Inexpensive and Environmentally Responsible management of kitty litter

  • Here’s the scoop on cat poop.
    Dealing with kitty litter is often the unpleasant part of having cats. Clumping litter makes the cleanup much easier. However, the common clay clumping litters contain the naturally occurring sodium bentonite which expands to several times its size when wet creating the clumps.
    When bentonite is inhaled by cats or us it can cause inflammation and subsequent respiratory disease. Kitty litter also has a significant carbon footprint and is commonly sent to landfills taking up precious space.
    So why not try to use biodegradable and compostable materials and save the world.
    We have been composting cat litter for years now and it works great.
    If the end product will be used in the garden it must undergo full thermophilic aerobic composting thereby kill all pathogens. We use a chicken layer mix that is meant for baby chickens and is a crumble. This material forms nice clumps and is easy to clean up.
    I have also tried cat litter vermicomposting which also works well, but takes more time given the number of litter boxes we have.

    I have 22 rescues and was using three 35 pound buckets of Tidy Cat each week. It was a mess, my trash men were not happy and it fills up in the landfill. I researched what to do with clay litter and there isn't anything except landfill. That is when I discovered the chicken crumbles. The best I have found is Purina Flock Raiser as it is light in color. The darker do not clump well. It clumps good and can all be scooped each day. I do not compost the feces/urine as other animals can come in contact with it. I also use equine pellets from Tractor supply. $5.50 for 50 pounds. That is scooped each day and the pellets break down when urinated on and that is sifted to remove the sawdust. I do compost the sawdust.

    Sadly I tried doing this method but the rats kept stealing the cat feces and even the dog feces and the chicken pellets was just a bonus. I had so many rat babies and rats I probably saw 60 of them all at once. This method did not work for me sadly. It doesn't mean it didn't work at all for others it's just my environment was a buffet. Thanks for posting the video

      Charlie's Chicks interesting! You would think cat feces and urine would deter the rodents. I have heard of a parasite that when a rat or mouse eats the cat urine or feces, it actually gets into their brains and tricks the rodents into becoming sexually attracted to the cat... a mechanism that cats use to attract their food source. Perhaps treat your pets for parasites and try again? Cuz LOOK at how dark and rich his soil is! Maybe you can get hardware cloth and dig it into the ground around the perimeter of your composting area and make an enclosure? Maybe he doesn't have that problem because he turns so often and with a machine??

    I tried doing hardwood pellets because they're safer than pine but couldn't find the correct type. But 6 stores around me has this exact brand will definitely give it a shot. Cheaper than the clumping, which smells anyway, and eco friendly, awesome tip.

    Is that Chicken Starter? Did your cats take to it right away or did you have to mix it with regular clay cat litter for awhile before going all pellets?

      @GrowingABetterTomorrow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes the material we us is crumble chicken pellets or starter. We have a multi cat home and yes the cats have all done well with the change in litter without mixing the materials. There is a bit of difference in the clumping depending on the supplier. We get ours from a feed store now and it is great. So make certain that you try the crumble and not the intact pellets.

    I'm from Mexico and here I'm using the chicken food called "ponedora" and is been Awesome!!!
    Works perfectly because it does clump, keeps the odors and is more durable than kitty litter sand (I tried a lot of brands), I save around 50% of the cost using this chicken food and the most important is that my kitty likes and was super fast for her to make the change, literally just take 1 day.
    I really recommend it, if you are in Mexico use the chicken food "ponedora", give your cats 🐈 a better and non toxic option, which also will make you save money 😉. Thank you so much for you video

    Do you know if this would have/create aflatoxin mold contamination?

    • @2qlrn273
      @2qlrn273 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read elsewhere that in certain conditions it has, and caused several cats to become very sick before it was realized that the mold had formed! Sorry, I don't recall where I read that, but I think it was in comments . . . whether under a video or article, i don't recall.

    What about parasites? Do you use cat litter compost in the vegetable garden? That scares me. The parasites. Composting doesn't get hot enough to kill them so sterilizing it is nearly impossible from what I can tell. Any information would be useful

      exactly! he is misinforming people! cat waste is bad for the environment, it should be put in a bag & put in the trash.

    Since I don’t have land, I am hoping to find someone to take the kitty/doggo manure if I can successfully do this. Do you have a suggestion on where to look for folks that do this ?

      That's a really great question! I guess the idea is that I have are placing an ad on craigslist looking for anyone doing composting,contacting your local cooperative extension office and see if they know of any resources, and there's also a program and an app called nextdoor with a website nextdoor.com where you can join your local neighborhood and check surrounding neighborhoods and ask if anyone's interested in trying composting pet waste. Great question and I hope you have luck finding someone! Have a great day!

    this is a good video. Can this be used for rabbit litter box? I currently use Purina Tidy Cats Multi-Cat Clumping Kitty Litter, Free & Clean Unscented to collect the pee and it works well however I'm looking for an option that i can dump straight into my compost that i would eventually use in my container gardens and outdoor plants. Thank you in advance

    • @GrowingABetterTomorrow
      @GrowingABetterTomorrow  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it may work for rabbits however I would do a small test with them first to make sure that they aren't consuming the chicken crumble over their usual diet. We've been using the chicken crumble for years now and it's relatively inexpensive and breaks down well in the compost piles.
