Warwick knows Jinx and Vi for sure from his voice lines. He did something to them, something that he regrets to Jinx and it seems he has anger towards Vi. Specically the line of "Zaun needed you."
He also has the line of "Who taught you how to punch" to Vi which has lovely possible tie ins to him teaching her to fight or her learning to punch from him in other ways.
Warwick has already been confirmed for the series so have to assume that scream is to do with Warwick.
My personal headcanon was Warwick is Jinx and Vi's father and the scream was Jinx witnessing Warwick be taken or he did something unspeakably terrible (hence his voice line to jinx of being "let me forget...")

idk if its a slight error or a hint at something else but the scoreboard in the flashback @ 34:17 seems to be the same as the on in the 'present' as we see jinx observing it. which means the flashback of vi is her punching the machine and resulting in a score lower than 12th place, which is 975. to me this means vi either beat the machine so hard it broke, explaining why jinx had to fix it or less likely, this is the one time she didn't use augmented gauntlets lol.
i also love Jinx's top. i haven't heard any one mention this but i doubt im the only one to notice but there's a rather overt "X" visible in its style. Vi being 6 in roman numerals. and ekko - also from zaun and likely the same "gang" or "family" has Xii on his bat/sword/lightsabre thingie. just a neat little nuance i appreciated.
and this *might* be a bit of a stretch but the railing around the punching machine seems chaotic but on the left (when looking in from the outside) you have a shape like a "J" and on the right you see a "V" shape. again, this is a bit of a stretch but i had to notice it.
ALSO, another thing i might be reading into too much is the break in the STAINED glass could be interpreted as a giant bullet whole with its trajectory aiming like a rifle scope at the position where the crow ultimately ends up landing, and unfortunately being "murdered" [which btw its literally legally impossible to murder an animal, murder only applies to humans, sorry im a stickler] and a flock of crows is called a murder. so a bit of an inception esq. foreshadowing/symbolism.
sorry for the rant, i don't really do reddit, im not on any forms nor am i part of any online community besides youtube comments. so if this has all been discussed.. oops? just wanted to let it all out.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but 2D "smearing" is just art-directed motion blur. Smearing, "motion lines", duplicated geometry, and squash and stretch are all 2D hacks meant to simulate motion blur. But since these effects aren't generated by a mathematical simulation of physics (like 3D motion blur is), they can be art-directed in all kinds of interesting ways.

    *Spoiler Warning*
26:37 I just noticed, that in the moment Jinx shot the bird, she closed her eyes. Now, this could just be an instinctive reaction to firing her gun, a lot of people do that - but, with the benefit of having watched all of Arcane multiple times, I've noticed something of a trend in Jinx's behavior: She doesn't like violence or death - chaos, destruction, explosions; absolutely yes, but not violence itself.
    Let me explain:
*Episode 1,* we see her covering her eyes as singing a song as she and Vi walks along a bridge during a battle between Piltover and Zaun. She is blocking out the violence and destruction around her. Later, the same episode, Vi and the gang gets into a fight with some other kids on the street, and she looks absolutely traumatized as she looks on.
*Episode 3,* after the disaster of her Monkey Bomb, she runs up to Vi pleased that her Monkey Bomb worked, not even noticing the corpse right next to her, only reacting to the fact that Vi is upset with her, and when she does realize that something went horribly wrong, her eyes immediately fixate of Claggor's bloody goggles, rather than the corpse in front of her.
*Episode 5,* (this scene), she closes her eyes as she shoots the bird.
*Episode 7,* after setting off a series of explosive mechanical butterflies (or whatever), Jinx walks down the old bridge, humming the tune she was singing in Episode 1, when she comes upon one enforcer who is badly wounded, but still alive, and she points her gun at him, looking at him only briefly, before averting her eyes as she pulls the trigger.
Add to this the fact, that her preferred weapons are her explosives and the minigun - her pistol is used mostly as a backup/holdout weapon; her MO of killing is imprecise, impersonal, and at a distance, so she doesn't have to see the people she kills, and her victims are nameless, faceless enforcers or members of a rival gang (Firelights) - obstacles in her path that have no emotional tie to her. The few times when she is confronted by someone she actually knows (Vi, Ekko, even Cait and Sevika), she hesitates/refuses to pull the trigger and/or misses her shots, even at close range.
Jinx does not lack empathy, she is not an unfeeling, cold-blooded killer (at least not in season 1) - she has learned to mentally block out violence and death from her mind, to the point she's probably not even aware she's doing it. To her, the "kill" itself is not the point, it's not why she attacks people (or birds) - it's just about making them "go away".

      yeah really insightful comment.very detailed.

    • @bzzzzzzzzzz2075
      @bzzzzzzzzzz2075 ปีที่แล้ว +26

You're totally right! I've been trying to explain this many times, because Jinx was a very empathetic child. She didn't show any signs of struggling with empathy or anything. As Powder, she always would absorb everyone's moods like a sponge, and when she didn't understand the gravity of death on the bridge ep1 bc she was like 5, she looked to her sister and then immediately started crying because Vi was crying.
Actually the ep3 scene you mentioned is one of the things that people use to claim she wasn't very empathetic. People point out how she yelled about 'why did you leave me' rather than about the fact that her family died, but from my pov, it seems totally reasonable that a child that would struggle to process all of that guilt and grief would try to shift the blame onto VI's actions. Like, in that scene, Jinx's priority wasn't that Vi left her, and it wasn't what hurt the most. It was what Jinx fixated on because out of everything that hurt, it hurt the least. So it wasn't an unempathetic reaction to her family's death, it was coping with too many emotions to process.
But yeah, the only time we see her actively enjoying violence is ep6 while shooting the firelights, and from everything I've seen, they were faceless, and she didn't look like she was even paying attention to how she was hurting people. She looked like she was on an adrenaline high or playing a game. There was no sadism there, just a mindless mania. She only really seems sadistic when around Sevika or pulling a prank, but with Sevika it's a 'haha I'm in control and you're not' vibe, and she treats her pranks with about the levity you'd expect a teenager to, even though they're notably crueler bc of her upbringing.
What you were saying about her averting her eyes when looking at violence- ok two things that solidify your point,
One- im gonna elaborate on the example from this video-> Jinx doesn't just close her eyes when she shoots the crow, she doesn't even turn back to look. We know from the show that at some point she gathered the feathers, but she doesn't want to see it fall to the ground or suffer. She turns around with the momentum of the shot and doesn't even get a glance at its body. And picking up the feathers was likely a utilitarianism- 'well I've already killed this thing, and these feathers are scattered all around, let's make some use of them'
Two-> In the Jinx council archives(i think of you haven't already read them, they're on the league wiki), she basically writes in her diary that that she feels immense guilt about everyone she killed, not just her family, and that they haunt her constantly. She also wrote(a little cryptically) basically that she used to close the eyes of the people she 'took care of' on silcos orders. We also see that Jinx independently developed the religious belief that everyone goes to a wholesome afterlife where they're with their loved ones, likely to cope with the fact that she regularly murders people. These are not things that come about when you have a character who enjoys inflicting pain or lacks empathy, these are the behaviors of someone who has to shut down their empathy to cope with working in a gang in Zaun.
Anyway sorry if this went on too long, I hope you appreciate my input. Love your comment and your interpretations, have a good day :D

The animation here is amazing but it's those facial expressions that really sell it. They're just so raw and prefect.
Even the shots of Jinx with the "emotionless mask".... shows so much emotion. I know that emotion. I've felt it. And I can feel it in her when watching this.
As for the mirroring fight scene. Yeah, Jinx is mirroring Vi's attacks, but is doing things HER way. It shows the differences in personality. Vi is a very controlled and methodical fighter. Every strike is precise and the movement is quick and tight. Where-as Jinx is just going absolutely wild. She's flailing around and throwing her whole body into every attack. It shows her crazy personality, but it also shows that she's just letting go and pouring out all of her emotions into every attack. That is why she's not only exhausted at the end, but also why she's still not as good a fighter as Vi.
I've never been a fan of LoL and never played the games (love the Pentakill music though). But this animation just looks way too good not to watch. Sure, the Jinx in the game (and the animated promo stuff for the game) looks like a fun character - but the Jinx in Arcane looks like someone with so much depth to them and I feel like I can relate to a lot.

For all her "punch first..." attitude, she doesn't seem to get much hotter, emotionally, than "why I oughtta..."

From what we know (just the Warwick "You were there... Let me forget", Fiddlestick "Jinx! All your fault. All your fault!" and Sawin "Faces... Fading in the flames... It was all her fault" quites) Vi very VERY likely had a good reason to be pissed.

The neutral expression when Jinx whips out her pistol is a battle stare. Essentially a trigger has already been pulled in the mind and any doubts have significantly reduced impact on judgement. This allows for quick and even merciless decision making. While this is often equated to combat readiness it should rather be seen as a method of emotional preservation, a way to disassociate one's self from immediate actions and events.

39:15 The way Jinx is standing there while remembering Vi - With her legs together, arms to the side, head down, is similar to the way a child apologizes to a parent or teacher for doing something wrong. But in this case, of course, it’s more twisted than that.
Also, when you said “Taking her high score away from her, however small that is..” my eyes got steamy.

I sort of disagree with your assessment of Jinx' expression as she draws on the birb. To me there is fear there, but the sort of fear that's been dulled down by trauma. It's a sorta thousand yard stare, very blank, but her eyes are also extremely wide and alert. Like the fear has become normal to the point of it being dulled in a way... Like a sort of dissociation. And I find that heartbreaking, but also brilliantly done.

    • @bzzzzzzzzzz2075
      @bzzzzzzzzzz2075 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I initially agreed with Skyen, but now that you've said that, I'm 100% with you on this. It's kind of a battle-ready fear, too. It's a, 'I'm scared and I'm prepared to do whatever is necessary for self preservation' but also very dissociated, as you said. It's not an active fear, it's distant and primal, almost. She looks like she's operating off of pure survival instinct. I think that's also what gives her the thing people call the 'crazy eyed' look of that shot, because she's not really thinking, she's just acting. I've noticed a lot of that dissociated look on Arcane-Jinx, generally, and this definitely matches that.

As someone who struggles with mental health, I think the animation in that moment when she's trying to keep it all in, to stay in control (around 39:30) was really impressive. In fact, I didn't even realise I tend to do the exact same motion when dealing with unpleasant thoughts irl: a closed body, a lower head, eyes shut to focus on the problem at hand; and finally the twitching and REM as the vulnerability bubbles up, mixes with the frustration of not being able to keep everything in check and becomes unbereable. Really well done indeed.

I would like to add my own interpretation to the story telling here, I believe that all the way upto the bird appearing, Jinx has felt so numb and unsafe every since whatever happened, that she has lost her empathy as a survival mechanism in Zaun. So during that moment when she was looking at the punching machine, she felt something, becoming emotionally vulnerable (whether she wanted to or not), so when she pulled the gun out and saw the bird, she returned back to her survival mode, cutting off her empathy again. However, I believe that she got slightly upset that something so small and non-threatening managed to get so close to her, and so she killed it, which I find greatly enhances the impact of when we see her lose it against the punching machine.
P.s Thank you for reading all the way to the end of my comment. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Let me know if you agree or not to my enterpretation of this scene.

my theory- Jinx may have been a very sickly child/child that got sick often (probably thanks to Zaun's quite literal toxic environment), Vi probably was taking care of her, raising Jinx (maybe their parents died when they were younger).
After whatever caused the fire and the things that led to it, Vi realised that she's not equipped to take care of her sister, making her leave in some orphanage, thinking that it would be better for both of them. From Jinx's perspective at so young age + traumatic event she felt left and betrayed by her sister.
(also i'm almost sure, for that few frames in between scribbles on vi's face in the fire flashback, she's crying, slapping jinx. whatever happened then - It broke her, also it is possible that was the first time she ever hit her. Jinx caretaker, Vi, hurt her. From personal experience slaps to the face are way more worse, because they not only it hurts physically - they hurt emotionally)

I think you misread some of her eye movements. I think they're meant to sell that she's got some analysis going on, thinking about how the machine works, what's broken, what's working. I think even her first sets of eye movements were her assessing the machine. It sort of conveys where her focus is and some of her skills. It doesn't look like curiosity to me, it looks more like someone cataloguing and taking stock of a machine. I think from the moment she picked up the plate she was intending on fixing it.
I'd probably say she fits PTSD but I don't think it's the best fit. I think looking up borderline personality disorder may give you some more interesting insights. These types of behaviors don't really fit neatly into any particular disorder, but I have felt as though she was written even from the beginning more or less as someone with borderline personality disorder and not PTSD.
One last note, I think you may want to take a very close look at Vi's face at the end of the slap. She's in pain there, and a lot of it. While she's clearly terrifying to Jinx at that moment, a small bit of Jinx is able to see past that rage and at some real grief. But more importantly, the fact that Vi was in so much pain at that moment could help build on what the remainder is about. Obviously Vi doing that was wrong, but why she's doing that even though it hurt so much to do so could elaborate on the rest of the story, perhaps on why Jinx needs to beat that high score. If that fire was her fault and she wanted to fix it and Vi told her off for that since she didn't want Jinx to go into a fire and die, there could be an element of Jinx needing to prove she's strong enough. Or maybe it tells us that Jinx killed several of Vi's friends, but that usually leads to self hatred, she probably wouldn't demonize or compete with Vi if that was what was in her memory.

It's s trange but, each Arcane trailer makes me more afraid of what we are going to have.
One thing you talked about Jinx in the past, were that she was a "walking chaos" without need for a reason. I think it was regarding her color story invading a high class party.
I didn't agree with the take, because, yeah i like that she isn't just "Random random bom bom lol for fun". I liked that she had an "aim". Well se could well turn to be a really pain the ass not only for Vi and Cait but for Camille.
But, i'm afraid that, they will "jokerfie(2019)" or "Cruellafie" her. Give her TOO much of a background for us to be sad for her and will end up passing a, not wrong but problematic message.
Spoilers ahead for AoT: You have been warned. I hope th youtube "Read more" cut here.
It'll feel the same for the crowd saying "BUT ERIN HAD A SAD PAST". Yeah he had. And still commited genocide.
That's my only fear with the Arcane, is that they will try to humanize Jinx too much.
BUT i can ben wrong, they may work on trauma, they may do a good work on that, and one thing you comented, maybe they are not blood sisters, and now that i think of it, it's a cool idea for a "found family" that isn't the happy story we normally see.
And i really hope, but my hopes on this are low, that possible the finale, will be the confrontation of Vi and Jinx inside the Vault of Piltover. Maybe, she did all that to have a 1x1 time with VI on a completly secure from the world, safe spot to confront her traumas?
And for wild theoring, Clag that is on the scoreboard may be their other friend, the big guy one. (AND PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GODS DO NOT LET NOT THEM MAKE THE BIG FELLOW PRE-TRANSFORMATION MUNDO)
