1970s PSA - Most Important Person in The World to You - "I'm the Only Me!"

  • One of the interesting psychological theories which has popped up in the last few decades is that there is a cause and effect relationship between individualism and the depression epidemic. There was a college professor who wrote an editorial a few years back in which he blamed mister rogers for kids being increasingly narcissistic - the idea being that everybody can't be special, and telling people they are special who have done nothing to distinguish themselves actually reduces the chance of them doing anything to distinguish themselves. This particular series of PSAs came to mind straight away.

being you and may be the best version of you helps you and maybe Inspires others
There’s a difference between self neglect self-care and being selfish versus self-centered.

I don't remember the cartoon, but I do remember the filmed intro and the song. I'd forgotten it until I saw it and then - WHAM! - 1970s TV flashback!
As a kid, I thought this was about kids on TV, not real kids. And I knew that the PSA was always the last commercial before the show came back on, so I was always glad when one came on because it meant soon the boring part was over and what I wanted to see would come back on.
Those PSAs were a total fail to me. I remember the Bear - Smokey (I wanted to call him 'Yogi') pointing and saying, 'Only YOU can prevent forest fires!' I used to look around hoping my parents weren't in the room because I was afraid they'd tell me to go and prevent a forest fire (AFTER I cleaned up my room, of course), and I didn't have any idea where the forest was or how you prevented a forest fire. Too much pressure on a kid...

OK, then, the hospital from the late 60s and 70s which don’t exist no more because today the hospital has long ago underwent several makeovers including the outside of the building because I remembered Children’s Hospital used to have a rotunda in the center of the building which had a McDonald’s restaurant inside of it which was later moved somewhere at the front entrance of the hospital but that’s now going now because I was a patient there back in the 70s during the time when the most important person cartoon short use the air on WKBS channel 48 when I was then a young boy.
