I saw this on Disney and thought it wasn’t bad. Then saw my first episode of Quantum Leap and said, “Hey! It’s the guy from I-Man!”
Brilliant
I would pay to see the non-existent episode of this failed series where Scott Bakula's starfish regeneration powers result in the creation of an evil Bakula twin. You just know he'd pop up every now and then in the series, with his own evil theme music, probably wearing a sinister black leather jacket.
I've spent longer than I should thinking about that concept, too. Like at some point in the show during a really hopeless confrontation, I-Man's head is cut off and thrown into the ocean, or detached in some other way that they could never retrieve it, so they think he's really dead. But of course, in the thrilling climax we discover his head did grow back and he saves the day. For a few episodes there's some debate over how the hell he came back from that (maybe he's missing a few memories or gets mixed up) but eventually it's all but forgotten until a grizzled, evil doppelganger of I-Man shows up being all evil.
When they finally confront him, we get this big reveal that he's the head that got chopped off, enduring unimaginable torture as he fought to regrow his body and crawl his way back to civilization, only to find out he's had his life stolen from him by a freak abomination. Obviously going through all that twisted his mind to evil, but the saga brings up philosophical questions about which is the real I-Man, what he might become in different circumstances, and what makes one better than the other.
Eventually of course, since this is cheesy 80's Disney, those questions would be kind of brushed aside by the resolution. The good I-Man is the real one, because even though his head was gone, it's what was in his heart that made him who he was. Die-Man is destroyed in some irreversible way or else turned to the side of good, and this concept goes on for four more seasons of trying to find new ways to get Scott Bakula injured. It could've been something, but I don't think it'd be worth losing out on what we got.
I can just see the cliffhanger ending where the decapitated head, sinking into the ocean, suddenly opens its eyes on a freeze-frame.

One of my favorite bits is not so much Bakula himself when he gets shot at the convenience store, but the way the store's clerk does a ninety degree pivot with his hands still up.
I just noticed that. He doesn't even turn to react to Bakula, like he's not even looking at him. He just pivots to reveal there's a robber in front of him. This staging is top notch Disney magic
I'm just picturing someone at a video store looking for a copy of Ip Man and accidentally picking out this one.

"Cannister" is a perfectly acceptable--albeit obsolete--alternate spelling of the word.
What if the Doctor Claw action figure, was originally made as an attempted toy line for I-Man? When it went nowhere,they added a cat, made some slight changes, and released it as DC.
Similar things have happened, He-Man was originally supposed to be a toy line for the 1980s Conan the Barbarian, but when the movie was released with an R rating, Mattel had to do some backflips to recover from what would have been a multi million dollar toy tie in failure. You can still see that today, in the original He-Man sword's shape.

I'll never get over how much young Scott Bakula looked like mid-'70s Keith Moon from some angles. He had a very similar voice too then, just with an American accent. Listen to some interviews with Keith - if Scott Bakula could do Moon's weird mixed accent of north-western Londoner and affected arrogant aristocrat, he could imitate him.

I-Man makes me want to say Oh man... here we go again.
So, after watching this, I realized that this is the exact super power of Mr. Invincible from the Great Lake Avengers. His only power is to keep coming back to life. So, most of the time, he runs into battle, gets shot, the bad guys get away. Sometimes, he's just used as a bullet shield.
I-Man walking out of the hospital without being stopped is kinda believable. I live in Houston and, something similar happened with my Aunt Maria. She had a heart attack while driving down the road outside my house and crashed into a tree. She was taken to the hospital but didn't regain consciousness until the next day. When she woke up she had no memory of what happened and was still loopy from her concussion so, she just stood up and left the hospital. The doctors made a weak effort to stop her but didn't physically intervene and, she left without doing any paperwork. Family had come to visit my Aunt while she was in the hospital but had left to go to work before she became conscious so, there was no family there to stop her from attempting to leave. She eventually returned to the hospital after regaining some more of her senses. Because her phone was broken and her car was totaled from the crash, she couldn't wonder to far from the hospital anyway. My family didn't find out that she left while barely in control of her senses and came back until my mother came to visit her after work, and we were not happy about the hospital's handling of the situation (but in hindsight I suppose it's not much they could've done). This happened at the Memorial Hermann in Sugar Land (which is right on the outskirts of Houston proper). I'm not sure if other hospital's in other cities handle this differently but I can tell you it's at least somewhat believable.

A true classic Movie Nights episode that has become a yearly watch. I just love the fact that this episode is 2/3 the length the movie it's about. There's more passion here than in the actual film. :D

I saw I-man on tv many years ago. A couples times, too. As a kid I kinda liked it. Its good to see a review of this.
36:40 - "Because it's there" is a famous quote from mountain climber George Mallory when he was asked why he wanted to climb Mt. Everest. The tallest mountain in the world, which had never been climbed at the time he said this line.
However... it doesn't make as much sense when applied to blowing up some random bridge somewhere. A lot of things are "there"... does this man just wake up in the morning, see his toaster and decide to blow it up? Does he go to put on his shoes and decide to demolish his feet? (If so, I would definitely watch that movie, BTW) 😏

I think the quote about "because it's there" (36:42) is the quote about climbing mountains. Why? Because they're there. It equally makes no sense in context of the movie and everything you say still works but it doesn't quiet fit with the famous Alexander quote about weeping because there was nowhere left to conquer.

I saw this on the Disney channel when it first aired...I wanted to see the series. Though given a choice between it and Quantum Leap, I'm glad it worked out as it did.

Not gonna lie. The concept of a sorta "meh" sorta guy, a sorta incredibly average type of guy, getting invincibility powers and not being able to die would be a kinda awesome super hero comic??? Like maybe make the regeneration a bit quicker? maybe ten-fifteen seconds. Enough to do the damage and then quickly back to full health and he can slop his way to being a kinda effective hero?
Marvel did exactly that with Mister Immortal. He even led the Avengers. Well, the Great Lakes Avengers.
DC comics had Resurrection Man who after he dies comes back to life with a different power each time.
If you want to see a series about a man becoming invincible and becoming a hero, check out 1967's Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. It's from Gerry Anderson, the guy who did Thunderbirds, and is in the same style of marionettes and model sets. It's also surprisingly dark for a 60s puppet show. It got a CGI reboot in 2005 as New Captain Scarlet.
