Listening to this live take makes me believe this is the best rock and roll song of all time.

I felt for the poor girl at the beginning :) This is the Jam I saw live in the Bricklayers Arms in the 70's - all aggression and spite. They were fabulous, in a room half the size of my house :)

That "poor" girl was completely endearing, and that may have been her 15 seconds of fame. Awesome track and awesome MC bo-peep.

She's commented on another video. Ian was lovely, as were the rest of The Jam. Paul was really rude. She was so nervous and was so apologetic for going through so many takes. @@willisarocknrollstar1167

They were refined & almost the complete animal by this time, in '77 they were national power grid electric.

I know mate. I was fortunate to see The Jam many times. Lucky to be born in 1962 and lived in West London during the 70s and early 80s. Only people who saw them actually live know how good they were. Videos like these can only be a pointer to how good they were. The audiences who watched them at proper live gigs went mental. I can still remember the atmosphere at gigs even today. It was really visceral!

@@mark6809mm that’s awesome mate! I’m from the States and really take my musical influences as a very young child until the present time starting with MY big 3 of the Kinks, the Stones and the Fu..ing Who! All incredible as Pete and Ray are true lyrical and musical geniuses. Also into the usual suspects during these teenage years and then the Jam!!! They became my band and like The Who before them were on another level live. Paul Weller is just total legend and I really appreciate and enjoyed the Style Council too! As I enlisted in the United States Army I became a huge Smiths fan! ( my teenage children and some of their friends also love the Smiths) the UK 🇬🇧 had many terrific bands during this era while we were very limited in the States during this time (musically) for example The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Stone Roses ~ Poison, Motley Crue Bon Jovi …. I could go on but I’m becoming nauseous lol. Then moving into the 90s with Britpop and …. Another life changer…. For me anyhow The Libertines!!! Britpop 2! Pulp, Block Party and along with many others ( The Arctic Monkeys!) Anyhow …,just incredible! I’m 55 and I’m grateful, so so grateful! As music is so important to get through this life! My teenage children are thankful and my beautiful young girlfriend thanks all of you!!

@@mark6809mm I know they played Battesea Town Hall in 77 78 i saved up my saturday money to watch them at 12 yrs old. Only had a 2 min walk home too.. The sheer energy from 3 pieces matched only by motothead.. Years later and i mean many years 3 decades or so my kid brother worked in a comoany with Ricks wife.. I was so OTT when she (RIP), got him to sign my old LPs. Love the boys from woking...

I saw them at about this time at Redland College in Bristol and they were great. I was 19 and one of the oldest people in the audience. Don’t be so hard on the announcer - at that time, music on TV was rare and often on kids programmes. Full marks to Granada for letting the kids have a go

    • @raymon8044

I'm pretty sure the Marshall is just a stage prop, looks like he's using a peavey combo as it's the one amp that is mic'ed up and he's using it to let the guitar feedback near the end of the song.

I saw this programme live. These days rock goes out at half past going to bed and on some cable channel. Not then. This was a Monday night, Something Else at 6.30 pm, BBC2. I think it was the first time I'd heard it, I might be wrong but I don't think even John Peel had played it.
