  • This episode of the Good Timekeeping Show is an in-depth review of the Casio SGW-1000. It has functions and features very similar to what's found on more expensive ProTrek and G-Shock watches but at a significantly lower price. Hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the "Triple Sensor" which includes a barometer, thermometer and digital compass. The watch also uses barometric pressure as the basis for its built-in altimeter. The Triple Sensor readings can be displayed in metric or non-metric values (meters/feet, C/F, etc.). The user can also record altitude readings for later review or to track altitude changes while climbing and hiking. The watch is water resistant to 100 meters (10 Bar). The time accuracy is within 15 seconds per month and it should run for about two years before you'd need to change its lithium CR1616 battery.
This watch features five daily alarms (one of which is a snooze alarm), an hourly chime, a 1,000-hour stopwatch, a countdown timer (up to 24 hours) and a World Time mode to display the time in another time zone anywhere in the world. The watch will calculate sunrise and sunset times for the current date and it can also display sunrise and sunset times for past and future dates. The user can set the latitude and longitude coordinates manually for a more precise calculation of sunrise and sunset times for a specific location. The watch has a great backlight which lights up the whole LCD readout in a clear, white-looking light. The light can be set to turn on automatically (or not).

casio has a budget line of watches called Outgear that are meant for outdoorsy people.. this watch (sgw1000) is the most expensive of them (~$75 usually) and there are a few others that have twin sensors and start at about $35 like the sgw100, sgw300, sgw450... (i think all the model numbers start with sgw...).. all have 100m WR and have functions that are useful outdoors like compass, weather alarm, altimeters, temperature...

Got a PRG-340 and its crazy how similar it is. Everything from design to function is nearly identical. Only real upgrades are tough solar, more accurate (and smaller) sensor, and better compass visual because of the second LCD layer. Still keeping my eye on the watch bins for this beauty!

you mean this sensor has an precision of 1 meter instead of 5 meters? I saw a video comparing older PRW2500 with newer PRW3510, the newer was changing its altimeter by 1 meter when elevated by a meter and the older 2500 was fluctuating by 5 meters. What's the precision of this sensor? thanks .@@traviswalker8933

I got this watch at Walmart for the $25.00 It is the last Casio I wil ever buy. It has been back for repairs where the put in a new module. The Baro and Alti both say "ERR" I replaced the battery a few months ago and today it reset to 1-1 and noon. I reset the time and got a replace battery a few hours later. Glad you had good luck I did not. This is the third Casio. I also have the twin sensor that is working but the watchband is unique and I cant find a replacement for it. The battery is a pain in the AS__ to change. and the alarm is so low I can't hear it. Both in this and the twin sensor.

I wonder if you could use the "adjust" feature to offset the temperature of the watch while you are wearing it... maybe it would compensate for your average ambient body temperature and give a relatively accurate temperature reading of the environment.

Sometimes when the module comes out the buttons are pressed in a little. It may be necessary to remove the module and push the buttons out from inside before installing the module again. The buttons have to make contact with the sides of the module and if the module isn’t pressed into place correctly then the buttons won’t make the right contact. It would feel like you can press the buttons but they don’t push themselves back out correctly.

That's a bargain price. In the UK they're about £80.00.
Great review - my family and I have had great service out of Casio and Timex watches for 30-50 years.
I think that this watch, even at £80 is great VFM.
I'd not set up a Casio watch for a few years (I used to be the go to kid for that and had Casio calculator watches etc in the 1980s), the hand book was confusing, but watching your video got me back in the Casio, settings, mindset - thank you👍😊✌️ Then it was easy to set up. I need to fiddle with the Alt, Baro and Temp settings - if I ever get to fly with my friend again, then it would be interesting to see how accurate the baro, alt, compass is🤔🤞👍😊✌️

Re: the thermometer reading: If you are hiking in a very cold climate, it might come in handy to know the temperature reading at your wrist, as affected by the heat coming from your wrist. This could act as a warning to impending exposure or frostbite. If you really wanted the ambient temperature, of course take the watch off.
