Many years of studying Dave Weckl, and Im still amazed at the variations and combinations he comes up with within his solos!!!Fusion Drummers!!! Awesome!!!
First got into Dave's playing when I heard "Got a Match" by the Chick Corea Elektric Band when I was 17. Managed to go see them at the Royal Festival Hall in London when I was 19. Saw Dave with his own band at Ronnie Scott's in the early 2000s. Then had the honour of attending a one-day clinic - just 12 of us, and Dave - in 2015 and finally met the man himself! What a journey. What a player.
probably the greatest (into the depth) interview, explaining his way of thinking, attitude and everything ..... very to the point , very professionally made questions
thank you so much! I'm always working hard to get the best results each and every time. when my opponent does the same -- as it was the case here obviously -- then it pays off big time
Hands down, this is by far the best interview I've watched with Dave or any other drummer! Great to hear such an open conversation about this art that we all love so much. Dave is without any doubt a true master and such a great guy too. Very valuable words from a guy with such an extensive carreer. Very insightful and informative. The camera direction is also very revealing...those close ups. Congrats Drumtalk for the great job! Made my day! Cheers from Brazil!
What a thoughtful person. His clinic at the Aladdin Theater in 1998 permanently transformed my entire drumming philosophy, and I appreciate it so much. Awesome dude.
A very good interview. I do remember seeing Dave Weckl with Chic Corea the 'Electric Band (late '80s).' I thought his solo was wonderful I remember when the time came for the solo to end, I saw where Dave wanted to 'take more' and I saw Chic smile and then Dave 'took off' again. I will admit it was fun feeling the end of the drum solo and seeing the smiles of the other players when Dave 'took off' again. Glad to hear Dave's take on things.
Hi Dave, As always incredible. When I hear you say these things,,, I always think that you have been saying this for yrs. I guess it takes a long time for a lot of people. Thank you for changing my musical life. I started checking in with you in 1994. My you have a long life my brother.
I had the amazing opportunity to hang out and study with Dave for a couple days a little over year ago. It was one of the densest learning periods of my life; it's amazing how good Dave is at packing information into a brief workshop setting. Dave's drumming has been an inspiration for as long as I can remember, and he's continually been at the top of my rotation of studies, both his written material along with his playing. Even given all of that, this interview is impressively rich in both its depth and its breadth. I feel like I have peaked a little more fully into the mind of one of my absolute favorite musicians. Thank you so much for such a great interview.
When I was a youngster, I’d never give guys like this the time of day. You know “If it’s not loud and fast, it ain’t no good.”was my mentality then. Such a shame, but at least I finally opened my eyes lol. Dave is such a fantastic player, you can’t help but be inspired by him. Thanks to drumtalk also for not just concentrating on drummers from one genre primarily, but having amazing drummers from all styles.
My introduction to this great drummer, was by hearing Michel Camilo's Why not? on the radio back in 1987, while painting my first appartment. At that time i was 19 and thinking: Who is that incredible drummer that i'm listening to? I was totally amazed by the energy, chops and sound. And the following speak would tell the listener that it was Michel Camilo at the piano, but not who the drummer was. I immediately called the Danish Radio to ask them about the name of the record and numbers etc.The next day i bought the Why not? album and In Trio, which also includes som great Joel Rosenblatt drumming. On the cover was incorrectly printed; Rosenblaff. So me and my friends would go: Have you heard about Joel Rosenblaff? He is also amazing. But anyway, i'm now celebrating 30 years of listening to one of the most inspiring drummers of all time, among Vinnie, Chambers Gadd and all the other fantastic fusion drummers. And finally i would like to say thank you very much for this great and serious interview with one of the most, at least to me, inspiring drummers of all time. And to myself: Happy anniversary with 30 years of listening to Dave Weckl. Can we please have 30 more years? Why not?
Really inspiring to hear him speak about playing musically and complementing the musicians he plays with. I enjoy everything he does and regard him as one of the very best.
Dave I SMILE for you because watching you play is SO INSPIRING and ENJOYABLE!! Can't play Jazz like you. Rarely Smile myself when I play so I'm alway thinking the audience must Hate Me. But.. Not feeling it's just Me thanks to you I can relax and not care about it. Met you at Catalina B & G a while ago and it's Such an HONOR!! The fact you stated you're still learning and trying to be in CONTROL and MASTER what you do is UNREAL but relatable. Never satisfied. My buddy said to me one time, "I Don't Know how the Hell Weckl does it but he always Tops himself. HOW... is that possible?? " I feel So Blessed for the Happiness you bring because so many don't have that in their lives. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your Talent and Gift to All of Us and ESPECIALLY Myself! Mad Professor Genius. You... Einstein... Yeah that pretty much sums it up.
Hi Dave, this is Doug from UB days. I'm 60 now and still play and write. It sure is good to see you in good health and still playing. Never stop playing. Be blessed .
It's so refreshing to hear legends like Dave talk about continued learning, limitations, and what's going on in their heads when playing. Great job, Phil. I've got some catching up to do on this season. :)
hey Anthony! thank you so much for all your comments! I really appretiate your resonance! when I have a little bit more free time we should do something one way or the other
The first time I had a knowledge of fact! About the drums and that I learned to love this formidable musical instrument, is when I first saw the incredible Drummer Dave Weckel, So I thought??😱This is how playing drums really, he is my inspiration!😰
Super well done. Meaningful questions and great insight from Dave. Always been in awe of Dave, met him several times, not for his technical stuff but for his music -- my favorite of all time is the West Side Story he did with David Grusin -- fabulous. So nice to be able to listen to Dave talk drums and pass on insight. Thanks for this.
Dave is an intricately-technical, conceptual-spontaneous player all wrapped in one. This is a rare quality. I have been playing for close to 50 years now, I studied Jazz, Rock, Latin to name a few and I must say that my fluidity is not close to Dave's ability to effortlessly phrase his emotions on the kit at will within the rules, and beyond the rules of musical engagement with the other musicians, while still sounding textbook. This man is a Drummers drummer. But what strikes me the most, is that Dave is still trying to improve his fluidity, I heard him saying this a couple of times. AMAZING talent!!
Dave is a musician PERIOD, if you listen to drummers who have been at it as long as Dave - they have transitioned from a 12-kit to a 3 piece! Plus his technique, skills, and passion are still very present in his playing. Dave is simply a visionary who discovered why he was put here on earth and put in the work to excel! He makes trad-grip look good! :-)
Does he have a drumming student named Marty? You can sort of picture his student walking up to his house, hearing the drumming inside, then all of the sudden the front door opens with a whoosh of steam and smoke and Weckl bounces out "Marty! This is the big one, the drum solo I've been working on for my whole life!"
I've had the opportunity to see Dave play in several different group situations. He always plays appropriate to the band, but is still Dave Weckl. He was smiling quite a bit during Electric Band gig I saw in October of 2016, although I completely understand his lack of concern about the "need" to smile while drumming. I've personally caught much grief over the years for that exact thing, as if a smile would have validated the complainants' existence....oh, well...lol
Listening a master; that's a true class... Thanks for everything, on my 18 years old with my drums. Dave Weckl always be a great reference in my strokes.
For the english speaker: It was at a Concert in teh last November at a place called Gschwend and it was a fantastic evening. Not only becaus of Dave and his playing! It was teh one an only concert in germany on that Tour. All the Best, Jürgen.
I think it's really cool, that he has this attitude of always learning and giving some respect to others that are better than him in certain areas... it's sure fun to emulate some of these great drummers, but at the end of the day, no matter the level, we are all learning. Great video;)
DAVE 's some kind of superhuman. He's s really in a league of his own. .Taste, dynamics, flawless !!!! My pref. all'time drummer by distance.
Nice to hear how much jazz means in the history and continued development of drumming :D
Many years of studying Dave Weckl, and Im still amazed at the variations and combinations he comes up with within his solos!!!Fusion Drummers!!! Awesome!!!

What´s amazing to me is how he is able to maintain, and even improve upon his incredible skills. It´s stunning!
It's really not amazing Frank... I've been playing 35 years and get better every time I play... But Dave is one of the best for sure!
I love drumtalk, always asking the good questions.
thank you yery much! :-)
Thank you Dave .............your a True inspiration to all Drummers ............Extremely informative !
probably the greatest (into the depth) interview, explaining his way of thinking, attitude and everything ..... very to the point , very professionally made questions
thank you so much! I'm always working hard to get the best results each and every time. when my opponent does the same -- as it was the case here obviously -- then it pays off big time
I truly wish our country supported our masters like Dave the same way they treat some of these pop “musicians.”
Hands down, this is by far the best interview I've watched with Dave or any other drummer!
Great to hear such an open conversation about this art that we all love so much.
Dave is without any doubt a true master and such a great guy too.

Congrats Drumtalk for the great job!
Made my day!
Cheers from Brazil!
hey buddy
reslly nice comment! thanks for watching and I hope you'll enjoy the things to come as well
He shares so much to help his drumming community enjoy our instrument. That;s awesome!
What a thoughtful person. His clinic at the Aladdin Theater in 1998 permanently transformed my entire drumming philosophy, and I appreciate it so much. Awesome dude.
which parts of your playing changed?
I remember that. I was there. Hell of a concert that night.
Dave is one of my all-time favs... Can´t get enough of him!
Always on top..... undeniable One of the most great musician in the world...

I Love his Drumming with Chick Corea and the Electric Band. Dave's Playing with the Electric Band is so Fluid. Wishing You all the Best Dave Weckl
was blessed to talk with him during a clinic. Best fricking day of my humble life .
Everyone going on about how he's aged...He's just embracing the ageing process of a human.
Gotta love that.
DW is the man.

glad you enjoyed it and took something out of it! I learned a lot myself shooting and editing Dave :-)

Always good to broaden your horizons
I see there are 39 dislikes and i ask myself: -How can you dislike such a MUSICIAN and DRUMMER? Absurd.
One of the best at understanding dynamics and seamless segways into tempo and/or time sig changes.

Really inspiring to hear him speak about playing musically and complementing the musicians he plays with. I enjoy everything he does and regard him as one of the very best.
Thank you Dave weckl. It's a blessing for me listening your drumming and music..Please don't die
It's about Drums and Drumming, not about anything else...a true mastercraftsman.
must listen for all musicians ...Stamped Sealed and Delivered !
Dave is so truly special. No one transitions phrases like him. Huge impact on my muse.

There are many amazing drummers but Dave, to me, is king.
Dave I SMILE for you because watching you play is SO INSPIRING and ENJOYABLE!! Can't play Jazz like you. Rarely Smile myself when I play so I'm alway thinking the audience must Hate Me. But.. It's so refreshing to hear legends like Dave talk about continued learning, limitations, and what's going on in their heads when playing. Great job, Phil. I've got some catching up to do on this season. :)
take your time :-)
but agreed -- Dave's talk was definitely inspiring on many levels
And the Master is sharing his ways........!!! thanks a lot and best regards.
Hands down the best drummer i have ever heard! He has reached a level where he can play into infinity and beyond that too.
This makes me shake my head! He is one of the best.

No wonder... it's Dave
Dave Weckl! Always my hero on the drums!! Greetings from Costa Rica!
Super interesting hearing his philosophy about music. I can't remember another drummer talking about a lot of these concepts and thought processes.
Another incredible video. So glad you're back at another season. Dave is unbelievable!! Thank you for what you do.

Truly a master on the drums, my god. So fluid!
Great interview. 👍 Thanks!
Thank You! i really enjoyed this video.... Dave is one of my favorites drummers, thanks a lot! :)
Dave is a musician.. This is what a lot of drummers lack. It's not just about the drums, but the composition.
One of the best drummers I ever met. Met him in Detroit Michigan 30 years ago. Sasko's Drum Shop
Thank you Drum Talk!!! Dave is Top Shelf. Great content.
ur welcome! thanks mate :-)
Amazing interview. Amazing player. Amazing dude. Thanks, Dave/Drumtalk!
thank you corey!
I love Dave Weckl but he's starting to look like Doc from Back to the Future
LMAO
Does he have a drumming student named Marty? You can sort of picture his student walking up to his house, hearing the drumming inside, then all of the sudden the front door opens with a whoosh of steam and smoke and Weckl bounces out "Marty! This is the big one, the drum solo I've been working on for my whole life!"
Ahahahahahahahahahahaha !!!
No matter how he look like. He's a monumental drummer, artist and great human being. Please stop stupid comments !
I think he already is lmao
That was very enlightening interview from the master himself. Got a lot out of it
I've had the opportunity to see Dave play in several different group situations. He always plays appropriate to the band, but is still Dave Weckl. Still so unbelievably great!! Amazing hands and tasty phrasing!!
Those drums sound fantastic and just like a red wine Dave has gotten better with age. Great interview. 👍 from me.
I heard him first in 1985 with Chick Corea and he was phantastic. Since then he improved year by year.
Very good DrumTalk !
:-)
I agree with what Dave Weckl says here about drumming, reading, listening, and his philosophy in general.
Well, he is the President of drumming. LOL.
Listening a master; that's a true class... Thanks for everything, on my 18 years old with my drums. Dave Weckl always be a great reference in my strokes.
Funny to see Dave rocking the mullet again...
must be feeling sentimental about the electric/akoustic band days
One of the all time greats ....
His playin never gets old.... #hero
A real Master, very interesting
The song that starts at 14:35 is so catchy and tastefully melancholic.
Another hero of mine! Great stuff! Thanks for this great content
What.An.Amazing.Channel!!! THANK YOU!
you're welcome!!! thanks for watching, liking & telling me :-)

Yes, this is exactly awesome!
Wow, I haven't seen him in awhile. Old Man River look; I kinda like it. All he needs now is a Harley.
For the english speaker:
It was at a Concert in teh last November at a place called Gschwend and it was a fantastic evening. Not only becaus of Dave and his playing! It was teh one an only concert in germany on that Tour.
All the Best, Jürgen.
That was amazing.
A master at work.
i love dave weckl. he is the man dude
I think it's really cool, that he has this attitude of always learning and giving some respect to others that are better than him in certain areas... it's sure fun to emulate some of these great drummers, but at the end of the day, no matter the level, we are all learning. Great video;)
A living Master. Amazing.
let s imagine Weckl practising piano another life time .....
Yas EH jejeje I was like OMG too with that part
It doesn’t matter who you ask. All drummers respect Dave.
"It never ends & that's the beauty of it...." said after playing 48yrs..:-))
