  • Abby is a 1974 American blaxploitation horror film about a woman who is possessed by an African sex spirit. The film stars Carol Speed as the title character, William H. Marshall and Terry Carter. It was directed by William Girdler, who co-wrote the film's story with screenwriter Gordon Cornell Layne.
The film was a financial success, grossing $4 million in a month, but was pulled from theaters after the film's distributor, American International Pictures, was accused of copyright violation by Warner Bros., which saw the film as being derivative of The Exorcist and filed a lawsuit against AIP.[1] Girdler himself told the Louisville Courier Journal: "Sure, we made Abby to come in on the shirttail of The Exorcist." The film is also inspired by 1968's Rosemary's Baby. - Wikipedia

Little known fact. Abby was pulled from the theater s early because Warner bros sued saying that it mimicked the exorcist too much. Wow.
They was hating because the movie made 4 million in a month or so. Black films wasn't suppose to be that successful in that time. So maybe it wasn't necessarily your mom's that kept you from seeing the film when it first came out.

Thats a damn shame. This movie was pulled from the theater's because of vopywrite b.s.? No, what is was that The big shot company Warner Brothers saw this movie was getting too much publicity and $$ . Fearful because it was a all black cast and even though it was a "low budget" movie, it was drawing a lot of attention. Its all good when they steal and copy ; they get away with it and make billions. And we cant do anything about it. But let the situation be reversed, they get angry and jealous ,and find a way to end and stop the growth of $$ or anyway to keep us down. Can't win for losing. But overall, its still a great movie. I was in middle school when this came out.

I don't see how this low budget movie got so much attention to where it was removed from theaters. It came out around the same time as _The Exorcist,_ a much bigger movie with a huge box office draw.

Demon-possessed "Abby" had me laughin' and trippin' throughout the entire movie. So, what if "Abby" is similar to the "The Exorcist"?! I don't care! How many horror-genre movies have been made about Count Dracula and vampires, mummies, zombies, werewolves, the Invisible Man (like "Hollow Man"), Dr. Frankenstein's Monster, demonic possession, serial killers and/or slashers (like "Friday the 13th", "Halloween", and "Scream"), doppelgangers, deadly, sadistic games (like "Saw" and "Escape Room"), and cannibalistic, serial-killing, inbred, rural families living in the backwoods and/or obscure places (like "The Hills Have Eyes", "Wrong Turn" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), etc.? This is the first time I've seen "Abby" -- thanks for the upload. I love this channel's flair for the nostalgia. Thank you, "reelblack".

I remember watching this film in quality at a then neighborhood movie theater in Philly when I was 12; this film made a strong impact on me then. Although it is somewhat dated now over the decades - it still entertains. The acting was pretty good, the sound FX were very good and contributed greatly, the make-up could've been better but then again this was a very low budget film as most of the black exploitation films were back then good direction and editing. This film has bad quality because it is from a surviving release print that was hidden after the producers of "Exorcist" took the makers of this film to court and won for copy-write infringement (how can anyone put a monopoly on demonic possession) and as a result the film's negative and all other prints were destroyed.
The film shoot in Louieville, KY experienced many strange occurances as Carol Speed described in an interview; I once read somewhere that the director had sold his sole to the devil and died right after the contract expired.

When I teach Black Film I always show this as an example of Hollywood intentionally killing black filmmaking. After the success of The Godfather (Paramount) and Chinatown (Paramount), Hollywood no longer needed to make black films to make a buck as 80% of those audiences were black. Also, WB and its newly acquired United Artists didn't have enough black films to compete, with their last successful black film being Cleopatra Jones (The sequel Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold tanked). They were being outshined by MGM (Shaft) and couldn't touch them, so they went after AIP. AIP (American International Pictures) was KNOWN for making black versions of popular films like Hit Man (Black remake of Get Carter).
This film was plagued with a lot of problems from jump. Warner Bros. did indeed sure American International during filming for it being a rip of The Exorcist even though they were the silent distributors of American International; this lawsuit caused William Girdler to die an early death, eventually bankrupted American International by 1979, and all but killed the careers of Austin Stoker, William Marshall, and Carol Speed who are now relatively unknown or remembered actors sidelined into indie (or in the case of Marshall kid shows).
The 1974 Midwest Tornado Outbreak happened on the first day of shooting and cost the production half the budget.
Carol Speed had a lot of health issues making it; she had already had a nervous breakdown towards the end of The Mack (she was being groomed by pimp Frank Ward who was murdered while filming was going on).
Local church groups kept hindering production after they say William Marshall and thought he was evil because he did Blacula.
Marshall also didn't want to do it because he thought it was too typecasted to Marmawalde and he had already done Blacula and Scream Blacula Scream, and walked off the picture.

Saw this as a kid. Bought the VHS years ago. Tonight I thought about this movie and said I need to look it up on TH-cam. I forgot about it, opened up TH-cam on my phone and the first video I see is this movie. I was like yes and then I'm like WTF, I just thought about the movie and all of a sudden, TH-cam puts it on my feed
