Very helpful video! Actually there is another way to deal with a swatch that doesn't fit the gauge, but I think I am the only person who ever does it because no one ever likes calculating but... I divide the stitches and rows from author's gauge, and my own, and then I adjust the actual knitting pattern to fit my gauge. I've knitted a sweater by recalibrating the numbers of stitches and rows needed, and to be honest I don't do it any other way, just too much work... Math is much faster in my opinion!
Yes, I have learned recently how to do the calculations as well. I’m definitely using this method from now on! Ideally we should have gauge close to the pattern but knowing how to calculate the difference gives me the freedom to choose any yarn I want without fear of getting it wrong,
@@laurenevivieros4187 there are several videos in TH-cam explaining how to do this. Don’t be afraid of making calculation, is not that difficult and once you get it there is no turning back!
I always have to make block of 20 or 30 otherwise I miss 1 or 2 and the. Not sur if I miss on or if it’s a real mistake. Counting it’s the things taking the most of my time in the beginning
Thank you so much for this video, I owe you my life, my yearly crops, my stylish properties, my firstborn. (I am a broke childless pebble but I said "I owe", not "I am able to produce", so legally I should be fine.)
Omg thank you. I’ve been ignoring gauge measurements for the last 2 years because I be here knitting scarves and blankets for myself so literally didn’t care hahaha. My horizons have expanded, thanks to you! 😍
Finally that portion of the label of the yarn makes sense😂 I’m a new knitter who just finished my first project (yes, scarf😂 ). I had resigned myself to sticking with “safe” projects until I saw this. A girl has hope now🤞🏾
I've wanted to learn to knit for as long as i can remember. Even took a class. YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT I HAVE ACTUALLY LEARNED FROM. Youre amazing. You make everything so crystal clear. I love you
I’m genuinely surprised that this video was 30 minutes long! I can usually never finish a knitting video because I just kinda get lost in all the words and distracted looking at the pretty yarn. I didn’t feel like it was dragging on and on or too quick. YOU HAD MY ATTENTION FOR ALL OF THE 30:23! Your amazing at explaining and teaching 💕
I have watched many videos on knitting (I've just picked up knitting again after many years). Most of the videos were informative, but they were dry and unimaginative. I came across your video on gauge, and I have to say I was absolutely delighted! I am 63 years young and so definitely NOT a millennial. But your creative and imaginative approach to your videos not only informed me, but also kept me entertained and glued to the screen! Well done, Sheep and Stitch! Well done, indeed.
"Block your swatch" should definitely be an expression. Like tying up loose ends. Or perhaps to describe someone who's uptight, as in, "she blocks her swatches, if you know what I mean". 😂
"She blocks her swatches.." Too funny - my rule is if you are going to block the finished product than block the swatch. If not, then don't. But then I am a huge fan of the KISS principle.
I have been crocheting since I was a teen and recently picked up knitting. I have literally never understood gauge until this video, thank you so much for explaining/demonstrating it and the troubleshooting to go with it in an easy way to understand! I have avoided making anything where it would matter all this time! Now I have the skill if I want to try a wearable project! Thanks again!
There is something about your voice and the way you explain everything, Thank you for your hard work, I have learned so much in the last 24hrs, you are an awesome teacher.
I ignore all the yarn recommendations. Cuz usually they are expensive yarn I don’t want to buy. Whatever the gauge is never be the problem. Simply do some math, multiply or divide. Such as the pattern gauge is 20 by 20, my yarn gauge is 25 by 24, just multiply the stitch number. 25 /20 =1.25, so all the stitch number multiply by 1.25. And the row number is easy, just use the measure tape to achieve the length as pattern shown.
You made a very dry, dreaded topic so much fun and easy to understand! I have made too many sweaters that didn’t fit properly because I didn't swatch. Now making one for myself with more expensive yarn, taking the time to swatch and block!!
Just a note: different fibers react differently to blocking. Superwash tends to actually *lengthen* and stretch downwards - quite a lot - so I learned the hard way to always block my swatches if I’m using a superwash. I don’t know how many other fibers or yarn types react like this to blocking, but I’m sure there are more. Something you learn with time and experience.
Thank you! I've gotten a lot of comments about the background music in the past (and how annoying it is!), so I've been making a special effort to find better music. Happy you noticed!
Thank you for explaining gauge and blocking so thoroughly while also addressing how daunting they can be to a beginning knitter. This is the best explanation I've seen. The visual at 24:55 is hilarious too and so true. It really made me chuckle.
I am SO thankful for this video, truly!! I'm just learning how to knit and I'm having to teach myself since everyone else in my life is a crocheter, and gauge has had me pretty confused, but now that I've watched this video, I FINALLY understand it!! Thank you for being so thorough, using examples, and teaching it in a way that is understandable and makes sense! (I'm definitely going to start counting my stitches as hamsters now LOL)
Okay, first I'm going to admit that I'm a total rookie and that while I understand the importance of gauge, I so struggle with trying to do the count of my stitches! The techniques you show in your video are so simple and well-presented that I'm embarrassed that I never thought of them myself. BUT...thanks to you, now I can do it (I love the technique of sticking a needle into the counts as you go along to give eyes and brain a breather). Thanks so very much for sharing your down-to-earth techniques!
Thank you for this! Finally trying my hand at larger clothing items and wanted to gauge swatch, but I was just knitting the recommended stitches and rows and then casting off and measuring. Adding the garter stitch border seems like it will make my life much easier
About to knit my first garment, and thought I should at least look into the concept of gauge. I'm so glad I chose your video to do so! I feel much more confident in this process now (and hoping, wishing, praying I get gauge!)
You explained this so well. Whenever my mum started crocheting in front of me I tried it. I got so much quicker and faster than my mum in like 1 month. I’ve always liked a challenge yet whenever I come across knitting it doesn’t make sense. Yet watching this video after it showed up on my recommended I definitely want to try again in the morning when it isn’t 5am 😂. Thank you for inspiring me to try again
This is the best explanation and visual on gauge that I have seen...When other videos showed how to count the stitches in the swatch, I was felt frustrated because I couldn't see the stitches, but your video was extremely clear! Thank you for taking the time to explain...Your demonstration was insightful and exactly what I needed!😃
One of the nice things about knitting toe-up socks is after you finish the toe section, you can measure your gauge on the foot instep. From there, just do more [or fewer] increase rounds until you get a good fit when you slip it on. On a sweater, another option, besides changing needles or yarn, is to change the size of the garment, up or down.
I have watched many videos on getting gauge and this one is by far the best one I have seen, hands down! Excellent tutorial and so much fun and engaging to watch. It’s very thorough and answered all of my questions. I also appreciate your information on perhaps when I should consider the times when I should exercise patience and block my swatch. I never imagined that I would watch 30 minutes on gauging but I got hooked from the very beginning. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much. I’ve knitted and crocheted for years but never really understood the concept of gauge. This seems so simple if you want your final project to look like the love I put into it.
Beautiful presentation! I have been crocheting for a while and just started knitting, and I'm terrified of making wearable pieces (partly because I'm too lazy to make a full swatch, haha!). This makes it much more approachable, and I love the extra tips and tricks!

Thank you for this fantastic tutorial!! The animation cracked me up! I have never done a swatch, but I’m getting ready to start a project where I have to. I started the swatch BEFORE I watched this and I did not do the garter stitch border, so I’m going to start over. This was incredibly helpful!

Fantastic! I’ve been knitting for years and have shied away from fitted garments because while I understand the concept of gauge, I just didn’t know how to do it. Now I do!!! Thank you!
This was the best explanation I’ve ever seen! Right as I started this video, I told my boyfriend, “Gauge is something I’ve been trying to understand but I still don’t fully get it.” But now I absolutely do! Thank you so much for this video! I started with the knitting hack videos and then this one played. I’m so glad it did, and I definitely subscribed! Thank you again so very much!!
The editing and tutorial for this video is top notch. I mean hamsters? Brilliant! Must have taken a lot of time and effort to make this video and I thank you!
Thank you SO much haha... guess I will never start knitting a project without trying to get gauge first. You kind of got me excited for the whole gauge thing... 😂❤️👌🏼
¡Excelente video educativo!
Thankyou so much for this. I’ve made SO many expensive mistakes by not swatching! I absolutely love you and I ABSOLUTELY love Daisy! This “Flower-power Child of the 60’s” will never stop learning! 🙋🏼♀️🇬🇧✌️
I’m one of the newer subscribers, and I taught myself how to knit last November and I started through watching your videos!! I genuinely have been checking back to see if you were back with any new videos and I can’t tell you how happy I am to see this!! Thank you for sharing your videos and being so helpful! ❤️
Thank you so much for this video! I injured my back at work 7 months ago & have been out of work ever since due to it. You can only binge watch so many shows & read so many books (which pains me to say since I'm a hardcore bibliophile📚📖), & watching your videos on how to knit have helped keep me sane & given me something to focus on & help me relax. Since watching your videos, I've made a variety of scarves for friends & family, using different stitches, gauges, & even started combining different stitches to create my own styles. I haven't branched it to an actual pattern yet, but my next step is to knit a beenie. Thank you for giving me a silver lining! I have 1 question though, I tried to purchase yarn through your site & couldn't. Are you still selling yarn?
Hey! Sorry to hear about your back injury. That really sucks. I hope you're on the mend. If there is a silver lining, I guess it would be getting some downtime, being served by family and friends, and oh, also knitting! Right now, the site is no longer selling yarn, but you can get the same super bulky yarn from tjockt.com. I think they also have an Etsy page where they sell it too. Get well soon!
Sheep & Stitch Thank you so much! I'm a pretty active & independent person, so it's definitely taken some adapting to the fact that I can't do a lot of things, but my family has been wonderful. They've even been going to the craft store to get me different size knitting needles & yarn & stitch markers lol. They've been even happier to wear my creations so that makes me happy. If not for your online tutorials, I'd be super bored & beyond depressed. Thank you for keeping me positive! I'll definitely be checking out the website for the yarn because the hanks you use look absolutely gorgeous!
I had just finished knitting a gauge when I stumbled on this video. It was amazing . I learnt so much more in this video than all the books TH-cam clips I’d read and watched.
I've been fighting gauge for so long...This lass is outstanding. At first seeing the length of the tutorial I almost didn't go for it. I'm so glad I did. And now I can knit my sweater with complete confidence. I got gauge!!!
Great video! I’m wondering about how many stitches can you expect from changing needle size? So if I go up a needle size could I expect to get about 1-2 ish more stitches etc?
I am brand new to knitting! I actually just taught myself the knit and purl. I was searching how to make gauge and came across your video! PERFECT thank you
Knitting my first gauge square. Usually I don’t knit for a specific person. I just knit baby clothes and donate them. But with being stuck in quarantine I’m going to knit a special jumper for my granddaughter and I want it to fit!
Is there another option to just increase the number of stitches you use in the pattern? Also, what if my gauge is too small width-wise and just right length-wise? :-[
Wow, you have spent a lot of your time and your effort to make this good presentation. It's an excellent tutorial . Thank you for your kind and enthusialistic teaching us how to measure the guage in knitting. May you be blessed.
I do the same! I’m like well it doesn’t fit in gauge time to do some math! I am going to try a bigger needle and see if it helps but as I’m just doing “make a 5 inch square” over and over could just add more stitches and rows as needed. Will come back to this for sure though for other projects.
Thank you for this great video Davina. One difficulty I had was that had an increase every time I was switching from purl to knit and knit to purl on the same row. I eventually found out looking carefully at your video that you put the yarn over the right needle before changing mode (yarn to the front moving from knit to purl, yarn to the back moving from purl to knit). This step is very important (could be highlighted in the video), as if not done properly, we get an increase at every row.
So… if you’re buying yarn for a project, should you just buy one skein, swatch for gauge, and then buy more if the gauge works up as it should for the project? I’m a newbie and just starting to knit items wear proper fit matters.
Thank you so much for your clear instructions. I’m a hands on learner watched everything so intensely and now I’m going to knit those sweaters with confidence!
LOVE this video! I'm a beginner that knitted 5 scarfs and now heading to knit a sweater but I don't have the right yarn that's described in the pattern I like. Now I know the workaround! Thank you so much!
I’m newish to knitting and have been avoiding anything to do with gauge. This video was awesome and explained this so well! Off to start my first gauge swatch - 🤞🏻🤞🏻 the starts align first try! Thank you!
Very nicely done! You really put life into such a dry topic! I haven't been crocheting/knitting too long just little over 2 months now, but I do it to calm my overactive thoughts. And yes I am that person ... I tend to fall in love with finer details like 'the special yarn I bought just for the project' I would like to add to the list of options you suggested for adjustments to achieve the gauge since everyone should be able to satisfy their heart's desires - If your gauge is too small then double the strands of your yarn to achieve the recommended thickness of the yarn, say if your project requires a bulky yarn and you have a worsted weight then just double the strands. There is also chain plying aka navajo knitting to thicken up your strands Thank you again Davina for this lovely video! Really love your fun and interesting tips, keep up the good work!
I've been knitting for a few years and I've vever really made a gauge, even though I knitted quite a lot, but I just want beautiful, well-sized jumpers! Thank you for the instructions!
This might be a bit of a silly question but if you use the recommended needles and yarn but don't get gauge and you are a tight or loose knitter should you alter your knitting style to accommodate or use different needles and yarn?
It's really hard to alter your knitting style. It's like trying to walk with wider or smaller steps. It can feel kind of unnatural. The best way to alter gauge is to play around with the needle size or yarn. Most people are pretty attached to the yarn, so I would recommend changing the needle size first. Hope that helps!
That was awesome instructions....Wow! Thanks you made "gauging" sound so interesting. You're a natural born teacher...Thanks. Can't wait to get my hand on a sweater pattern.
I just have to tell you how happy I am that I found your channel on TH-cam! 😍 I’m a new knitter, just starting out, and not only am I learning so much from you, your videos crack me up! Thanks so much, you’re doing a great job! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm thinking because then you would have to rewrite the entire pattern, which wouldn't be hard for something simple like a scarf, but if it was a sweater or something doing the conversions and making sure you had the proper amount of stitches to symmetrically increase or decrease your rows so they still match up properly would be a lot more than most people would want to get into.
I love all your videos. Many videos by other knitters are very well instructed and clear to understand, but as boring as watching paint dry. Your videos are always very well instructed and clear to understand as well, but you add a whole level of fun for the viewer with your bubbly personality and cute visuals. You are my favorite knitting TH-camr!! Thank you for taking the time to teach us.
I love your tutorial except you lead people to believe that they cannot use smaller or bigger yarn for any pattern. you CAN but it takes math/ conversions but if you really want to you CAN.
Thank you, that's just what I was thinking. Most of the time I choose the yarn first and then look for a pattern that I like for that yarn. So I nearly never have that gauge and have to make the math but it works perfectly fine for me.
I really needed this video long ago! I usually just knit the pattern as it is or assume a way in which i can knit it and just fit (worked mostly) but this THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE IT ALL THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH!!!!
If you want to knit something that fits, then you've got to get gauge!

Yay! So glad it helped you out! Understanding gauge is incredibly empowering as a knitter! 💪
The editing and tutorial for this video is top notch. I mean hamsters? Brilliant! Must have taken a lot of time and effort to make this video and I thank you!
I do respect her way of showing, learning, and remembering.
Thank you SO much haha... guess I will never start knitting a project without trying to get gauge first. You kind of got me excited for the whole gauge thing... 😂❤️👌🏼
Can I just say that, while it may have been a mistake, the joy on your niece's face made my day? 🥰
¡Excelente video educativo!
Thankyou so much for this. I’ve made SO many expensive mistakes by not swatching!
I absolutely love you and I ABSOLUTELY love Daisy!
This “Flower-power Child of the 60’s” will never stop learning! 🙋🏼♀️🇬🇧✌️
I was so confused until I watched your video. Thank you so much for the clear and fun instructions. Subscribed!
I watched SO MANY VIDEOS trying to do this, and this has been the ONLY ONE that got me actually knitting!!!! Thank you so much!
Best gauge video! I’m finally going to make that sweater I’ve been afraid wouldn’t fit. 🤗 Subscribed!
I had just finished knitting a gauge when I stumbled on this video. It was amazing . I learnt so much more in this video than all the books TH-cam clips I’d read and watched.
Amazing tutorial. Informative, easy to understand, entertaining! Thank you very much 😀
You’re very welcome! Glad it helped!
I've been fighting gauge for so long...This lass is outstanding. At first seeing the length of the tutorial I almost didn't go for it. I'm so glad I did. And now I can knit my sweater with complete confidence. I got gauge!!!
Thank you for taking the time to explain guage and it was entertaining! It has totally helped me! Keep up the awesome videos! You rock!
Wonderful video…..I always watch Devina for a quick, clear, fun and accurate answer…thank you!
PERFECT thank you
Such a fun and well done video. I hope your full-time job is a teacher as you make learning so fun.
I always have to calculate my gauge because I never use the yarn or needles a pattern calls for.
Wonderful and thorough guide! Thank you so much for this!
So… if you’re buying yarn for a project, should you just buy one skein, swatch for gauge, and then buy more if the gauge works up as it should for the project? I’m a newbie and just starting to knit items wear proper fit matters.
You are a very good instructor! Thank you.
Thank you so much for your clear instructions. I’m a hands on learner watched everything so intensely and now I’m going to knit those sweaters with confidence!
This made so much sense. Thank you for making this video!!!
Thank you!
Great info and advice, Davina! Thanks much! ❤️
Very nicely done! You really put life into such a dry topic!
I haven't been crocheting/knitting too long just little over 2 months now, but I do it to calm my overactive thoughts.
And yes I am that person ... I tend to fall in love with finer details like 'the special yarn I bought just for the project'
I would like to add to the list of options you suggested for adjustments to achieve the gauge since everyone should be able to satisfy their heart's desires -
If your gauge is too small then double the strands of your yarn to achieve the recommended thickness of the yarn, say if your project requires a bulky yarn and you have a worsted weight then just double the strands.
There is also chain plying aka navajo knitting to thicken up your strands
Thank you again Davina for this lovely video! Really love your fun and interesting tips, keep up the good work!
I tip my needles to you,..... Bravo!
Thanks! Very helpful :)
I'm just starting out so was super confused on the whole tension and gauge thing until this haha
You gave me such a better understanding about gauge in knitting. I never realized how important gauge is. Your an excellent thorough teacher. Thanks!👍
Ah! Yes! Now I remember why I never swatch. I'm too lazy.
That was awesome instructions....Wow! Thanks you made "gauging" sound so interesting. You're a natural born teacher...Thanks. Can't wait to get my hand on a sweater pattern.
"She sings with her eyes closed"
I'm still laughing
right? it was so funny
I just have to tell you how happy I am that I found your channel on TH-cam! 😍 I’m a new knitter, just starting out, and not only am I learning so much from you, your videos crack me up! Thanks so much, you’re doing a great job! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Aww thanks so much! I appreciate it! 🤗
As a vegan, can confirm. My knitting is so loose you can walk through the stitches!
Finally I got it! Thank you for your tutorial video . Understandable how to count gauges. Awesome!!!🎉🎉💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽
Why dont we cross multiply and find new stitch/rows values for the given needle/yarn/person?
I'm thinking because then you would have to rewrite the entire pattern, which wouldn't be hard for something simple like a scarf, but if it was a sweater or something doing the conversions and making sure you had the proper amount of stitches to symmetrically increase or decrease your rows so they still match up properly would be a lot more than most people would want to get into.
I am so glad to hear someone break this down lol I am newer to knitting and I have absolutely been "knitting blind"
WHAT IF YOU REDUCE OR INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF POINTS REQUIRED IN THE PATTERN TO OBTAIN THE RESULT YOU NEED
That could theoretically be done, but usually takes experience. Depending on your pattern, it could be incredibly difficult.
Aww, thank you so much! That means a lot to me! I try really hard to make the videos concise and as fun as possible!
This video is great. I’ve tried to understand gauge for a couple of years now. After watching this, I’ve finally got it!
I really needed this video long ago! I usually just knit the pattern as it is or assume a way in which i can knit it and just fit (worked mostly) but this THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE IT ALL THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH!!!!
