I wholeheartedly agree that the training does not prepare you to work with most clients. I naturally started using a less sensitive target in order to help the client feel more comfortable with the process, but I did not consider all of the information that I am gathering when I do this. Thank you for making that explicit!

So true, Developmental trauma/complex trauma needs more flexibility beyond basic training information in planning out case conceptualization. Thank you for voicing this!

This was awesome! I love the way that you explained that you’re not taking clients out and just throwing them in the water without teaching them how to tread water first. That is exactly how I explain EMDR to my clients. When I explain to them what resourcing is and how we’re going to get them ready for the tough parts of the protocol. I always say I’m not going to take you out to deep waters and just let you go. I’m going to teach you how to tread water first, I’m going to make sure you have life jackets and other items so that you can feel safe. I actually had already been doing EMDR on what I call “mini targets” first before we go to THE target with clients. Partly because of my own anxiety around the protocol as a new EMDR therapist and also because I really want to keep my clients safe. Who knew that I have been doing the right thing all along! Thank you for the affirmation and also for recognizing the anxiety that many new EMDR therapists experience.

I love this idea!! And it actually really confirms and validates that this doesn't have to be such a rigid process and that our clinical judgement is still important. Before even watching this, I was thinking of doing something similar for certain clients - where we would choose a less triggering event to start with just to get a feel for what it's like. I know that getting to the core memories will be powerful, but neither the client nor myself as the clinician is ready for that yet. I also use the water analogy to help clients understand we're going to take it slow. Thank you for sharing this!

Kambria, do you have a script as part of the information that you send out once we sign up for your bundle?

Hi, Beverly! I'm so glad this resonated with you. I don't offer my basic training script in the bundle since its copyrighted material, but I do offer lots of my favorite clinical resources and my "playlists" for resourcing.
