- In this video I'll share my nine best knitting tips to save money on yarn and knitting supplies!
While knitting isn't the most expensive hobby, the cost of yarns, needles and patterns can add up! In this video, I'll share my favourite tips for cutting down on costs.
Many tips use everyday objects, making them super easy to do. Others require a bit more effort, but the results are excellent (if I do say so myself!)

Library employee hack! If you have a kindle that you don't mind being offline, download the book, then toss that bad boy into airplane mode! This will stop the book from leaving your kindle, but it won't affect the next person in line, or the due date! Great for if you travel, or if you just need more time than the download allows!

Lol! When I was 12 I found a knitting book-can’t recall where. I literally grabbed a pair of pencils and someone’s yellow yarn, sat on the porch steps, and laboriously learned to knit. I didn’t know about using the nail polish so I had a grimy hot pad. Thanks for bringing back that memory; I’m 75 now, still knitting.

I bought kits from the craft store, came home and my Grandma was like “nah, lemme teach you to crochet,” and she did.
I’m 41 now. Been crocheting for 24 years thanks to her and taught myself to knit off of videos and books.
Taught myself to read patterns after over 20 years though. So now I can make MUCH more elaborate things than before. ❤

I’ve tried all of your tips before! Coloring yarn with good color or Kool Aid packets is fun to do with children! I’ve done it with my grandchildren and they took home their own hand dyed balls of yarn! They can knit, crochet or weave projects with it! Making memories!
That last hack about sleeping before buying your yarn is good advice!! I love looking at all the beautiful yarn and am so tempted to buy so many different colors with no project in mind!!!

You’re welcome! Yes dying with food coloring is dead easy! Using professional dyes is a bit more complicated but the color tends to “stick” better

I’ve used the pencil trick before. I was at the car dealership waiting for my car and I forgot to bring my needles. They lent me two pencils and away I went.

Goodwill and other thrift stores often have supplies and yarns for much cheaper than craft stores.
Yes! And they are usually in packs. I bought 3 actually quite big balls of yarn for like 3$. Just made a sweater using one of the yarns.

Huge pro-tip that I give everyone: I love JOANN more than Michaels, but Michaels is in my town. And Michaels very rarely has good yarn sales compared to JOANN. But Michaels has a price match policy where they'll match another eligible retailer's price PLUS they'll add an extra 10% (not on doorbuster or clearance items). So when yarn is on sale at another retailer, head to Michaels if you know that they carry the same yarn!

We've been watching your vids for a few weeks now and sharing with family and friends. As we're a crafting family. Many are seasoned knitters, others taking it up for the very first time. Your tutorials are the BEST. Great demos and step by step instructions that are so easy to follow. Your calming voice and patience (implied) with each step (done once or 4 times), SO appreciated. My husband has just taken up knitting for the first time and has just completed a beautiful chunky scarf for me based on your tutorials.
Had a chuckle with this video though. Learned for the first time you're in Vancouver. We just moved from Vancouver (last January) to Melbourne to be close to family...especially the older folks who are getting on in years. But your last tip made me burst out laughing. SO me at Dressew on Hastings. Literally could spend a day there buying so much I'd never use. I have so many sewing projects on the go. However, yes...great tip, but here's an extra one. As you say...Go with a plan, write it down...but always know you're gonna see something on sale you never knew you needed. Set an extra budget of 20-50 bucks for "extras". Dressew's bargain bins are all over the store. Reaching down into it is like a grab bag. Remnants, remaining odds and sods of discontinued items, yarn available at a low cost as it's at the end of the run. If I'm even between projects and just wanting some inspiration, reaching into one of these bins does the trick.
So LOVE and miss this store, but I'm sure I'll find something similar here. Just have to find it.

What great ideas. I had no idea about the library and I checked if there was a group in my town and there IS! I would love to hang out with some like minded people and enjoy the company. Hi. Hello. Howdy. Thank you for sharing. Often also take a list or walk around the store and think about the purchase. Like I see something I like or need then I might put it in my cart then look around while thinking about it. This helps me a lot. I hope this makes sense.

Once I lost my knitting needles (back when I only knew how to garter stitch) and my dad put some chopsticks in the pencil sharpener and it worked really well

I’ve been crocheting for over 20 yrs and I still consider myself a beginner who can do some intermediate stitches.

These tips are so great! I learned to knit as a 2nd grader in 1968. My skills never really advanced, but I've always had fun making scarfs for friends using bulky yarn. The upcycling tip is really great and I'll be looking around for those opportunities. Until then, I'll be going over your videos for ideas!

When you roll up the hank in a ball of yarn I suggest doing it around a fairly thick pen. you can let a little piece of yarn dangling out and start rolling the rest up, so you end up with a neater ball and you have a center pull!

I've been buying my own bare yarn from knitpicks and dyeing it myself for around 4 years. I've saved a lot of money this way, except I use commercial acid dyes.
That’s excellent! Yes acid dyes are a lot better in terms of colorfast-ness!

Oh my gosh! I didn’t know dying yarn was so easy!!! What a life changer!!
Please tell me if the yarn is washable or if I should be concerned about colors running. Id hate to buy a bunch of white yarn just to find I’ve dyed it and it runs! 😱
As a new crocheter I’ve spent countless hours online searching for a certain color of wool yarn I’ve envisioned for my project. Sometimes I sat for weeks, project unable to go forward because I couldn’t find the right color yarn anywhere. Or worse yet, I’d settle for a color I didn’t really want, then spend hours ripping out some of the work I did because I really can’t stand to compromise when I have a talent for using color.
I’ve been dying (pun intended 🤣) to use my more mature skills of art and color blending knowledge to make my own colors of yarn needed for my projects but never thought I could be side the colors might wash out or run.
I pray you will say they won’t run and I can start a WHOE NEW beautiful adventure dying my OWN yarn! 🙏🏼

I’m glad you’re excited about dyeing with food coloring! Food coloring is not as washfast or lightfast as professional acid dyes, but it does stick well. Just wash the yarn in cool water and let it dry naturally. Keep out of direct sunlight if you’d like to preserve the color as best as possible. Good luck!
I'm not a knitter, i crochet, but these hacks work great for crochet, too.
I love dyeing my own yarn I usually use fresh or frozen fruits juice and use plant base yarn or acrylic and it works well.

That's so perfect! My mother-in-law gave me two small skeins of 8-ply cotton yarn for Christmas, which is way thicker than I would use for small projects (which is all I can do with that amount). I'm thinking of transforming them into four balls of 4-ply yarn, doubling the length per gram and seeing what I can do with that. Probably some cotton socks for spring.

As a beginner I learnt using refills of ball point pen, it worked really well 👍
Another good reason to join a fiber group is some of them will have demo days where you can learn how to do things, including dying yarn/fiber.

I learn how to knit through youtube and use a pair of random skewers. It breaks a lot, because the yarn that I used back then is also a random yarn from my father's garden. But I managed to make a coaster with that. Now when I can buy my own needle and yarn, I became impulsif with that. And decided to only buy new yarn when I really don't have any yarn left. So I push myself to make anything with available yarn.

Knitting/substituting with cheaper yarn of the same weight and texture, is a good way to save money. There is so much nice cheap yarn, as well as expencive yarn out there. A small tip from a norwegian knitter🌞

Y'all have such an amazing variety of yarn and other knitting supplies in your country 😭 I was so excited to start off my knitting projects. But for WEEKS I haven't found good quality needles and yarn. And all the good stuff is so ridiculously expensive 😫😔

I actually use chicken skewers as knitting needles but I do have knitting needles of my own. I also use skewers as Double-Pointed Needles by sanding the other end of the skewers, it's not the best but I still use it.

This is one of the most useful and fun videos you've done! I have bookmarked Ravelry (great name!) but I haven't taken advantage of it yet! I hope it works internationally?
if you dont want to use food coloring you could use basically anythin from the nature. just take some berries (blue berries for example) or leaves etc and boil it with the yarn. this is perfect if you'd like to do this process in nature as well. plus its free.
This trick is old but gold but for very fine sweaters, tees, jeans (basically store bought garments) you can also turn it into yarn by cutting them in strips of preferred thickness , tie them together and wind it into a ball.

i am just now getting into knitting at 18 years old and i love your videos and techniques! but i have a 4 month baby and i really wanna make him little socks or hats! is there anyway you can demonstrate that? everyone else on youtube doesn’t make it look easy for beginners 😅
To get a washed hank to dry faster, I park my car in the sun (in my driveway), lay the hank on a towel on the seat, & keep the windows rolled up so it gets hot inside the car. Due to my climate, it can take days to dry indoors & the car dries it much faster.
That’s such a great tip!
Some great tips, but food coloring won't actually dye your wool. It will just stain it, and that stain will gradually lighten or disappear as your yarn / garment is exposed to the sun and washed.
If you really want to dye wool (or cotton/linen/silk), even with natural materials, it is most likely more expensive than buying commercially dyed yarn. But it is a lot of fun and a great creative process in itself!
This is a good point! Food colouring isn’t very color fast, but for very casual dyers who don’t want to spend a lot of money on new pots and pans, it’s an easy way to get started. Natural dyes sounds like a lot of fun too!
Even cheaper to buy Easter egg dyes marked down after the holiday to use to dye yarns. I bought a “mystery bag” of 100% silk DK for CHEAP that is wonderful in every way except the uninspiring yellow color. I’m planning to see how much blue it will take up to turn it green. So if there’s a yarn on sale that’s nice except for its color, and the color is light, consider over-dying it.

Such a good video, Davina! The last message about mindfulness when buying yarn struck me as especially salient. I’ve been on a yarn buying spree since I’ve started knitting a year ago. I now have a room full of yarn that might take me 10 years to get through…eek! I have one question, some people talk about doubling or tripling strands of the same yarn, I am assuming from the same hank or ball. How would one do this? Do I unwind the entire hank/ball first? And then what? It sounds like a scary prospect that could potentially lead to yarn vomit. Ive thought though this and can’t figure out how this is done. I’m probably going to feel dumb when someone finally explains it to me. Thanks again for the very cool video!
Oh I feel you so hard on having a yarn board. I have boxes and boxes of yarn that I still need to get through! 🤦♀️ have you considered selling them on Ravelry or swapping them at a swap meet? That could help with reducing numbers, but I also understand how hard it is to part with yarn you love!
As for knitting with multiple strands, if you have two balls then just hold those two strands together. If you have a skein you can fish out the two ends from either side and hold them together to knit. If you only have a ball or Hank, then you’d need to roll them into separate balls that are approximately the same size. Hope that helps!
