The people commenting "just buy skateboard tape" just don't get it. This is a great permanent upgrade. And it's fun! BUT.....there is a downside. About 3 months ago I started my stippling project: a P-mag. It did take a couple hours, but it turned out amazing! I drank a few beers while doing the project and by the time I had finished, I was so impressed with the results.....I turned my attention to my Smith & Wesson M&P22. I stippled the hell out of it. It doesn't look bad...but it is pretty aggressive. Not nearly as cool looking as my P-mag. I won't be slipping it inside my waistband holster though. (Not that I would with a .22 anyways, but just saying) I'm glad I at least left my other guns alone that night!
Your video is the only one that shows how to use a simple standard tip to begin and look good too. Thanks to you my shockwave is %100 stippled and looks good too! Took 3 hours! It's so much better now! Thanks man!
Looks great, and the texture is always a great function. For those that want to slap tape on your firearms, I consider that a combat/emergency temp fixture. Tape is always a temp fixture to anything. I like the aggressive texture, the Miad grip and a few some firearms comes that way.
mrfiux How was it with flying your kit over, im going to the US for college and I live in the UK, what did you have to do to get your guns on the airplane without them going all investigation on your arse, should be getting UKARA soon
Michael Davis LOL. No worries, I have tried airsoft twice... Both here in Maidenhead but it got boring fast compared to three gun matches or IDPA. Note to all I still have all my guns.... At my parents house. Airsoft would allow you to carry them in the cargo hold without any limitations. Even planning on bringing shotgun and .22 over waiting on shotgun certificate to pass through.
I think I like your technique best so far. I like the smaller dots that are not in any type of pattern. Some people will do it in lines starting on the bottom or top and it doesn't look natural or "factory". Anyway, good job on that, might be doing my FDE Glock 17 when I can find one. lol
Great video mrliux. To the wacko's saying to throw your gun away if you have to pull the magazine...it's not for removing the magazine. The AR ejects it just fine, it is for handling and loading the magazines. You don't want to drop a mag in the middle of a rainy competition. And as mrfiux said, it looks cool as hell :)
Not to jack your tutorial, but I do have a tip. When you are stippling move to different areas every 30 seconds or so. This keeps your muscle memory and fatigue from setting a pattern. It's the same with checkering or most anything small and repetitive. Great vid.
If you guys think this is tedious, try stippling steel lol. A little hammer and a punch, tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap, reposition, tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap lol. At least you can go fast with a soldering iron in plastic, if you mess up with steel there's no repairing that blemish so you gotta take your time. Stippling looks so good though, and is the best grip surface you can get, I've done it to a number of my guns. I run aluminum mags in my AR though, I don't think stippling those would be a good idea lol... If anyone reading this wants to try stippling steel, I'd recommend using a strip of UHMW plastic as a hammer, a piece 2" wide, 3/4" thick and 8"-10" inches long as your hammer, you can shape a grip on one end for a handle. It strikes a lot harder than most people would think because it weighs so much and is extremely elastic, it causes a sharp rebound on your punch that makes very consistent punch marks in the steel, and a wide strike face will reduce whoops-marks. A steel hammer is very easy to overstrike with. Also, instead of holding your punch in your hand, take a couple tongue depressors and tape them to the punch in the middle perpendicular to the punch. Sandwich the punch between them, leaving about an inch hanging out on one end so you can wrap tape on either side, kind of like a cross. This will give you a handle to hold the punch more accurately and with far less stress on the wrists. When striking, hold the punch firmly and perpendicular to the workpiece, about 1/16" above the spot you want to strike, and use light taps, slowly increasing strike speed, until you find the indent size you want. A lot of this is muscle memory, and I highly suggest practicing on something that is _not_ a gun until you feel comfortable with your consistency and preferred texture. Holding the punch slightly above the workpiece allows it to gain velocity, and instead of using brute force to displace the metal, the velocity of the punch itself is what does the marking. Borders are important when stippling steel, it looks very unprofessional if the borders aren't crisp and clean. Start by very carefully creating an accurate border around the areas to be stippled, spend a lot of time accurately striking these areas, a single mishap will be glaringly obvious around the edges. Once the borders are done you can go a lot faster filling in the middle areas.
Very nice. Those are some nice looking mag's. And it's nice to see those soldering irons have a use. They are not much good for electronics. It's like trying to do surgery with a butter knife. I've always thought they might be nice for doing wood burning projects, where you write or draw on wood. Anyways, great tip on the mag's. Peace.

This process works like champ.... BUT... it took me almost 2 hours for 1 mag. Now, was it worth it? Absolutely. They turned out great. I used a soldering iron that got up to 900 degrees and it put some serious traction on the mags.
Dude, protip, just buy some skateboard/traction tape and cut it down into little squares and stick it on! The adhesive is very strong and the actual grip has exceptionally traction. It would also take a lot less time and effort than this method.
yes grip tape costs money but so does having your mags stippled, or if you do it your self its gonna take along time and probably look like poop, and no grip tape does not peel off EASILY if you wipe your mag with rubbing alcohol before
I just did a couple myself, and they definitely don't look like "poop", in fact it looks factory done. And yes, eventually the tape will peel off, no matter how much alcohol you wipe it down with...
mrfiux I would hardly consider $3 a roll an investment so as far as the money factor goes, it's no problem. It does eventually peel off but the pro for grip is is not having to melt your guns... I stippled the backstrap on my M&P which does not look at all like POOP. I still use grip tape for the front of the grip and where my thumbs go. I may even consider stippling my 30 round non California legal PMAGS as well.
Why not just wrap some grip tape around it? Doesn't need to look great it just needs to work, and some grip tape would be way easier, faster, and probably work just as well. But I suppose the grip tape could peel off so what do I know? great vid.
+Kenneth Basham That's a blanket statement to make. Yes, we all cuss from time to time. We watch USPSA and other gun related videos together often. It just sucks you had to ruin a good video. My 9 year old shoots pistols and enjoys the things that I do, hence, watching it with her.

STOP! You have a problem lol

I would have to be really bored to even do this, but I commend this man for carrying on with this process.
glad you added that last safety tip "careful not to fuckin burn yourself" HAHA
"Not really sure why you need 'em on the PMAGS. I just do it cuz it looks cool as FUCK" LOL Great job sir
Best part of the video!! 😂😂
I made some of my own tips to make for better coverage. And a little fan on low does wonders for the fumes

Looks awesome! Great vid! 👍🏻 I already have a soldering iron & a respirator. Looks like I found a new little DIY project for winter. Lol.
Love how i was looking how to stipple a pmag and a fellow Oregonian is teaching me,Looks good Mr.Fiux!
Thanks
Rob-
Thanks man, unfortunately I left Tillamook this year to come live in gunless lawless UK. But I do make trips to the US about twice a year.
mrfiux How was it with flying your kit over, im going to the US for college and I live in the UK, what did you have to do to get your guns on the airplane without them going all investigation on your arse, should be getting UKARA soon
Michael Davis just realized this isn't an airsoft video, my apologies
Michael Davis LOL. No worries, I have tried airsoft twice... Both here in Maidenhead but it got boring fast compared to three gun matches or IDPA. Note to all I still have all my guns.... "I do them because they look coool as fuck!!"
"I just do it cuz it looks cool AF!" BOSS
Cheers mate!
Now I can stipple my mags dates and say I got them during freedom week! Thanks!
I have yet to try that John, but will do once I get back since I am in England at the moment.
funny. I have watched so many stippling videos... I think this is easily the best one.
19 days later u finish one mag ! :D
Right. I haven’t gotten this level bored yet.
Did you mean one square?
I think I like your technique best so far. I like the smaller dots that are not in any type of pattern. Some people will do it in lines starting on the bottom or top and it doesn't look natural or "factory". Anyway, good job on that, might be doing my FDE Glock 17 when I can find one. lol
Apparently yes you can. And it allows for more precise control and choice of tips for design

Except, checkering is supposed to be very specific pattern
I have yet to try it on different magazines. Wood burner will work as well.
Random like that looks so much better than doing the dots in straight lines like everyone else does.
"I just do it cause it looks cool as fuck"
Fuck yeah

Could you use a wood burner for this.
Best technique so far.
Perfect time to do this!
Hahaha "Be careful not to fuckin burn yourself"
You'll need a loooong winter to do this to 6 or more mags^^
great job man they look good video was helpful thanks
Should I throw away my range bag and mag pouches too?
does this weaken the mags in any way? thanks
Cool vid dude, i live in oregon as well.

Two hours? What the fuck were you doing? Took me twenty minutes for each mag.
mrfiux best response ever. .
I'm cracking up and that response too.. omg ur hilarious mrfiux
+Mini Dane Owner He was stippling the inside of the mag.

JK! What about using tennis tape?
How about using tennis grip tape? Anyone tried that?
Dude, protip, just buy some skateboard/traction tape and cut it down into little squares and stick it on! The adhesive is very strong and the actual grip has exceptionally traction.

if it feels like skateboard grip, then why not just use the grip tape?

Why not just wrap some grip tape around it? Doesn't need to look great it just needs to work, and some grip tape would be way easier, faster, and probably work just as well. But I suppose the grip tape could peel off so what do I know? great vid.
Buy some MOB grip tape at a local skateboarding shop

great video until you started dropping F bombs. Appreciate it with my 9 year old daughter sitting here with me. Classy!
