      Great video!
My favorite neighborhood is Azabu. I like the greenery and access to three different train lines. ^_^

    • @DadCanInJapan
      @DadCanInJapan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I knew Hachioji wasn't going to be on the list. :-) So my review ...
ACCESS: Since we are near the end of the train line, you can get a seat on the train and actually have a decent 1-hour nap as you travel to downtown Tokyo.
PRESTIGE: Seems to be popular with Japanese sporting tattoos.
LIVABILITY: OK. This is where Hachioji ranks high in my opinion. Nice ethnic mix with lots of authentic ethnic restaurants. Apartments and houses are some of the cheapest around Tokyo (see above). Lovely view of the mountains and near to Mt. Takao where you can get an amazing view of Mt. Fuji. But the main plus ... it is not built on reclaimed land so it will not sink into Tokyo Bay when the next (overdue) big earthquake hits Tokyo!

@@DadCanInJapan It's definitely a nice place. I just can't deal with the crowds on the Chuo Line. Otherwise I totally agree with you.

1300/month for rent IS a bang for your buck if you're a foreigner and watching this. Have you been to America lately? You won't be living in the best spots in most major cities for those prices.
Want cheaper? Enjoy living far away with bad amenities and in the case of America...higher crime.

I just got here after watching your collab with Connor. I've been living in Tokyo for a few years and I like to look at apartment listings sometimes, so it was really fun for me to try to guess the price based on what we saw and the available info.
Really cool content. You got a new sub.
A nice list of neighborhoods. I've never really considered Yoyogi park area as the top, but it sure has everything you need, great access, also pretty quiet relatively to its location.
I'd like to see your take on the best neighborhoods when it comes to cost/performance. Places that aren't as expensive as the likes of Nakameguro, Shibuya or Azabu, but are really nice and convenient to live in.

I wanted to be away from the city center a bit. I moved from Yoyogi to Kichijoji and absolutely love it.
You are a straight shot to both shibuya and shinjuku, great supermarkets (some international resale places) and tons of restaurants.
Kichijoji also has a huge underground punk music scene and a great park for walking/ running with tennis courts and the Gibli museum to boot.
I'd say it's considered a trendy area, but the prices are far below those mentioned in the video thanks to its location a bit out of the center.

Alex, I like Tokyo a lot but yet I would like to stay a little away from Tokyo and when I feel like hanging out in the busy Tokyo, I can simply take a train there. Can you introduce the best place to stay on the outskirts of Tokyo?

I'm interested to hear your take on what areas are best to live in terms of neighborhood charm and ease-of-living. The criteria in the video was what I wanted when I first moved to Tokyo but I quickly found I wanted something more low-key, away from the energy of the city. For example, I hear a lot of good things about Futakotamagawa since it has more space but is generally still up-and-coming. Personally I like Shinagawa, but more close to the water-side; you can find a lot of restaurants with comfort food for foreigners, and it still has a lot of space and water which is a welcome break. I liked Nakameguro previously but found a lot of spots there are rather expensive and trendy and not necessarily somewhere I would want to visit on the day-to-day. Loved the video! Looking forward to more

Connie, Melissa, I'd say the top outskirts would be :
      1 - Around Komazawa Park
      2 - Futako-Tamagawa
      3 - Den-en-Chofu
      4 - Musashi-Koyama (besides peak traffic)
      5 - Kyosumi
      6 - Shimo-Kitazawa
      7 - Jiyugoaka

Ebisu is amazing. I stay at the Westin on every business trip and would walk to work everyday in Roppongi. The Westin is literally right across the street from the beer museum. Great neighborhood

I've only just realised that all of my favourite houses/ places are in Japan, I might begin to try to afford a house there.

We lived in Yoyogi Uehara for a few years and liked it. If your kids go to AIJ (American School In Japan), it is one of the last bus stops before the highway to AIJ so pretty convenient for the kids too.

    How is Harajuku, by itself?
Since this is an old video, I wonder if perceptions & other factors have changed in 2 years.
One big factor for me, coming from Canada, is snow. I would hate to see it chase me in Tokyo !
Are you also covering Osaka? I'm leaning towards this great city.
You're always doing a great job, Alex.
    Thanks

One time I met up with a friend who lives in Tokyo for dinner. The area he took me to was really nice and I thought to myself - if I was to live in Tokyo, this would be it. However I couldn't remember the name of the area. NOW I know! It's Nakameguro! No wonder! And the funniest thing is, the restaurant he took me to is the exact Mexican restaurant in the video 😄

I lived in Aoyama the first time I lived in Tokyo in 1992. I lived in a gaijin house and paid 70,000 yen / month for a 4 mat (jo) room and shared dining and bathroom. I had no idea how prestigious it was at the time, but every time I told people where I lived, they would say "wow". I also live in Yoyogi for a number of years. Most of your places that you mention are where rich foreigners would live if they were sent to Japan by their company. I would say that naka-meguro may be cheap, but you don't get many high end places. Most places are pretty small.
Throughout the time I lived in Japan, I would often try to escape to live in more out of the way places like Ochanomizu, Shinagawa and Kachidoki.
