Dear Scotty, 2007 Ford Fusion SEL 2.3L I4 Aisin 5 speed manual. 104,000 miles. Front wheel drive. should I change the manual transmission oil? I can't find an info online. Ford says it doesn't need it. would love your input.
@@art2975 07 camry 154k. i will baby this car until the wheels fall off. keeps me out of the dealerships and very reliable. new ones are 40k plus. you have a great model year. i have the famous oil burner.
They should simplify cars with manual features for those who actually need one to function and work instead of making them like luxury furniture in a home theater
They do people just don't know they exist you can still get trucks with colum shifters and roll up windows, you can get small nissans and chevys and other brands that don't even come with cruise control, they're out there you just need to look
my manual civic si makes my drive to work every day very economical and fun. Don't know why I need anything else. I'm in the market for a used cheap old school ford ranger or something. so i can haul stuff from yard sales in the summer and have a backup for when my dad visits.
@@dampergoldenrod4156 A Stripper Electric Lightning is my Ideal New Truck. Extra Cab, 8' bed, roll up windows and Electric 4WD. No Traction Nannies button. Rental Van Radio. No leather. Nover The Air Updates! It'd work hard, get dents and the windsheild will crack. Don't need range, need to burn 100 miles per day, NASCAR style, win the stoplights and get into a muddy jobsite for work. Where we going for lunch? Haul water uphill on the weekends.
Owning a car is a must where I live. No public transportation, snow and ice, miles to town, no bike lanes, etc.. I used to get by with a motorcycle and sidecar but riding 10 miles to work at 18° below zero on black ice is no fun.
In Canada, outside of Vancouver, life is impossible here without a car. Ironically, the warmest city where you can actually walk is the only one with good public transportation thay covers the majoroty of the city. The frozen dumps in the rest of the country have barely functioning public transportation that covers like 15% of the city.
@art2975 It''s not economical to have train systems for scarcely populated places. Occasionally small places of 50 people get a train stop if they are near a route between 2 large cities, but that's not the norm.
Rural western Canada here. Every rural kid gets a vehicle at 16, usually a truck, but NEVER a new one. They ALL learn to wrench while growing up as well.
Adding to the frustration of ridiculously high prices is the fact that the vehicles are not being built to last any more. The trend of putting turbochargers on tiny engines and sticking them in heavy cars and trucks means you can forget getting the high mileage out of brands such as Toyota. So today consumers are paying way more, and getting way less.
I bought a 2008 civic for $3000 7 years ago. People at work ask me when I’m going to retire and I tell them. When my civic dies and I can’t fix it myself. I’m not going to buy a new car so I can make payments to get to a place I don’t want to be in the first place.😂
Exactly My 2007 Scion TC only needs new brake pads and rotors, tie rods, CV axles, bushings and struts and it'll be almost new. I can do most of the work myself.
Ugh I know! I'm in the market for an old Camry lol guess I'm going to start looking but may wait and see what happens in the market. Cars were cheap a few years back
Friend of mine works at Leander Toyota. They have started paying their salesman a monthly salary to offset the lack of sales. Toyota Tundra's for $85K? Very few can afford a $800 per month car payment. New car sales are down 39% since 2022. And their turnover is very high.
If you come to costa Rica you will get a heart attack! I asked for a 2024 silverado. 84k and 1600 per month Corvette c8 worths 179k Tesla cybertruck 200k BMW x6 179 000 I drive a 2012 Mitsubishi montero and have 2M invested in rentals. And i will never pay that for a car. I bought mine for 12k
Yeah I don't know who is able to purchase these 70k 80k some pushing 100k trucks? It seems as the price goes so far beyond the vast majority of wage working people's wages and with the insanely high price of the rent in the rigged housing "market" high food prices high medical prices high insurance etc. I don't see how any average Joe can buy one of these trucks. So wtf is buying them? It seems to be low sales volume and an ever smaller group of wealthy people the dealers and "car" manufacturing are selling to. It's pretty crazy and just seems to be getting worse like corporations now only care about selling anything to the billionaires "trickle down" minions and screw the vast bulk of society & their attitude is "who cares if there's no affordable vehicle for the American People to get back and forth to work"
What gets me is they keep adding so much crap that I DON'T want like glass roof, giant rims and complicated touch screens, but they will not make seats more comfortable, put decent bumpers on, or tailgate glass that opens separately... If only a manufacturer would make a full size station wagon again!!!
How about a simple SEAT COVER that can make it to 100k miles? I'm gonna win the lottery. WHen I do, I'll buy my first new car(s) ever. As part of the deal, the dealer will agree to replace and install any SEAT COVER I designate at 100k miles, 200k mils and so on. I expect a bumper-to-bumper warranty, too, but you're GOING TO give me new seat covers!
I'm looking forward to getting rid of my car this weekend. I'll be able to get by with car services and rentals if i really need a car for a few days. But, i barely drive nowadays since i started working in the city again, so in my situation, owning the car was a waste of money.
I was so proud of myself for paying off my first car…LOVED not having a car payment. Then the CVT in my 2013 Nissan Altima started making noise after 100,000 miles. I have a car payment again. Can tell you it definitely eats into your budget, no matter how much you’re making. Ubering everywhere instead of having a car payment does make a lot of sense, never thought of it that way.
fk yeah it does, my car payment and insurance is 700, which isn't too bad than most, but if I could pocket that every month, I'd be sitting on a good amount of savings .
Because you only looking for Japanese cars there a lot old American car just as reliable for example Lincoln town car, Buick, crown Vic and lot more you can buy for good price there is still lot good deals out there
I've currently got -25 deg. F. in Kremmling Colorado, Jan 21. My Tesla 3, fully charged, made it to the mailbox where it died and is now being recharged via generator. Good thing my mailbox is only 200 ft away!
I sold my 2016 Nissan Pathfinder for $20,000. I bought it for $40,000 brand new. It had low miles 22,000 when I sold it. I still have my 2002 Toyota Corolla has over 250,000 miles. Thanks Scotty. Keeping it until it dies
I had one of those Corollas with 270k plus km! I didn't give it much thought. I thought that this was normal. The last stupid car I bought didn't make it to 100 K km! That really, really upset me!
U bet it is... Crazy..? Higher profitability. Lower production runs. More robotic construction. Less labor. And making the psychotic elites happy there are fewer automobiles every year produced. That's why.
They got greedy in 2022 when people had no choice but to buy what was in stock because there was nothing on the lots... It's caught up to them. Kia is the only one who was ready for this.
My Tacoma’s catalytic converter got stolen for the second time the other week, and I was left without transportation for two weeks. My insurance paid only half of it, and I will be looking at even higher insurance payments in my future. I have to admit I thought about how nice it would be to not have all the expense of having a vehicle. Maybe I should buy a 30 year old vehicle or something.
Buying a car now would be a bad financial decision. Some people don't have a choice but the old argument of "it's going to cost more than it's worth to fix" is slowly fading away which is good for mechanics. $1000 or two is better than $60000 for a piece of crap. Also if you are going to buy a mid size SUV then just buy a car. You can fit a lot in a trunk and save a lot of money. That's my rant.
The banks are one of the major reasons why the cars are costing so much, they are approving loans over what the cars are worth and approving people who can not make the payments. I went to buy a vehicle and they had a mark up of over $8000 on an advertised $32,000 on a Rav4. I purchased Ford Maverick truck hybrid for $3k less than sticker (16 month wait). Then a couple of months ago I picked up a new 2023 Dodge Challenger Scat pack with 6 speed transmission for $44k (MSRP was $56k). I did everything in cash, which most dealerships did not want to even hear cash. Dealerships all want financing.
Not sure about the rest of the world but in Canada it is $25,000 for a Nissan versa after all fees and taxes. I was going to go pick up a new car but after seeing the prices and the high interest rates I just decided to fix up my old car and run it another year.
I bought 2012 Chevy silverado six wks ago for $8500 with 214K..had to put $1500 so far. New fuel pump, ball joints, battery, reprogrammed the transmission because it was down shifting hard. DIC switch. It's still cheaper than new. I don't have a loan, paid cash.
I paid 14K in 2019 for a 2016 corolla at carmax. A 2016 corolla at carmax now costs more than 14k. It is now five years older and costs more? How effed up is that?
I bought my 2010 Lexus in 2018 for 16k out the door with 65k miles. Today, an 8 year old Lexus, same model, same miles, is no less than 24k. I just found a 2015 Lexus, same model, with 180k miles, for 16k. Same price, 10 years old, triple the freaking miles.
I would think that it is ILLEGAL to reprogram the speedometers even if they’re a rental car business. This means you’re buying a rental car when they’re sold with much higher mileage than it shows. That’s just wrong!
It's "trickle down" mafia billionaires not vague "reset" the Silicon Valley Wall Street billionaires technology abusers are the ones abusing technology to no limits stealing everyone's valuable private property our data and making everything "connected" to their AI systems to do "dynamic pricing" price gouging abusing us with our own data the billionaires stole from us and charge us "subscription" for literally everything because the billionaires are abusing technology and they buy the government. Everything they're doing should be illegal theft is supposed to be illegal but not for the billionaires who buy the government
2:00 very true. I’m 18 I still live with my parents and we plan to have me live there until I’m out of college, and I drive my mom’s old car. I dread the day that thing dies, and my bank account is terrified of that day
How about a car where you have to crank the windows up/down? Or, maybe stick you arm out the window to adjust the side mirror? These cars, like the old days, would cost less and be fixable by owners.
Greedy Auto manufacturers caused this problem. Do not buy any new cars, trucks, or SUV’s. Even the Japanese automakers are making cheaply built and insane MSRP’s. Toyota lost their minds and now I don’t care about any new cars they are cranking out.
Amen, I am 66 years old and cars are way expensive.I could have bought an new Olds 442 ,50 years ago for under $6000 in 1976. Prices now on new vehicles are just unaffordable and ridiculously expensive!!!
In Italy so many people buy as well SUV and big cars, but we definitely have a lot more small cars here then in US (Yaris, panda, fiat 500 and stuff like that)
When I had to buy a battery the other day I was legit sticker shocked at car battery prices. Like I legit was just not going to purchasing a battery on principal. A few years ago you could get a Duralast Gold top end Auto Zone battery for like $55.99.
2012 Mazda 2. Bought in 2017 w 96kms. One tiny recall, nothing but gas, oil, tires and brakes. It was up on the display rack. The gm tried to sell me extended warranty ( $2300), though the car was from Quebec, likely voiding the warranty off the hop. Its so go kart like (5 spd, hand brake), it has a traction control switch which i don't dare turn off. 16" wheels, larger hatch spoiler and the light in the cargo area has to be turned off and on manually 😂😂😂 100hp/94ft/lb. Has shy of 150kms now. Mazda quality or maybe just reliability has really come up. Paid $8100 all in.
there is an alternative mode of transportation if you manage to live close to your place of employment using e-steps and/or electric scooters For an electric scooter electrification actually makes sense. You can just take out the battery and charge it in your appartment. Especially if you get all your food delivered by uber eats. Combine that wil European style public transport and things start to look completely different.
The Auto Industry is in trouble. I think they need to return to the basics and price them in the $30-$45k range. It’s insane that a basic Nissan Z cost $50-70k with 400 HP. Plus out of warranty repairs are getting insane with newer cars. Shop labor rates are getting insane. Recently got quoted $2900 for timing chain replacement on a 10 year old car that’s only worth $6-7k in perfect working order.
Yes you are correct. This is exactly what's going on in NYC. Congestion pricing, endless bike lanes, insane tolls, and endless speed cameras. Vote red my friend.
They can't afford a car but can afford a home within the city limits of a major metro? A car is a whole lot cheaper than a $750k townhouse in a dangerous neighborhood. Save us from the central planners.
Me and my family share a car. Is it inconvenient? Sometimes yeah. But better than having a crazy car payment, basically just working to pay for a car that I can't use because I have to work to pay for it.
No.....that isn't what is happening. Go ahead and ask those huge corporations. One bought over 700 homes during the recession in my Sacramento area......and they rent them out. All 2/1 and 3/2 homes. Old homes.
Has nothing to do with the government has to do with the greedy corporations. It's the same thing now people think Elon Musk is a hero ??? He doesn't care about you All he cares about are dollar signs
Believe it or not, auto prices have NOT kept up with the 1970 to 2000 inflation period. I was in the pick-up truck accessory business during that time and I got out in 2000 because of the extrapolation. I found prices doubled every 10 years., a1979 Ford 3/4 ton 4x4 cost $10K, an '89 which I bought cost $20k and a 1999 F-250 4x4 cost $40K. Some quick figures reveal the same truck in 2009 would cost $80K, a 2019 $160k, and a 2029 Ford F-250 4X4 $320k!
Hey Scotty, I bought a 23 Toyota RAV4 hybrid, great car, in the summer gets 44 in town, but what they don t tell you, is in the winter it drops down to 27 in the cold. Another thing I don t like is the interior is a little on the cheap side. And the seats feel cheap. Like your show Scotty. Thanks
The problem is they don't make cars anymore they are pricing people out of owning a car they need to make cheaper cars something 15 to 20 thousand dollar range
0:37 In order to take advantage of those ride-rental fleet car programs one needs to be in a large metropolitan area which may have them. Like San Francisco for instance; which I remember taking full advantage of. Only had to drive anywhere like once every six months. 2:58 Used EV values, especially for the more affordable models, are starting to drop to values of near Zero dollars.
Here in the snow belt, we also need to wash UNDER the car which is not as easy. An ordinary garden hose may not have enough pressure to remove the salt.
we need 2001-2005 era cars with minimal tech and DIY repairs. All the new machines are just electrical appliances with four tyres. We arent progressing here with this new tech loaded cars.
That is a two sentence sermon, and I'm shouting amen. My testimony: In 2018 I had a $5.5k check from my ins company after I caused an accident that totaled my 12 year old base model Mercedes C class. My dad had purchased it three years prior from a private seller for $6k, and knowing it would be expensive to maintain I got full coverage. Anyway, at that point I just wanted anything under $5k to get me to and home from work while I saved for a down payment on a 4 to 5 year old Civic, which I'd planned buy during year end closeouts in 2020. I ended up at a Subaru dealership with a CPO 2006 Legacy 2.5i with 180k miles I found online, and the sales rep waived all the fees and the warranty to get me OTD for $4500. All I knew at that point was Toyota engines are the tits, Honda isn't far behind, and so long as I stick with mfg maintenance schedule and drive defensively most any Japanese make/model will serve me well. How I ended up with what I now know to be the "bulletproof" EJ250 boxer engine pre head gasket issues is divine intervention, cause just over 6 years later I'm at 239k miles with only standard maintenance and repairs, and she's still going strong. She shifts seamlessly, and doesn't even flinch jumping from 35mph on the on-ramp to 60 in 2 seconds so I can safely merge onto 75. My entertainment choices are radio or CD, and the only notifications I've seen are low fuel and check engine when I let myself almost run out of both gas and oil. I have a gauge that tells me how many miles left til the gas tank is empty, my combined MPG, the outside temp, and the time. It's perfect. Sooo, to back up what you said, I've learned this: 1. Stick to a standard maintenance schedule 2. Take 5 mins a week to check fluids and tire pressure 3. Keep a spare tire with a jack, jumper cables, motor oil, coolant, and power steering fluid in your trunk 4. Physically open the owner's manual and read it 5. Place a flat cardboard box underneath where you park so you'll know if it's ever leaking fluid 6. Have a trusted local mechanic 7. Set aside $50/month for maintenance and repairs 7. Pay attention, take your time, and don't drive stupid 8. DON'T do any aftermarket engine mods I feel like if everyone followed this there would be no market for backup cameras, pressure sensor and traction control notifs, or really software in general beyond what's required for OBDII code readers, speedometer, fuel tank gauge, radio, and clock. There's just no logical reason to get less than ~300k miles out of a well maintained car with minimal electronics, even in the rust belt where I live.
I found a Nissan Versa listed at 13k. I have fair credit. I wanted to put 4k down and the best they could do for me was offer me a financing option that would have left me paying 19k in total after 3 years for a 13k car. That’s over 46% the sticker price. So I took my down payment and bought a motorcycle. Sometimes being a single person who lives 30 min between work, school, family, and airport really has its benefits such as the freedom to say “I don’t need your silly car contract”.
We saved almost 10k to put down to get a bigger car because we are having a 3 child. We decided we can get a slimmer car seat for $200 and pocket our money. Why give it to these dealers for a car payment and super high insurance. They don’t make buying a car something worth doing these days.
If you do your own work owning a vehicle/vehicles its not that expensive. If you have payments, full coverage insurance and have to take it to a shop for everything then yes it can be overwhelmingly expensive.
For example i was quoted 1400 to change a heater core well i done it myself for 200 bucks and yes dash had to be removed its not hard just take your time and put it back the way it came off. However i have i worked on cars since i was like 15 so easier for me
If it's got the 3.3 or 3.8 those will run forever. Ours is a 2004 with 302K and it runs great. If it's cold like close to freezing it has to warm up else it won't go into gear though.
Taught my son what my father and (wealthy) uncle taught me. "If you can't pay cash for a car or boat, you can not afford it. NEVER finance anything that declines in value".
Certain circumstances warrant a hire purchase of a new car e.g. safety , for long distance driving to work. Other than that , pay cash only is good advice...
I bought a 2023 1500 Ram 1500 classic for $60,000 cad $700/month for 96 months. When I was 23 I bought a Ram 3500 laramie with every option for the same price for 6 years and had I kept it to term I would've paid the exact same price as this truck will be $72,000. Had I not needed a vehicle for work I wouldn't be owning a vehicle.
I have had 3 Toyota Camrys's and 2 Lexus vehicles, all different model years. Each one of them is off on the vehicle speedometer - they are normally off by 2 mph. So, if the speedometer says 70MPH - in actuality I am doing 68 MPH. Apparently, they programed this way. It is really annoying. So, I always set the cruise control 2 MPH ahead of what speed I want to cruise at. I do wish they would fix this.
My nephew who makes 100k working from home drives a 2015 mazda 6 his neuro surgeon wife drives a 2018 honda accord both 28 yrs old. U cant rent a car for a day or week for a good price, it isnt 1990 anymore scotty
I just bought a used 24 Kia Soul lx with 16,000 miles that my mechanic and car fax checked out for $16,000. Deals are out there. EDIT: It’s the newest model with the reliable 2.0 liter engine built in Korea. Not the older 1.6 with problems. I’ve put 50,000 miles on a 2023 company car of the same exact make and model with zero issues. Since the day I bought my 2011 Honda accord lx new it burned exponentially more oil than either Kia has so far.

I drive two mostly-mechanical third-gen 00-02 plastic stickshift Saturns. Brakes, suspension, cooling, you can do all the important stuff yourself. Even the intake manifold gasket that was WRINKLED when they put it on at the factory. The new Ford Bronco needs a dealership-only computer to tell the car's electronics about the new headlamp assembly. My Saturn headlamp can be replaced in 10 minutes. Just the halogen capsule, or the entire assembly ! Keeping these cars as long as I can !
Scotty you know these new vehicles are absolute junk. Its just not worth it. $40k for a regular plain sedan $100k for a truck. People have to be out of their mind. Not me!
Well apparently my 82k mile 2017 Subaru sti is only worth 13k. Theyll turn around and list it for 28k, which is what i financed for in early 2021. Dealerships are way out of touch.

The frozen dumps in the rest of the country have barely functioning public transportation that covers like 15% of the city.

Banks won’t lend more on an appreciating asset like a home but will on a depreciating asset like a car. It makes zero sense.
wrong, car companies opted to focus on high value trims than economic cars because the roi on selling features is greater than selling just a car
@rotraven so if the banks did not allow the loans those cars would still be sold? Most people have to get a car loan.

Sooo, to back up what you said, I've learned this:
1. Stick to a standard maintenance schedule
2. Take 5 mins a week to check fluids and tire pressure
3. Keep a spare tire with a jack, jumper cables, motor oil, coolant, and power steering fluid in your trunk
4. Physically open the owner's manual and read it
5. Place a flat cardboard box underneath where you park so you'll know if it's ever leaking fluid
6. Have a trusted local mechanic
7. Set aside $50/month for maintenance and repairs
7. Pay attention, take your time, and don't drive stupid
8. DON'T do any aftermarket engine mods
I feel like if everyone followed this there would be no market for backup cameras, pressure sensor and traction control notifs, or really software in general beyond what's required for OBDII code readers, speedometer, fuel tank gauge, radio, and clock.
Buy a small motorcycle, they're cheap to buy, insure, maintain and fuel mileage is crazy, some over 100 mpg.
Insurance rate is simply stupid
One of the benefits of getting old is insurance rates decline, providing you haven't filed a bunch of accident claims in your past.
Just bought a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. Great condition, not a scratch on it, so back to bucket, sponge chamois leather wipe down!
Great car!
If you do your own work owning a vehicle/vehicles its not that expensive. If you have payments, full coverage insurance and have to take it to a shop for everything then yes it can be overwhelmingly expensive.
I agree i own a 2005 dodge ram and i have put 1200 worth of work in it myself now at a shop we are talking 5 grand with labor cost.
For example i was quoted 1400 to change a heater core well i done it myself for 200 bucks and yes dash had to be removed its not hard just take your time and put it back the way it came off. However i have i worked on cars since i was like 15 so easier for me
@@Michael-B41 You saved a bundle and know it was done right.
@@Michael-B41 Exactly!!
@@Michael-B41 Problem is, it's not 1999 or older and it's a Ram.
Value determined by units on the road when they buy canadas it appears more lasted and pushes up there value falsely 😢
My 2010 Grand Caravan is still in good shape and running well. Hopefully for at least another 5 to 10 years. No need to downgrade to another vehicle.
If it's got the 3.3 or 3.8 those will run forever. Ours is a 2004 with 302K and it runs great. If it's cold like close to freezing it has to warm up else it won't go into gear though.
Mechanics are cleaning up. Their work rates are the only ones that move up without control. Fixing old shitboxez for 140 an hour
Taught my son what my father and (wealthy) uncle taught me. "If you can't pay cash for a car or boat, you can not afford it. NEVER finance anything that declines in value".
This isn't 10 years ago stupid
Sounds like advice only a rich man could give. 😄
@@llegedly Use the bootstraps you havent got yet!
Certain circumstances warrant a hire purchase of a new car e.g. safety , for long distance driving to work. Other than that , pay cash only is good advice...
Very smart..
At those prices I'll never buy another new car.
And that makes everything OK? Start fighting back! When everyone stops buying prices will go down they'll have no choice

First you have to reduce the illegal population to help the supply and demand curve.
you're nephew just like me except I drive a lot 2018 Mazda 6 hahaha
I ride my e-bike more than I drive my car. In a major city, getting around on a bike is far more convenient, especially in a bike-friendly city.
809,013th RIP on Scotty's channel.
Get ready for the price of EVERYTHING goes up even more. Thanks President Cheetos
Loose the CAFE standards..
Touch free washes don’t scratch cars. If the car wash pays attention to their system they will clean cars.
Run away, those things burn oil way sooner than they should, scotty made a video about one

@@PhotographerPhilosophy just put a little thicker oil in the 1.6 thats the only issue . super reliable man
prices are high for sure but people are definitely still buying 😂 my dealership broke a unit record last month

You can always use the touch free car wash....but they don't wash that great...
Scotty you know these new vehicles are absolute junk. Its just not worth it. $40k for a regular plain sedan $100k for a truck. People have to be out of their mind. Not me!
Bought a 2000 Chevy 2500 with 96,000 miles garage kept for $6,400. It’ll last me minimum 10 years if I maintain it like it was
Well apparently my 82k mile 2017 Subaru sti is only worth 13k. Theyll turn around and list it for 28k, which is what i financed for in early 2021. Dealerships are way out of touch.
let them shut down. They eventually will.
Detail it and take it to CAR MAX.
I stick to my old 2002 Altima and 2003 Sentra. They may look beat up, but they run flawlessly and any fix is cheap as crap.
I remember the good old days when you could buy a good used car for $500 !
