James - "You didn't see videogames so well resemble the cartoons." Konami back in the day TMNT Arcade, Turtles In Time, The Simpsons Arcade, X-Men and The Punisher
Punisher was incredible. There are so many hidden moves that make it better than most arcade beat em ups. The best thing about it is, outside of Streets of Rage 2 on the Genesis, there weren’t many beat em ups from that era that had that many move sets.
2 years later, not only was the Cowabunga Collection released on Switch (every previous Turtles game, arcade and console), but there is also a new game (Shredder's Revenge).
In order to get the "true" ending James you have to beat it on the hard mode I can make it to prehistoric turtlesarus before I need to continue. The technodrome boss battle is a pain where the foot soldiers always block your attacks unless you shoulder check them
Hard mode is awesome in two player mode. On my own, I'd be lucky if I get half way in Prehistoric Turtlesaurus without losing lives. X_X Two player on Hard mode is the way to go.
I would like to see a remake of “The Manhattan Project” as well. “Turtles in Time Reshelled” was fun too. I wish it was available in the PlayStation store.
The special move taking away life has been a staple feature in beat 'em ups since Final Fight. It's basically there to stop you spamming the move throughout the whole game. Health pickups usually make up for it.
22:10 James makes a Rookie mistake by not grabbing the Pizza with only 2 health bars left. I know they were just having fun but you notice these things. (;p
Took awhile but I eventually owned both games; I think I ended up feeling like Hyperstone played a bit better, but Turtles in Time had a lot more features to keep it fresh.
Because of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge" coming out next week, watching this video is a definite way of getting myself all hyped before the game's release. ^^
@@gunsharck Well, for one reason, "TMNT: Shredder's Revenge" happens to be an excellent and properly-designed game that had a lot of work put into it, considering the fact that the TMNT video games were often praised for their beat-em-up action during much of the 1990s, and this game was able to deliver exactly what old-school gamers who grew up with the franchise had wanted, especially since a majority of the TMNT games that were released during the 2000s and 2010s had failed to do just that.
Naw it's really not especially if you use the slide move which is so easy to pull off with a dedicated run button. I think it might be what you're used to aswell. I was more used to HH so when I play TiT it's slower pace/stiffer play style is harder for me. Also double tapping to run isn't near as smooth as a button press.
@@soramirez5473 Way less going on and less detail, less colors and SNES is way closer to the cartoon/movies than SEGA. Is there even a HYPER STONE in the game or a heist going on?
I played Hyperstone Heist all the time as a kid. My friends and I loved it. I never had a Super Nintendo. So I didn't know about Turtles in Time until years later. That said, I'm still greatly nostalgic for HH. It was fun even though you do end up fighting the same bosses again towards the end. Not sure why they decided to program it like that.
yea i always found that to be weird especially how they had rocksteady in the game but diidn't add Be-Bop. it had to be something due to time contraints or something.
Right there with you. I actually beat it on hard and got the true ending, but that was about 30 years ago, when I was 10. I don't think I could do it today, not without lots of practice. I do have cowabunga collection, though, so maybe one day soon I can do it again.
The special move described near the end of the video, the one you do on most beat’em up by pressing two buttons at the same time, it’s a “crowd control” move, you are supposedly to use only when surrounding or when you are getting your ass kicked. If it don’t take your energy, you’ll abuse it. Some games made this different by adding a separate energy bar that will get depleted when you use these moves ( some versions of the arcade X-men you get items, like shoot’ ups “bombs” to do the special mutant move). Also, James has been playing Konami games all his life, can’t believe still didn’t know you always need to beat their games on hard to get the best ending.
"It's easier to look at that stuff when you're not playing it" I said exactly that when we had a family gathering about 20 years ago and I was sitting at the computer playing You Don't Know Jack with multiple relatives gathered around and my cousin whom I have been best friends with my whole life, as we were born only three weeks apart, yells an answer out.
The technodrome stage was a SNES exclusive so its very unlikely you have seen it in the arcade. In the arcade version you go straight into time travel right after you finish the sewers.
Dracula X is fairly different from Rondo of Blood, just like the other konami games of the era. I only remember a few maps being similar. Pretty sure it was just Konami's strategy of saving on development costs by reusing things but still giving platforms exclusives.
Rondo of Blood is Dracula X. That's the full title. Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (Rondo of Blood). The SNES version is instead called Akumajo Dracula XX, at least in Japan. Dracula XX is essentially a rearranged "hard version" of Rondo of Blood. It's like The Lost Levels compared to Super Mario Bros in that regard.
Dracula X is more like a remake of Rondo - the levels and gameplay are completely different. The only thing is the same are character / enemy / boss sprites and the music. Well, and story.
Konami and Capcom were the best third party developers. There were also tons of great third party developers back in the 80s-90s. I've grown tired of modern games, and I'm much more enjoying my retro games, now.
Leonardo's the responsible leader, the one who takes the most after his master and is his obvious successor. In comedy terms, he's the straightman to the other three.
Why is it so hard for you to just say 'their' instead of 'they'? Its not any easier. You are legitimately going out of your way to sound like an idiot.
When Konami cared? When did “they” stop? Metal Gear series are some of the best games out there to this day. Snake eater is and always will be in my top 5.
It plays "Pizza Power" from coming out of our shells, not Turtle Power. "Turtle Power" is the end credits song for the 1990 movie, by Partner in Kryme.
For some reason this session really stood out to me. I think it's because amid all this covid-19 insanity, this shows how people can really get together. Even if it's something as simple as video games, even though we're separated, we're not far from each other. Maybe it's because watching them playing old-school games reminds me of the times when I used to play those games next to my friends. This just brings it all back. But that's the point isn't it?
It's actually "Pizza Power". "Pizza Power" plays at the end of the game. That's the song from The "Coming Out of Their Shells" Tour. "Turtle Power" is the song from Partners in Krhyme that plays in the 1990 movie.
Mike never took advantage of Hyperstone Heist's best feature, the run button! He could've made easy work of that game with it, it makes the game feel different from Turtles in Time since it's way easier to take out certain enemies with it.
I think the episode featuring the yellow xenomorphs was entitled: “Attack of the killer pizzas” but invasion of the pizza snatchers still sounds awesome!
Genesis: "it's really stupid that they did a boss rush where you have to defeat all the bosses again, feels like I could be seeing more characters instead" Nintendo, plays any Mega Man: "Wow that's a great idea, fighting all bosses again before the final one!" By the way, Zelda reference: in A Link to the Past you must face many bosses for the second time at the end of the game, I wonder if he thinks it's also stupid.
Funny thing is back then, the games weren't really competing directly for sales since you didn't have a choice, you bought the game for the console you picked.. instead they were competing for console vs console arguments.
I feel like hyperstone heist is a bit more of an after thought of a game. Turtles in time feels like it has a plot and your logically going from one stage to the next progressing that plot. Heist just looks like they took the assets from turtles in time and threw them in a blender. Random shit happening in a random order. Also, the repeating bosses thing felt like one of those "oh shit, we gotta finish this quick, reuse some stuff to pad out the play time".
It's outsourced. Not developed in house by Konami like Turtles in Time was. Not so much an afterthought but a situation where they didn't have the proper resources to do Genesis games yet. Sonic/Sega's success caught the industry off guard.
The song at the end credits of Turtles in Time (that's originally from the "Comming Out of Their Shells" tour) is called "Pizza Power" not "Turtle Power". "Turtle Power" is the name of the song from the end credits of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
The best TMNT game is the arcade game where you could play all 4 turtles at the same time. If I am going to see a new TMNT game a multi player 4 player game is a must do for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft no question.
Think the reason why there were two versions of Turtles between the Genesis and SNES is likely due to exclusivity deals. Nintendo would get a “recreation” of the arcade game and Konami could get around that deal by taking assets from the game and making a different one for Genesis.
So why do Hard Corps and Bloodlines use all new assets. They neither look nor play like total rehashes of Contra III and Super CV. Konami went above and beyond for seemingly no reason.
Because the Genesis runs in a higher res then the SNES, so the assets from the arcade are very easy to port to the Genesis (they share the same res/aspect ratio). Assets/Sprites ported from the arcade to SNES would have to be redrawn. Hard Corps and Bloodlines use all new assets as they would have had to be redrawn anyways...
Fun dumb fact: This game breaks TMNT cartoon continuity. By the time the Turtles met Leatherhead in the cartoon, Baxter Stockman was already a fly -- yet Leatherhead is in this and Baxter is still human. Yes, I'm a nerd.
He is not a gamer in the sense mike is. He is a casual gamer and its like an old hobby he had when he was on high school- collage. I think it surprises you cause people expect him to be a hardcore gamer as he did the avgn series. Truth is avgn is like a mini show series or a series of short films. You can see that on board james more easily i think. Because you don't focus on the board games as we focus on video games when we watch the avgn episodes. I was suprise like you were until i spend a lot of time on cinemassacre.com watching his movie reviews. He is a director- artist who uses video games as materials to produce movies
Speaking of super moves hurting you when you use them in Beat 'em Ups, I like how Sonic Blast Man did it. Instead of taking away health, you get briefly stunned.
As a veteran of the “Bit Wars” I loved when a Turtles game finally came to my console (Sega Genesis) so I could talk that sh*t to my friends who all had that SNES that my version was better 😂
Played Hyperstone Heist daily as a kid. Never had the privilege to play Turtles in Time though. Mike seems like he'd have been more receptive if not for the boss gauntlet.
I would say that Shredder sending henchmen to change history in his favor was a smart move. The dumb thing was to send the Turtles exactly to the time periods where his henchmen went and the time portals are open. The plan would have succeeded had Shredder sent the Turtles to the formation of the Earth or to the Cambric to die instantly. I guess the game is very accurate when portraying the show because Shredder and Krang always had good plans but either one of them or someone from their staff somehow fucked something up and the plan went down the toilet.
I've been a gamer since Atari in the 80's and I've been through a boss rush in many games, but I don't think I have ever heard anyone call it that until this video.
@@maryjohnson5377 The earliest example I can remember where the term "boss rush" was used within a game was Ristar back in 1995. So the term goes back _at least_ that far.

@@maryjohnson5377 The earliest I can remember the term was in the portable Castlevania games for the Gameboy Advance. It was an unlockable feature. That was early 2000's.

But heist always remains one of my favorite games on genesis and now days i of course prefer it over turtles in time, just because it was big part of my childhood.
@Ben DC4L It really annoys me that are so many people saying the Snes version is better, we get it you don't have to keep saying its better.
James - "You didn't see videogames so well resemble the cartoons."
Konami back in the day TMNT Arcade, Turtles In Time, The Simpsons Arcade, X-Men and The Punisher
The Punisher was Capcom.
Punisher was incredible. There are so many hidden moves that make it better than most arcade beat em ups. The best thing about it is, outside of Streets of Rage 2 on the Genesis, there weren’t many beat em ups from that era that had that many move sets.
Astérix and bucky o hare
"Welcome To Die!"
deep irony of the Switch conversation as i listen to this while playing the Cowabunga Collection
2 years later, not only was the Cowabunga Collection released on Switch (every previous Turtles game, arcade and console), but there is also a new game (Shredder's Revenge).
In order to get the "true" ending James you have to beat it on the hard mode
I can make it to prehistoric turtlesarus before I need to continue.
34:39 he literally says it.
Slash is the hardest boss in the game, by far.
@@TheHauntedMouth definitely
Those guy were a pain... until you realize you can just tackle (dash and hit) to take their guard out, then catapult them
I would like to see a remake of “The Manhattan Project” as well.
Hyperstone Heist was awesome, I had it as a kid and friend had turtles in time- we played through both together!
Neon Night Riders had the best song out of any other SNES in my opinion
Took awhile but I eventually owned both games; I think I ended up feeling like Hyperstone played a bit better, but Turtles in Time had a lot more features to keep it fresh.
Because of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge" coming out next week, watching this video is a definite way of getting myself all hyped before the game's release. ^^
And, did it live up to the Hype for you? :D
Why would you need to “hype” yourself for a turtles game???
@@gunsharck Well, for one reason, "TMNT: Shredder's Revenge" happens to be an excellent and properly-designed game that had a lot of work put into it, considering the fact that the TMNT video games were often praised for their beat-em-up action during much of the 1990s, and this game was able to deliver exactly what old-school gamers who grew up with the franchise had wanted, especially since a majority of the TMNT games that were released during the 2000s and 2010s had failed to do just that.
Hyperstone heist was waaaaay harder. You felt like you achieved something when you beat that one!
Hyper stone heist not only looks better but also plays better. This Chanel always picks Nintendo. >,>
@@555nih It plays better but it isn't in TiT's league in regards to visual appeal, interest, diversity.
Hell ya bro!
@@soramirez5473 Way less going on and less detail, less colors and SNES is way closer to the cartoon/movies than SEGA. Is there even a HYPER STONE in the game or a heist going on?
7:37 James remembers watching a guy at the arcade beat the technodrome level, even though the technodrome level in only on the SNES port...ok.
Could definitely be remembering the original arcade game
I currently have the Cowabunga Collection! Hyperstone Heist is up there with Streets of Rage 2! 😀❤🔥
Sega Genesis hardware limitations.
Right there with you. I actually beat it on hard and got the true ending, but that was about 30 years ago, when I was 10. I don't think I could do it today, not without lots of practice. I do have cowabunga collection, though, so maybe one day soon I can do it again.
Finally got me with the ad 😂. I’m perusing the 1upcard site now
Let us know if you have any questions!
Glad they're promoting something they actually use.
I have Hyperstone Heist for the Genesis and I love it. One of my favorites for the system.
Better than Streets of Rage 2
"It's easier to look at that stuff when you're not playing it" I said exactly that when we had a family gathering about 20 years ago and I was sitting at the computer playing You Don't Know Jack with multiple relatives gathered around and my cousin whom I have been best friends with my whole life, as we were born only three weeks apart, yells an answer out.
The technodrome stage was a SNES exclusive so its very unlikely you have seen it in the arcade. In the arcade version you go straight into time travel right after you finish the sewers.
Hyperstone heist was the one I has as a kid. It’s also my favourite
@@kekeke8988 its also cut down because they couldnt fit everything into a snes cartridge compared to a cd game
Dracula X is more like a remake of Rondo - the levels and gameplay are completely different. The only thing is the same are character / enemy / boss sprites and the music. Well, and story.
@@toiletsinjapan9933 Unlikely. Someone has counted and it seems Rondo could fit on the SNES cart, sans the music of course.
Hard version? I find Dracula X is way easier than Rondo of Blood...
That Sega "Genesis" vs Super Nintendo video James did is now 5 years old.
Back when konami was gold
Bucky o hare, moo-Mesa, Simpsons, and Astérix are good beat em ups from konami via licenses.
Konami and Capcom were the best third party developers. There were also tons of great third party developers back in the 80s-90s. I've grown tired of modern games, and I'm much more enjoying my retro games, now.
Imagine if Konami did a beat em up game on South Park
Back when they actually gave a shit.
Leonardo's the responsible leader, the one who takes the most after his master and is his obvious successor. In comedy terms, he's the straightman to the other three.
"Back in the time, when Konami cared about they games"
Damn, I miss those times! hahahahahaa
true there last good Ninja turtles game was on DS 3 Mutant Nightmare.
@@stevethigpen6242 Konami is not the same anymore. Snake Eater is one of the "back in the days" games now.
I see a lot of similar stages from the NES Turtles Arcade game in Hyperstone Heist. Like the garage section, with the car that tries to run you over.
Hyperstone Hiest was my shit a sibling classic for 90s genesis owners.
Lol I'm saying it was my shit and a classic game that siblings played together that's all.😉
@Old School 😂😂😂😂😂
@Old School He's trying really hard to be funny, cut him some slack.
@@krisfrederick5001 Oh wow that's insane gotta get with the 90s man
I got The Hyperstone Heist and me and my friends used to play it all the time on my Sega Mega Drive when i was a kid.
Not that i don’t own both versions but i love to hear people talk about Hyperstone heist everybody acts like it never existed lol
Konami was getting around their “exclusive titles” deal with Nintendo.
It's actually "Pizza Power".
"Pizza Power" plays at the end of the game. That's the song from The "Coming Out of Their Shells" Tour.
"Turtle Power" is the song from Partners in Krhyme that plays in the 1990 movie.
Wait a minute... are we doing this?
Yes! It's time for... CONSOLE WARS!
Just got Hyperstone Heist from Amazon today. Just played it with my wife and 6 year old daughter. Both loved it.
Bringing back the gud ole childhood memories cheeeeee
Cheeeee
Mike never took advantage of Hyperstone Heist's best feature, the run button! He could've made easy work of that game with it, it makes the game feel different from Turtles in Time since it's way easier to take out certain enemies with it.
Most underrated TMNT character: Irma Langenstein.
I think the episode featuring the yellow xenomorphs was entitled: “Attack of the killer pizzas” but invasion of the pizza snatchers still sounds awesome!
Genesis: "it's really stupid that they did a boss rush where you have to defeat all the bosses again, feels like I could be seeing more characters instead"
Nintendo, plays any Mega Man: "Wow that's a great idea, fighting all bosses again before the final one!"
By the way, Zelda reference: in A Link to the Past you must face many bosses for the second time at the end of the game, I wonder if he thinks it's also stupid.
hyperstone heist was the jam
Sounds like an episode of Console Wars.
What a way to go all the way back to the past. O_O
Funny thing is back then, the games weren't really competing directly for sales since you didn't have a choice, you bought the game for the console you picked.. instead they were competing for console vs console arguments.
@@LadyCoyKoi ikr lol I love those guys.
I wish they would release these remastered on modern systems. I'm still mad Konami removed Simpsons & X-Men from the XBL store.
Konami might not have had a choice, now that Disney owns both of those IPs.
The song at the end credits of Turtles in Time (that's originally from the "Comming Out of Their Shells" tour) is called "Pizza Power" not "Turtle Power". "Turtle Power" is the name of the song from the end credits of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
Poor Mike was having SNES envy - and rightfully so from what I saw
HyperStone Heist = 8 Meg cart, Turtles in Time = 16 Meg cart. Hence why there's some reused assets, boss rush etc.
The best TMNT game is the arcade game where you could play all 4 turtles at the same time. If I am going to see a new TMNT game a multi player 4 player game is a must do for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft no question.
Hyperstone Heist seems to combine bosses from the original 2 arcade games.
Both great games, I think the controls worked better on turtles in time though
Spiderman & Venom - Separation Anxiety & Maximum Carnage = Genesis FTW!!! Fuck "LJN" Tho.
Think the reason why there were two versions of Turtles between the Genesis and SNES is likely due to exclusivity deals. Nintendo would get a “recreation” of the arcade game and Konami could get around that deal by taking assets from the game and making a different one for Genesis.
oh that makes a lot of sense, so it wasn't sega asking for a unique one, it was nintendo asking for an exclusive port
Man i played hyperstone heist so much when i was a kid loved that game
Watching this video, seeing both games side by side, visually I like the genesis version more. Tatsu means dragon.
Fun dumb fact: This game breaks TMNT cartoon continuity. By the time the Turtles met Leatherhead in the cartoon, Baxter Stockman was already a fly -- yet Leatherhead is in this and Baxter is still human.
Yes, I'm a nerd.
Baxter was fly but Barney still human
Gotta be honest - My mind is kind of blown that James has never heard the term Boss Rush. How is that even possible?
He is not a gamer in the sense mike is. He is a casual gamer and its like an old hobby he had when he was on high school- collage. I think it surprises you cause people expect him to be a hardcore gamer as he did the avgn series.
Truth is avgn is like a mini show series or a series of short films. You can see that on board james more easily i think. Because you don't focus on the board games as we focus on video games when we watch the avgn episodes.
I was suprise like you were until i spend a lot of time on cinemassacre.com watching his movie reviews. He is a director- artist who uses video games as materials to produce movies
James really isn’t a gamer, he’s a reviewer/casual player
Speaking of super moves hurting you when you use them in Beat 'em Ups, I like how Sonic Blast Man did it. Instead of taking away health, you get briefly stunned.
As a veteran of the “Bit Wars” I loved when a Turtles game finally came to my console (Sega Genesis) so I could talk that sh*t to my friends who all had that SNES that my version was better 😂
The genesis version was never better though.....
Jokes on you. SNES was far superior to the Genesis, despite Sega's propaganda about how Ninen-don't.
Played Hyperstone Heist daily as a kid. Never had the privilege to play Turtles in Time though. Mike seems like he'd have been more receptive if not for the boss gauntlet.
One of the best turtles game of all time turtles in time
You can see more shading details in the graphics on the Sega version
Castlevania dracula x and Rhondo of blood ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT lol you need to do 2 full play throughs of both.
Akumajo Dracula X chi no rondo is the Japanese name of Castlevania rondo of blood.
23:00 - I LOVE the Contra 3 overhead stages! Who is with me?
Well, I don't hate them like a lot of people lol
Castlevania SOTN was realesed on PlayStation and Saturn
Saturn version you could play as Maria and Richter, and had TONS of other bonuses
That's was fun hanging with you buds. Can't wait to hang with you guys again 🎮
Just remember you can go back in time and try the "change things" but that crime record will still be there !😂😂
I would say that Shredder sending henchmen to change history in his favor was a smart move.
Turtles in time hands down
I haven't played turtles in time in maybe 15-20 years, but I still remember every song from Turtles In Time
Replay it in the new Cowabunga Collection :)
Shmups on genesis is due to BLAST PROCESSING
More like third party support from companies who produced those types of games, like Toaplan, Technosoft, Compile, and a few other smaller developers.
I was a Sega kid. I grew up with this one.
James has never heard of a boss rush? That's been an official mode in many games for many, many years.
Just like the name of the level, I always called it a Gauntlet. The Gauntlet from Hyperstone Heist influenced how I viewed boss rush levels in future games.
@@maryjohnson5377 The earliest I can remember the term was in the portable Castlevania games for the Gameboy Advance. It was an unlockable feature. That was early 2000's.
9:40 The developers working for Konami at the time knew how to play to each console's strengths so they made separate games sharing the same theme with stages which showcase graphical effects only possible on that particular piece of hardware.
Not true. Hyperstone Heist was outsourced to lesser developers.
