Most flash memory use a "copy on write" file system, meaning nothing is intentionally erased until space is needed, but the file system log removes the pointer to the last file so you don't see it in windows explorer. My guess is every time the system is confused, or faces a difficult situation, the computer copies it to memory to be uploaded to train AI, with will then be downloaded back to the car to improve driving. If you use low level file system tools you will likely see so many pictures on the card, but explorer only shows you the last uploaded ones.
More than likely, erase and reset doesn't actually remove the data in those files, just marks the files as deleted. The content could still be recovered by someone sufficiently determined.
Thanks to you, I knew that instead of asking for service records for my CPO, I asked if specific services had been completed ie door handle replacement, MCU repairs, etc etc. I have a decent idea of what’s happened which helps me a lot. Thanks Uncle Rich!
It’s so different when you know a company is tracking you but then you see the evidence that they are tracking you like with those pictures off of the Tesla. I feel like going off of the grid 🤣
Now, those "photos" are the requests from central network for more examples of something needed for neural network fleet learning. seeing many many exmaples of the same thing makes the pattern more precise and "stronger", while also seeing what the cars send when requested to recognize some pattern and send it over (like the jogging lady) and filtering out manually those that are not really the right thing also helps the network to learn the things the right way.
I'm surprised that Tesla doesn't just give you a job or a sponsorship. You are great press for them. If you work for them they could steer you away from certain subjects
ts= 10:29 you say the captured images are random but they are actually often edge cases in the software, or in general high quality data points for machine learning algorithms. Those cases are very important to their proprietary software their aim for an autonomous fleet in the future for level 5 automation achieved, how to accomplish this? Improve edge case performance and supply machine learning algorithms with massive data sets. The Podcast was amazing, Uncle Rich. Definitely by far 110% one of the best guests he's had on and it's because the conversation was just so natural. Good job, keep it up
In undergrad, in a cognitive science class, I learned of a study which used video-game-style eye trackers to examine accidents. It ended up being something like 80% of accidents and near-accidents caused by not looking at the road ahead of you for more than a second. It would make sense that insurance companies would want this info.
Yeah they record you to save their ass in lawsuits, or if the vendor they use for a part causes the problem in an accident they know whom to go after. This is going to become more common with the levels of automaton goes up. Would be nice to get the data to see who hits your car in a parking lot.
Yup, tesla said that the cars capture unknown/special situations for the self driving ai to analyze. They talked about focusing on obstacles crossing the street, so that's probably why it captured some of the images.
As far as random recording, to me it feels like it's a conflicting data. Where it looks like a person but moving abnormally. Or vehicles that did not get a full recognition of a vehicle. Basically something for further analysis.
Maintaining vehicles is becoming more difficult with planned obsolescence & complex electronics. People asking for fancy infotainment systems, lazy self driving assists, and all the features of a laptop on wheels are pushing a bad trend. EV technology is great but its needs to be built to last. Nobody driving an EV is saving the environment. Any idiot in a 10yr old Corolla is a much better environmentalist than one who buys a new vehicle.

That MF Doom reference though
Comfy Cabbage I was looking for this lol
Tesla gather data, scoop her in the butter soft moon roof navigator, or the benz or the lex or the Model S
I thought that comment was a bit biased by you and I was just wanted to share my counter opinion with you with hopefully enough supporting evidence to spark a civil conversation. Highly enjoy your vids none the less and respect your opinion. Great video too. All love
I assume this is also used for state security / surveillance.
@@msnpassjan2004 And for Elon to watch when there is nothing good on TV. LOL
Love your humor, comments and observations. Yes there is no such thing as privacy anymore.
I'm taking a break from my full time job to watch your video.
That first clip of Boston was surreal to me. I just visited Boston for my first time last week and even though there wasn't much to see in the clip, it really hit my feels.
We need a Rich Rebuilds electronic & software hacker team.
Actually there is already a very SKILLED community
of proven TESLA Reverse-Engineers. Look & you will find.
Look for the likes of
a) Collin Kidder (Michigan ?)
b) Damien Maguire (Ireland)
c) Jack Rickard (Missouri)
and their associates.
I just love your outrageous levels of sarcasm
I find your videos fascinating! Keep up the good work!
Love your channel. I don't even have a tesla but i love working on cars and i dig tech talk
YOUR DROLE HUMOR JUST CRACKS ME UP
ooohhh now I get it! "2071" was just a joke duh! :P
*With each day we get closer to a corporate controlled government surveillance police state. Freedom & privacy being replaced by censorship, propaganda, and group think. They have your fingerprints, DNA, facial recognition, online banking, and so much more. All fun & convenient until you cant board that flight to esape because you're on tape J walking or you supported the wrong political party. Dan Bonacum: I’m sure your misspelling of ‘droll’ is cracking Rich up too.
The Podcast was amazing, Uncle Rich. Definitely by far 110% one of the best guests he's had on and it's because the conversation was just so natural. Good job, keep it up
Killer awesome video and information thanks a ton. I cannot wait till your Joe Roggan interview
Lmao 🤣 the end where you tell us to factory reset after a crash. That's gold.
Your electrified garage will still be earlier than any Tesla deliver
In undergrad, in a cognitive science class, I learned of a study which used video-game-style eye trackers to examine accidents. It ended up being something like 80% of accidents and near-accidents caused by not looking at the road ahead of you for more than a second. It would make sense that insurance companies would want this info.
Elon Musk called
He wants your location
He knows that already.
Saw you on the news Rich! Congratulations! Hope you get some kudos from Elon!
You have a full time job? I don't recall you mentioning that before.
Great job on the interview yesterday on JRE! Hope to see more Tesla builds soon! Possibly a model X ;)
Yeah they record you to save their ass in lawsuits, or if the vendor they use for a part causes the problem in an accident they know whom to go after. This is going to become more common with the levels of automaton goes up. Would be nice to get the data to see who hits your car in a parking lot.
Those mysterious images. The answer to what they are and what it's used for was shown during the autonomous day presentation Tesla held.
Those images are most likely a few before/during/after the system detects a fault or unknown object on the road.
Yup, tesla said that the cars capture unknown/special situations for the self driving ai to analyze. They talked about focusing on obstacles crossing the street, so that's probably why it captured some of the images.
I don't really care about cars. But you are amazing Rich! PLEASE DO STAND UP YOU ARE NATURALLY HILARIOUS
As far as random recording, to me it feels like it's a conflicting data. Where it looks like a person but moving abnormally. Or vehicles that did not get a full recognition of a vehicle.
Basically something for further analysis.
I don't give a shit about cars but I'm interested in watching you do your thing, currently watching you on JRE wish you the best brother!
Yo this is my favorite channel even though I do not work on cars
Maintaining vehicles is becoming more difficult with planned obsolescence & complex electronics. People asking for fancy infotainment systems, lazy self driving assists, and all the features of a laptop on wheels are pushing a bad trend. EV technology is great but its needs to be built to last. Nobody driving an EV is saving the environment. Any idiot in a 10yr old Corolla is a much better environmentalist than one who buys a new vehicle.
Rich could entertain me by reading the newspaper and making comments. I think his quick, sarcastic wit is wasted on TH-cam. A late night talk show on HBO, maybe?
my favorite channel when I'm working on my 1991 mustang LOL
Uncle Rich, aka - 1978 Superman. The hero we don't deserve.
Always fun Rich. Appreciate the knowledge and the laughs.
Saw you on joe rogan podcast. You should have your own podcast. You got great insight, humor and charisma.
Rich rebuilds. What is with this booshie power tool? We want kitchen knife!
My daily driver, a 1974, doesn't even buzz if you leave the lights on or the key in the ignition. The longer I have it, the more I appreciate it.
"full time job" ? What the hell sort of debauchery is this? We want more videos damnit...
it's all about me
thats the best sounding electric drill/screwdriver on youtube..
Rich channeling his inner Guido removing those screws
pit stop??
🤙🏼Just listened to your three-hour Joe Rogan podcast interview. I think you asked him more questions than anything.. great job during natural. Can't wait to see you open mic night, Stand up comedy is where the money's at! 🤑
(6:33) - Great recovery from accidentally dropping your MCU.
I still feel for you though.
Ouch! That musta hurt bad!
.
looking at all the water damage inside, i don't think it was functional anyway
It wasn't any good since it's from a flood car.
He did it on purpose - didn't quite warrant his flute playing though, which is too bad. 😞
We need some flute-worthy content again! 🎶 🎼 🎵
Been watching you for a while... love the knowledge and you're calm antics... you are the man... lmao
This comment section seems kinda pointless if you can post something before the video begins
While I love the features of the Tesla oh, I have absolutely no interest in the car but I really do dig your videos. You are the light in the dark vacuous hole that is Tesla Motors.
NOTIFICATION SQUAD, love your videos Rich, Keep up all the great work!
Tesla records when the driver for some reason overrules the autopilot.
They then use this data to find out why this happened, and try to improve on the AP with that. So the pictures you showed actually make sense and don't seem that random to me.
Elon actually mentioned this in an interview with Lex Friedman (still on YT).
Great video though!
Greets from Germany!
Really looking forward to your Joe Rogan podcast!
When is it?

joe sent me here, hope your channel gets the huge boost it deserves. subbed :)
Hey Rich what oil do you use in your rear end ?
I cant tell if this is a car question or a personal one.
@@TravisFabel im legit dying 😂
Great video
The shop, Sam's ford will get finished, Rich retires and the earth's core solidifies the earth stops spinning we all fall off and TH-cam goes offline.
Then where would we be!
Keep on keeping on!👍
you should do a collab with jerryrigeverything for a "complete teardown of a tesla"
Well the show would be Rich taking the car apart and Zack scraping everything with a scalpel.
DUDE! Just watched JRE with you ( I've seen every one) and you were by far the best guest ever and you NEED to start doing standup, today. Love to you and your family
A Tesla has files of different scenarios, like someone jogging next to the vehicle. This is used to further enhance our pilot, by showing the computer how to drive around different obstacles.
eddy jones this turned on when the car was parked.
Eddy will be first to volunteer himself to get fisted by Robocop A.I., hell tell us it's for our own benefit as the robot proceeds to f***k his entire family.
Came to see Joe Rogan talk about Elk & MMA left wanting to see information about Tesla. Ayyy bruh. You earned a new sub.
Where can I buy that mask? (With cash of course)
I’ve watched your vids in passing, here and there, but your JRE interview of Joe was great! Got a sub from me brother, keep up the content!
We need regular entertainment I'm making my fish do a hunger strike till your next video the ball is in your court now!!!!!!!
Two things:
1) DAYUM!!!! Nice job gathering Intel!
Hmm, will Rich retire from his Full Time Job before Sam finishes his Focus RS?
And Sam has no excuse cause he doesnt have a full time job.
Those scenes are probably those that the autopilot system had difficulty 'understanding' - so sends them too Tesla to be added to the training data.
Or Elon has the car programed to record any chics that might be hot going passed the car. LOL
6:35 was it actually an accident or did you break it on purpose?
