    I have the GMRS version (I just ordered the ham version), and it's a pretty solid radio. it's basically an evolved waterproof form of the GM-15 and GM-30. But with a quick release radio mounted swivel clip, almost twice the battery, and you have to use Chirp because the watered down Radioddity program doesn't work. Confirming that it is a different chipset with the same menu. The starter kits the GMRS version comes with are pretty nice, especially the holster that you'll need when using the Abbree antenna the kit comes with, since it's top heavy, and the swivel clip no longer works unless you tuck the antenna under something. It would be nice to see them offer similar starter kits with the ham version. Even though Abbree antennas aren't expensive, and double AR mag pouches fit most handhelds nicely.

    Have you looked at the new UV17? Im kinda curious about the difference between it and this new UV9R other than memory channels.
    This UV9R seems like a great upgrade from the 5R or S9+, especially with the built-in USB-C charging which would allow you to ditch any proprietary charging cables. Additionally it looks like you can use your same CHIRP programming tables, but you do need a different programming cable.

    • @TheSmokinApe

      Yeah, I need to get the new cable. I haven’t tried the 17 yet.

      I bought an s9+ just for the USB-C port and it's supposed to carry 220 MHz band but I cannot get any of the CHIRP to program the 220 (1.25 meter band) it even came with an extra 220MHz antenna.... but even with all of the work-arounds for programming that band- no dice. have you been able to do so? my friend has the same radio but his acts like mine. I cannot find it on their website. Baofeng USA told me that it's counterfeit!? really weird. I really liked the fact that I could charge from USB-C. 73

    • @davidhawkins847
      @davidhawkins847 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@l.a.2646
      Hmm, doesn't sound like an S9+ to me, though there is a Tri-band version of it available on Amazon. The S9+ batteries don't use direct USB to USB charging that I've seen. They use the USB to barrel connector. The same one used for the add on battery available for the UV-5R. Can you manually program the radio in the 1.25m range? It's probably not CHIRP since it doesn't care what you put in for programming, or if it is, it may be the radio profile you're using.
      It's possible there is a direct USB battery available for the S9+, but I haven't seen one and would like to get my hands on it. That would allow me use only commonly available cords for charging devices which are much easier to find in an emergency. Right now, I have my electronics kit down to only the one proprietary (kinda) cord that I need to carry. All other common connections have adapters available for Type-C cables.
      Because my focus is emergency preparedness, the less unique cables I need to keep on hand the better. The main difference I see for upgrading to the 9R/pro is simply for the battery charging convenience of being a direct USB-C connection. The additional changes I can see, whether good or bad has yet to be determined, are the battery size, the belt clip, and the overall change in buttons and operation. Plus I would need to buy all new accessories to support it since none of the UV-5R/UV-S9+ equipment would work.

    • @davidhawkins847
      @davidhawkins847 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSmokinApe I'm kind of surprised at the location of the charging port on these new batteries. I think it would be nicer if it was on the side like the older barrel connection. That would let you keep it plugged in, in a pouch, for continuous charging much easier than stuck in the back like that.

    Does your UV-9RPro play the FM radio okay? I have two UV-9RPlus and both have a pst...pst...pst at regular intervals. I have to grab another radio to listen to FM. I ordered another one months ago and it didn't have any FM at all. The seller told me that because of an FM chip shortage at the time it was manufactured. So I assume it was because of this annoying issue. This is a newer iteration so I don't know if the problem is still there.

    • @djmblades4124
      @djmblades4124 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had 2 from the same seller as the one being tested and both had FM.
      However, they both had this same quirk. FM and NOAA both received fine out of the box.
      But once frequencies were added through Chirp, all reception that worked previously ceased to exist.
      Hard reset radio, would receive FM and NOAA again.
      Amazon deleted my review, or the seller Abbree did, but other reviews describe the exact problem I said.

      @@djmblades4124 » Sellers aren't allowed to remove reviews from Amazon, but they can appeal to Amazon and Amazon almost never removes reviews excerpt for profanity. More than likely it was an error in saving the review. This has happened to me several times. I write a review, then it just vanishes. And sometimes they're favorable reviews. It's aggravating. I write my reviews on a word processing program and copy and paste them. That way, if they vanish, I can paste them again. Amazon used to let people post replies to reviews. It was very, very useful, but then it stopped.

      Returned both 9R and got the Tidradio TD-H8.(been stalking your vids on the H8😂)
      I'd be curious if your 9R goes deaf after using Chirp.
      It does give a warning that it's a Beta driver.
      You can always reset the 9R through the radio menu and then it can hear again.
      I was baffled on both, so parted company with them.
      Interestingly enough, I did the exact same programming on a 5R to see what happens. That one could hear perfectly afterwards.
      I only use the 5R to monitor channels, FM and NOAA Weather.
      Made me sad😢 about my 2 9R, cause they seems well constructed.

      @@djmblades4124 » The H8 has a great rep and it's a true 10W+ radio that has very good sound. The most powerful radio I have is the Radtel RT-470. It put out 12-13 watts (VHF) and 11 watts UHF. For most uses I set it on MEDIUM. The thing is a powerhouse and a lot of people like it. It has a beautiful color display and it has good sound, too.
      I wish someone would do some range tests with 10W radios to find out if 10 watts actually gives you a boost in range over 4.5 watts (which most Baofeng radios put out). Establish the maximum range of the 5W radio, then see if 10W will give you a boost. Five watt radios will give you a good range, but will 10 watts give you a better range? I really don't know.

    First Hayden showed a clean model of Baofeng and now this one. Could they be transitioning to only making spectrally clean radios? My world view has been shaken.

    Sounds like a UV-82HP guts.The same way to change from channel,to frequency mode.Turning it off and hold the button.What a pain.

      Yeah, I don't like that it works like that. I've seen a few radios that do it but a seperate button would be so much easier.

    • @Nick-zo5dp
      @Nick-zo5dp ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not fake news I just want someone to prove it’s worse or better than any other radio. You test everything else so why not test too see if you can overload it instead of stating stuff others say without proving it.

    I have owned the UV-9R-Pro since 2020; when the "Mysterious Chip Shortage" was happening, so I ended up with two of them that were basically the as atypical UV-5R but without the Broadcast FM missing. Later on when this "Chip Shortage" ended, the UV-9Rs (Not just the Pro) that now has FM Radio.
    Otherwise, despite the quirks you stated, I find it to be an Alright radio. I keep it to the side when I need to use it in severe weather, otherwise I have my UV-5R at my side.

    Dealers also sell these devices in large quantities to people who do not have an amateur radio license. They then transmit in the PMR band (446 MHz), where only 0.5 watts are permitted in our country. Hi Ape.

    Mine came with near ZERO instructions. Just a "mini-manual" that was nearly USELESS!
    If I didn't already have a passing aquatance with these cheap Chinese beauties, it would have ended up on the trash heap. Why doesnt Baofang put a USEABLE MANUAL in every box. 🤔 it's ridiculous to have to spend a full hour just programming ONE LOCAL REPEATER INTO IT.
    Honestly I can't recommend these to any new ham. The manuals provided with every Yaesu I've bought for the last 30 years have been TOP NOTCH.
