Dude, I'd bet that just the A10s using modern guided munitions could do the entire job by themselves. They sent so much ordinance because of expected losses and the inaccuracy of what they could drop.
If the Allies managed to get a Warthog in WW2, the German Reich would probably nickname it *"Donner spucken"* or *Spitting Thunder* due to the sound the Gattling Gun makes as it mows down entire Wings of Bombers or even Fighters in seconds 😂 Arguably I think something like the Warthog is better then some of the more modern and faster aircraft because although slower, it allows for more accuracy. But the enemy plains are also still slower so its that happy medium. Plus it can tank any damage received by their guns.
Yeah I think the armor is the most important part. It can safety sit within range of those bomber gunners to line up gun runs. An F22 will get fucked if sprayed with pretty much any machine gun fire at those ranges.
If the Allies actually managed to get A-10s in WW2, I am pretty sure there would have not been enough Germans left to contemplate a name for the new aircraft they had just witnessed. But I agree: Donnerspucken sounds great!
Generally, if we're talking about a "modern" plane being able to fight WW2 aircraft on their terms... the A-10 would be the best. For the slower speed would enable the A-10 to avoid issues where it's closing at many times the top speed of even a WW2 fighter, and yet its modern control surfaces would give it a level of control and maneuverability that a plane of the A-10's physical size in WW2 might not have had, thus keeping it competitive with dedicated fighters of the time... while its armor would then also give it some degree of protection.
Eeeh, it would be interesting to see a Hog vs WW2 dogfight in DCS, perhaps, but I think the A-10 would have trouble with most piston fighters in a maneuvering fight. It's simply much larger and heavier, and even at its optimum speeds isn't going to turn anything close to as tightly as a plane that weighs about 1/4-1/3 as much. Even an absolute chunker like the P-47 still only weighs half of what an A-10 does. The WW2 guys just have vastly lower wing loading. The A-10 probably wouldn't hold up under a good burst from MGs or especially cannons, either. For all the hype about its ruggedness, it was really only designed to shrug off a few hits from light AA and keep flying well enough to get back to base, where it would then be easy to fix up. The Hog has a big climb rate advantage over just about anything piston powered, though, and it's faster than most, so vertical/BnZ would seem to be the way to go.

As one of the people suggesting this A10 battle I gotta say not only was this more effective than the F22 sortie but also probably a solid $50M cheaper
How about a squadron of A-10s doing a bomber mission from WW2? Not only could the A-10 take out an entire bomber formation single-handed, but it could also carry nearly as many bombs as a B-17 too with only one crew member at risk per mission. Put a few sidewinders on each plane for self-defense and they might not even need escort

It's really interesting to see how aircraft dimensions have changed over the decades. The A-10, a single seat CAS gunboat, is all but as big as these crewed strategic bombers.
I feel like any current or even slightly outdated subsonic combat aircraft would do very well in this scenario. Current or even slightly outdated fighters tho, like 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen stuff designed for supersonic flight envelopes would prolly perform similarly to the F22
Here's a neat idea that came into my head watching this. The Final Countdown-like scenario. F-14 Tomcat but a singular one versus an entire German Bomber Formation trying to Strike a Carrier Group
The A-10 is perfect because it out performs but does necessarily outclass WWII aircraft. I’m sure there could theoretically be a carrier version made as well.
I think the reason the A-10 performs so well "back in the day" is because back then it was more about getting down and dirty (into the fight) With modern weapons there's a focus on long-range BVR type combat The A-10 is a master if the same type of combat that used to rule the battlefield
I'm imagining the guys at the airfield, tucked behind cover with their eyes wide as saucers, nudging each other all 'you go out and ask!' 'no, YOU go out and ask!' trying to work up the nerve to find out just what the *hell* shot up the incoming bombers and then landed neat as you please at *their* airfield.
Reading all the comments below, there are so many WWII ideas. Taking on fighters, bombers, tanks, carrier groups with anything from A-10's, F-15's, F-18's, B2's, F-117's, F-16's, and Harriers. The fun never ends!!! Hell, I say do it all man!!!
I'm sure that like 1 single plane like the A-10 could won the wwii for the nation it had it. The only counter this could have is AA at the low passes cause even fighters wouldn't be catching this, but only by negating those bomb runs and decimating tank columns thats entirely a win there
As you've now done a number of anachronistic air battle videos (WW2 fighter vs modern fighter, A-10 vs WW2 ground targets etc), if you are looking for a challenge, how about a P-47 loaded with rockets and 500-lbs bombs in the same scenario where your A-10c merged with MiG-23s while pounding tanks and SAM/AA vehicles.

That was a lot of fun to watch! The A-10 was perfect for that mission!
I feel like any current or even slightly outdated subsonic combat aircraft would do very well in this scenario. Current or even slightly outdated fighters tho, like 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen stuff designed for supersonic flight envelopes would prolly perform similarly to the F22
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought about the A10 during the Raptor video.
Seems like it’s super well suited to this role in this scenario between its low speed and GAU-8 rof+he shell damage capability.
How about the A-10 against the ME-262
I've been fantasizing about this type of engagement for about 20 years
3:43 A-10 collateral
My beloved
Incredible Vibe
SU-25 on these same WW2 scenarios. Same type of plane so it might be just as good.
Here's a neat idea that came into my head watching this. The Final Countdown-like scenario. F-14 Tomcat but a singular one versus an entire German Bomber Formation trying to Strike a Carrier Group
holy shit, thanks for doing this man!!!!
The A-10 is perfect because it out performs but does necessarily outclass WWII aircraft. I’m sure there could theoretically be a carrier version made as well.
GS just being naughty again...
Very entertaining! Thank you for the video!
I think the reason the A-10 performs so well "back in the day" is because back then it was more about getting down and dirty (into the fight)
With modern weapons there's a focus on long-range BVR type combat
The A-10 is a master if the same type of combat that used to rule the battlefield
Im loving the portal episodes. Please keep doing them lol.
SAME SCENARIO....BUT A-10 VS ME 262 PROTECTING ITS BOMBERS!
The Luftwaffe was definitely calling Goering "Meier" after that day...
I'm sure that like 1 single plane like the A-10 could won the wwii for the nation it had it. The only counter this could have is AA at the low passes cause even fighters wouldn't be catching this, but only by negating those bomb runs and decimating tank columns thats entirely a win there
The fellas down in the motor pool are about to shit bricks
Flying over my house again, cheers for the save my dude. The only problem with living here, all the goddamn Heinkels.
A-10 is an absolutely AWESOME aircraft ❤. I hope the USAF never get rid of it or make a more modern up to date one.
The A-10 would've been my FIRST guess to a good aircraft to send back in time to WW2.
The A-10 is battlefield laxative. It just makes everything another. And slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
Challenge: 1 A-10 vs 100 WWII German bombers!
A-10 on a multirole mission on WW2, doing AtA, AtG, Bombing, all the jazz.
