BECOMING KLARUS - How I Became a Doctor Who Monster | Tom Bowen
I remember my first ever doctor who story was 42. My mom thought Doctor Who was Doctor Strange so she put it on for me. I fell in love with the show the more I watched it and to this day i still love it
Is The Movie Good? No. Is it goofy and silly and fun and something i watch 3 times a week? Yes. I have a soft spot for Paul McGann and I Think He carried the Movie (Not that everyone else did badly) and he was an amazing doctor. If they were to bring him back I dont think it should be something like 14th where he is back for a new regeneration for an anniversary special but more along the lines of the current doctor crossing paths with 8th accidentally and there is a 2 parter.
My ranking of the revivial era first stories from best to worst: 1. The Eleventh Hour 2. Deep Breath 3. Rose 4. The Church on Ruby Rad 5. The Woman Who Fell to Earth 6. The Christmas Invasion 7. The Star Beast
Well since you asked at the end of the video, here are my thoughts on the Doctor debut stories: An Unearthly Child: Definitely peaks early but that first episode is fantastic and the character dynamics carry the caveman stuff. Hartnell is great from the start. The Power of the Daleks: My favourite Dalek story. It's creepy, expertly written and it does an excellent job introducing the concept of regeneration. Spearhead from Space: This is my favourite Doctor debut story. It's simple but well-paced and it gets the job done perfectly. The Autons are scary, Jon Pertwee is delightful and it's cool to see a Doctor Who story that uses locations for every scene. I think it's the only story that did that. Robot: Tom Baker shines from the start and effortlessly slips into the role. The story is solid too if a little corny and the use of UNIT, while out of place for this Doctor, was a good way of easing older fans into this new era. Castrovalva: I agree, it's a vibe. It's a shame the Doctor's asleep for half of it and I wish they didn't go with the 'two stories in one' plot but once we get to Castrovalva, it's a lot of fun. Points for the best Master disguise btw! I genuinely didn't see that coming. The Twin Dilemma: Trash! This is my least favourite Doctor Who story of all time (I know, I'm basic!). It's not only boring and garish but it's also unpleasant with a very unlikeable Doctor and few likeable characters in general. Time and the Rani: Also trash but for the opposite reason. This is way too camp and awkwardly written and while there's fun to be had, I think they took it too far. Plus, Sylvester's Doctor, as much as he's trying, did NOT come fully formed. The TV Movie: It's one of my guilty pleasures. Paul McGann is a delight and it's a crime we didn't get more of him onscreen. It looks fantastic (dodgy 90s effects aside), I liked Grace and I have a soft spot for Eric Roberts' over-the-top performance. I do agree that it's frontloaded with lore stuff and a bit too confusing and weird at times but it's a fun romp. Plus, that TARDIS is amazing! Shame it never got used again. Rose: Well... it got me into Doctor Who so it did something right! It's a bit dated now but it's such an effective introduction to Eccleston and Rose, as well as Doctor Who in general, that it should be taught in film schools and writing classes. The Christmas Invasion: It's an enjoyable enough Christmas special with a fun first act and an excellent final act but I think the Doctor is out of action for way too long which drags the pacing down. We did not get enough Tennant. It's a shame because when he does show up, he's amazing (albeit not yet fully formed). The Eleventh Hour: This is just magical. Series 5 was unlike any other season of Doctor Who and this episode not only effectively introduce Matt Smith, Amy Pond and the new era but it was an excellent story in its own right. Steven Moffat played to win here! Deep Breath: It's a fun industrial horror story that Capaldi owns... once it actually gets going. It did not need to be 75 minutes though! Still, from the restaurant onwards, it's a good time! Also I'm shocked they got away with as much body horror as they did! The Woman Who Fell to Earth: This establishes the tone of the new era perfectly, beautifully blending the ordinary with the alien. The companions are decently introduced and the story is simple but effective. I do feel like Jodie Whittaker never quite gelled with her characterization and the villain is really boring but it's still a decent time and very underrated. The Star Beast: It's a decent enough anniversary special and solid adaptation of the comic with some impressive set pieces and effects that show off the new budget. However, this is very series 4 adjacent rather than a new start to Doctor Who and the structure and handling of trans themes is very clumsy. The Church on Ruby Road: This effectively introduces Ncuti's Doctor and Ruby. And that's it. I didn't rate the story that much because it didn't feel like there was much of one but the Goblins are fun, it looks great and the leads absolutely carry it.
@@joelmole3157 Really enjoyed reading through these, looks like we have similar taste although I definitely have more of a soft spot for Ncuti’s debut. Never noticed how almost all of Spearhead from Space is location filming. Definitely gives the episode a bigger, bolder look than the rest of the era.
A wise man once said don't judge a book by its cover, over the 61 years ago a little old man and his granddaughter began to run. Now people ask who this person why does he call himself The Doctor, who knows but the reason a mystery in his own timelines. The story could be simple but utterly impossible at the same time. Such are the rules of time, but if you imagine a world where time is part of The Doctor's origins, he or they are not that easy to make sense. They The Doctor's have wore different faces but a question nobody asks in which order. 1 to 15 and not forgetting the War Doctor or faces that could be unknown mysterious. We know 12 regenerations are the maximum, but here's a thing a time lord can mimic identities of others by altering they faces. So, is the first doctor truly the very beginning on Earth? How long had he been on Earth prior? What decade did he first come to Earth, but considering his method of travel, he could appear centuries earlier. He and Susan. Once upon a time, the travelling machine circled Earth an old man from the world of Gallifrey. Did he come. With a wish interfere, but a whisper in his ear told him to have some fun, and he a his granddaughter Susan stayed a the Earth was never the same while the doctor stayed a while to long, but wh told him to stay? Maybe a masterful plan?
It was really nice getting to revisit your debut story series all in one video. Keep up the great work!
@@nafanarefour4564 Cheers! Was happy to rework them for the big day.
Now do the actor's last stories
Also, just for those who don't know, Feige rejected almost every single story idea from Reynolds, so instead, Reynolds went to then Disney CEO Bob Chapek, who instantly approved of Reynolds' approach. By the time Iger "came back," the film was already too far into production to cancel, and Reynolds was previously given full control alongside Shawn Levy by Chapek, that Iger and Feige were forced to back off and let Reynolds, Levy, and Jackman do their thing.
Having Deep Breath be the same score as Time of the Rani is an utter joke lmao. Done DB way too dirty, TotR is gutter trash. You were way too generous with Church which has gotten significantly worse knowing what is has led up to. Dead on with mostly everything else though.
Facts.
I’m quite surprised by the lack of doctor who content today given it’s the anniversary. This is the first one I’ve seen all day
