I am a U S Sailng instructor. After basic lessons and you have the fundamentals down. I always encourage my students to get out on their own with friends and GET EXPERIENCE. There is noththing more satisfying and instructive than being the skipper. And when alone even more so. Good for you.
I am often amazed at the bravery shown by someone like Sam when I watch his videos of travelling the world. As someone who is super cautious in life, I admire anyone who can take to the open seas, especially solo. Kudos to you, Ann-Elin. Your courage is inspiring.
It took Sam years to build these skills, and your doors already look way better than his! Way to go girl! I am new at sailing so I hope you will keep putting vids like this as it is educational and inspirational! @sam give your girl some camera mounts as a present 🙂. PS: glad you broke your sunglasses as your eyes are gorgeous!
Nice video. Beautiful scenery. We've been sailing in northern Scotland this year. The weather has not been warm, but strong winds, so some decent sailing and some hiding.
tip: if you not sailing in wide open waters then if the wind drops and you decide to use the motor you should first point the yacht into what's left of the wind and drop the sails. As you do not want to approaching your docking area with sails raised unless you really really comfortable sailing solo. If you keep sails up in tight water ways and the wind lifts just a little you could get into a problem. You did very well in those light conditions - even a small yacht can be problematic tacking in such light airs. By the way you compainion doorway is not doing to keep you boat dry in heavy weather. Try refitting a proper side-in hatch closure. Another tip: if possible try and swop out the pull-cord starter outboard engine for a push button electric starter - you will have yourself lots of cuts and bruises, sore shoulders. Happy sailing Ann-Elin 😊
its all about time in the boat! lazy sailing is great, you get to learn your boat without feeling overwhelmed, eventually the wind will creep up and you'll find you're naturally more comfortable.
Well done! Every time you go out sailing on your own, you’ll get more ‘at home’ with it. There’s always something new to challenge you but it is so worthwhile. 👏🏻
Good going Ann-Elin, you did just fine for your first time. Besides you are a whole lot easier to look at than that hairy Sam fella. Keep this up and your subscribers might just pass Sam's count. I'll be watching your progress.
Nice video. I enjoyed it. Made me nervous when you mentioned heading out over the bar. Get better at motoring. Get some electronics. MASTER THE BAY/fjord.....THEN head out to open seas. You'll have more confidence and then.....more fun.
Your cautiousness is well respected for your first sail without Sam. I like the name Rodeo Jones, has a fun feeling to it. Thankfully it wasn't a rodeo out there when you sailed. Wait until you look back at this video in a few years and have a good laugh. Remember to take up the Fender next time out.⛵
That is a pretty little sailboat. Sam has no fear gene and this is good for a sailor. I think you have it but it is good to balance out Sam's lack of fear.
Congratulations, well done. We all remember the scary first sail by ourselves, oh and all outboard motors are instruments of the devil, they are always a pain in the butt.
Well done, you may want cleat off your tiller using your engine when dropping your sail. In higher winds a preventer on your main sail will make things a whole lot safer you . Your doing well stay with it .
Great Ann-Elin. Well done for the first time. Work a bit on sail trim. More tight to the upside while rigging. And the front sail on the water especially at 3-6 kts of wind a bit less tight. Then you are good... Greetings from Kiel/Germany, the home of sailing...
She didn't take her eyeballs off those sails for very long though. Remember also that she's sailing in light and variable a lot harder to stay trimmed also in protected waters rather than out in the wild blue. Finally remember that the boat ain't gonna have a lotta WAY in these kinda conditions so it takes mr boat longer to come about because you ain't gonna be powering through tacks. result is a lotta wallowing about. She did great. This boat may also sport a full keel which means it ain't gonna sport lively performance in real light winds. Remember that Sam only sails full keeled boats and I'm certain he influenced her on procuring this boat. He knows what's best for her and I for one would be trusting his judgement.
My tiller tends to fall away when tacking as I see yours does. This tends to spoil the tack,so I use a clip-on bungee across the cockpit with twin prusik loops to centre the tiller. The tiller will then return to centre as you complete the turn and you can concentrate on the sheets.Happy sailing.Looks a nice spot.
Huge congrats! Also, I see you have learned a very important technique for tacking small boats and you're doing it automatically ... looking forward the whole tack and passing the tiller from one hand to the other behind your back. Very nice.
Congratulations Ann-Elin. Looks great to me, and enjoying sailing vicariously with you. I’m sure you had a fun afternoon on the water. I am much the same sailing solo, but my confidence is getting stronger, as your video helped 😊. One thing that might help is to have a tiller clutch/tiller tamer so you have your tiller fixed amidships (to help stay on course) when you need to adjust sail, start the outboard, lower sail.
Keep up the great videos, I have been watching you since you started your channel and have enjoyed watching you and Sam’s adventures and now I look forward to seeing you adventures
I have a safety harness with a built-in auto-inflater life vest. It's very comfortable to wear and doesn't get in the way. One good way to learn how to sail better is to find the racing fleet in your area and volunteer to be crew.
This video kinda reminded me about my first solo sailing experiences. Trying to tack I got hit with the boom in head and ended up with unintentional heave to, because genoa sheet tangled around front hatch, and I was pushing rudder with a feet not enough. Day after I got hit with boom to the other side of my head, everything in head went to places and I understood a lot of what I was doing wrong. During that 2 day trip I also barely avoided fishing nets, got in the sand, escaped from the sand, but my confidence in sailing lifted up enormously. It is crazy, how fast you can learn, when no one is around to help you. Cheers from Lithuania, and happy sailing!
Very true. Bitch to learn when you got no WAY and things are wallowing about and variable all over the place. She did very well and she doesn't need 20 knot winds just learning to sail here.
Thank you for posting the video. Great job handling the boat. We have our outboard fuel tank positioned the same as yours. We tie it to a cleat so it can't slide off or flip over. Might be worth doing.
I suggest getting involved in the local racing scene. There's almost always boats who could use crew, even if you're a beginner. You'll learn heaps about sailing that way, and meet fun like minded folks.
The doors look great, Ann. . Look forward for more solo sailing from you in your nice boat there. You even got that engine started.. good girl! I'm certain Sam will be looking this over! What a beautiful place to learn. Wear your jacket. I know the wind is light but its better to have good habits you don't need a clip as this is protected waters and as you mentioned the water is warm AND you know how to swim. Just the same its just a good idea to form good habits and especially when you're out there on your own. Yep I guarantee that old Fathers like myself are thinking along the same lines we've seen way too much water flow under the bridge, Ann.
I had to learn this too, but there is a lot of room on the water, and often when i calm myself down, fix the rudder so i don't steer to shore, then calmly (trying at least) get my tools and start troubleshooting the engine. It is the "what if" that makes me stress out, and i need to tell my self that "what ifs" don't happen if i remain calm.
Came back for a second look and this wind is so light I'm surprised that a full keeled boat carried you through from the starboard to port tack. but you executed it just fine. Its actually a LOT tougher to tack in light winds than heavy because you can't gather very much way. I was watching the clouds rotate around though on that tack and you made it through. Was anyone back at dockside to assist you to tie off? I remember many years ago when I was learning I had an old sea captain teaching me to judge way to pick up a mooring in that same area just South of the A1A bridge. This guy HATED to use an engine... hated it. This was on the East coast of Florida in Ft Pierce. Yep Sam knows the area he has a video of him sailing a Hobie 16 there. I did the same but it was a few years before his time. Those are tricky to sail as I pitch poled mine more than once. NOT fun! I think the Dolphins thought it was funny they'd come right up to you to check you out.
Hey, it looks like you had fun. I like your stream of consciousness narrating. The music was a little loud, but who cares. Another great video from AES!
Sorry to hear about the sunglasses; we'll just have to look at your beautiful big blue 'coping'. Actually, in order to keep your hands (and mind) free, you could just put the camera on the cabin-top ,pointing towards you. I'd watch that all day you magnificent skjaldmær!
Looking good! Maybe add something to lock the rudder in position and a scruffy dog for likes (other than Sam) and you're heading for Iceland! 😊 I just remembered you have a dog already but it's not scruffy and maybe a little big. Maybe a scruffy cat?
The way you can tell if the sails are set properly is to let them out until the front of the sail (nearest the fore stay in the case of the jib) begins to luff. Then pull it in gradually until it stops luffing. Stop at that point.
Because I'm not there I can't really tell, but it seems you are pushing your tiller to far when tacking causing a braking effect and not allowing water to flow over the rudder correctly. It is great your doing sailing on your own. Using the jib to help turning by not pulling it over too early is good to do also.
Hippera! Vi setter ut råseilsbåten vår i Vestfold i August, kanskje vi møtes uti fjorden en gang. Har du AIS? Jeg har planer om å ha Goproen på huet en del, har funka bra for meg for å filme vendinger i småbåt.
I think she's a young woman that actually works somewhere. and this ain't a 12 meter cat she's sailing its just a cute little first boat for her. I also do not believe this is a competition between her and Sam he just does not come across as that type of person and neither does she. In fact I will take this a step further and say that Sam only has her best interest in mind.
Your definiantly getting better at editing. Not so much at sailing. 😁😁 Just joking. Like anything, It takes practice and you-tube Videos. You can do much better than lots of people. Best of luck...

Great job! You need to teach Sam how to coil his lines. Your lines all look so nice and organized. It makes sailing so much easier.

We learn by doing …learn about yourself and your boat in light winds .. building your “sailor” confidence calms anxiety🙋🏼♂️🙋♀️🙏👍🇨🇦
Well done! Every time you go out sailing on your own, you’ll get more ‘at home’ with it. There’s always something new to challenge you but it is so worthwhile. 👏🏻
Put on a pvd if alone. Look out Sam she's right behind you
It makes me remember my first time sailing solo. It gets easier. Keep going
I will! 😄
GREAT job.

Yeah, it is easier in a little more wind but good to practice in all conditions.
You Go Girl!!! Hope to see you out there someday.
You bet!
Great video, keep sailing
Great channel thanks
The little engine that could comes to mind well done Ann> Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations on your first solo sail. New doors look good. Hope you celebrated.
Loved this video. You did a great job 😊
Good on you... Reminds me of my first couple of sails... I scared myself sh8tless... That was 30 years ago... Go for it. Sailing is amazing...
Your cautiousness is well respected for your first sail without Sam. I like the name Rodeo Jones, has a fun feeling to it. Thankfully it wasn't a rodeo out there when you sailed. This video makes me want to go our sailing. Not long now until you and Sam are racing Rodeo Jones vs the Pickle
Any friend of Sam's... Love the music you chose.
First of many more to come! Practice makes perfect⛵️
That’s right! More to come!
Yay! You go, girl! Keep it up!
Thank you!!
Fun watching you build your confidence sailing ⛵️! Just keep it up and you’ll be a pro in no time. 💪🏼
Good job your learning and growing your sea legs.
2:02 “it takes a lot of brain power”. Is that the way Sam would think about it? You got this Girl🎉
Great job
That is a pretty little sailboat. Sam has no fear gene and this is good for a sailor. I think you have it but it is good to balance out Sam's lack of fear.

🤔 Next up : A surprise sail to Tunisia for a sailing rendezvous with Sam? :)
Be well! Cheers!
Actually more like a casual Spain-Morocco trip! Currently in Gibraltar ☀️
great job. You're a sailor...its harder to come about in lite winds...from now on is experience with every sail. thanks for the video.
Congratulations on your first rodeo Ann! 🤠🏆⛵ Maybe some gloves would be good to wear to peotect your hands?
Well done 🎉 brave determination eh? Keep them coming they're great vlogs 😂
Thank you! ☺️ more to come!
Yes, you should wear a life jacket. You managed pretty well solo sailing.
Looking forward to seeing more of your sailing adventures.
More to come! 😄👏⛵️
You should get some sailing gloves you won’t cut up your hands and it’s easier to pull on ropes.
Yay! Wow good job! Semi pro!
Oh this brings back memories! You are brave to go solo, but it's a good way to learn. Atta girl!
You chose a good sailing day. Need wind but not too much wind.
Great job Ann-Elin!! The only way to learn is by getting time on the tiller. Each time you go out you will learn a lot and your confidence will grow.
That’s true! I just need to do it more!

You are doing good, light wind is more difficult,.good way to learn
Very true. Bitch to learn when you got no WAY and things are wallowing about and variable all over the place. She did very well and she doesn't need 20 knot winds just learning to sail here.
Congrats, you doing great, you do have a good teacher lol, that's awesome, Sunday was my first time with both sails up, it was a great day ✌️
That’s awesome! 😄👏

Awesome job! Bring your fenders aboard though. It looks terrible. You're doing great ! Ann is coming for you, Sam Holmes!!
I will try to remember next time! 🙈

Can you now sail to the outer Oslofjord to sample the cod? 😂 I did enjoy reading your paper.
Wow, you read one of my papers? 😅🙈

I got a 24 foot Karlskrona Viggen! ⛵️

Joe I don't think she had enough WAY ON to matter. those winds were really light did you notice the wind on the water?
@@leecowell8165 Hi you're right I didn't notice the wind.
We prefer to look at your eyes anyway!
i feel like we could've painted the doors a color, but we're making a lot of progress, and that's the important thing
Didn't they paint them? I thought they painted them white. could be mistaken but I would paint them white this is a sailboat not a sports car.
Drone footage whilst underway please
Yes! I agree, It’s on my list of things I want!
Hippera!
It looks to me like you are learning very fast. Where was Sam while you were making this video? Do you have a job, or are you wealthy?
I think she's a young woman that actually works somewhere. and this ain't a 12 meter cat she's sailing its just a cute little first boat for her. I also do not believe this is a competition between her and Sam he just does not come across as that type of person and neither does she. In fact I will take this a step further and say that Sam only has her best interest in mind.
@@leecowell8165 You read a lot into my questions, which were posed only because I am intrigued by Ann-Elin's spirit of adventure.
Your jib looks like it is pulled in a little too tightly - especially for such light winds.
Your definiantly getting better at editing. Not so much at sailing. 😁😁 Just joking. Like anything, It takes practice and you-tube Videos. You can do much better than lots of people. Best of luck...
