyptic event. This is going to sound dumb to some people, but when I saw this movie when I was 7, she was the only character I related to, and it made the experience watching it all the more scary because I (and most kids that saw it in 2005) would have behaved the exact same way, even adults would be screaming and crying. These people want her to be that unrealistic character that suddenly becomes this mastermind kid genius tough girl recycled cliché shit that is boring as hell, and frankly, makes no sense. People always want the recycled content because they aren't creative enough to think outside of the box on their own. so they fawn over whatever movie is thrown in their face and reject anything that is different.
This movie is by far then only alien invasion film that conveys emotional realism. The characters are just regular people like you and I trying to survive during mayhem. Its simplicity makes the film all the more scary, because anyone can relate to the story.

Would a kid do this, or is it what you think a kid would do. Like adults, kids will react in a wide variety of ways as well. My guess why the tripods lost their shields is they were crewed by numerous aliens and when they started to die there weren’t enough to effectively crew the tripods and keep the shields running
Or the tripods were biomechanical, and the disease that kills the alien pilots also infected some component of the walker as well
They were probably in snync with each pilots minds and when each alien became ill, functions of the tripods couldn’t be used effectively

Actually one of my favourite adaptations of the original source material but also one of the ones that strays furthest from the source material.
I don’t really get why some people hate this, it’s not an awful movie and some of the CG looks better than the CG in some movies in 2019

One important thing to note for everyone saying 'okay so without the shields we'd easily beat them' is that you don't realise that this was not a war to them. This was extermination. Because of their shields, they were able to casually take their time in killing, shooting at individual humans rather than just destroying a wide area all at once, picking up humans to get a better look at them. They were *playing* with us. If their shields didn't exist but they also were not sick, that laser weaponry would still be absolutely terrifyingly powerful when used to full potential. Remember what happened with the scene where Robbie runs away to go fight? A single tripod causes a massive explosion that destroys an entire military attacking force, choppers, vehicles and all. Without shields it would still be a bitter fight. It's like how a particularly mean human might deal with a harmless bug (a beetle or an ant) as opposed to one that might actually hurt him (a wasp, or a spider). Since you know that this small creature might actually hurt you, you use far greater force in response
It was freaking napalm dropped by the military dat caused the explosions and fire. The army got wrecked by regular evaporating lasers it is simple really. Without their shields you can destroy these tripods very easily with armor piercing weaponry a single chopper could kill a handful just because they can't even shoot their lasers you saw how hard it was to aim let alone shoot.
@luke wilson Why would dat be the thing? We hear planes flying over all the time and long before the flames come up the vehicles were already destroyed. I would assume the military is throwing everything they got at them cause' they lost their bases can't run anymore (a proper military would just run and leave the civilians to fend for themselves). I would like some proof of your statement please from the books or anything you can provide.

in the book, the humans kill their first tripod by hitting it in the back with artillery. after that moment, the tripods stop using lasers and switch entirely to these mortars that launch black smoke that kills everything it touches.
they don't even take a chance once they realize the humans can kill them.

In my opinion, air and naval power would probably be rendered moot anyway. Air and Sea battle are all about supremacy in their theaters (an oversimplification again but, yeah)-- if we're going on the assumption of overwhelmingly superior technology, I doubt that either type of force on Earth could even hinder them while being fully operational.

Y'know in most disaster and ESPECIALLY monster movies, it seems like the action is following the protagonist, but WotW does a really good job establishing how truly widespread this invasion is
It’s kinda a good excuse to make the action follow the protagonist, having the disaster be basically everywhere with those alien machines wandering around randomly due to how they are simply trying to find and consume as many humans as possible, the context really helps for such a cliché to not be a cliche

When I was watching this, I thought the tripods were actually invincible along with the aliens, but when this scene happened, it was satisfying as hell to watch the tripods being shot down. Just as satisfying as the scene where Tom Cruise was in the cage with the soldier and the grenades exploded inside the machine.

why crows? cuz the aliens consume blood and it attract crows. the tripod might somehow has the blood or human aroma/ sense. so interesting. and what disease that kills them, I think it is flu, or another viral infection carried by human blood/ brain or even the air that they breathe since their arrival on ground since we saw that they dont wear any astronautical clothes or helmet(body protections)
this is my favorite movies until now. it shows that we as human must not feel too superior becuz there are more advanced creature/ civilizations in the universe. we must keep improving and be humble.
this movie, to me is simple yet interesting with high tension of how to escape or being caught.and here it is not mention clearly where they come from or what their purpose for coming to earth (instead of eliminating all human left)
from here we can also see that besides they have the advance technology hut they are also a savage creature. they might suck out all the resources from earth but of course earth wont support their need anymore and then they will search for another planet. so, a civilization must be civilized 😄 should think, act and be responsible 🤩🙏 great movie anyway,this is a great collection!
