Hey! I've enjoyed you videos and insights for a long time. I was catching up on watching today and found this one on Storm Door Closers. We've lived in our house for 2 years and accepted that the front storm door was not going to close by itself. It has 2 closers attached. I didn't know there was the screw adjustments...???...!!!... On adjusting the screws, I noticed that there were no screws holding the top hinge. Added screws to tighten up the hinges and adjusted the screws on the hydraulics. WHAT? It works! I even adjusted it for the 6" stop and close. THANKS!
We have one of those on a storm door here and the wind has already caught that door and swung it out so hard that the rod in the closer gets bent. It's been changed out twice already, and the one on the door now is also bent. I've also installed a chain to limit the door's travel, this doesn't seem to have helped awful much. I hadn't thought about installing two of these on that particular door, though.
CHAIN IMPORTANT ! Stress Test it ! . & Just get an industrial strength single unit, like you see at stores or office buildings. Over powered yes Comfort peace of mind BOOM !
I've installed storm doors for many years but have been stumped by this one. It's a full view storm door and the only way that it closes tight in the winter (after the prime door is closed) is if I put 2 closers on it with the adjustment on 'strong'. Then my wife complains that it is too difficult to push open. On the other hand, our back storm door (self storing glass/screen) closes beautifully in the winter with the prime door closed with just one closer! I'm stumped.
Say you have a horizontal middle 8" piece of wood in your wood screen door, would it be better to install it there instead of the top of the door, or does it not matter?
Installed a closer like the one in your video for my storm door. All is OK except the door is a little hard to open all the way. It takes a little force. Will the adjustment screw on the cylinder alleviate the tough opening and if so will it slam shut once that's done.. Right now before I do an adjustment it closes perfectly w/o slamming. It's just a bit stiff to open past 45 degrees. Thanks for any advice.
Looked for your video on how to address the crack at the door where light shows through. Did a quick look at your videos and didn't see that. Did you post a video for that issue, and if so can you advise the title or provide a link? Thanks
What if my bracket is closer than a quarter inch? Will it make it difficult for the door to shut properly? Our new door won’t shut properly and I wonder if that is the reason?
Hey Jimmy, if you can only install one, I prefer top. It counteracts the pressure of people pushing the door open at chest height better. One down low will often cause the door to twist outward, but one on the top usually keeps it more plumb while opening. Less stress on the mounting hardware 🙂
My old mount pulled out of the jamb, is it ok to mount the brace a little further than 1/4" in order to avoid the old holes that the screws pulled out of?
David Kutas I’d say definitely take the old closer off first, then see if you can maybe reattach the damaged jamb part with construction adhesive like liquid nails. Then a whole new closer in the same spot, even attached through the same holes, should get it swinging again 🙂
I installed 3" screws so it goes straight through the jamb and into the studs. Also if you change out the screws on your door hinges with 3"screws, your doors will be much more secure against forced entry. Good luck my friend!
It depends on if your door/area is exposed to high winds. I've seen storm doors ripped off even with chains. Did keep it from blowing into other people's yards. I'm sure if you simply keep adding more and more chains it would be a good sight to see.
Hi Ethan, do you think you can use this contraption on a patio sliding door? I bought one of these and now realizing it’s designed for a regular style door.
The protector chains that limit the screen door over opening and ripping that holding bracket from the door jam IMPORTANT Next video how to replace door jam ripped open from cylinder being over tweaked too far back !!! NOT KEWEL !!!!

I have the exact same model closer as you, the instructions were not clear on where to install. This video helped me.
Any advice for say if the owner needs the Storm door to open a full 90° for wheelchair accessibility?
Just installed one as a precaution against the wind slamming the interior door when the garage door is open and it’s windy outside. Thank you.

Excellent job man!!!

On a aluminum screen door what's best position for cylinder.Top or about quarter way up (only other option). Thanks

Thank You! This was a big help!
You’re welcome Guy! Thanks for watching!
Good vid. How did you address the crack on the door? I have the same problem. 😅
My old mount pulled out of the jamb, is it ok to mount the brace a little further than 1/4" in order to avoid the old holes that the screws pulled out of?
I’d just fill those old holes with wood glue and gold tees cut flush!
@@TheHonestCarpenter Thanks!
Any advice for a bracket that's come off the door jamb and brought some of the jamb with it?

How do I know what size door closer to get?
Is there any point to adding a storm door chain if you already have the closer on the top of the storm door?

@@timothyodum4994 Thank You.
Is there anything that adjusts how hard it is too open the door??

Hey Sophie, unfortunately, no…they’re really only for outswing 😕
Thx bro
Thanks
how do you make the decision as to where to mount? Top or bottom? Dang it. Should have read the comments. Okay, top it is.
I know this is an old comment but you can use two if needed, one on top and bottom.
I have a problem.the piston is not extending
LOOK DUDE ! YOU KNOW YOU'RE HONEST BUT HOW DO WE KNOW THAT ?
It’s a leap of faith 😂
The protector chains that limit the screen door over opening and ripping that holding bracket from the door jam IMPORTANT

Thank you for your contribution to #TH-camUniversity. "Honey do" lists watch out😛😎😛
@Dwain Stanley You're welcome! How do I become a tenured professor? 🙂
