GPD's market share in handheld PC is getting smaller due to the rise of Steamdeck and major manufacturers' effort like ROG Ally or Legion Go so they decided to create this insanity. This might be a niche device but I love when manufacturers just have all the resources to create the most insane design PC that actually worked
I'd much rather have my Win Max 2 over a Steam Deck. The Steam Deck and its imitators are compromised to the point of making no sense. I will never understand the appeal vs. the WM2.
The steamdeck is an impressive piece of hardware at a very attractive price, but it comes with a lot of drawbacks. It's not really portable unless you put it in a dedicated case to protect the screen and sticks, so it enables you to play games lying on the couch instead of sitting at your desk but that's not really a game changer. The various imitators from rog and lenovo and such have all the same drawbacks, but with a heftier price tag and less comfortable control layout, so I don't get the point. Something like the GPD Mini fills a niche nobody else does, a full computer that will *literally* fit in your pocket, and it's even lighter than any of the other handheld PCs. But I do definitely like seeing GPD branch out into machines for engineers and designers and such in addition to just gaming. It seems like almost nobody who makes computers gets creative with it these days; they make a laptop that looks exactly like it did ten years ago, and the media treats a 14-inch screen instead of 13 or 15 like it's a revolutionary thing. GPD engineers are making things nobody else is making, and it's a gamble to be sure but it also means they have almost no competition for their (very limited) target market.
Those are gaming handhelds first, this is a productivity monster on the go. I do see this as a must have for digital nomads, who also does play to time in an all-in-one package.

I know, I am way behind. You'll have a very compressive review on the GPD DUO in about a week or so. I'll be comparing 780m and 890m (and I also hope to be undervolting in the review as well. Just a ton to cover really)
Personally for me, I would love a full sized 16" version - imagine dual 4k OLED screens (there is a 4k 90Hz 16.3" OLED out). That version could be a full workstation that you could take on the go (it would be as thick as a gaming laptop or workstation) with 2 screens. A larger form factor would allow for other things such as better speakers.
As someone who's been rocking the GPD WIN 4 8840U, I thought I had seen it all. But the GPD Duo? This thing makes my WIN 4 look like a toy! I mean, dual OLED screens, a 4090 running through oculink, and PCIe slots for days? It's like someone at GPD said, "What if we took a desktop workstation, crammed it into a laptop, and gave it features no sane person would ever need?" And I *love* it. The WIN 4 was already pushing the boundaries, but the Duo takes it to an entirely different universe. I used to think having a pocket powerhouse was enough, but now I’m looking at this insane, dual-screen, battery-conserving monster, and my WIN 4 feels like a warm-up lap. If you’re the kind of person who loves tech overload-and I mean *loves* it-this is the machine for you. It’s not just a laptop; it’s the tech lover’s dream come to life.
It has multiple full length m.2 slots, so dual-booting should be easier than on most laptops, but I do worry about how smoothly the dual-screen controls will work...
i just received my duo and so far linux i don't think is going to be a great experience which is a big let down for me. The screen seems to be oriented upside down in its default orientation i'm basing this on the fact booting ventoy and memtest86 is displaying upside down. I'm also noticing that the trackpad does not work in memtest86 as well as the function buttons like display brightness and turning on and off the extra display. This seems to indicate that there is drivers needed to speak to whatever is controlling these functions vs just being purely hardware.

He just needs to dual boot LMDE or Debian or Fedora on an external ssd & dual boot to check, should be OK probably 80% for multi screen, worried about other hardware drivers though
@5:25 Oh wow it can be Undervolted, now THAT is awesome. There's a reason every modern smartphone is at least 90, usually 120Hz.
@sindrisuncatcher653 indeed, but this is the first one for them, and as you know, companies are not willing to give you everything so that they can "keep giving customers" something new for their next one. I would've loved at least 120hz on a nice 1440p oled screen that can hit at least 1,000 nits.

@@nickthaskater it's comparable to the R7 7700X/7745HX in benchmarks and even then, the L3 cache is reduced in both the Z5 and Z5C cores compared to desktop Zen so it's easier to bottleneck when multitasking with a desktop 4090. It's a small CPU.

let me get this again. The second display can act as own separate display for any other PC/tablet/whatever? the connection is USB-C and you get touch input? this makes me want one of these.
If your gpd product arrive with issues or develop issue within the warranty period, do you have to pay for shipping back to china from your own pocket for the RMA?
That's incredibly impressive. But if GPD didn't upgrade their pen tech from the capacitive touch screen, we don't expect much on that front. We won't need any tests if that's the case. And yes digital artists will always be asking you gamers and PC nerds about this stuff!
Which model of oculink dock did you use ? BTW given GPD's history with their previous laptops, it baffles me that despite all these BIOS features they could take the time to test and include in the Duo, and despite that an indiegogo campaign allows them to plan in advance the exact amount of sold units that should be built, they surely won't give any option to replace the qwerty keyboard by an azerty one.
It's hard finding what the price these sell for sale, he only suggestion I have, they should do this LPcamm2 Graham for upgradability, thinner and faster than soldered ram at 9600
What pen protocol does it use?, when do we get prices?, Usually I dont like at these brands but honestly no company is making these form factors with up to date specs
Call me crazy but this actually seems like a pretty good deal? The Dell XP13 9340 I just got at my new job costs 400€ more with a 13" 1080P IPS, absolutely no ports....and the worst keyboard I've used on a laptop so far. ...Although I'd be missing the really sweet glass handrest with the trackpad, thats the only _great_ thing about this machine, and I wish everyone had it.
How does this balance on a desk,if the screens aren't straight up? It doesn't look like there's a way to reach a comfortable angle without it falling back.
If this thing had 120hz displays it would be damn near perfect. Honestly this with 120hz LTPO displays and Lunar Lake would be the dream machine for anything on the go.
@@fooboomoo lunar lake is obviously more efficient, however it wouldn't be able to support the OcuLink eGPU provided in this laptop and more (2.5gbps lan port, 32gb also max) the AI 370 chip is the best available right now for the features this laptop has
@@fooboomoo Faster and more efficient at higher power sure but something like this with Lunar Lake could get plenty of work done and have way better battery life than any Strix based machine.
If that's possible on here, I'm guessing you probably still couldn't pass the screen through from the dGPU to the iGPU in that configuration, but if it allows using one screen with the video input and the other with the iGPU, you could plug a video cable from the dGPU to the video input for that configuration.
It seems good but real case scenario is not suitable for most people. For portable, it is too heavy. If you mostly put it on a desk, you can easily find a second monitor or many other devices to improve using experience. The price is too high, compare to other light weight/gaming laptop the price/performance ratio is low. Touch screen is nice but it is not a deal breaker, otherwise windows surface sales will not been unsatisfactory. Nowadays an all round but high price product is only good on paper.
@@barneyfromblueshift They've stood by their recent offerings very well. The Win Max 2 has been around for more than 2 years and has seen 3 revisions and ongoing software/BIOS support. It's also not anything close to what I'd consider "expensive" for what you get.

How big is your pocket? GPD Win4 could fit in mine if I took it out of its grips (and you could spec it with a 5G modem and SIM).
The Win Mini is pretty close to that, unless you mean an actual phone like the Planet Computers Communicator.
That's incredibly impressive. But if GPD didn't upgrade their pen tech from the capacitive touch screen, we don't expect much on that front. We won't need any tests if that's the case.
And yes digital artists will always be asking you gamers and PC nerds about this stuff!
How loud are the fans? I have the Win Max 2 (6800u) and the fans are pretty loud under any load. Also any word on Linux support for the second screen?
Thanks for showing the camera. Trying to see if this works well for Zoom. What height is the camera at with 2 screens open?
Can you use the top display as a monitor with the laptop itself being off?
linux video pls with undervolt and power optimezed settings, need to know the battery life of the device
You video is so good made
can you connect the nintendo switch over the usb-c in the AMOLED2 screen or dock/HDMI only?
I believe you can, but will explicitly test it
Which model of oculink dock did you use ?
BTW given GPD's history with their previous laptops, it baffles me that despite all these BIOS features they could take the time to test and include in the Duo, and despite that an indiegogo campaign allows them to plan in advance the exact amount of sold units that should be built, they surely won't give any option to replace the qwerty keyboard by an azerty one.
The oculink egpu solution I've been using is the osmeta one from China. Been using it for a year. It's been a champ
Waiting for the Uno version 😂. That would absolutely rock.
lol haha. Yea somethings in the pipeline
Do you do any Linux review gaming on Gpd?
It's hard finding what the price these sell for sale, he only suggestion I have, they should do this LPcamm2 Graham for upgradability, thinner and faster than soldered ram at 9600
The video has dropped!!1 🙌
waiting for the full review of this monster
finally a laptop for composing
GPD just brought the boy out in The Phawx! 🤣
The Duo really is too much fun haha
@ThePhawx I have the Asus Zenbook Duo 2024. I'd love to see a comparison. Not easy to get hold of both I guess!
@@ThePhawx It sure looks it. I just wish it was dual 14" 120hz displays then I'd sell my Asus Zenbook Duo 2024 lol!
I regret buying the WM2 now 😂😭 (literally got mine 2.5 weeks ago).
I would love this thing for character design and animation.
But the price +~50%?
WM2 is 3" smaller and has an integrated gamepad. Totally different products.
@@nickthaskater yeah, but I’ve mostly been using mine for work; The gaming aspect is secondary, but nice to have.
Ya’ll are right. I’m happy with my purchase.
For a second there I thought I heard you say "the hawk tuah version" @2:04
What pen protocol does it use?, when do we get prices?, Usually I dont like at these brands but honestly no company is making these form factors with up to date specs
The same protocol as the surface pro, you can use the same pens. Preorder, price & and shipment dates are up NOW on GPD store.
@@UTsquid which surface pro, is it MPP 2.0 or 2.6 that's my specific question, thanks in advance.
Looking forward to the Strix Halo Win Max version 🎉
Sorry to miss it but How you connect to 4090?
OneXPlayer would snap a telescopic controller on that thing and call it a handheld.
I never understood why notebooks don't allow for video-in so that you could hook up a Steam Deck and dipslay it on the larger screen.
Such a memeable review. Oled goodness basking on my face😂😂
Hope someday will come gpd win mini on snapdragon with full day battery
can you try to do any Hip rendering with blender? what's the performance?
How does this balance on a desk,if the screens aren't straight up? It doesn't look like there's a way to reach a comfortable angle without it falling back.
If this thing had 120hz displays it would be damn near perfect. Honestly this with 120hz LTPO displays and Lunar Lake would be the dream machine for anything on the go.
do not forget 60 Hz oled looks better than my 100 Hz VA in motion (trust me I use them side by side right now daily)
Without Adaptive sync, still bad..
Why Lunar Lake? Strix Point is faster and more efficient
The Devs dream laptop 😍
any devs see this gonna make them buy this too😂
I foresee issues with the hinges in half a year to a year
I'm still holding out for the GPD Pocket 4
They should call it the GPD "But wait! There's more!"
Does it have a good iommu config? Can you set up a vm to run windows with dgpu passthrough on one screen, and your host os with igpu on the other? :D
If that's possible on here, I'm guessing you probably still couldn't pass the screen through from the dGPU to the iGPU in that configuration, but if it allows using one screen with the video input and the other with the iGPU, you could plug a video cable from the dGPU to the video input for that configuration.
I'm curious how this will stack up against the similar 2024 Asus Zenbook Duo with its detachable keyboard/trackpad.
This is the GPD story all day long.
Weird, cool, super expensive mashups of ideas that get sunset within 2 years.
@@barneyfromblueshift They've stood by their recent offerings very well. The Win Max 2 has been around for more than 2 years and has seen 3 revisions and ongoing software/BIOS support. It's also not anything close to what I'd consider "expensive" for what you get.
@@nickthaskater 3 revisions in 2 years is exactly the kind of thing I mean.
@@barneyfromblueshift "sunsetting" implies that they're no longer supported. All of the WM2 revisions are actively supported.
Updating the chipset of models is commonplace in PCs. Literally every manufacturer does it.
I had a home made version of this for a while, and for spreadsheets it actually was really good. Issue is price - old Thinkpad and secondary monitor, might scratch $300. This I'm thinking $3000.
how many screens do you need?
This.
GPD is breaking away from the competition
when one device advertised to do multiple things usually its a trap
well its not advertised as a gaming machine, hence no VRR and the panels are 60hz, but with an oculink egpu it can definitely fill that role on a desk.
