- In this video we explore a millipede species that is probably unknown even to most experienced pet millipede keepers. We talk a bit about them and I demonstrate how to make a nano tank for them.
Nano tanks are simply small tanks and this includes both aquatic and terrestrial applications. Nano tanks are an exploding sector of the hobby as many pet bug keepers are learning to enjoy creating micro-habitats with naturalistic combinations of forest or sometimes desert detritus that includes soil, bark, wood, leaves and other decaying organic matter. The bases covered, only one's imagination limits how grand a tank can be. I follow a TH-cam creator named SerpaDesign and his tanks always inspire me.

Almost more than our pets themselves, a tank that aims to balance form and function while drawing on nature as its inspiration is a spot sweeter than even Hamlet could have conceived of when counseled Horatio about the limits of his imagination. I would offer that sublimity in the human experience is the meeting point between nature and our own imaginations. Or, in the words of Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory:
Come with me
And you'll be
In a world of pure imagination
Take a look and you'll see
Into your imagination
We'll begin with a spin
Travelling in the world of my creation
What we'll see will defy explanation
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanna change the world?
There's nothing to it.
There is no life I know
To compare with pure imagination
Living there you'll be free
If you truly wish to be
Octoglena anura is a very unique looking millipede on account of its tiny head and disproportionately large antennae. They are in the oddball Polyzoniida order of millipedes. These millipedes are often found on the undersides or tucked into nooks in decaying logs but it seems they suck out the juices from algae and decaying leaves/vegetation. Perhaps they like less decayed leaves than other millipedes, since it is the juices they feed on. Just a hint of chlorophyll in the leaves may be advisable. There is precious little information on the husbandry of this unusual species at the time of my filming of this video, and I welcome the experiences of any other keepers of them.
Contest 4/10 to 4/15 is limited to residents of mainland USA, though anybody may comment on the video or answer the questions below. All participants must answer these three questions.
1. What is the first spring/summertime bug you saw in 2020?
2. Have you ever seen a millipede in the wild?
3. Would you prefer I do a Q&A video next week, or a dedicated species video like this one for next week?
