  • #JA1271 #Whanganui #MilkTrain JA1271 arrives in Whanganui, New Zealand, with a lenghty excursion train from Paekākāriki. Meanwhile, over on the edge of town, North & Southbound milktrains make their way along the Marton - New Plymouth line.
The excursion train named 'The Whanganui Wanderer' arrived just after 200pm as the rain came. The opening scene shows the excursion crossing over Victoria Avenue at the foot of St Johns Hill on the Whanganui Town Branch. At the towns' small 3-road yard, passengers disembark and the locomotive is serviced. 90 of the passengers were bussed away to have a ride aboard PS Waimarie and other passengers make their way to sample the local shops and cafes. Over at East Town (sheltering under the Wakefield Street Overbridge) we see Northbound milktrain 544 hauled by DL's 9665 & 9671. At Okoia (5 Kilometers down MNPL) we see empty milktrain 545 cruising through with DL 9256 hauling DL 9469 and eight empty tankers after having crossed 544 at East Town. At 400pm it is time for the excursion to depart (around a cruel curve brought into use in 1989 when the downtown marshalling yards were consolidated). The closing scene is videoed 14 Kilometers down the Matarawa Valley from East Town on the MNPL.
Ja1271 was designed by New Zealand Railways and built at Hillside Workshops in 1956. Ja1271 was allocated to Invercargill depot for its entire working life and was withdrawn in 1970 after having run only some 416,000 miles. It was sold to Steam Incorporated Paekākāriki and was eventually restored in 1997.
The KiwiRail DL class was manufactured by CRRC Dalian 中车大连机车车辆有限公司 with engines from MTU (Motoren- und Turbinen-Union). Introduced from 2010 onwards, they are the most powerful diesel-electric locos in service in New Zealand (3,600 hp). The class represents the first order for a Chinese-built locomotive from a western country. The 9000 series allocation was chosen for this class of locomotive as the number 9 represents longevity and good luck in Chinese culture. There are 63 of the class in service in 2022.
Whanganui, a river settlement, is the home of Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi (The main local Maori tribe). European immigrants started settling in large numbers from 1840 onwards. Whanganui was important centre as the river provided a transport link into the centre of the North Island. The mouth of the river provided shelter for the coastal vessels to enter into. The railway was opened from East Town to Turakina in 1877 and a branch was built to Whanganui a year later. The town's economy grew with the commerce generated across the wharves between the trains and the vessels.

Hi Zane. I was under the Wakefield bridge cause it was raining. The Okoia shot was done from under the hall's veranda. Had to think quickly as I was changing my mind at the last minute & everything was on the move!
