Wood Turning a Catalpa Winged Bowl

- I turn this winged bowl from Catalpa. A very beautiful wood.
The bowl is emerging from a plank.
The wood was wet when I got it but it had been cut down many
years ago. I dry it by leaning it over a heat register and that worked out well.
If you are wondering about the glove on my right had at the
beginning I was putting some finish on another bowl and just
let it on. Also it was cold that morning and it was warmer with it on.

I guess I need to start another ThePapa1947 viewing marathon again. This is another video I missed last time around when I was constantly l viewing you videos.
Excellent wood turning and a unique idea to turn a bowl. The wood was turned straight out of the wood pile with no squaring of sides. That’s what makes the bowl so neat. Ya let the chips fly where they may and let them determine the beauty of the wood and bowl shape. Good one, Gary!!!
Thank you very much John. Funny thing...I have that turning sitting right in front of me. I took it off the shelf to put something else in it's place. This one might get moved out to the living room.

Yes it works good for turning but it is pretty warm to wear right now because it is a wind breaker and does not breath well.
Gary the shine in the wood grain is stunning oh it is soooooooo beautiful and satisfying to watch you all do this.

Love Catalpa. I’ve done a few carvings and currently working on one in Catalpa. The caterpillars that use the tree are great for catfish bait as well. Lol
It certainly is a very interesting wood and I bet it carves nicely.
Almost the perfect wood....good for turning carving and fish bait....I love it Long time fisherman myself.

ThePapa1947, it carved like butter with a nice sharp knife. Not quite as soft as basswood but not hard at all.

Beautiful bowl...a friend gave me a huge chuck of catalpa which I haven't turned yet because I broke my arm!

Catalpa is very pretty and I had never heard of it.
I have some pretty big pieces that I have not processed yet. No hurry they have been sitting for years and just wet from being in the rain.

We have Catalpa tress in the Charlotte, NC area where I live. They are beautiful trees with large leaves and large white blooms. I made a failed effort to grow one in my yard :( I have not had a chance too turn any. It certainly made a nice bowl.
Thank you Randy. I came across this when it was offered on something called Nextdoor which we have locally.
There was a huge tree that had been down for years and he was offering the wood. Very hard to get at and I was able to get a couple of large pieces. It is probably still laying on the ground almost covered with brush. But what I got sure is pretty.

Cut a Catalpa in my yard in Michigan years ago. I smells really good when you burn it. Now I gotta go see what is left in the wood shed, for turning LOL. Nice Vid

Wow what a transformation when you put the finish to it Gary! The figure just exploded! I love the void that goes straight through, and also how you left a good amount of wood around the bowl to really show off the grain in the "plank" section. Just a beautiful piece, expertly turned! Keep it up my friend, this was great!

Kyler thank you so much. I was pretty shocked at how the finish changed everything. I have a pretty good amount of the wood and there is more but really big pieces. If I decide more and would need my two sons to drag it out if the owner still wants it gone. But I have ran out of places to store my wood. I picked up a stack of Locust a few weeks ago. And there is a yard full of it left. I am such a wood hog.

I've been watching for felled catalpa and have always been just days too late. Only shavings left. It is beautiful wood and very much worth turning! Thank you for this video-- a piece of Norway maple is downstairs waiting for something similar to be done to it.
Thank you and it is really nice wood. There are some huge pieces left where I got this. Heavy and hard to get at. Have been laying there for years. Rotting away just like the pieces I got. I almost didn't take any it looked so bad. Just the other day I cut the test if what I did get into useable sizes. Norway maple sounds nice.

Here in southern Illinois, we have lots of catalpa. I made some walking sticks a few years ago, using 1.5"-2" saplings. When I peeled the bark, the wood was snow white. Within an hour, it turned almost black. After sanding, they were really beautiful. Very light weight also.

Thank you Mark, it is indeed a beautiful wood. I sure am glad I was able to get some. The wood was rotted out down the center but there is lots of solid wood around it.

Mark Tindall , yes, Catalpa is very lightweight. We have Catalpa here in Arkansas as well, and I’ve enjoyed hand carving it. Beautiful grain inside.
The stuff I got had been in the weather for years so not sure how it may have affected it. I like it a lot no matter if it did or not.

Beautiful wood, Gary! Reminds me of Ash, at least the grain does. Probably not as hard. I love the design and it finished beautifully. Another great job, buddy! Keep'em coming!

Thanks Phil and yes it is a bit soft. As soon as I saw that big crack I figured you might like it. I sure did. At first when the knot fell out I thought oh dang....but then hey that is going to be nice.
I spent the last 3 days trying to fix my main computer so I didn't have time to turn what I wanted to. And I use to love working on and building them. Now I just want them to work. But it runs faster now. I put a solid state hard drive in it.
But I picked up some Locust just a few streets down from us and have a small bowl turned from it. Just wanted to see what the wood looked like. Even though they just cut it down not long ago.

We had a Catalpa tree in our front yard that we cut down well before I found wood turning!Wish I was turning back then! It stunk something awful when it was cut!I was almost gagging from the smell! Terrible odor but as you've shown,beautiful grain!

The piece he was able to pull out looked so bad I almost didn't want it. Sure glad I did. It tears out easy so extra sharp tools are needed. But they are always needed. No strong odors but it has been down a long time.

I've seen catalpa trees my whole life seeing as how catalpa worms are great fish bait, but this is the first video I've seen of someone turning it. I was starting to wonder if there was something wrong with it.
@@myname4598 nothing that I can find. One of the prettiest and unusual wood I have seen.

@@myname4598 I don't think there is anything wrong with except it's odor when cutting it when it's green!
It grows around where I live. I turn it regularly. As you probably know, it has a very open grain. I’ll sometimes use a fine gold flake as a filler. It can be very subtle but pops in the sunlight. Good job!
Yes it sure does have an open grain but a very pretty open grain. At least this piece. I am looking forward to turning more of what I picked up.
Great tip on the gold flake I just might have to try that.

I tell you when I see how the beauty shows up especially when applying the finish it is hard for me not to get excited. I have always loved wood and feel as it this was rescued from turning into mulch in a few years.

If it's worth turning? Obviously it is. Turn some more, this is a beautiful bowl. Maybe you should have poured a cup of coffee in the bowl. Then it would have come alive. Just got my first cup. Now I'm breathing. Have a wonderful day.
Thank you Richard. I have turned one other Catalpa bowl and I have a lot more. Some big pieces I need to decide how to cut them down. The guy that gave it to me had a whole tree that had been cut down many years ago. So some had a lot of rot down the center but I will get something out of it. I have been meaning to pull some more out.

Thank you very much Steve. I worked as wood pattern maker. Making patterns for industrial castings.
Yes there was lot of mathematics involved in building patterns. I built 3D shapes to match 2D drawings.

Another beautiful piece Gary. The grain and chatoyance are spectacular. I'm glad I found your channel. How did it sand? I noticed a lot of fuzz from the tools.
It sands pretty easy and it also tears out fairly easy as well. It looks a lot harder than it really is. I think something with a continuous cut would work with less issues but overall it is a fun wood to turn. The wood I got sat around outside for years so perhaps fresh cut might act differently.

@@ThePapa1947 Catalpa trees are fairly common here in Ohio. When I was young, we called it a cigar tree because of the hanging seed pods.
@@williamellis8993 That is interesting. I had never heard of it although maybe we have more here in Oregon. I will have to see what the tree looks like and then watch for one. We certainly have plenty of trees here. I picked up some Locust just a short distance from our place and Locust is not all that common here. Sure is pretty wood though.

@@ThePapa1947 Locust is also fairly common here. Farmers use it for fence posts because of its rot resistance.
people collect worms of those trees for fishing
