Part of the reason why our model years are behind Europe is that it can take a year or so for the designs to be federally approved. So while Europe got the W220 in 1998 (which would likely have been a 1999 model year here), we did not get it until model year 2000. In 1998 and 1999 we still had the W140. Just found an 2001 Mercedes-Benz S-Class S 430 for $3000 with 71k miles. Looks like all it needs is the air suspension. After reading the comments, seems to be easy. I may have to pull the trigger and buy it. I know no one is going to get it. I may talk him down as well and use the money to fix the air suspension. Still need a scanner to find any other codes
I've had an S220 320 Cdi for 2 years, it's had issues but they're now so much cheaper to fix, my pal did the injector, it took an hour, to be charged at a garage it would've been at least £300, mine is a 2005
All I can say as an owner of a S-430 AMG version DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! DO NOT just buy it because it looks clean and sexy. Ask for records, look at carfax, take it to a mechanic, even Mercedes will do a operational maintenance check for not to much cash. I must have looked at 50 different cars before I chose mine. It has been in the shop for the last 3 months doing basically a frame on rebuild. Mine was owned by the SAME corporation for 17 years and used as an executive vehicle ONLY. I got all the records and history. So the cost? $2800 car, $3000 total strip, and factory code paint to original, replacement of the oil level sensor $300, NEW LEATHER front (not really needed but I had it down that far why not? $500. And because it only has 98,000 miles I paid for a fender to fender full mechanical coverage with only a $100 deductible - $3100. Maintenance contract will REPLACE anything that fails EVEN the motor with new or factory rebuilt for the next 50,000 miles! So the total cost for a car that was $96000 new (remember it is the AMG with all the bells and whistles plus)was less than $10,000. So like I said do your homework and take your time the the really good ones are still out there. (by the way the Mercedes dealer here in Tampa has already offered me MORE than I am into the car. I think the salesman wants to show off how they last when cared for.
@@GDOTV1 actually they were special order. I have all the paperwork since it was new. I also thought they were not available in the S430 . I have a w220 s500 5.4L and w210 E55. Honestly the two are not compareable, E55 is just always reddy to roll and after +45.000km all I have done is the regular oil change every 8k km, air filters every 16k km, new brakes and I did the droplinks two years back just because I got them for free... w210 E55 the best DAMN car ever made! I use to want this car then realised the Lexus LS430 is a better car and Lexus actually made a loss to produce these cars to compete by being a loss leader thus establishing a excellent reputation for value and quality. Today my nearly 20 year car sounds the same as when it left the showroom. Real world testiment to the quality. @@usher4u2 Just today I seen a beautiful S Class W221. It was stuck on the M42 motorway with its hazard lights on whilst I drove by in my Lexus LS430 and not feeling a little bit envious. Write ''lexus ls430 problems'' on google. Reliabiliy is long gone in all modern cars. Therer is a reason why the merc is used by all heads of states and dictators. It s the superior car in every way. BTW, when mercedes was puttin the first airbag in a car, lexus was barely an idea. Even today, when they put hot stone massage in seats, or back in 1997 ABC suspension, they are superior to every other car brand. I m not a fanboy, but it s just a fact.
As an owner I would urge people to avoid cars with ABC as it is ferociously expensive to repair. Also check the climate control as the duovalve is another costly repair. Used occasionally however it is a nice car if you have spare cash set aside for its inevitable repairs. Oh the Bose system seriously lacks bass although the Comand Unit can be replaced with a modern sat nav double DIN Bluetooth unit but again it’ll cost. Happy motoring !
@@lakerland24 Many MBs have ABC so you must check carefully before buying if the horror stories are not enough to put you off. You will only see it on rwd models. It debuted on the 1999 CL215 and its successor (CL216) had it too. The SLs R230 and R231 also have ABC. Finally the S classes have it too, specifically the W220 and W221. In the UK for the W220 only the S55 AMG and S600 had it as standard and knowing MB I am sure this varies for different markets. However my UK S500L has ABC ordered by the first owner and repaired at great cost by the third owner (me!). There's a reason why all of the above models are dirt cheap secondhand in any market. Extra Tip: The chassis cracks on all where the struts are. Faults : I need a bigger Page . I cant believe that Mercedes actually allowed to ad the Chrome MB Star on the end of the Hood. Have fun buying one .
I own a 2000 S500. It has been a good car with regular maintainance. They ride like a dream, turn on a dime.I do all my own work and maintainance. If a person is going to take it to the dealer then I would not recommend buying one. They are expensive to maintain if they break. Changing oil is a breeze. The filter is under the hood. Just pull the plug drain the oil, unscrew the filter, replace rings and cartridge, pour new oil in. The hood has a maintenance setting where it unlatches and tilts 90 degrees to give access to the engine bay. They are a wonderful car but you need to maintain them. They only get 16mpg and require premium fuel. Once you drive a Benz you won't want to drive anything else. They are well engineered, but don't buy it if you can't afford to maintain it. I have owned 3GM cars that have been recycled due to expensive repairs that would exceed their value, transmission, blown head gaskets etc. I still have my Benz though. It's your choice, but choose wisely.

So while Europe got the W220 in 1998 (which would likely have been a 1999 model year here), we did not get it until model year 2000. In 1998 and 1999 we still had the W140. Same with the W126, which debuted in Europe in 1979 (1980 model here) but our 1980 model was still the 116.
@@tuukkasimonen2417Correct! They were only produced in Stuttgart/Germany and production ended in August 2005. Export version were labeld as a 2006 production year. The same was for the W140. They were produced until August 1998 but the us version were modelyear '99. European versions were '98 version. Don't ask why.
Very well spoken, and informative. I enjoyed it and it’s entirety!
Just bought an S430 at Hollywood Tow for $1300. Mechaniched another $2000 in it, runs smooth. Love it.
I got a 2002 with 87k on it! No probs and never seen salt. My favorite car I've ever owned. Just do schedule maintenance.. Yes air ride. I replaced compressor. 800 bucks no big deal. But big comfy kinda fast and still a head turner!
i saw an S600 2003 model for 9.5K, and i was a bit skeptical to get in debt to get it but also didnt wanna miss out on a V12, and it was the biturbo V12 not the naturally aspirated one from earlier years.
the V8’s in here dont really exist and funnily enough the ones that do exist where i live got more of a bad treatment by their owners to them over the years than V12 owners.
Thank you for this video, i will have to rethink twice before getting in debt for a V12 merc as my first car 😂
The car that i dreamed so far ;)
The S600 & S65 is a different beasts than other trims. You should feel the well-maintained ABC, it is way better than airmatic.
But more expensive too.
It was the car of choice for CEOs and heads of state. It’s now the car of choice for kebab shop owners from Hounslow.

The most beautiful S class post In W126.
Not nearly as rugged as a W126 though.
Corrections: “S” stands for Sonderklasse (not Special). In 2003, AMG added the supercharger to the S55 (not S65) in USA. All S-class in USA are Long wheelbase (vs. shorter standard length in Europe).
But doesn't "sonder" translate to "special"🤔
@@Rupakka , yes, the translation would equal "Special Class". The other guy is a jerk.
I wouldn't say he was a 'jerk', perhaps a 'stickler' for detail, but that I believe is a proud trait of many Germans. maybe some work on judgement & tolerance. Yes, I am referring to myself. @@captainamerica9353 ................. - Bruce Lee

S430 AMG??? Confused....AMG was either an S55 or S65.
@@GDOTV1 actually they were special order. I have all the paperwork since it was new. I also thought they were not available in the S430 . It appears that was the beginning of the corporation between the 2 companies. I spent a LONG time trying to disprove that is was an AMG but found out it was true. One of a kind beast. Has all the trim and extras and I had the Mercedes dealer here in Clearwater run the vin and he was also surprised like me.
It's a 430 with AMG styling, but no performance upgrades. Some people just wanna look like their driving an AMG but not pay the fuel bill ;)

MIKE Owen how is the 3.2 treating you, I just found a beautiful 2005 with 62,000 km , I heard from my mechanic the V6 version are harder because the weight of the car is too much for the engine and tranny, but I wouldn’t mind hearing from a “true” V6 W220 owner

FrankValchiria I have one good advice it's the maintenance that gets you. Find a good independent mechanic
Now the W220 is a very nice car when all is good but that's a rare thing. there is just always something wrong, mostly minor problems like sensors but it really takes away from the car and I feel no luxury in paying for computer read out once every month.
My advice for all. BUY W210 E55, if you can find one in good condition it will be best sub 10k you'll ever spend.
Let your neighbour have the w220 and just wave to them as you leave in your problem free E55.

As an owner I would urge people to avoid cars with ABC as it is ferociously expensive to repair. Also check the climate control as the duovalve is another costly repair. Used occasionally however it is a nice car if you have spare cash set aside for its inevitable repairs.
