Good video showing how rear tire leans & rolls well on rear. I've been riding darkside on my 02 Honda VTX 1800R for near ten years. Had no problems and great tire wear. I can corner well as stock with only limiting factor the floor boards dragging with either tire, never close to losing grip. Increased mileage wear, increased weight carrying capacity and far less expensive.

@@mlucasGrindstone Hi Matthew, back when I converted over, used Michelin Hydro edge which was used by some darksiders. It has worn very well with lots of miles, has good traction and smooth, but requires more effort to lean bike as this tires very flat tread. Would seek a rounder tread option when mine is worn out, Bridgestone has some options.

Hi Chris. I love your videos; congratulations on 700+ videos. I wanted to give you my experience with an insurance claim on my 2008 Triump Rocket 3. I darksided for many years on that bike (245/50R16). I hit a pipe in the road, it broke a hole into my engine casing and the debris from that immediately locked up my transmission and rear tire (about a 300' skid mark was the result). I never dropped the bike but the insurance totaled my bike due to the cost to replace the engine and transmission. A 20+ year motorcycle claim adjuster from Geico had no issue at all with my car tire. He noticed everything and even gave me credit for custom pegs. They paid me in full, more than I could have got I'd I would have just sold the bike. Again, they had no issues at all with a huge car tire on the rear. Geico paid without any questions at all.

Thanks Chris for all the information. I got 15,000 miles out of my E4 rear and over 24,000 on my E4 front. I replaced them as a pair. I am now double darkside with Driveguard and Battlax. I love the way they ride, feel, corner, etc. All of it. Like you "I ain't never goin back".
This is very interesting! I bought a Honda Sabre new in 2002 and it came with Dunlops. They scared the hell outta me!
They would slip and slide and everyone wondered why I rode so slow! I got Metzeler tires and it was night and day difference! I love your courage to try this and glad you are having much success. God Bless and keep the shiny side up!

That’s correct. Insurance companies only require a D.O.T approved tire.

I have seen quite a few of your videos and I really appreciate you taking the time to film, produce, edit and finally display them. Very educational and enjoyable. As far as this one is concerned, your advice concerning the *insurance* aspect is SPOT ON! There are so many worry-wart riders out there that worry about every little nitch in life. What if, what if, what if, what if and on and on and on.
About your views on whether or not you could tell you have a car tire on, well, everyone (every rider) is different for sure. When I tried a C/T for the first time, I think it took me about a half a city block to get used to it. From that point on, I've owned three and have put around 50,000-60,000 total on all of them combined. I've never been locked into this *Run-flat* dilemma either. All of mine have been non-run-flats. I ain't dead yet! I did the double dark side one time back a while ago on my old '08 Wing and just like single dark side, I couldn't tell one bit difference in riding. The bike did exactly what I wanted it to, when I wanted it to do it, period!
I absolutely love purchasing a C/T for 1/3 the price of a M/C tire and getting 3 times the miles out of it. All the while enjoying a great and SAFE RIDE! Again, I appreciate your reports here. Keep'm coming!

The last year I rode, I put four new back tires on the bike due to screws and bolts picked up on the road. In one instance, I just put a brand new set of tires on and the rear tire picked up a bolt on the way home from the dealership. I can understand why you dark sided. Congrats on the 700 videos, Chris. Here's something for you to try...next level...Darkest Side: try a commercial tire, those used in commercial vans, they usually last allot more than a car tire, even with several tons of load!😉

I just put a Nexen SB802 on my Midnight Venture last week. I have lots of friends on the dark side but always been skeptical. So far I think I may like it

if you run primarily on straight stretches of road I could understand going to the darkside. On the rear I can understand going darkside. When the time comes I may go darkside. I do appreciate the study you did.
If I had the choice to pay for one Rear car tire, or 4 new rear motorcycle tires bundled together for the exact same price, I would choose the one car tire over 4 motorcycle tires hands down. To be perfectly honest, I feel more safer running the car tire, because I have more grip, more traction, stops better, and it's smoother ride, did I mention it grips the road better. Car tires gives you road hazard insurance, my Bridegstone Driveguard came with it, motorcycle tires generally dont offer you any road hazard.

Good morning Chris this is RoboCop from Bolingbrook Illinois just working out here since yesterday waiting for my guy that were doing ATM he's preparing them and I'm secure him make sure he don't get I wasn't calling robber anyting for the location where at I'm going to go over Chicago this morning I started at 2200 hours I'm still here once he's done I'll be going home back to the to the countryside type and I'm telling you I am ready for my flat tire the back side and I ain't going back for no tire motorcycle tire definitely I hear your statement and I'm going to stick to it and that's all it is brother I got to try it out it takes time to learn something new and I'm going to do it because I ain't buying another check $270 tire like I said I'm going to go by that tire mount it up there I got a friend of mine that you going to model for me we're just waiting for that summer to pop up and I bought it you have a nice morning brother and I'll see you in the future out there we're planning to go out there sometimes one of the chief of state police and a couple of the guys out there myself we're planning to go out there hopefully that will do the work and then after that I'm going to put the decals on my bike it's going to say Yamaha dark side my brother take care and you be safe out there riding watch out for those knuckleheads out there cuz you never know these knuckleheads they don't pay attention the bike I'm getting my bike ready with my sounds when my LED lights it all going to be wanted by me I ain't taking this shop so they can charge you like 200 300 dollars to put lights like a like I can't do it I did my boys bike burgundy Harley-Davidson he's got for 6 by 9 to 6 by 9 Chinese bag and he got two sixes and a half and a front he's got 2 5 and 1/4 in the rear of the seat and plus you got to five and two quarters in front but he's got a set of tweeters he's got a thousand watt amplifier that baby is rocking you will here for about three blocks away coming maybe more Chris the dark side you take care my brother

Hi chris I've been there buddy. I put a third tire on in one year. Basically in 6 months. You've got me thinking.
I RIDE a 2002 GL1800 ABS and love it. This is only my third Aspencade and a Goldwing RIDER for life.
I've only recently gone over to the Dark-Side and the BIGGEST difference I've found is that the Bike seems more stable at straight line driving. I never took my hands off the bars because a Bike Tire let the machine wander a little not much but I could see it move around on me.
As soon as I got used to the subtle different feeling of the DARK-SIDE Tire I let of the Bars JUST as one of those tests you do just to see..,,and let me tell you my Bike stayed Straight and stable as having my hands on the bars. It didn't want to veer to one side or the other and stayed in the center of my lane. THAT convinced me to stay on the DARK-SIDE for good now.
The ADDED mileage really wasn't a concern for me and is just a very nice side benefit and the cost difference is substantial too.
I guess the next step for me it to do the DOUBLE-DARK-SIDE on the front.
I may look into the SHINKO 777 for the FRONT on mine tho. I like the grip on the SHINKO so that's the direction I'm going to try.

Chris, I see you polished out your cast aluminum wheels. Nice. I just finished hand polishing mine out to a mirror finish. Took a lot of time and trial and error. 2012 GL1800.

I had a 1983 GL1200 that I had a new custom 16 inch rim made by "Wheels by Boyd" they added 1 inch to it so I could run a 195/70 16 car tire. I split my stock Comstar rim and bolted the hub and spokes to the new rim. Ran true. It was offset so the tire did not hit the driveshaft and I had to cut and weld the swing arm to fit it. A lot of work but I put 270,000 miles on that Wing, maybe 250K just on Car tries. I did the 4 corners of USA twice and rode from Seattle to Atlanta 3 times for the NHRA Southern Nats. The only times I had issues with LEO's was in Canada, I was given a "Fix It' warning twice.
I have been on Darkside for my Suzuki Burgman 650 "Mini-Wing" for going on 180,000 miles and maybe 10 Car tires. I mount my own.

Just happened to find this vid. Thank for the review. I had a Honda Ace Tourer and I darksided it within the first year. I motivation was just to save money. The appreciation of riding it came moths later. What I want to ask since you have the camera mounted anyway and it would show us how the tire behave is showing it sitting still and then slowly accelerating. The last time I saw this, it show how the tire ROUNDED out. While sitting still it looks flat, like a car tire should but when it starts to move faster and faster, you should be able to see the tire change shape. This will help many who are still skeptical about how this works. Other than the observation I noted, you hit on all other points. Great review thanks! (although I already knew most of it ;) )

I been riding heavy Harley’s for years and been pulling a trailer now for years. I’ll be dark siding from now on. Look at all the tread patterns to choose from. I just never thought of trying it. Now I got to figure out what size to covert to lol.

Chris great video been riding long time we are being taken advantage by motorcycle tire companies way to privacy if you really ride you get no miles
I put on 25-30k a year on my F6B, , and tried the bridgestone exedra (came stock on the bike) , dunlop elite 4, ( front and back) and avon venom ( rear only), all back tires wearing out flat in the center. No sweeping curves down here in south florida, pretty much all straight driving. So I mounted up a 185/55r16 Lionhart ( house brand tire thru Walmart) , which was chosen for the nice, soft rounded shoulders, on a used gl1800 rim purchased off craigslist. It took a little test time adjusting the pressures, but now at 45 psi, this is the best thing since New York Pizza The tire is rated for 40k miles, with a load index of 83 (1060 lbs) so time will tell . I noted the mileage and tread depth at 9.5/32", and plan to check every 5K to note wear. At 750 miles into it, So far, so good. Welcome to the Dark Side! After watching your video, I'm considering the double dark front tire swap, as the elite 4 comes to a razor sharp point center tread, riding on only 1 inch total rubber...I think the more rounded rear tire up front will help "plant" the bike at speed, and eliminate the super light, twitchy road feel over 70 mph. Great video...thanks for the priceless information!

My tire is a 205 45 18 on my 21 H D roadglide and love it been D S for over 30 years
I’ve thought about doing this. When I bought tires I was in a hurry to get rubber on my new to me used Valkyrie, so I just bit the bullet and put motorcycle tires on it. Without a doubt I will be going to the Darkside. For any big bike, it just makes sense. You can look at it from a single angle and the argument is strong for it. Example…weight. Car tire can handle a bigger load. That’s one of the reasons they last longer. That also gives the tire a greater safety margin.
That’s only one perspective and it’s undeniable. We all know it’s not the only advantage….Traction…dry weather , wet weather traction, loose or uneven surface traction. That traction advantage has two sides…braking. That bigger contact patch is going to give you better stopping. All of these advantages will boost your confidence, that boots the pleasure of the ride.
Like you said, it’s not for everyone, but those who do know what’s up.

I believe the circumference of the CT should be taken into consideration, I'm short and my goldwing is plenty high already! My old MT measures apx, 80 inches, next tire will be a car tire. Check that circumference!
It will be interesting to see just how far your darkside will go mileage wise. This mainly because the OEM radials due so poorly in miles.
Rides smoother, less handlebar vibration, after leaning the bike into a turn it wants to stand back up naturally without input. Flick right into curve-stand up-Flick left into curve-stand up.

Just getting my point across, Dunlop tires are my second choice of tires next to Darksiding
I can tell you when I ran Darkside it was a 5 mph difference between what my bike stated and what my Garmin GPS stated running about 70 at the speed you are going will be atspeed. Remember you are putting more rubber on the ground so it will make more friction.

No they did not
I have been running car tires since the 70's and have been running car radials on all my bikes even the non-trikes if the rim is a 5x16 as on the GL. I normally get 45k on each tire you will never get more than this however 60k is not going to happen in fact most wing riders get 18k or so as they run 40-44 psi rather than the correct pressure. I used to go through 2-3 tires a year now I go several years per tire - 195x60x16 is the perfect size on the wing as it corrects the speedo error also. I started the BT45 idea 12 years ago and yes it improves the ride greatly as you can run 34 psi rather than the 40 you have to run on the radials. Cornering is different but not dangerous we also did the dragon several times and not a problem fact is the most dangerous thing to do is pull a trailer. Unfortunately there is a lot of bad info on setup of these tires mostly related to way overpressurizing for unknown reasons. Factory tps will not work if you run the proper pressure of 25psi so you have to go with aftermarket. Nice review

I went double darkside shortly after buying my used 2002 Goldwing, it has never handled better. I went darkside on my Roadstar 2 years ago. No more high priced m/c tires.

Chris congratulations on the 700 videos and I thank you for doing it. With regards to darksiding I think it's more about companies loosing money from the lack of sales of the motorcycle tire. Imagine if everyone switched to a car tire overnight the money Dunlap would be out. Motorcycle repair shops loose a lot of sales too that's probably why they won't do it. I didn't hear you talk about it in your video but how was your fuel mileage after you switched to the car tire?
I paid $108 for my Bridestone Driveguard rear tire, no tax free shipping and road hazard insurance came included in the price. There is no big noticable drop in average fuel milage worth mentioning, the car tire does grips the road better than a motorcycle tire, even if the mpg dropped 1%, to me running a car tire worth the trade off.

Congrats on 700 videos been owning and riding goldwing since 1975 I'm going dark side and we will mount a car tire on a bike at my shop. What is your perferd air pressure. I have customers that ask they end up going with 45lbs most the time. If you are ever in South Dakota we are in Yankton Pops Kustoms. We specialize in goldwings.

I go through two sets of tires in a normal riding year. But I am heavy and I ride two up a lot.

I usually run 46 psi. but no more than 50 psi.

Congrats on making 700 vids. Darksiding has always been a touchy subject. You either like it or don't. Anyway, when you darkside the front tire, does it face forward or backward.

You are correct, since the Bridegestone rear BT-45 tire is put on the front darksiders recommend mounting the BT45 tire backwards, this will push water away from the bike during rain. I forgot to mention that I tried it both ways, I prefer turning the front BT45 in the forward direction, not backwards.

Sweet, I love it! Now the real question, how do you figure out what tire size and type to get?
There are comparison charts on the web. Also, you can find metric measurements to inches measurements calculators and type in your tire numbers and it will tell you the exact cross measurements.

How do you pick the car tire size? How hard was it to find a shop to put the tire on the rim? Did you pick a really sticky car tire? I hadn't thought of double dark siding. I will have to have a look to see what will fit on my FJR1300.
I’m just trying to understand sizing, are you running the same size CT as your MT?
I've been researching this for some time, there seems to be opinions all over the place, for those that say "car tire not meant for bikes", I say "Fire not meant for steak, but seems to work damn well!". I feel like if we take the time, and make the effort to learn about what we're doing, it could be worth the experience. For those sharing knowledge and experience, please be specific, size, brand, tips, etc. It all helps the riding community :)
Chris hit me $585 for a set of Bridgestone tires for my gold wing, I swap them out at 15,000 miles. The tread was pretty thin that was left on the old ones I did not trust them.

What air pressure do you run in the rear tire? I have a 2006 goldwing and just when to the dark side on the rear. I installed the Bridgestone drive guard 195-55-16. Thanks David
I usually run 46 psi, but I have ran up to 50psi.

Hey Chris I have question I hope you can either answer or point me to someone who can. Thanks. Question about going double dark. First a little info about me. I am 57 and have been ridding since I was 17. I am completely self taught and I do not consider myself a technical ridder instead just a ridder. I have an 08 Goldwing and I went dark on the rear about 6000 miles ago. I said the part about technical rider because I have not been able to tell any difference as for how the bike handles in the straights or in the curves. It handles exactly the same to me. So with that in mind if I were to go double dark what tire should I put on. I have the bridge stone drive gaurd run flat on the rear. I am going to wings over the smokies next month and plan on riding the dragon for the first time. What is everyone's opinion should I stick with a Dunlap on the front or do y'all think I will be ok with a rear bike tire on the front. Also if I do go double dark should I mount the tire right way round or backwards I have heard both?

Hey Chris and Everyone. A Newbie to the GL 1800. Question: What about riding Dark from two different tire manufacturers. Cooper for the car tire rear and Bridgestone BT for the front. Would like to hear your thoughts.
I put a dark side on my Yamaha Venture. I drifted all over the place. I think the shop that put it on for me over inflated it trying to get it to seat.
As a rider that has converted their bike to a Voyager Trike I have found most riders I know that ride converted trikes are dark siding their motorcycle's rear center tire. This is especially true with those of us that have dedicated their bike to riding as a trike 100% of the time. NOTE: The manufacturer of the Voyager Trike kit has their salesman SUGGEST their users install an automobile tire solely because the tire wears longer.

Eric Johnson there is no noticeable MPG difference, I’ve rode with other Goldwingers that are not Darksided, we all fill up at the same time. Pulling a trailer does lower the MPG a little, but it’s a good trade off, pull a trailer while Darksided is well worth it.

My brother, I'm glad you finally completed the review on the "Darkside" but I think you may be getting sued from Dunlap soon. LOL, just joking, it's your bike buy whatever you want and install it, you are the owner! I'll be joining you soon cause these dam E4s has got on my last nerves.
You can't sue a poor man, I've never been paid one penny from these big companies that make money off my recommendation like the Honda Corporation, Sena Technology, or Bridgestone just to name a few. I bought two sets of Dunlop E4s for my Goldwing, I like really like them for motorcycle tires, but it's no comparison to Bridgestone Driveguard Runflats, I rather have one Car tire compared to 4 motorcycle tires.
Carnell what problems are you having ? mines running like a charm over 20,000 miles on mine
@@chapterk-2586 Mine feels like the bike is trying to get away from me like I'm on loose gravel all the time or that brand new tire feel just won't go away. That is the best way I can sum it up and I do not like it at all.
@@CarnellLuckettSr wow i have never felt that this is my 3rd set on this 1800 and i just will never buy anther brand loved the e3 on my 1500 and love the E4 on the 1800 you have bias or steel belated radio
@@chapterk-2586 It wouldn't be your 3rd set if you was running a car tire, your E4's is at 20k miles it's time for a new tires, I know because I bought 2 sets of E4's and don't plan on going back. I know exactly how Carnell feels about the loose gravel feeling, it once to me felt like I was riding on a sheet of glass with my E4's until after I broke them in. Come over and join me with the Darkside fella's, you won't look back.
