    If it isn’t already, try formatting the SSD and change its files system to HFS and then see the read/write speeds. You don’t need to make a video, but just lemme know

    Try connecting the TB drive directly to the M1 iPad instead of through the dock. Had a similar issue w/ dock on my M1 Mini & got similar results. Direct connection to TB port on Mini gave me ~3.5 times read/write speed.

    Thanks for the video, I may have missed this, have you tried the drive directly into the iPad Pro without the CalDigit or other variables? Wondering if something else at play affecting speed.

    The new iPad Pro has a thunderbolt port. But the real transferring speed is also limited by the quality of the inner hard drive. I guess the problem is not only that the system might not be updated yet. I would suggest you to test transferring file from one external ssd to another external ssd as the file is not going through inner hard drive but thunderbolt pcie bus only. That would be interesting to see the test :)

    That is why I ordered a 2TB model. I was quite sure that you could not get the same speed provided by Thunderbolt 3 on an external drive. I will use external drive for data or portability : I am sure although that the display issue and a more proper resolution of output will be in iPad OS 15 as well as pro level apps and a better access to the file system. For the rest we are literally in Apple's hands now.

    Nice video! Would you be able to test whether usb audio interfaces work through a thunderbolt dock using an iPad Pro and GarageBand? Such as two mic inputs on a focusrite 2i2 (or similar) with phantom power on?

    • @djshineboy
      @djshineboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an older iPad pro but audio interfaces work great. If your audio interface is class compliant it will work on all iPads. If the Thunderbolt dock has USB-A ports it should work fine.

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So Apple markets this iPad Pro as having 40Gb/s Thunderbolt 4 capability and then completely gimps the machine by using a crappy, slow internal SSD? No, it's not an assumption and is either an issue with Thunderbolt capability or Apple really did use a crappy SSD.

    Great video!
    I’m thinking about purchasing an M1 iPad Pro for when I start traveling again with my Fuji cameras. Quick question for you. With iOS 15 were you able to do a speed test (download time) of downloading (for example) a 32 gig UHS-II SD card with a UHS-II card reader to the M1 iPad Pro?
    and backing up the same full 32 gig card data to Samsung T5?
    That was my workflow when I traveling to Cuba and Guatemala with the previous model iPad Pro.
    Keeping it simple, sleek. Returning back to United States with all data on the iPad, the Samsung T5, and 8 SanDisk Ext Pro memory cards.
    I’m trying to ascertain if there is a software bottleneck or hardware bottleneck with the new in one iPad.
    If it’s not much faster I mayyyyy. just stick with what I have for another year.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi, thanks for the informative video - watching it nearly a year on, as I just managed to afford a pre-owned iPad Pro M1. I was messing around with an old Belkin TBolt 3 Dock (which mostly works) and for the heck of it, because some things don’t translate to iPad use, I tried daisy-chaining the Belkin via the USB-C port on the BaseUs corner dock hub thing specially made for iPads. iPad Pro M1 came up with a dialogue box that said this : ‘This ipad cannot be used with Thunderbolt 3 accessories’. How about that? I concluded, this was somehow prompted by the weird combo of hubs I daisy-chained, but was not in fact an accurate statement - IE the iOS15.3.1 on the iPad Pro M1, was looking at a TB3 unit plugged into it via a simple slower USB-C device (the BaseUs corner hub) and objected. HOWEVER, there seems no objection to the other way around - IE first plug the TB3 cable of the Belkin into the iPad Pro M1, THEN plug the BaseUs corner USB-C hub into one of the free TB3 ports on the back of the Belkin.
    The thing I cannot overcome, is that in order to make the iPad Pro use its OWN speakers (excellent as you know), you would need access to the sort of control the Mac OS provides, where it’s meant to be some CODEC toggled or something (I have no actual Mac OS devices), set the speakers to ‘internal’ says the Belkin guide on their website (‘Troubleshooting audio and headphones’).
    But, I think this is a sufficiently good setup, I can make it work/live with it. Interesting aside - the real pukka earbuds I have, wouldn’t work with iPad Pro M1 - the inline controls were all shot to heck. Tap the ‘up’ volume and it shot up to the max, blew my eardrums out! Pretty unpleasant. Won’t go into the details, but the earbuds ALMOST function with being connected into this daisy-chain setup, whereas with the pukka Apple 3.5mm connector to USB-C, it’s no-go. Same as via the corner BaseUs directly plugged in - but indirectly, via the big Belkin Dock, it almost works completely.
    But you know which earbuds work completely perfectly, just fitting them into the Apple 3.5mm to USB-C adapter?! A one-dollar cheap copy of Samsung-style earbuds. The controls as you might know, are entirely differently operated, Apple earbuds compared to Samsung style. However, it seems Samsung-style ones now work with iPad Pro M1 where actual Apple ones do not, despite the hitherto insurmountable technical differences. I put this up on the Apple Community, await an answer, but I think I will order a better set of Samsung-style earbuds. The up/down volume works, the double-tap to skip a song works, the triple tap to go back a song works, the tap to pause works…very weird! But good. Thanks again, I hope this info in some way is reciprocating the help you have given me in appraising whether to buy the iPad Pro M1.
    [EDIT - the good feature that attracted me to the Belkin was it had an audio 3.5mm out at the back, for my 15” QTX busker amp, and also another 3.5mm at the front, for standard Apple earbuds, or as you now realise, Samsung-copy earbuds. I use the microphone too, and all was fine on the previous iPad Pro 2 I had, I have literally had to spend about $150 US in order just to replicate what I had before…because I noticed some latency using the corner USB-C hub when playing a keyboard into GarageBand - my primary use of Apple iPad devices - and it’s proved correct that the Belkin TB3 dock, has no noticeable lag or latency when playing. I have only just got these bits and pieces slotted together, it took over a week of research before I felt it was worth a punt on the Belkin Dock, and I will be honest, it’s not been a great customer benefit lopping-off the 3.5mm jack, for me anyway. Seeing as my sole reason for getting a decent iPad was GarageBand and Cubasis DAWs.] Ok I think that’s finally me, that’s the thing, the Belkin dock will possibly enable me to continue without getting a ‘proper’ interface like a Scarlett 2i2. I will try the guitar soon, see if the latency is better, it probably is, I used to have to shuffle the live-recorded guitar along by a part of a bar (a second or so?), and had no idea back then why this was (2018). Take care.

My MS Surface from 3 years ago (i5 vs) has no problem. At this point I know I spent too much. I upgraded from an IPad Air 2 which is pretty old now and the battery is degraded. There just isn’t a lot of difference. I guess it’s a bit faster. File management on iPad just seems to be poor.

The TB is clearly capable of very fast speeds and a few days after release is probably unfair to conclude anything, we know Apple takes their time with software so patience is probably needed.

    Amazing that Apple is able to keep lying about what its product can do and keep suckering people into purchasing their products year after year Granted it is amazing at what it can do but year over year the improvements are marginal at best but they will hyp the new iPad like you will really gain the functionality that you cannot do with the last model line. Marketing is a crazy thing that has us defy our own powers of reasoning.
