This video just appeared on my recommendations, I've watched like 150 videos on SH2 and I'll be damned if I don't watch another one that lasts 3 hours. Looking forward to it!
I played this game for the first time a little over a year ago and it meant a ton to me. I was in a relationship that was starting to crumble and I was honestly afraid to break it off. The scene toward the end of the game when James finally accepts that he has to do what needs to be done was super powerful to me. The “I couldn’t accept it because I was weak” was honestly one of the most powerful moments in any game to me because of how much is resonated with me. I usually don’t comment on videos but that whole last little bit where you explained why it meant so much to you, made me think about why this game is special to me. Fantastic video 🤙
The original Silent Hill 2 from 2001 was released 13 days after the 9/11 attacks and despite this game not showing or mentioned anything about terrorist or even hijacked planes but it does show the emotions the people were going through after the 9/11 attacks like anger, confusion, depression, fear and sadness.
No matter how much remakes they do on silent hill games , sh2 and sh3 originals will always be masterpieces, 2 of the greatest games from team silent for ps2
Holy macaroni man, this film production video blows my mind, I always had the thought that sh2 is one of the most overrated silent hill of the first four but after watching this video i know why people love this game so much and you make me see it in another light now. This analysis is so great, the jokes are funny and the narration is good, i think this is one of the greatest videos I've seen this year. So this is a thanks for all the effort you put doing this masterpiece. I hope to see your analysis in the other games in this awesome franchise (yes, including after team silent) good job man 👏
About Maria's creation: I've recently felt that she is born from both James' AND Mary's wishes together, or at least the first version of Maria is. In the basement of the hospital, she tells James that she feels it's her duty to protect Laura. We later find out that Mary was a good friend of Laura's and even saw her as a daughter. Maria can't explain why she should feel that way, she just does. Maria seems to have picked up this feeling from Mary. She could partially be Mary's wishes to be healthy, daring, pretty, and to have the ability to please James and protect Laura. After Maria dies the first time, I think we get a version of her that is more designed by Silent Hill with the purpose of further torturing James. Her mannerisms change to be more sinister and seductive, and she is quickly ripped away from him again.
I think Maria's behavior adjusts according to James' own mental state. (he knows that Mary would be concerned about Laura; so Maria is concerned about Laura...but, she isn't consistent when it comes to her concern for Laura's safety). If Maria was somehow being influenced by Mary's spirit, that concern for Laura would never falter.
@@madamefluffy4788 Considering that James didn't know Laura, and Maria recalls a memory of Laura in 'Born From A Wish", before ever even meeting Laura, it's safe to assume that she's being formed by more than just James. Be it James and Laura's memories, or James and Mary.

Yeah…I’m gonna need you to make a video exactly like this for SH3 immediately (but for real this is one of the best SH2 overviews I’ve ever watched, keep up the great content!)
Of all the creepy moments in OG Silent Hill 2 - that employee elevator was the one that creeped me out the most. At first, I thought it was just the heavy weapons that was causing the weight issue; but the lighter I made James and the alarm kept going off every time I entered the elevator, my dread grew - first thinking that Mary's ghost was weighing him down, then the realization that I would be entering enemy territory, blind and defenseless.
1:39:20 Yes! Finally, someone agrees with me on this point. This is why I've always thought Angela's dialogue in the grave yard was so well done. The way she says "Lost?" with such incredulity, and then is immediately just kind of frightened and unsure of James isn't weird voice acting, but a young woman who knows this man who just came out of the fog is lying to her. As you said, "she knows that people don't just get called here for nothing."

Reporting back after the first week of SH2 Remake’s release: it’s absolutely fantastic and it pays respect to the original while making changes/additions that MAKE SENSE. It’s much longer than the original, yes. But it genuinely feels like a journey and it’s rewarding to play through. They made extra sure not to damage the game’s aesthetic or atmosphere and it paid off. So happy that it was made

Thanks a lot for such an articulate review/summary with colourful commentary. I finally finished my first play through last month, after trying it for the first time as a kid on release. It was the ultimate game to play during sleepovers but the farthest we’d get would always be the hospital lol. I bought and calibrated an old Sony CRT, played on my PS2 at night in the dark, and took my time in every room despite knowing most spoilers. This video was a great way to cap that experience off. Kudos!
Also I usually try to wait until I finish a vid before commenting, but I'm just in awe of the cinematics, the music, and thoughtful organization of this retrospective. I've grown so tired of video essays lately bc many of them just feel like rambling without a thesis or focus. Amazing work, thanks for sharing.
Phenomenal video. One of the best Silent Hill 2 retrospectives I ever ever hsd the opportunity to watch, and I watched a lot. Looking forward to more. The personal story in the end was really touching and a very eloquent addition.
After watching all of this without skipping a second i can safely say that this was amazing. Im a silent hill enjoyer who only doesn't like 2, but even though i have seen the appeal of what drew people into it i couldn't grasp it completely until this video. Your essays, along with the music you make is great and thats a hard thing to pull of in my opinion. Keep doing what you do ^^
Silent Hill 2 is my favourite game. Period. For me, it’s the only game that has gotten more terrifying the older I’ve gotten. I played it as a young teen and thought it was edgy in just the right ways. Now I play it in my thirties now that I’m married and it’s my absolute worst nightmare. Just the idea that the person you love most in this world is suffering, and you’re forced into an impossible mindset… I’ve watched pretty much every retrospective on this game, and this is the first one that taught be something I didn’t know, that being the existence of the novel. Thank you for making such an excellent video on such an excellent game!
@@HyperTensionJohnny Bro! You more than did justice to my baby! You deserve a gold play button, the work you put into this oozes from the finished product!
Well, the algorithm tossed this to me, and man, yep one of the best SH2 retrospectives I've seen. It's like every time you come back to discussions on this game, there's something fresh. Also, rewinded to hear that intro music again after watching the whole thing. Props dude, you had me thinking someone was actually knocking on my wall lmao
This is absolutely amazing. Seriously. I've watched so many vids on the lore and meanings of SH2 and your vid is by far the best! Learned so much and cannot wait to see your other gems. Keep it up!
Something to look forward to as I head into work on the night shift. I appreciate the work you put into your videos- I’m sure long form content is very taxing in particular but you’re absolutely killing it man!
I thought that Mary’s body being covered by a blanket in the back seat of the car (at the beginning of the game) was an idea that came from OOB exploring the remake - so how do we know her body is there in the original?
Awesome video man!! I needed this. Everything down to the personal story at the end. Silent hill 2 is my favorite game of all time and I think this is the most in depth video I’ve seen about it so far 👍
This was such an amazingly in-depth and engaging retrospective. One can really tell how much research and thought went into this. I really enjoy your manner of speech too, didnt seem like you were reading a 100 page script. It was as if we were actually having a 3 hour long, one-sided conversation. I would have gladly sat through 3 more hours of you talking about this. The silent hill series was a major part of my childhood and I still have a hard time playing them by myself because of how much they effected me as a kid. Bitter-sweet trauma, I guess 😅 Definitely subscribing. Now I'll just be sitting here binging old videos and awaiting new ones 🧎🏻♀️
That's very kind of you. I'm so happy you enjoyed it 🤘🏻 and thank you for sharing your experience with SH. I love reading about people's experiences with good games. More soon 🙂
You seriously deserve more views and subscribers. Enjoyed this a lot. Great video! I also appreciate the small comparisons between platforms and covering Born from a Wish. I am sorry to hear about your grandma too, but I am also glad that she was kind hearted and allowed you to still be with us today.
@@HyperTensionJohnny yeah man! Absolutely. Quick question tho, 12:26 you mention that he’s already in the fog world or affected by it here. But he hasn’t walkthrough the fog on the path leading to the town or even entered silent hill at this point, right? Or am I mistaken? Or was that just how you interpreted it?
James is in the Fog world by the time the game starts. He's already had his psychotic break from reality after doing...what he did...and the town called to him. The trip down the Toluca forest path is more for the player's sake, as if to emphasize that you are in deep now with James. Very happy you enjoyed the vid, man. Cheers 🍻
Dude you put so much effort into this project, I just wanted to leave a comment and tell you it was a great watch! Can't imagine how many hours of preparation went into this. You deserve way more views. I'm not even a huge fan of this game, only played it once when it came out. Didn't understand the story back then as a kid. Hope they don't screw up the story for "modern audiences" in the Remake.
this is the best video analysis i have experienced for silent hill 2. i enjoyed every bit and looking forward to the next video. may the algorithm gods find their way to you

This is how you do justice to a legendary game. The fact that you played the game in it's original form to conserve the artists' original vision speaks volumes. Sure it's nice to get cleaned up versions of games, but certain games just benefit on looking more gritty. Fantastic work.
@@theroguerider He explained that he used an ISO from his disc (and why). It's still the ps2 game. Like I get what you mean, but it's really not a big deal.
yeah man, don't be so hard on it. for the most part it's as close to original you're gonna get. The pc overhaul , which is fantastic, is a bit too clean, ps2 original hardware is getting harder and jankier to work with because of age. hell ps3s are slowly dying tech wise just from being old. the new pcsx2 emulator that released earlier lasr month is almost, if not true 1:1 now. he's capturing the spirit of the ps2 which is indeed very important @@theroguerider
I don’t know if you will see this, but I just want to say that the work you do is incredible. Not only are you putting together videos with insanely high production quality, but it amazes me that you produce your own music for each video! The music in this video was something straight out of a movie or the game itself. It’s baffling that you only have 5k subs, keep at it, there’s no doubt in my mind that soon you will have hundreds of thousands of fans! I appreciate all the work that goes into your videos
Fantastic video, a great treatise on this masterpiece of a game that we all adore so much. Utterly stunned. Two points, however: #1 The concept of the Death of the Author is supreme WRT any piece of art. Once the author releases their work out to the world, they no longer "own" it, and the process of consuming and interpreting the art is no longer under their exclusive control. As annoying and possessive as many Silent Hill 2 fans are, I completely disagree when you say that Ito's theories (or any of the devs for that matter) nullify everyone else's. We may choose to believe them when they share their interpretations, but we don't *have* to, and this is part of the beauty of consuming art as a whole. Fans telling Ito he's wrong is annoying, but in the grand scheme of things, they have the right to assert their authorship over the consumption of art. You said it yourself; part of the sheer beauty of Silent Hill 2 was the sheer number and variety of ways fans interpret every facet of it, and the fact these interpretations are even possible was absolutely Team Silent's intention. How boring would it be if only Team Silent were allowed to declare what their work means? #2 I admire your maturity and cautious optimism wrt the upcoming remake, but I simply cannot feel the same; the actual main reason many dread the remake is because Bloober Team CANNOT BE TRUSTED. Many of the carnal sins of contemporary horror media, they have performed in spades. They have been pathologically unoriginal and creatively lacking throughout their catalogue of games, and Bobvids has a grand series of mini-documentaries here on TH-cam covering their crimes against horrir. Give them a watch and see how your optimism stands up.
Hey man, awesome review. Really fucking good. This is such a timeless game. Really cool to hear your personal story at the end too, that's an incredible story - I can see how the game would be so impactful at that time in your life. It's such a great game about dealing with guilt, self questioning, grief and more. I hope you find continued success in whatever you do, you deserve it.
I stayed up way too late watching this. Thank you, Johnny… and for sharing your story at the end. I feel like we would’ve definitely been friends if we grew up in the same neighborhood. 🤘🏻
Great video on an amazing game. Sometimes I wonder if the remake will tarnish the reputation of the game just for the original being so memorable in every way it's nearly impossible to top.
Yeah, we just gotta let go of all things; and maybe later you’ll want to come back to just play the game. Disoriented? Heh, try ending up crashing through the ER after dissociating from 28 hours in, ahawr (ok its a slight part of the reason, but I was getting emotional over those too hardcore SA themes and the whole…started thinking how I’d react if my soulmate died, we’re getting married soon.) I’ve cried during the OG game and during this one. Mary’s monologue… it’s always going to kill me (figuratively, I’m safe, promise.)
it was just a joke, I’ve been playing games for ages but I lost interest in this hobby for many reasons. Maybe it’s just because I’m too old for the type of games that are developed, except for rare occasions and this is one of those (luckily). So it kinda light up a sparkle that was long gone and now I find myself back to where I started. But I am so happy that bloober overcame that sea of nonsense and crticism when the first footage came out. This game means so much to me, it’s a core memory of my late childhood (I can’t believe my parents allowed me to play SH2 so early btw). We are so lucky to have this masterpiece.
Man this just popped up in my recommended. Watched it all the way through. What a fantastic job. This game has been haunting me and yet has also been my best friend for the past 23 years. I also have a personal story connected to it that turns out I ended up manifesting into my life throughout those 2 decades. I hope I don't end up like James.
I don't think In Water is canon because I perceive James' ordeal through the town itself as the punishment for his crimes. I think Mary telling him that the suffering was enough In Water could be read as her definitively stating that what he suffered through was enough and it can end now I.E. his punishment through Silent Hill is over. Leave has him both getting through his suffering and not falling victim to the town like Angela and Eddie did. In Water is a reflection of Angela's ending (Suicide) whilst Mariah is a reflection of Eddie (Embracement) but Leave is truly James' own.
As someone who also enjoys classic RE and Silent Hill, I never understood the "clunky combat" complaint, both games seemed to play the same in my opinion. On your video, sir, this was very well done. I really enjoyed the original soundtrack you used throughout, it was a breath of fresh air in the sea that is stock music. I really liked your analysis and breakdown of this game. And the video was well edited. I should definitely check out more of your channel because it's a shame you don't have a larger following.
Well I will say I think SH 1 in particular has better combat and has aged well compared to the original RE games but SH2 I felt had worse combat because they made the guns and melee weapons feel way more useless and you were force to stomp on enemies to kill them because your bullets did shit for damage
I always find it magical how certain pieces of media can take on a legendary sort of quality when we find them when are going through it. I’m glad you had SH2 when things were shitty. RIP Joan Killer video, you did the damn thing.

Thank you for a great voice-over and video. I played the first games when they came out and hearing a 'younger youtubers' try and break this game down is always funny to me. Im a silent hill enjoyer who only doesn't like 2, but even though i have seen the appeal of what drew people into it i couldn't grasp it completely until this video. Your essays, along with the music you make is great and thats a hard thing to pull of in my opinion. Keep doing what you do ^^
Thank you so much; new video today or tomorrow 🤘🏻
The "If that's true why do you look so sad?" line always gets to me.
Accountability is a big theme in the game. It hurts, for sure.
Just on the editing alone I'm subscribing.
Just the idea that the person you love most in this world is suffering, and you’re forced into an impossible mindset…
I’ve watched pretty much every retrospective on this game, and this is the first one that taught be something I didn’t know, that being the existence of the novel.
Thank you for making such an excellent video on such an excellent game!
I hope I did justice to your favorite, man. I hear you on the relatable thing. It gets worse every year
🥲
@@HyperTensionJohnny Bro! You more than did justice to my baby! You deserve a gold play button, the work you put into this oozes from the finished product!
Another few hour long SH video? Straight into my watch list. Sick intro btw.
Thank you 🤙
Love that this came up! You have a great voice and great style of video making! Can’t wait to see more from you
Thank you, man. More on the way.
Eddie Van Halen is a god
Well, the algorithm tossed this to me, and man, yep one of the best SH2 retrospectives I've seen. It's like every time you come back to discussions on this game, there's something fresh.
Also, rewinded to hear that intro music again after watching the whole thing. Props dude, you had me thinking someone was actually knocking on my wall lmao
Thank you!
Will be on the new album, coming soon 😃
This is absolutely amazing. Seriously. I've watched so many vids on the lore and meanings of SH2 and your vid is by far the best! Learned so much and cannot wait to see your other gems. Keep it up!
I'm humbled 😌
Thank you 🤙
Something to look forward to as I head into work on the night shift. I appreciate the work you put into your videos- I’m sure long form content is very taxing in particular but you’re absolutely killing it man!
Hope you enjoyed, buddy ✌️
I thought that Mary’s body being covered by a blanket in the back seat of the car (at the beginning of the game) was an idea that came from OOB exploring the remake - so how do we know her body is there in the original?
Your original music is great!
Thank you 🤙 😊
Oh man. This is going to be GREAT. I love the Silent Hill franchise. And you always drop solid takes. So I am HYPED.
Hell yeah, Frost. Hope you enjoyed 🤙
@@HyperTensionJohnny Hell yeah I did! btw, that second amendment counter back at Japan was BRUTAL, lmao.
@FrostChildStudios 😆 just jokes. Got love for my Japanese homies and, frankly, they have certain norms I wish we'd adopt.
@FrostChildStudios the Kevin Nash pic made me spit water
This has been excellent so far. great job man
Cheers, Kaz. Thank you 🤙
I never noticed those other paintings in the prison damn.
The ending is beautiful, thank you so much for this piece of content, brilliant work.
Cheers, man. Thank you 🍻
Underrated creator, keep it up you have a talent for articulating new viewpoints.
Much appreciated
Uhhhh yeah, it call spiderman 3 for the Xbox 360
Your videos and music are on another level IMO.
Truly humbled 🙂
More soon 🤘🏻
Awesome video man!! I needed this. Everything down to the personal story at the end. Silent hill 2 is my favorite game of all time and I think this is the most in depth video I’ve seen about it so far 👍
Thank you. So happy you enjoyed it, man 🤙

Wish you made a video like this for sh 1,3, and 4 😭
This was such an amazingly in-depth and engaging retrospective.
Bitter-sweet trauma, I guess 😅
Definitely subscribing.
Thank you, buddy. That's very kind of you to say. More on the way ✌️
What a brilliant recview and deconstruction. Thank you.
Thank YOU, buddy ✌️
Here from the future and I think blonde knocked it out of the park with the remake
James don't need a Dodge Ram, he need a Ford F-650. Small city car.
I will never not watch a new silent hill 2 video and this is already bad ass. Subbed!
Cheers, Erin. 🍻
Thank you 🤙
God damn I love finding silent hill videos I haven’t seen yet but one that’s 3 hours long??? Can’t wait to watch this tonight
Hope you enjoy(ed) it!
Or was that just how you
interpreted it?
James is in the Fog world by the time the game starts. He's already had his psychotic break from reality after doing...what he did...and the town called to him. The trip down the Toluca forest path is more for the player's sake, as if to emphasize that you are in deep now with James.
Very happy you enjoyed the vid, man. Cheers 🍻
Another absolutely beautiful video, bro
I'm humbled, thank you 😌
Dude you put so much effort into this project, I just wanted to leave a comment and tell you it was a great watch!
Can't imagine how many hours of preparation went into this. You deserve way more views.
I'm not even a huge fan of this game, only played it once when it came out. Didn't understand the story back then as a kid.
Hope they don't screw up the story for "modern audiences" in the Remake.
Thank you, man. Definitely took some time. 🤙
Finally, an interesting video on yourtube! It was very good, hats off to you
Thank you kindly 🤙
this is the best video analysis i have experienced for silent hill 2. i enjoyed every bit and looking forward to the next video. may the algorithm gods find their way to you

Love the video, always glad to see a mature and independent perspective on one of my favorite games of all time
I'm looking forward to your remake review if you ever do one
BTW 1:58:11 am I catching a twin peaks reference? A true man of taste I see ❤
Thank you, buddy. Yup, it was. Wait until the end of the video 🤙

Thank you for hearing it out 🤙
Awesome retrospective

no fucking way hyper johnny is making a 2.5h review of my favourite videogame
3h video i am blind sorry
Hell yeah, buddy.
This was fantastic!!!
Thank you very much 🤙
Wow, just wow, that's an amazing video, and i still haven't finished it yet
Thank you, man. Super happy to hear that 🤙
This is how you do justice to a legendary game. The fact that you played the game in it's original form to conserve the artists' original vision speaks volumes. Sure it's nice to get cleaned up versions of games, but certain games just benefit on looking more gritty. Fantastic work.
Cheers, mate. Thank you 🤙
Though a ripped ISO on a computer that stretches it to widescreen isn’t its “original form”.
@@merces47letifer4 but to say it’s in its original form when it’s stretched isn’t really original. That’s all I’m saying.
Thank you, Jay. Thank you for the kind words. All my best to you ✌️
Remake video soon...
Fantastic video, a great treatise on this masterpiece of a game that we all adore so much. Utterly stunned.
Two points, however:
#1 The concept of the Death of the Author is supreme WRT any piece of art.
Bravo, Sir!
What an excellent video😮
Thank you 🤙
I stayed up way too late watching this. Thank you, Johnny… and for sharing your story at the end. I feel like we would’ve definitely been friends if we grew up in the same neighborhood. 🤘🏻
Hell yeah, buddy. Late nights with WWF No Mercy lol
Great video on an amazing game. Sometimes I wonder if the remake will tarnish the reputation of the game just for the original being so memorable in every way it's nearly impossible to top.
Thank you, buddy. I hope it succeeds, but, either way, it definitely won't please everyone.
My go-to "SH2=best" example is the elevator quiz
I'll come back to watch this video again when it blows up
⏳️ 🕐
best silent hill 2 video yet… n ive seen them all lol
I am here after achieving the remake platinum trophy. I am so lost, my goty without any doubt. Now that everything is done I feel disoriented 😞
Dude, stellar work. That's a strong accomplishment! Don't be sad that it ended, be happy that we lived it 😊
Remake review on channel tomorrow...
Yeah, we just gotta let go of all things; and maybe later you’ll want to come back to just play the game.
Disoriented? Heh, try ending up crashing through the ER after dissociating from 28 hours in, ahawr (ok its a slight part of the reason, but I was getting emotional over those too hardcore SA themes and the whole…started thinking how I’d react if my soulmate died, we’re getting married soon.)
I’ve cried during the OG game and during this one.
This is great my man!!!
Thank you 🤙 😊
Thanks for sharing your experience in the epilogue.
Thank you 🤙
3 hours of geeking out for no reason at all. This could've been 30 min easily
Geeking out on a gaming channel? This is madness.
Stay the path.
Be strong on your journey. 🤘🏻
Would love too now see what you think of team bloopers remake
Soon.
I always find it magical how certain pieces of media can take on a legendary sort of quality when we find them when are going through it.
I’m glad you had SH2 when things were shitty.
RIP Joan
Killer video, you did the damn thing.
Thank you, DH. Spread her ashes this weekend. Very special woman.
Side note, really looking forward to what you're cooking. Take time and make it good like you always do. I watched your Visage video the other day, I meant to leave a comment. TOP RATE, dude.
@@HyperTensionJohnnyHey man, it was a touching tribute- and I’m glad you got to do her that final service.
It’s hardcore stuff. But the mark of an amazing person is how much they are missed when they are gone.
If not this week, next week for sure for the next video. Had to abandon one for a later day. Just gotta hustle in the downtime.
And thank you for checking out that video- I was really still figuring it out back when I posted that one. I’m still very much figuring it out til this day tho.
It’s really cool that you watch my stuff, I’m a huge fan of what you are doing- so the fact that you’re are checking my stuff out… feels good man 🍻
Let’s take over this platform 💪🏻
it was from a world that is long gone now, sadly. and even in that world, it was an anomaly.
Thank you for a great voice-over and video. I played the first games when they came out and hearing a 'younger youtubers' try and break this game down is always funny to me. Life teaches us more about this deep sadness we share with the characters over time. Your love of those around you grows just by speaking it here. Alan Watts did call writing the true witchcraft.
What's next will be a tough question for you?
Has team silent
Ever confirmed
Marry is in the trunk of the car
Ito-san confirmed she's in the back seat
Incredible video. I can personally never bring myself to go for anything other than the In Water ending. Just personal preference I suppose. I enjoyed this very much!
Cheers, Barry 🍻 super stoked you enjoyed it
