ADDENDUM: It was brought to my attention that the TimeSplitters Rewind discord is active, and that development is still ongoing. During the production of this video, I decided to prioritize my time to attempt to reach out to as many former Free Radical staffers who were recently let go as I could (although unfortunately the only one who got back back to me didn't feel comfortable sharing any details regarding the project) but I should have made more effort to speak to someone on the TSR team as well. Like I said in the video, it'll be exciting when it's finished, as the wider fanbase of the franchise could use it now more than ever. Best of luck to the team, and I apologize to any members or supporters of TSR for the lack of details in this area. I'll be lightly trimming some of the video to better reflect this new information.
The best way to stay informed on their progress is through their Discord: discord.com/invite/nyUPVFwF84

No kidding eh? Like it wouldn't kill Embracer Group to just do a rerelease of the three TimeSplitters games, cause there's enough people out there that would buy it, me included especially if it's priced fairly. Like if Sony brought back their PS2 classics program easily TimeSplitters would one that would highly benefit from that program and since it's one of many games the company hasn't bothered ported despite the demand for it, it's easy money.

It should be noted Timesplitters Rewind is still being worked on and can be kept up with from their Discord server. Since Rewind is entirely fan made the people working on it can only do so during free time and when they have the energy to do so. Since they have work, family, future employment, etc to focus on before it and those obviously come first.
Rewind definitely had major hurdles in the past though. From what I recall Crytek forced them to use the Cryengine for it as part of the deal of making a free fan game. I believe they originally tried making it in Unreal then had to move to Cryengine when Crytek told them to. Which caused a lot of work to be thrown out. After the buyout of the Timesplitters franchise again, by another corpo, they were eventually able to go back to Unreal engine to work with but that meant again restarting their work. Per their own words though the game is further along in development then ever before.
They do have a section on their Discord server where people can try and apply to assist with the project but you need to show previous work in the field and they need certain types of work than others.
And as terrible as it is for Free Radical being shut down by Embracer their closure doesn't harm the project of Rewind at all. Not unless the owner of the Timesplitters IP tells them they can no longer work on the project which hasn't happened yet (and hopefully doesn't).

I wouldn't hold your breath on TS Rewind. There's less than 10 people working on it in their spare time. I've been keeping up to date on it for like 6 years and last I checked they hadn't even finished the first game yet. You never felt cheated when you got killed, you respawned into the action almost immediately, and you couldn't get through a match without laughing at least once. It was always fun, win or lose. Free Radical is just one of many casualties of the death of mid-shelf games. Games like Fracture, Time Splitters, Timeshift, Th3 Plan, The Saboteur, Red Faction, Matt Hazard, Driver San Francisco, Homefront, Singularity, etc. etc. are not allowed to simply exist, be fun, and end any more. Publishers don't entertain anything that can't spawn a decade of franchise sequels or bilk players for microtransactions ad nauseam.

I'd love to see an episode of What Happaned about Lord of the Rings: The third Age. Lately, I looked into the code and files from the game and there are a lot of unused skills, enemies and also there is equipment in the game you can only aquire via hacking. People always used to say it was because time restraints. I wouldn't be surprised if this is really the case, since it's an EA title, but maybe there are other factors, too. The game also feels rushed in the second half and it's also underwhelming that after Pellenor, you instantly fight Sauron, instead of fighting at the Black Gate, which Aragorn said, sooo ... yeah.
I'd definitely recommend that one for you, but information is scarce on this one. At least from my searches.
    Happy Holidays Matt!

Back in the previous episode (Thief 2014) you mentioned how Deus Ex: Mankind Divided might qualify for a What Happened? episode given its disastrous launch. Well, the whole series deserves a What Happened? because all four games had a turbulent development and/or release.
The first game was conceived in 1994 but Warren Spector had trouble trying to get the game made at Origin Systems (they rejected it) and Looking Glass Studios (too strapped for cash to afford it). Then John Romero and Mike Wilson saved Spector from consigning himself to EA by giving him a lucrative deal to make his dream game, leading to the establishment of Ion Storm Austin in early 1997 from the remains of Looking Glass Studios Austin. Then more people from Origin showed up and Spector made two teams: an RPG-oriented team led by Robert White and an immersive sim-oriented team led by Harvey Smith. These two teams clashed heavily. When Deus Ex was privately tested in 1999, the reception was not good, which led to Ion Storm Austin scaling it back. Not helping was the increasingly negative reputation Ion Storm was getting over Daikatana and Anachronox, which hurt the morale and made prospective developers wary of working at Ion Storm. When the game finally came out it was a critical and commercial success. It's a miracle considering everything that happened in its development.
The second game Invisible War was built on a modified version of Unreal Engine 2 dubbed "Flesh", which allowed for better visuals but it was a pain in the ass to program. Things only got worse when the engine programmer left and there wasn't any documentation left behind, which forced the team to scramble to fix the engine, plus Eidos mandating that Ion Storm make it also for the Xbox in tandem with the PC and the Xbox proved to be less powerful than expected. All of this forced Ion Storm Austin to severely water down the game to make it run any reliably on the Xbox. Unlike the first Deus Ex game where it ultimately hit it out of the park in spite of its development issues, Invisible War performed poorly both critically and commercially (not helping was that it came right after the juggernaut that is Call of Duty). The overall poor performance destroyed Warren Spector's reputation and whatever remaining goodwill there was towards Immersive Sims, and forced Eidos to cancel future installments in the franchise and retool an in-development spinoff by Crystal Dynamics into its own game called Project Snowblind to distance itself from the franchise whose reputation got destroyed by Invisible War's failure. It wouldn't be until BioShock that immersive sims would begin the road to recovery.
The third game, while not as troubled in development as the previous two titles, still had a number of planned features that were cut due to constraints. In addition, the Immersive Sim pedigree is very, very limited, being limited to those who can trace their heritage to Origin Systems and Looking Glass Studios (as is the case with Ion Storm Austin, Irrational Games and Arkane Studios). Eidos-Montreal, in contrast, was established completely from scratch, with none of the developers having any pedigrees in Immersive Sims, so they had to navigate on their own to "learn" immersive sims. This navigation included playing (in addition to the original two Deus Ex titles) games such as Metal Gear Solid, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, BioShock, F.E.A.R. and Rainbow Six: Vegas, and their influences show in the final product. Like the first game, Human Revolution was a critical and commercial success.
The fourth game didn't have any troubled development but was subject to meddling from Square Enix, most notably the monetization model that tainted prospective players from buying it and it fairly likely contributed to the game not doing well commercially. Not helping was that there was going to be a sequel to conclude the Adam Jensen story but Manking Divided's failure put a roadblock to that.
After Mankind Divided, Eidos-Montreal took a break and worked on Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. With the studio's and Deus Ex IP's transfer from Square Enix to Embracer Group via a new company called CDE Entertainment and Embracer's current drama, Deus Ex is in a very uncertain position. There's a rumor going around that Eidos-Montreal is working on a new Deus Ex game that will feature co-op gameplay but I wouldn't hold my breath on it. There may also be a possibility that Embracer might merge CDE into Plaion/Koch Media in the coming months.

The current world of big business and shareholders wouldn't let a game like this come out these days. They only want games that have potential to sell DLC and addon content. A big part of the series was how much different and varied stuff, features, modes, maps, characters that it came with. If they gated all that stuff behind DLC, then the fans wouldn't buy it, but they also won't release that much with a game, because they won't have that continued money maker from it.

Me and my brother have a deep love to TS3, the story got us really engaged with laughs and epic moments, the multiplayer easily got us playing over a thousand hours, specially because the game itself have like 10+ game mode to enjoy with a lot of customization in weapons, winning points, amounts of bots... So much customization that we probably had like 1 in a 100 match to be similar than one we had before, add to that the insane amount of characters to choose, skins to unlock...
TS3 probably is hated or not liked as much as TS2 but damn that it was packed with so much content that it was and endless game, one that i always used to go back and play alone or with my brother or stay all night creating a map to later play in our cousins house in a 4player match.

    A few tidbits worth mentioning:
Haze was being developed multi-platform, but a deal was struck to make an exclusive launch title for the console with the lowest priority and least finished version: the PS3. The version we got was practically cobbled together.
TSR originally had to make their project on the Cry Engine as part of the deal, which many devs found difficult to work on. Communication issues and some changes to their working relationship led to the project restarting in Unreal and the team going through a bunch of staff changes. Hence why it's taken so long, even for a fan project.
Shiny new FRD was allegedly tasked to make a Battle Royal out of Timesplitters and may have been trying to pull a "forgiveness rather than permission" move a second time. Their plan was to remake TS2 with an alternate timeline... imo, a great way to jumpstart the old series.
TSR is our only hope now, but I've little confidence the IP holder won't shoot them a take down and abandon the franchise to IP limbo.

Free Radical wasn't only a hub for creativity. It was a hub for extremely talented engineers who could create things really fast.
"Steve [Ellis, lead programmer] got something up and running really quickly. I think Sony were really impressed; their experience had been that people would take six months, eight months, a year to get anything working at all on PS2. It was down to Steve's technical ability: he had a first-person thing up and running fairly quickly."

The one "what happened" I didn't wanna see, not because I doubt Matt's abilities to make an amazing and well informed video no, not at all.
