    I attended Daves one day intense master class in Manchester Ct. I drove 4 hours to be there and it was worth every mile i drove. Dave spent more than 8 hours with the class that was limited to 12 drummers. He had practice pads for the class. He also had one of these Yamaha kits that sounded amazing. No mics, eq's etc. Just the drum kit. There was also another Yamaha kit there. The first half of the class Dave went through some really great exercises and technique oriented stuff. He walked around the class room and gave everyone one on one advice. 2nd half of the class everyone got the chance to play for him and also along with him. Once again he gave great advice on how to improve. Just a real positive day and i learned a lot. Changed my way of thinking and playing. If anyone here has the chance to take this class do it. Dave may never do this again and he is a great educator, person and he is funny. Just a totally positive day.

    Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I respect that, but I own both a Live Custom set and an Oak Custom set and they both absolutely kick butt. The new Live Customs have a slightly deeper tone IMO, but are no less killer than the Oak Customs. Not at all. The quality is still very high and just as good as the Japan make Oak Customs. They both have a very clear deep tone, but the Live Customs seem a little warmer to me with more lows and slightly bigger punch. Not better, just slightly different.
    Both sets rock bigtime.

    I have this same kit and finish. Favorite kit owned after many years and many kits - Tama, DW, etc. Wish I could find this 14" floor tom. Perhaps one day. 🤞🤞

    I actually have this kit, as well as a Tama SC Bubinga kit. Both are great kits. I always take the live customs out on gigs, 2 reasons.. They are a bit louder than the bubs, and most importantly, I use clip on drum mics. It is very difficult with Tamas mounting system to get the clips on around that star-cast mount. With the Yamaha kit, I can easily get clip-ons anywhere on the drum. They both sound amazing though, and they both have character as opposed to the same 'ole run of the mill maple shells.

    • @andyham6094
      @andyham6094 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff Ballou I also have both and I much prefer the Tama starclassic Bubinga. I also have a Tama starclassic BB that I use as my gigging kit which I also prefer over this Yamaha kit. Both the tama's are 2016 which has the upgraded hardware brought down from the star line. The quick lock Tom mounts, the quick lock floor Tom legs, the air cushioned floor Tom legs, and the new swivel wing mounting system if you choose the bass drum mount is easily the best bass drum mounting system ever created imo. I just prefer the feel and sound of Tama in general and their hardware and pedals and thrones. Just everything really. But Yamaha is def my second favorite drum company, cant go wrong with Tama or Yamaha.

    I think he's one of the top seven drummers in the world of jazz and drummers. He's just Lowe's and he just his rudiments are awesome and he's colorful and he's got such character when he plays his drums have such tasteful licks in every area whether it's symbols to drums drums to symbols high hats to base base to Tom Tom the floor X to snare a place traditional grip and that is awesome to see it's just you know his hands in his wrist his arms for arms are just like fluid when he flows around he is really awesome to watch and to listen to and yeah he's great love you Dave keep it up bro

    I own the oak custom and played the live custom in the store. I do not like the live custom. They sound so dead and have no character. Even in this video they sound like practice pads. Dave usually gets amazing tone out of his drums but even he didn't get anything out of this set. Bad yamaha, bad.

    Yeah, no love for the new Live Custom. The old Oak Customs were fabulous, the warmth of maple with the attack and focus of birch. I love mine!! Check out the new Brecker Brothers reunion DVD...Dave is playing an Oak Custom kit on that...and the Mike Stern Band Live in Paris. He gets an absolutely killer sound on both of those dvd's. Of course, Dave is an alien and can get any kit to sound great!!!

      Based on ridiculous prices of Drum Fantasy Camp which Dave is usually a part of, private lessons with guys like Tommy Igoe charging $175 per hr., etc..leads me to believe his one on one involvement will not be cheap.

    Does it really matter? You can EQ any piece of junk to sound half decent can't you? I know dry tone means a lot but isn't that a function of front end Mains tweeking? Drummers, please tell me what you think. I'm just a stupid keyboardist.

    • @acarlovonsexron1994
      @acarlovonsexron1994 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sure, you can EQ anything to sound compressed and dead, there is also stuff like moon gels, gaffer tape, and fluid filled heads to serve that purpose live, but you can never make a shit dead sounding kit sound open and warm.

    • @RICHGREENNOW
      @RICHGREENNOW 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlo Von Sexron Yeah, ok. Makes sense. I know Weckl has probably a very expensive kit(all his stuff free from Yamaha!)and he has enough rack mount modules to choke a horse. Checked it out when he was playing a small club in DC before he went on. Must be nice to get all your shit for free!

    • @RICHGREENNOW

    • @RICHGREENNOW
      @RICHGREENNOW 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Louis Caballero We think alike! I was taught by the master(I play keys)Kit Watkins of Happy The Man. If you have never heard of them, they are internationally known as one of the true Giants of Fusion. Please listen to them as I know they will be a strong addition to your repertoire. Both their first album self titled, and Happy The Man Crafty Hands. I would love to know what you think! I wish you were local, I would love to hear you. At any rate, all their material is on TH-cam. Just give it ten minutes. It changed me forever. Please let me know, k?

    • @larrytate1657
      @larrytate1657 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. The source itself is important, Eq and compression are like herbs and spices. If you have a shitty, tough peice of meat it's still gonna be tough and chewy even though it's been marinated.
