  • Scenario: Bleeding Control and Tourniquet Application
This is the first of several scenarios we will be releasing that show how practical first-aid skills should be used in a real-world setting. The point of these scenarios is to help people see from start to finish what treatment should look like since the real world often looks much different than classroom scenarios.

Good stuff. Another consideration regarding prevention is utilizing a hard hat. I've seen more deaths from falling widow makers while cutting trees than actual chainsaw injuries.

Would you do anything to prevent or treat shock? Like giving the patient a blanket or fluid ( water ?) because of the blood loss?

Keeping them warm is important. Especially if they have lost a lot of blood. Drinking water doesn’t replenish the fluid loss fast enough and could be dangerous if they end being sedated for surgery later. So hold off on anything by mouth until they get to a surgery center. Great questions!

When using the CAT tourniquet make sure you wrap the Velcro all the way around, the rescuer in this video did not do that, you can see the red tab on the end laying on the ground and the victim secured it. Failure to secure all of the Velcro mat allow the band to slip loose as the windlass is getting tighter.
