good advice except the defender isn't planting he is "checking" the kick, which is "lifting" and "turning" the leg outward so the shin bone is facing the incoming kick to do the most damage. Nothing to do with how high you kick when you kick for the thigh and a blocker lifts the leg to block it. The real problem is the kicker not rotating his leg so he is leading with his shin and the lack of conditioning. Also as a side note, calf kicks are easily avoided unless the other guy practices doing the calf kick only when the opponent has that leg planted and not able to check or just basically lift his leg so you miss.
I disagree, I’ve fought 75% of my life lol, I’m Thai from nong rong, that’s where every Thai fighter comes from, it’s country, very poor, really nice tho it isn’t ghetto, beautiful place but poor, you have too pick your shot, too hurt a nerve you don’t need much force, also dude showed an inside kick instead of an outside kick, if I’m calf kicking you I aim alittle above your ankle, you not gonna knee check me there, I try too kick the bottom of your calf crease or lower, the nerve runs all the way down, I also throw fake head kicks and I’m just trying too kick your shoulders and forearm, train you too block a headkick so I can kick your ribs, kickboxing and Muay Thai is so nuance in mma, but lemme tell you, if you have a heavy leg you can kick anybody anywhere, a shoulder kick sucks, in my village in buri ram, we are hardcore shoulder kickers, it’s hard too block a shoulder kick, after a few you gotta think fuck should I lift my hands or come in, then I can pick your head of your ribs. Petch and superbon are kings of this. Oh fuck I didn’t finish the video hahahaha this dude is completely right, hahahahaha aim for about 3 inches about the ankle, I’m not gonna edit it, that’s good knowledge, my mistake tho.
Finally, someone bringing this out, another hint is to never kick with 100% strength without an early setup, and that's something you can apply to everything actually, surprise makes any strike hit harder
Thankyou I’ve been tired of people asking me how to calf kick. I always tell them watch kickboxing and Muay Thai. That stuff don’t work like that there.
exactly. it only works in mma because mma fighters arent good at striking or defense. its literally the most low skilled and high risk move out there. winning off a calf kick in mma is about as big as a fluke win you can go for.
It's cause bone on flesh is kind to bone and mean to flesh. Butt checking changed the game. Personally I say go crazy on the fleshy parts when you have cut an angle and it's virtually impossible to check. Every other time go for the foot sweep
The toe? Really? Where are you striking someone with the toe part of your boot? Pointy boots or steel toe, sure. Hiking boots? Use the heel and the space between both your ankles in the front.
@@robertchiarizia9463 Some hiking boots are pretty stiff at the front. As a matter of fact, most boots are pretty stiff at the front compared to sneakers, converse, vans, jordans, etc. Of course, nowhere near as strong as a steel toe cap, but strong enough to help protect your toes while maximizing impact.
@@UrbanDefenseSystems I own a pair of Raichle hiking boots I have had for over 30 years. (Vibram soles) If you kicked someone with those, you would break your meta carpals, and sprain your ankle. I prefer fighting without boots to be honest. Makes me too slow. Without boots my kicks are better, my footwork nimble, and I can transfer energy into my hands for a strike far better pushing off the ground instead of pushing into soft shoes. Shoes take 50% of your power from a strike unless they have thin soles. I will literally start taking my shoes off if I think someone is gonna make me bang. Jacket, loose clothing, and shoes, off. If I had time to whip out some Vaseline, I would probably grease up too 😂
@@robertchiarizia9463 Yeah, well it would have to depend on the type of hiking boot you have, but I'd much rather fight someone while wearing a steel/hard cap boot. It's just too easy to land a debilitating bone breaking blow with one of those. It cracks me up that right after he says the guy will put his weight on that leg he shows a leg break clip w the guys leg up in the air, clearly not down w his weight on it. Lol
I've done that a bunch of times without even breaking my foot and it hurt so bad I stopped leg kicking entirely for a while. Had to seriously tweak my technique to reliably hit the thigh every time and not the knee.

Tbh turning your kick over like a traditional thai kick for a calf kick is the first mistake. Kick with the ball of your ankle. Very little rep. If they try and defend.
It's the more traditional target when kicking the legs, but it's much easier to check since you can just lift your leg up and slightly out. It's best to mix up calf kicks and traditional leg kicks from the inside and out to keep your opponent from guessing
I think Bas Rutten said to kick at a downward angle to prevent potential leg break scenarios. Maybe I'm misremembering but I'm 90% sure that's what he said.
its not just bas rutten. the thais preach the same exact thing. mma fighters didnt create the calf kick. its been around for a long time and its a very low skilled and high risk move. you notice theres barely anyone snapping their legs in half in thailand unless its a foreigner? calf kicks are effective in mma because mma fighters just arent that good in striking. plain and simple.

Haha this made me laugh. Love the shoulder kick idea! If you’re ever in Vancouver come check out the gym, I’d love to train with you.
gotta love a guy with humility
Dude you made me read all the way just to eventually agree?? Lmfao
😂
Bro you're such a troll I love you 😂😂😂
"I like those odds."
Finally, someone bringing this out, another hint is to never kick with 100% strength without an early setup, and that's something you can apply to everything actually, surprise makes any strike hit harder
or just learn how to properly jab. you cant snap your arm while jabbing. theres a reason why thais dont calf kick and dont snap their legs in half.
When I started martial arts I always thought why don’t they kick down there it’s way skinnier there than for example the thigh etc
It's cause bone on flesh is kind to bone and mean to flesh. Butt checking changed the game.
Personally I say go crazy on the fleshy parts when you have cut an angle and it's virtually impossible to check. Every other time go for the foot sweep
You ever got a kick to the thigh? Most people can't walk after one, if you know what you're doing
Very good advice. Thank you for this.
And if you have hiking boots or even heavy shoes, use the toe of the shoe to do great damage without much risk.
The toe?
(Vibram soles)
If you kicked someone with those, you would break your meta carpals, and sprain your ankle.
Most people wanting to scrap on the street aren't MMA fighters, so I can forego a few advantages of fighting barefoot for the ability to drop someone with one well placed kick, it's a high percentage/low risk move a leg kick. Which is why all the noobies at MMA gyms gravitate into turning every sparring match into a low leg kick fest lol
my crampons with vertical front points will go in anything too
First good advice I’ve heard online for fighting in a long time 😂
Well i always thought about this but you answered it great work
Man... He is Spitting the facts. I'm actually a Big fight fan.
But I Swear To God I don't want to see our favourite fighters suffer. Shit is really Career Ending.
Dude this is common sense (THE WHOLE POINT OF A CALF KICK IS TO STOP THE PERSON FROM USING THERE LEG IN A FIGHT) of course you shouldn't hit something you cant move like a wall
Was sparring with a buddy a few years ago he kept throwing them high leg kicks which pissed me off and the next one he threw I shifted to southpaw and checked the kick broke his foot. This is really good advice 👏
We getting paralyzed with this one💀🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯
Hurt my foot in sparring yesterday please listen to this man lol
You hit him with the wrong part of your leg. The shin has to hit at it's strongest part, #research , why shoud I tell you what the video should have.
I’m acutely aware 😂 I went for speed instead of technique shit happens cry me a river
Hey Kajan can you do a video of how to have strong legs when doing arm bar from the mount to the side amd not losing position?
Yes I can definitely do that

This is world class advice. Thank you very much coach. ❤ 🙏🏼
I see Volk kicking right at the side of the knee very often. A lot of guys do that actually. Seems extremely dangerous. Why do they do it? High risk high reward maybe?
Probably
It makes me cringe, until I watch Muay Thai and realise how crazy they are.
@@JohnLooglemankicking the knee directly is actually illegal in muay thai lol if it was legal their knees would be BUSTED
Kicks to the knee like that would be more a Muay Boran than a Muay Thai thing @@JohnLoogleman
Looking to do Muay Thai soon my biggest concern was this glad you showed a better way for low kicks I feel it’s a much safer bet to kick that low near the ankle it seems
Shin conditioning is very important after 3 years of pain i can Kick hard steel and concrete, is very important i had end a few fights with one or 2 leg kicks 💯 nice vid respect bro
We both suffer lmao lol
Thanks a lot
Yup, I noticed this after analyzing the people who broke their own legs trying a calf kick a few years ago.
I hope you get famous. Solid advice right there
💯 agree
Genuine question: is the knee joint safe to target with a low kick?
I’d use something linear so I don’t end up like Anderson Silva
@@tristargymwestcoast more like Jon Jones oblique kick to the knee?

I just front kick it
That guy's leg has crazy flexibility.
He is the real life Mr Fantastic😂
It cracks me up that right after he says the guy will put his weight on that leg he shows a leg break clip w the guys leg up in the air, clearly not down w his weight on it. Lol
Some guy broke his foot on my knee trying to kick higher up with the lower part of his leg
I've done that a bunch of times without even breaking my foot and it hurt so bad I stopped leg kicking entirely for a while. Had to seriously tweak my technique to reliably hit the thigh every time and not the knee.

Love that! I met Kajan Johnson at Unified MMA in Edmonton a couple weeks back and I gotta say he is the most humble and awesome chill fighter I met. He gave us some good advice to on injuries and being strong enough to pull outta a fight if you're injured because my cousin got reinjured in his fight that night. Cheers Kajan!
Cheers brotha, great meeting you!
Kajan Johnson! I didn't recognise him! Remember him from the Ultimate Fighter Nation!
Man, I had yet to research this. Thanks man!
Thank you very much here's a sub and like 🎉
Tbh turning your kick over like a traditional thai kick for a calf kick is the first mistake. Kick with the ball of your ankle. Very little rep. If they try and defend.
Alex Pereira disliked your information in this clip.
Alex Pereira has mastered this kick in such a way that there is no 50-50, it's 100% suffering for whoever takes it.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
is aiming above the knee better??
People kick the calf cos there is so little muscle there for the swelling to occur that it gets damaged much easier
What the other guy said, there's also less time to respond, and there's the possibility for a sweep.
It's the more traditional target when kicking the legs, but it's much easier to check since you can just lift your leg up and slightly out. It's best to mix up calf kicks and traditional leg kicks from the inside and out to keep your opponent from guessing
your thighs can take a lot more punishment than your calf muscles.

@@eddyray-yb6igyou are yapping and said nothing of real substance sir.
@@Cornchip445 keep calf kicking. its good for you.
@@eddyray-yb6ig ufc fighter legit base their game plan around the calf kick. You can’t say they are just bad strikers bc the best strikers of just about every form fight or have fought for them. Over 300 paper view events and only two legs have snapped from a calf kick as well. Anderson Silva being the first. Like I just don’t see how you can insist that the calf kick isn’t effective. Too add on we have Thai fighters come fight all the time and they legit throw calf kicks. I just don’t see how you even came upon this opinion.
@@Cornchip445 yes they are bad strikers. the greatest striker of all time got his ass beat by a youtuber in boxing.
show me thais throwing calf kicks. since they do it all the time it shouldnt be hard to find. and theres been way more than 2 leg snaps in the ufc let alone mma. stop it.
And did anyone else notice how he cropped out the guys foot because his weight wasn’t on that leg it was just him checking the kick that broke the other guy shin. Doesn’t matter if you kick their calf or their thigh, the kick can be checked.
As a kickboxing trainer I have to give this man his probs. This is one of the most important advice about lowkicks. A lot of fighters on the highest level of UFC do this simple thing wrong. Many of them😂. And also, its very important to check lowkicks. A few checks or one good check and he wont kick anymore believe me. So great advice my friend♥️

This guy knows more than Anderson Silva , sure bud 👍
I have learned from his mistakes. This is the evolution of martial arts
@@tristargymwestcoast Good answer Kajan.
Anderson was a better competitor by a looooong mile, but even he had some suspect technique issues in his prime. Specifically, his takedown defense. It’s genuinely rubbish.
