The Doctor stepping out of the smoking TARDIS with a little cough is an underplayed but brilliantly funny bit.
I've already seen Twin Dilemma (skipped ahead after Planet of the Spiders) and I'm midway through season 20 now and I reckon I'll rewatch it right after I finish Caves of Androzani, to get a real sense of the bitter disappointment that audiences would've felt. I was fortunate enough to have Jubilee be my first Sixth Doctor story.
That part may have been underplayed, but Pertwee certainly made up for it with the gurning later-on in the same story :)
"Doctor! You've changed again!"
"OH NO, NOT AGAIN!"
"No, not your appearance, your outfit."
Possibly not an exact quote but this exchange between the brigadier and the fourth Doctor cracks me up every time I watch it.
Great video! Can't wait for Part 2, my favourite opener has to be Power of the Daleks but Spearhead from Space and Robot are right behind
Gotta agree with that. Power has such great atmosphere and the other two are really fun romps.
@@TBowenMedia Thanks for the reply, Keep up the great work!
I love An Unearthly Child, for me, it is the best introduction of The Doctor followed by Spearhead from Space
"Doctor what happened?"
"Change, my dear. And it appears not a moment too soon."
Colin Baker wasn't ny favorite Doctor but i love that introduction
That was an excellent line. Too bad the next story didn't stick the landing but to be fair, Colin Baker himself stole every single scene he was in.
This is an criminally underrated channel. Another banger video, will be looking forward to part two.
Thank you very much. That means a lot to hear. The next part is in the scripting stages at the moment but will aim to have it out asap.
Couldn’t agree more
Fake fan? Bruh; you’ve got more passion for Doctor WHO than many have in general. You’re a true soul er fan a true fan.
Heartnell and matt smith have the best 1st episodes for me
Pertwee and Smith both had bangers
The 3rd Doctor 🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
My favourite one is Capaldi's story but I think in many ways, Pertwee's story is very similar
I was at the same scarborough panel! Was absolutely amazing, and it made Colin Baker instantly one of my favorite doctors, his audios are amazing!
Had a great time at that con. Me and my sister got the photo shoot with all four Doctors; definitely a magic moment
Tom Baker has the best introduction. Not because he had the best first episode story, which he didn’t, but because his winning charisma, charm and rightness for the role were immediately evident. He won you over as the Doctor within 5-minutes. All of the other new Doctors took a number of episodes before you warmed to them. The next shortest time was probably David Tenant, who took until his 2nd episode for me.
I agree. Although I thought Jon Pertwee had the better overall debut story Tom pretty much nailed it as soon as put his scarf on.
Shame that every quality you listed, all fizzled out and vanished over the next few years and by the time of season 16, the once great Tom was a miserable, nasty lead who inserted the most cringe worthy 'gags' when not even warranted, broke the fourth wall, shushed anyone who had lines in his vicinity when they started to deliver them and looked like he hadn't slept or washed in a decade.
@@rnw2739I agree with all that. Worst thing the BBC did was replace the brilliant Phillip Hinchcliffe as producer and replace him with the inferior Graham Williams who didn’t have the same rapport that Tom and Philip had or the creativity.
@@rnw2739Most, if not all, of which would have taken place off screen, and so, be of no concern to viewers.
Despite the show becoming tiresome (his episodes were hardly the most creative) for Tom after a SEVEN year run, even then, at his worst, Baker still was a more convincing, and a more entertaining Doctor than the next three regenerations at their best. Davidson, Colin Baker and McCoy.
4 and 11 both got me in the first 5 minutes, all the other Doctors took a little longer haha!
The Twin Dilemma is an underrated legand of an episode 11/10 easy, hilarious and incredibly fun
Matt Smith for me.
I actually like The Twin Dilemma. Seeing Colin Baker's Doctor coping with the effect the Spectrox Toxaemia had on the regeneration (though not specified in the story, but how I rationalise it). It's a silly story, though I like the story of the twins and Azmael, but it still captured my imagination.
But, I also LOVED the Star Trek Voyager episode Threshold, so take all this with a grain of salt.
Second Doctor for me; The Power of the Daleks. Straight in there with a Dalek story, and there seems to have been a genuine effort during Troughton's era to do something more interesting with the Daleks. And because it was the first regeneration, they really made the most of it with the companions initially thinking The Doctor had been replaced by some play-acting alien intruder (as you would) and only gradually coming around to accepting that it's still him.
I think it's very hard to pick between 2, 3 and 4. But on balance I reckon Pat Troughton has to get top slot simply since he pioneered the entire process.
Great video, id love to see the reverse of this. Having a look through the regeneration stories for each doctor
Will definitely consider that in the future!
Colin Baker's had to be the worst considering he wasn't even in it! Just McCoy laying on the floor facing the wall as if he broke his neck
Spearhead>Unearthly>Power>Tv Movie>Robot>>>>>>Rani>Twin>Castrovalva
I love to hate Twin and Rani, but Castrovalva as a story makes me feel weird and also puts me to sleep. But! The Fifth Doctor himself's introduction is better than 6 and 7, granted.
Yeah, Sylvester wasn’t bad as a Chaplin-esq pantomime act, but the fans and new viewers needed something *_more_* to keep people watching. Especially once it started to go against Soap Opera staple Coronation Street in its same time slot. The Seventh Doctor’s reinvention as a darker Machiavellian planner was super necessary to keep the show alive.
The wonderful Colin Baker, pirouetting in the console room in his predecessors muddy outfit, full of beans
and delighted to show Peri what am improvement has taken place!!
Brilliant video!! For the classic era I'm stuck between spearhead from space and power of the daleks, both bloody brilliant. Also W Peep show
Had to get some Peep Show gags in there. My favourite comedy!
@@TBowenMedia me too brother, me too. I’ve rewatched it an absurd amount of times.
Loved the video. Excited fir part 2
the clothes changing when 1 regenerates into 2 is fine since it was the first regeneration and they obviously didn't have it set in stone as to how regeneration works
Tom baker was the doctor ....he got the eccentricity just right...
Excellent video!
I feel with how Doctor Who has evolved it may be time for a look at other time lords. I recently watched the third and fourth doctor's "Pyramids of Mars" and "The Three Doctors". So many more stories can be told from all the other time lords. Maybe a "Time Lords" spinoff could be a thing.
I figured I might mention this. The internet archive has most of classic Doctor Who for free, including an unearthly child.
Oh wow! I just looked into that and sure enough, it's up there. Crazy the things you can find on Internet Archive.
I know this is a part 1 but I think I'll list my rankings of introductory episodes in all of who (worst to best)
The Twin Dilemma
Time and the Rani (which is a shame as McCoy is one of my favourite Doctors)
Castrovalva
The Christmas Invasion
The Church on Ruby Road
The Star Beast
The Power of the Daleks
The Women Who Fell To Earth
Deep Breath
Robot
The Unearthly Child
TV Movie
Spearhead from Space (I am biased towards Pertwee)
Rose
The Eleventh Hour (it's just the best)
I tried not to think about it too much so this was more based on vibes than analytical critique
Great video.
Excellent video! You just gained a new subscriber! You deserve far more viewers and subscribers! Can’t wait to see the next part!❤️👍🏾
Aww, thank you. Glad you liked what you saw.
The Doctor seems to never have a non-Traumatic regeneration in the classic series. Troughton's story downplays it, but it's still there.
They play into the strangeness of the process a lot more although the Fourth Doctor seemed pretty put together in Robot. He carries on pretty much as usual after picking his costume.
@@TBowenMedia yes, he had the least traumatic regeneration of the lot. Maybe it was his Time Lord buddhist monk friend giving him that little push.
Easily Troughton, Power of the Daleks is my favourite Dalek story. I think it's better than Genesis and Master Plan (controversial ik).
I finished the total Who watch thru from Hartnell to Whittaker a couple months ago. Took about ~2 years of on and off viewing, including the missing episode reconstructions/animations which were sometimes a challenge to get through.
I started the marathon in April 2011 and managed to finish a couple of weeks before the 50th anniversary special.
There were only something like three (partially) animated stories so I filled the gaps with Loose Canon recons and BBC Audio CDs. The only stories I skipped were The Ice Warriors because the DVD was two years in the future and the VHS and CD editions out of print and expensive, Dimensions In Time and Scream of the Shalka because they were Impossible to find.
@@UranusMcVitieFish-yd7oq Yeah, I didn’t count Shalka and Dimensions in my watch thrus, but I moved hell and earth to import a copy of the 97 movie in America. I want to say Hartnell took up Feb 2021 - Oct 21, Troughton Oct 21 - Jan 22, Pertwee Jan 22 - Fall 22, Baker took a while and from there it gets fuzzy, I want to say I finished him in Summer 23 because by then I was getting antsy about getting done for the 60th. I marked Oct 8 for when I finished the Classic series, and each doctor of the modern series took about a month. I know I finished Capaldi on NYE 2023 and I was done with Whittaker by February. So actually 3 years of my life on this silly show I adore. I applaud people that can squeeze it all in that quick, I got burned out a few times and would pause and watch another show.
Jon Pertwee
Tom Baker was the wild eyed loner staring at the gates of oblivion.. This was my era..
i think a great entry point for doctor who is either starting with series 1 rose with nine or season 1/series 14 the church on ruby road with 15
simply because they are both introducing a new doctor but its not a post regeneration story
This is a great question ..although the story was terrible ..I would say Colin Baker ..the first half of episode one of the twin dilemma is phenomenal..we get to see what a Grear dr could have been ..sadly just like now and inparticuslry Jodie's tenure..bad writing let's it's down
But I love eighth tho
Troughton had the best introductory story, with Hartnell a close second, and Tom Baker coming in third.
Assuming that the Colin Baker in the thumbnail is memeing! Love sixie but what a horrid début.
Spearhead for me.
You sure you're not buzz from home alone one and two
I know this isn’t a big deal or anything but you forgot to add the 00:00 time stamp so the chapters don’t work
I've not met Ncuti Gatwa. He told me not to watch so I didn't bother. Looks like millions of other fans also did the same.
Feck off then. He's awesome
who told you not to watch?
@@popularcharacterholly Ncuti said ONLY to people who didn't agree with his caasting (racists, I guess): “Don’t watch. Turn off the TV. Go and touch grass, please, for God’s sake.”
@@alanrockunited i mean, there aren't many other reasons to disagree with his casting if you haven't seen any of him as the doctor. i cant imagine saying publicly 'i was told not to watch this if i was racist, so naturally i didn't watch it'.
@@alanrockunitedfind me the actual article or video where he actually said this and maybe we can talk.
Pertwee. End.
Lot's of shows have tried replacing their main character, sometimes through something almost exactly like regeneration, but only DW has succeeded with it. The "14th Doctor" is just the 10th Doctor in every single way, why are we pretending they are different incarnations? While we are about it, why are we pretending that the two shows are the same show? They are as different as TNG is from the original Star Trek.
DW is the best show ever made, so if you can start watching other programmes from the start, why not DW? If the beginning of DW turns new viewers off, good riddance. Twin Dilemma was not badly received, otherwise the viewing figures would reflect that, fans just like revising history after being heavily influenced by Michael Grade's & Eric Saward's criticisms. Time & the Rani is a feast for the eyes & ears, if it's boring then everything is.
mine
Power (Great)
Spearhead (Great)
Unearthly (Great)
Rose (Pretty good)

Eleventh (good)
TV Movie (yeah, I actually like it)
Deep Breath (ok)
Castrovalva (ok)
Christmas (ok)
Starbeast (mid)

Woman Who Fell to Earth (meh)
Twin Dilemma (second worst)
Time and the Rani (The absolute worst episode)
Absolute worst episode? You've not seen the worst of Jodie or Ncuti have you? Mind you I've not seen any Ncuti either.
@@UranusMcVitieFish-yd7oqwhy did you say that then? youre just assuming it's bad based on nothing?
Here is how I would fix the Jodie Whittaker and Gatwa Doctor messes. The 4th Doctor (T Baker) is being shown from the back looking at his console and looking at some of these episodes and shaking his head. He then says "No... This will not do. This timeline split has gone sideways and its endangering my existense and all future doctors". Then he fiddles with controls and its all erased and replaced with a new timeline where the Capaldi Doctor is regenerated into a teenager brainy doctor kid much like Adric or even Nissa. Then this nightmare can be put to rest as a bad terrible timeline by some unknown force that controls the Cybermen. New Monster threat are Draconian Lizards running from an even more terrible souless AI who threatens the Universe.
'Bigoted individual' - you mean someone you dont agree with?
Stef Coburn frequently tweets and retweets antisemetic, anti-vaccine conspiracies and called the casting of a black man as the Doctor the result of “corrupted BBC filth”.
@@TBowenMediain an ideal world people like that would be left behind by natural selection
@@TBowenMediaHe had a tough childhood. It might not excuse but it sure does explain. When his dad wasn't busy at the typewriter cobbling together 'An Unearthly Child', he was preaching the Bible and beating the crap out Stef.
The casting of Ncuti had everything to do with his skin colour and sexual preferences and nothing to do with his "talent" (there are so many talented black actors in the UK so why that annoying ponce?) so yes, I'd say his casting has everything to do with degenerate woke BBC filth (see also the character Rose Noble (nothing weird or creepy going on there, I mean it's not as if the BBC hasn't had any problems with paedophilia or child safe guarding in the past has it?)
@TBowenMedia So what, in your opinion, was the reason for the casting of a black, gay man if it isn't BBC agenda pushing? I think you'll find it is and the deserting audience is nothing to do with people who dislike black people ir homosexuals before you sling that pathetic label about - it is simply resentment of being preached too by the BBC.
But a microphone and learn how to focus a camera.
I don’t hear any issues with the audio personality
Here’s the thing. This was my first time trying my new camera and I was disappointed by the video quality but will try to get a clearer image for my next video. I do have a microphone which I used for the voice over segments.
So the count-up on the different Doctors was SPOT ON and the "grumbeling audience" just expected a more glossy execution. Best praise for any beginner, ever! Carry on to amaze the fandom with your sound insights👍😎💕
