Interesting enough tie very car Diana was in had actually previously been stolen and
Recovered and had been in two previous accident on of which the car Had rolled several times out in a field. It was repaired and put into the Ritz limo fleet. The drivers did not like the car due to its problems and instability. But that night it was all that available and even with its problems it still held up very well in the collision. They would have all survived had they all been wearing seat belts. The guy in the front passenger seat did survive. Diana did as well, but Instead of treating her and wasting time on scene the delayed and delayed before taking her to hospital. Anyways the w140 it’s hands down the best car in every single way. It had some issues from the manufacture that were dumb like wiring harness problems. But overall mechanically these cars were sound. Their safety even by today is unrivaled. I don’t think even the newest s class is as robust in an impact as the w140.

Oh please. All the later S-class cars are more safe than W140,and most any of newer cars too.

I honestly dont think that most new cars are actually safer. HSLA steel implementation is not used as much in normal cars as in a German flagship. Plus, many new cars are smaller than the w140.

I used to have no idea why anyone regarded the W140 as the best S Class of all time. I own a W221 and it impresses me every day but man I gotta say, this is when S Classes were built with absolutely no compromise. The true meaning of "The Best or Nothing" in a single car.

I owned a W140 and this was the zenith of Mercedes engineering. Daniel, thanks so much for highlighting all the features the W140 offered. It brought back so many good memories. Btw, I owned a 1997 with parktronic sensors, reclining and heated rear seats, as well as retracting side window shades as an add ons. I don’t think these features were covered in the video. Oh, one thing that drive me crazy was the rear view mirror breaking all the time. The early w140 mirrors were adjustable with a button on the center console but people didn’t know this and would grab it to adjust hence breaking it. Also if you take the rear view mirror apart it’s not even held together by screws, but just a friction fit. From what I recall it’s meant to pop open in the even of an accident. This safety conscious Germans! I now own a W221 and it is probably the closest to build quality of w140 of all the later generations. I also have a w222 but it has all the cheap plastic components in the engine bay which will disintegrate from heat over time.

The w140 was the first production car, which by monitoring the abs wheelspeed sensors on each wheel, could detect understeer, which is common for heavy vehicles, and automatically apply brakes on only the left or right wheels, to improove high speed cornering. Thats why you can throw this over 2,6t heavy titanic into a corner and it will take it without any sign of trouble, even after more than 20 years.

Just to be very clear, I was watching the Princess Diana story as it unfolded. Diana died from but blunt-force trauma to the head. Why? She was not wearing a seatbelt. She was noted as saying "they (seatbelts) wrinkled her outfits," so she didn't wear one often. The car did its job! Not at 80mph but at 120mph, no one survives a concrete pillar. Nevertheless, 1 person walked away. Very, very impressed.

Princess Diana had multiple injuries, including a concussion. She was reported to have several broken bones and lacerations as well. But what ultimately led to the fatal outcome was the internal hemorrhaging brought about by the tear of her left pulmonary vein (brought about by the sudden deceleration) - the French surgeons were able to repair it, but weren't able to resuscitate her heart (if she would have been immediately transported to the hospital and undergone surgery, it would have been a different story).

Amazing video. My first car was a 560SEL (black on palomino) which I bought at 13 here in SoCal for 1,000 US dollars back in 2009. Great car but no where near the same level of refinement (space, insulation, features, power, handling) as the w140.
My 560SEL was totaled with me in the driver seat where I was rear ended at 40mph while sitting at an intersection.
I bought a 1997 black on two tone grey and black S600 sedan which I’ve had ever since and it’s still my daily driver.
I hate putting miles on it and the 7 dollar a gallon gas is painful (26gal tank 91 only of course) but I love doing it. It has 117,000 miles on it and the engine and trans are VERY strong.
    I’ll keep my W140 until it’s totaled or until I die (I’m 27).
Great retro music in the background and I love how you touched on Diana. I joke with my friends this is the car Diana died in (some laugh some are a little freaked out by it) but then again I believe she was murdered so there’s that off topic token for ya 🤪
Once again great vid and I learned a lot from it even though I have spent hundreds of hours on MB forums.
    Cheers from LA area, California

The French Government refused (for reasons I have never been able to discover) to give access to M-B or MI-5 to the S280 where Princess Diana met her demise.
This, of course, fueled conspiracy theories in tandem with the fact that the very same S280 had been reported as stolen in Spain just weeks prior to it being commissioned for rental use in Paris. Upon examination of the photos, Mercedes insisted that the deformation of the passenger cell was inconsistent with development and in house crash tests. The point of contention was the B-pillar, and Mercedes rejecting it separated from the body on it's own... even more fuel for the conspiracy fire. It's all very interesting.
Apparently Dodi and the driver, Henri Paul were killed instantly by the engine breaching the two fire walls and pretty much vaporizing Henri Paul while Dodi was a projectile.

This sedan (98420) saved my life. While repairing it, I accidentally ran into a 99s5 that I’m now restoring into an AMG sport with nos 1st generation AMG kit, nos amg suspension, refurbished amg exhaust, 19” amg monoblocks, and burlwood interior upgrades from AMG Japan, sport steering wheel, original SEL AMG mats, and small custom upgrades to my liking. My dream would be to swap engines one day to an e60 amg m119 engine.
With princes Diana’s birthday just passing, the ending blew my mind, as I’ve always thought her “accident” was suspect. She always said “they, meaning the establishment, do not want me to be queen”. She always feared for her life bc of how she lived hers, dangerously being a loving humanitarian didn’t sit well w many around her, as well as her romance against the grain of norm. It’s said she was “put to sleep” on the way to the hospital but many believe she died on scene bc of how the narrative was and is still pushed to this day of how mangled the vehicle was. But, as the video shows, that back space where she sat was well intact. And having been in my own accident w this sedan that saved my life, now owning my 2nd, I can honestly say now that I am older that I simply adore both this sedan and Lady Dye. May she rest in the class that she showed us all til the veRy end.

Daniel, you sound like a really passionate guy and something you said about the steering wheel being light made a light bulb in my head pop up. You said it was the light but have you ever drove a 90-92 Brougham D'Elegance. I believe its dual power steering pumps and it is also the first American car with ABS as standard. The D'Elegance package isn't a must but I would want you to experience those pillow seats that many cars try to duplicate but never really got it right like the Brougham did. It also doesnt matter if its the 5.0 or 5.7 as very little is different between the two. I drove a s500 1995 for a while but I also owned a 1991 Triple Black Brougham D'Elegance with every option plus the wire wheels and I have to say at the price range when you compare the cars, it becomes hard to pick one because they are both such great cars. I drove the 1994 model of the Cadillac and with the added power it makes sense to upgrade but something about those older models just make you feel more special. Thanks for the video, I liked and subbed.

The five speed transmission in the w140 was different from the later 5G-tronic.
The W140 had the 722.5 which was 722.4 with an electronically engaged over drive which made it a five speed.
The 722.6 came in 1996 and then was available on the W140 for two years and that one was build for a very long time.

It's one hell of a car, but that complexity really does undermine its status as the best. Most Benz mechanics hate working on it, and swear by the older W126. Try changing the A/C compressor for example....fucking hell!

@@DanielKon15 Look up "Niels van Roij Design" he reviewed the S-Class Maybach. He's a car designer and gave an industry in depth review.
Criteria: Proportional statement; 10m away, Surfacing; skin of the car (2nd layer), Jewelry; the details.
My concern with all current Mercs is the obsession with screens. I like the exterior except for the front end and massive grill. The distronic, integrated poorly. Headlight to grill ratio is just off putting.
Mercedes S-Class are designed to be 20yrs ahead. Audi, BMW and Mercedes all did horrible front ends recently. I think it had something to do with China or Japan.

A car expert says Princess Diana car was going 101-106mph.
She didn't have on her seat belt, 😥. Supposedly the body guard had on his seatbelt but maybe just on the waste portion. The driver didn't have on a seat belt.

Dude you gotta check Ed Bolian channel, I think it was the Mustang Cannon Ball run, the one in COVID where the spotters we're driving a W212 and it got hit by a tractor trailer, very strong cars from Mercedes.

Hmm. Very impressive. However the W140 was a car designed to make the occupants feel important. Way bigger than it needed to be. Totally lacked the grace of the preceding model, the W126 and whilst admittedly better built than its successor the gorgeous W220, was equipped with a biodegradable wiring loom so good luck with that!
