    As an architectural student, I REALLY like the approach you and the architects took. It is still very fonctionnal like the modern japanese housing yet it keeps the beauty, the scenographic journey in which you discover as a visitor or the owner. I think you chose a firm that has a lot of concerns in creating comfortable houses for families, and the results are outstanding!

    Hey Dogen, I am studying architecture in Germany, and one complicated question we always face is, how to insulate the building walls depending on their thickness and material. In your case, the kitchen wall to the inner garden has two layers of paper walls and two layers of windows. Extend these outside, and two spaces within the wall appear. What did the architect do to avoid energy (heath) loss at this particular wall? Especially when it's cold outside, moisture can appear at these places if not insulated properly. Can you tell us about the walls structure and maybe how the architect solves this problem?
    It's a technical question, yeah. Heh.

      Hi, I graduated architecture school and currently work as a designer.
      edit: looking at the video more closely, i think there's a 'wall' in between the screen doors and the glass doors and that's probably where they're mitigating that energy loss. It also seems to be the case when they do the courtyard shot and you can see the door wall protrudes from the exterior wall to fit the glass doors inside of it. The wall itself is unusually thick for these reasons (you can see at 10:29) .
      To answer your question: it's likely just a point of energy loss (as is with any sorts of large windows and openings). The wall is likely not insulated and is just covered with some layers of finish and sheathing. Pocket doors are usually used on interior walls for this reason (and many others including sound, build, hardware, etc.). A pocket door is more like the width of two doors, with the second 'door' opening covered under the finish wall. Moisture shouldn't be a problem if the building is properly sealed with WRB and SAF at the pocket. The inside pocket is likely also entirely finished and sealed with any rails that the doors need to slide in and out of. So if the contractor and architect has done their work properly, there should be no moisture penetrating through these openings. (if you're further interested in this you can google 'pocket door section/detail')

    • @A_d_e_k
      @A_d_e_k 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I had a seminar about that (also from Germany): basically japanese architecture always counts for some points to just lose a lot of heating energy.
      In this case the idea behind the big window in the kitchen, is that cooking itself is going to generate a lot of heat and that's why you won't have to care too much about that, especially because the kitchen (in contrary to what a lot of german houses have) is just the kitchen, without any other centralized room inside (like for example a living room directly attached to it), so you're not gonna stay there for a lot of time anyway.
      What actually feels really foreign to me, is the fact that they don't have specific wardrobes in their room and also the living room kinda doesn't exist (as an European I could never imagine that).

    i like the architecture, but damn the place seems so small with the rooms all being small as well. The only time it feels big and open is when you are in the kitchen/living room with the doors open to the courtyard. Maybe It's because I'm American and most of our houses are built to be more open with bigger rooms whereas Japanese houses aren't. If you kept the same architecture but made everything about 2x bigger, then the house would be perfect.

    • @mayne069
      @mayne069 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it perfectly frames the minimalism. I have a huge apartment too but it's filled with so much clutter that it distracts from the important stuff. I am not messy by any means but humans tend to put stuff into corners that are empty. I like the simplicity the house is able to give off. Especially when you're a creative you seem to be more inspired by clean, less cluttered areas than anything else (atleast for me as a video editor).

    I've never really thought about my own dream house before watching this video. I mean I come from a middle class background as it is but it used to be that every dream house I saw before was just so focused on the money and shine and lavishness that it completely pushed me away. "What's the most expensive thing we put here?", "What's the thing here that would take the cool factor to eleven?" - None of these things felt like home to me. But this video is different. It's so well thought out that I could feel the soul and philosophy of the owner and the designer at every inch of the house, even through a screen. All those windows that I first thought were weirdly sized and placed all click into place once you consider yourself "in the moment" as then they would greatly enhance the experience of being there. Dogen's video has finally got me thinking about a house of my own. Every place he showed like the family closet, I could see why he made it that way and how our different ways of thinking would shape the place. It's such an incredible feeling and so inspirational that I've never felt it before. Thank you, Dogen. You and your family deserve all the happiness in the world.
