- Samoa went to a crunch game in Cardiff having to topple hosts Wales to make sure they qualified for the knockout stages of the Rugby World Cup in 1999. The odds were stacked against the Pacific Islanders, but they came out on top to shock the home crowd!

I'm Welsh and a product of the 1970's - while I like to see Wales win, I like to see other teams do well too. The south sea islander teams are blighted by having players poached by other international sides, hamstrung by the logistics of getting team members together for training sessions. But yeah it's why I like rugby - teams like Samoa can turn over one of the 'top table' sides (Japan Vs. South Africa being a more recent case.).

Poaching implies that they are taken illegally.
Every player anywhere has the right to choose where they play.
You ill find a number of the Samoan players are New Zealanders brought up in the NZ rugby system . Stephen Bachop double try scorer and Pat Lam their captain are good examples.

Don't know about the crowd,but the ref was definitely biased. There is anyway going to be more support for the home team. That's part of the home advantage. But the ref was shocking. Tried his best to keep Wales from losing.

Petter fats, frank bunce, Graeme bachop, ieremia etc. that was awesome Samoa team. Sadly they ended up in Allblacks Brest is history. Island teams are now up there with the best. Look at Fiji in 2023 World Cup, just like Samoa here. ❤❤❤

If the 1999 RWC had the usual format instead of that playoff format they adopted Samoa and Fiji would have made it to the quarter finals for sure.

That game was legendary to watch back then even the All Blacks were losing so it was literally anybody's game and it still is.

@@fabiov8412 that was Fiji not Samoa, well at the world cup, I think Samoa beat wales again in a test match in 2012 or 2013.
The joke was in 1991 that Western Samoa beat Wales 16-13 but what would the score have been had ALL of Samoa played Wales? We got the answer with this match: 38-31!!!

seeing them and the pacific brothers join super rugby and the eligibility rules going their way.. they are definitely going to upset a lot of big teams
maybe two or more if Moana Pasifika can lift off and Samoa can attract more players in their prime not has beens who are 30+ and making their Manu Samoa Debut after no other tier 1 team wants them so they go down to play for Samoa.

Great memories of this game - history sure repeated itself after Samoa did the same thing in 1991! Manu Samoa forever the bogey team of Wales but we must give Wales respect for they helped Samoa get their big break in international rugby by playing Samoa in Apia back in 1986 then allowing Samoa to tour Wales in 1988.
