    Hi Brent! May i know what is long shutter exposure for? And how do you find it useful? Sorry, i'm newbie here..

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Long exposures can be useful for lots of things. Basically the longer your shutter speed, the more light you let in. So, it's very good for low light, night time, stars, light trails, and even during the day if you put a filter on then you can do long exposures to smooth out water and clouds, or make people disappear from an image and blur out passing cars. Lots of useful things. I have videos on doing all that stuff on my channel if you want to learn how to do it.

    One thing I noticed on my Galaxy S7 camera is that there is stutter in pro mode and not in auto mode when panning. The manual settings do not seem to be able to smooth this out. For video purposes, I have to choose between the pro features that I want, or a smooth pan. Perhaps they have fixed this in newer phones.

      Thanks Jeff, that's awesome about your light trail shots! That's definitely one of my favorite types of photography to do. Glad you liked the Snapseed tutorial, and I definitely agree with you about doing more in depth tutorials, it's tricky though, cause a lot of people give me grief for going too in depth (and say I talk too much, lol), so I have to find the balance, at least for TH-cam. I am working on possibly doing some super in depth stuff as paid downloadable content for those interested though, but that takes a lot of effort too. Thanks for watching, and for the comment!

    Brent i am between Samsung s9 plus and huawei p 20 pro and i like to have your oppinion about what do you prefer for photography. Huawei is 40 megapixel and 12 megapixel to s9 plus. I am amateur photographer

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know, I've never used the P 20 Pro, though I've heard good things about its camera, especially for night stuff since it has a 30 sec max shutter and something like 3200 max ISO, but other than that I've never really researched it since it's not something I could get my hands on. Overall, I'm quite happy with my Samsung, especially as a phone experience, not just the camera. There are definitely things I wish they would fix on it, like the max 10 sec shutter speed, and the max 800 ISO, but other than that, I'm quite happy with the camera on it, but it's also not my main camera either. Maybe you can find a place near you that has them on display or something so you can try them out?

But I have some issues with the picture profile. My s9 plus picture profile icon is available but not highlighted, meaning it is not active. Also the picture profile in the photo mode is active , but lacks the different option to select from except options to customise that can be controlled. I needed your help. Thanks.

  • @LifeinGlow
    @LifeinGlow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video but the mode itself only is ok for situations with steady lighting and static shots. By the time you tune up the exposure a moving subject would be far away. I've got the phone hoping to see apeture priority there. I wish they rather did semi-manual controls Av, Tv, and locking the ISO, with exposure compensation that would work for many situations.

    Brent, brilliant video, its certainly encouraged me to start experimenting with my Note 8. Have you had a chance to review the Moment Pro camera app at all? I believe this uses the Pixel core camera app and wondered if it gave as good results as the Samsung camera pro mode? Would really value your opinion on this app!

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Roy! I do have the moment app, but I haven't reviewed it. So far, at least for Android, I wouldn't use it over the Samsung pro mode. It just doesn't have as many options and controls yet. I've had a lot of people ask me for a review on it, but I just don't think it's ready to compete with the Samsung pro mode yet, so I've been waiting to see if they will add some improvements.

    is it possible to get a good hyperlapse of a sunset with the S9plus? If so, what settings would you use?
    Thank you!

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That depends on your definition of "good." Sunsets are hard because there's so much dynamic range, even with mirrorless and dslrs it can tricky to capture a good sunset. I usually use some sort of nd grad filters or do hdr, but you can't really do that with phones. You can capture it with the hyperlapse mode, but you'll likely have either really blown out highlights or completely dark and silhouetted foreground objects. There's also no exposure controls in the hyperlapse mode in the S9 plus, so you'll likely have to rely on it's auto features. If it's all you have though, I definitely wouldn't let any of that stop you from giving it a go. I do have a video about different ways of doing timelapses with phones as well, if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/D6IVWtroIrI/w-d-xo.html

      If you want to slow the shutter speed down enough to get smooth looking water, then yes, you will need ND filters for that during the day time. Or you can just wait until it gets darker out and do it without the filters. I did use filters for the shots in the video, but no external or 3rd party lenses.

    Hey thanks for this. So in pro mode (for photos) can you manually focus on something? And 1 more question..when i press the focus button i get those little square shapes like canon 80d .how do u use those to focus i dont get it:) thanks

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, in pro mode you can manually control the focus. Just click on the AF symbol and then you'll see the slider, where you can slide it to the focus point you want. The yellow boxes will flash over the areas of the image that are currently in focus. So when it's in auto focus, it'll look like they're going crazy because the camera is constantly auto focusing, and when you manually control the focus, you'll see the yellow boxes show up where it's currently in focus. Hopefully that helps?

    • @JohnAmaro_Official
      @JohnAmaro_Official 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrentHall when i change yo manual focus and slide the slider to focus it just blur the whole image for some reason

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you slide it toward the flower, then it will focus to it's closest focusing distance, and if there's nothing in that part of the image, up close to your lens, then the whole rest of the image will be out of focus. Same thing if you're focusing toward the mountain symbol (to infinity), then anything that's close to your lens will look out of focus, and if you're holding it close to something that's filling the frame and have it focusing toward infinity then it will also look like the whole image is out of focus.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would if I had a Pixel, but I don't have one and I don't know anyone who does. You could stack images using some free desktop software, like Deep Sky Stacker, or something. That will definitely help reduce noise and make a brighter, cleaner image. It takes a lot of extra effort though, and it still wouldn't give you dslr level quality, but it might be worth a shot.

    and lastly would you know the bit rate when shooting 4k video?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For creating your own custom presets, just tap on either of the custom tones (T1 and T2) and adjust the settings to what you want. Unfortunately you can only use those presets for video when filming in the the regualr 1080 (FHD) mode, they will not work in 4K or slow motion modes (which is beyond seriously lame). With the H.264 codec, the 4K @ 60fps are captured at 72Mbps bitrate, the 4K @ 30fps - 41Mbps, the 1080p @ 30fps - 13.3Mbps, and the 1080p @ 60fps - 27.5Mbps. The audio is always recorded in stereo at 256Kbps bitrate.

      No, it's for both. I definitely use it for video, pretty much every time, unless I'm shooting in slow motion, which is only in auto. Pro mode is great for video cause you can dial in everything yourself and don't have to worry about the phone changing settings while you're recording, and you can have your shutter speed set to the 180° rule. If you're serous about video on the phone, I definitely recommend shooting in pro mode.
