What's the greatest thing about sailing on a hospital ship? IDK exactly, but the symbol painted on it is a huge plus.
I could be wrong but I heard that German subs did occasionally target hospital ships. Basically it was the captain's call.

Also, at 9:00 the surprise destroyer reminded me of a funny occasion that happened to me when I was showing my friend the game.
A destroyer leapt at me suddenly. I yelled "Crap! How did it get here?"

Watching that destroyer kill at 11:45 was soooooo satisfying.
The lead of the J.C. Butler Class was commissioned 31 March 1944, that was a brand new destroyer escort.
I'd put the money into homing torpedoes for your rear tubes ALL the time. Forward tubes offensive, rear tubes defensive unless something really special is spotted. And the homers give you evidently pretty decent odds of killing DDs and DEs
Gotta say I jumped on my chair and laughed when you got that destroyer. This series is just so good.

@Schnappi der Übermensch I think the game just doesn't have a modding community as big as on SH3. Easier to stick to SH3 and make mods for it than switch to a completely different game :/

Recent Subscriber, hello from Australia. I'm pumped for the Type XXI, I'm interested in it but never really seen it in action. If it costs too much renown though I for one wouldn't mind if you added in the cash via game files, unless you can earn enough before game's end. Thanks for the entertaining content!
You can edit the amount of renown earned for certain actions and the amount of time spent in dock between patrols. You could change downtime to say 3 days if you use SH3 Commander. View this tread to learn about SH3 Commander.

Some argue 42 rather than 28 days between patrols is more accurate.
It does feel a bit weird that command refuses to give their incredible 600k tonnage ace the best boat around, a new series would be neat but I reckon a Type 21 would be handy going into 1944.
Great to see the homing torpedo finally used. Perfect result! Revenge is sweet! Bit unlucky with the convoy though, couldn’t see the biggest ships in the fog.
I agree with your decision to skip the Type XXI this series - realistically there’s no way you’ll reach 20,000 renown before the end of the war. It would be better to do it as a separate series of its own.
The price of 20,000 renown for the Type XXI seems to be set up to reward commanders who stick with the same boat throughout their career up until 1945, and are also frugal on upgrades. Whereas you are on your second boat already, and have bought just about every upgrade going.
Here’s another idea for the end of this series though - download the Type XXIII mod that replaces the Type XXI in GWX, edit your renown to acquire it, and do 1 patrol in that right at the end of the war, in April 1945.
The tiny coastal Type XXIII only carried 2 torpedoes, but historically it was the last U-boat to sink an Allied ship in May 1945. (The Type XXI never sank anything as it entered service too late.)

-Glad to hear that you're beginning to appreciate poor weather. Fog = No aircraft (#1 killer of subs int he late game). Rain = poor radar. Heavy seas = crap-tastic sonar. Night = merchants unable to spot.
If you notice, the escort stopped and turned on it's searchlights. That means two things
1. It can't use sonar (rough seas).
2. It doesn't know where you are.
While you're the skipper of the boat, my philosophy is "You leave me alone, I leave you alone." I save those homing fish for when I have three escorts "pinging" and two on a depth charge run (common in the late game). Then, I launch the homing fish and kick the mule in the ass. At the explosion, I change course, wait 60 secs, then standard to slow depending on the reaction. Most of the time it'll successfully break contact.
Another tip:
@33:30 You compress time in the hopes of spotting better targets. When you're that close, ALWAYS drop scope before compressing time. Very bad things can happen if you don't...especially when closing the distance. Then raise scope once you return to 1x1 time.
IMHO -Decoys are only effective if you're being pinged. Otherwise, they serve no purpose. Silent running is best used for setting up the initial attack. Heavy seas makes sonar ineffective.

I think I know what happened with the destroyer at 11:45. The front fell off. Great kill. That homing torpedo was a godsend. Whoever designed that thing deserves an Iron Cross

I once sunk a hospital ship, it was very dark and I didn't see the cross before I fired, but realized it right before impact. Went down like a sack of bricks. I expected big trouble on my return, but was awarded the knights cross instead.
That destroyer hit was way too satisfying to watch. Good job, Wolf, and keep on keeping on.

That torpedo kill of the Destroyer at 12:00 ish was the most satisfying kill of the whole series. Imagine how good it would feel at this late stage of the war to be fighting back a little bit. Good video.

I think what you could do is upgrade this boat, and then by March / April 1945 if you survive get the extra renown via game files to at least make a single Type XXI patrol to end the war with it.

The way that destroyer disintegrated was golden, shame their tonnage is so small as they can be tricky to hit what with their high speeds & zig zagging.

I would not mind you editing your renown to get the XXI. You're the top submarine ace in the whole Kriegsmarine by a very large margin, of course they'd give you one! Great episode as always.

You need.......14 homing torps. Forget the merchants.
You really should get more bold about lying in wait in front of convoys. The escorts really don't ping that often unless they hear your engines, which if you're crawling along at 1 knot directly in their path, they basically never do.
Also another tip. If a convoy is spotted and you plot their course but your plot is off a bit when BDU updates you, you should draw a line from the last spotting to the new one. Then you'll have their exact course and you can basically choose which side of the convoy you want to be on, it's that accurate.
GL with the career! I got my type xxi and made such a mockery of a late 44 convoy that I got bored of the game lol

Yo Wolfy, i've been following the series for quite a long time , i've installed all the following mods to play SH3 just like u but, my game keeps crashing...how did u deal with that?
That point of not attacking a Hospital Ship is a wise choice. These are carrying wounded service personnel or in some instances - refugees. To sink one of these is a war crime. So you won't be tried as a war criminal because you don't have a great connection with the Nazi regime.
