Inside the NEW Amazon Fresh "DASH CART" grocery store (Franconia Springfield, Virginia)

- Amazon is heading to the Greater Washington, DC area in a big way! Amazon's second headquarter location (HQ2) will open in Crystal City, Arlington, VA, located just outside of DC.
For now, they're giving us a taste of whats to come with the grand opening of the first grocery store in the region, AMAZON FRESH, in Franconia, VA. I went to check it out, to see what the whole "contactless checkout" was all about. I happened to grab the only cart in the store that was out of battery. Check it out & see how it goes.
How it works:
Start by deciding if you'd like to shop with the Amazon Dash Cart, or stick with a normal every day shopping cart. With the smart cart you'll need to make sure that you have the Amazon App downloaded on your phone and that you're logged into your account. You scan your barcode and then you're ready to shop.
Place items into the cart and watch the smart screen pop up with everything you've already shopped. You can also add a list when you first get the cart, that will tell you what aisle all your items are in. No more running around the grocery store trying to find what you need!
Check out couldn't be more simple. Walk to the designated Dash Cart lane for check out, hit complete shop on your app and you're done!

Well, looks great and sorta like the Sams Club, I think, where you open the app but have to scan each thing with your phone. Same concept, though. No check out just walk out and show receipt. Done! Thank you Living Wage People for pushing this innovation which results in less jobs.

Wow, $7 for eggs! That is insane. You can get eggs from my neighbors' free roaming hens for pennies 😂 Another reason I love living rural.

Hated my experience at Amazon Fresh. It's like a dystopian future. Depressing, cold, and colorless. Employees seem unhappy to work there. Prices were higher than local markets. I won't be returning.

Yes they do! If you go to 8:34 on the video you can see the motorized shopping carts in the back. They don't appear to be "smart carts", but they are available! Hope this is helpful!

I noticed that they said you couldn't put anything in the top of the cart because it weighs everything. Can you put your purse in the cart? I have a toddler that would need to ride in the cart. Did they have carts that could carry a little kid or baby seat?
Looks like you wouldn’t be able to use the smart cart and would have to use the regular cart
Hi Rebecca! Great questions, you can put your purse in the cart. It will weigh it in the beginning so that it doesn't effect the system as you add more items in during your shop. As for you little one, you would need to get a regular cart! You can see one that I walk out with at the end of the video. I hope this is helpful!
What will happen if you put two different items in the cart at the same time?
it would pick it all up even if you tried to put 5 items at the same time...

All that data means Amazon has unfair advantage vis other stores.
The other stores probably have similar data since you still have to scan out.

I'm for it, for Amazon fresh grocery stores BUT as a former Amazon Fresh warehouse worker I think it's just a huge step backwards IMO. It defeats the purpose of ordering Amazon Fresh products online and Amazon Fresh warehouses. In Amazon Fresh warehouses the employees shop for the customers on what they have ordered online from their house no need for them to get out the house and shop. Jeff Bazos just bored with his unlimited money and want more Amazon in the world🤦♀️

What you didnt show was that after checkout you have to xfr everything from the dash cart to a regular cart just to get to your car. :)
The dash cart would be like the check out belt in a lane. You still have to lift the groceries into a cart to leave. But at least you don't have to REBAG them.
Fair point, Corey! Hopefully Amazon will come up with a solution to this extra step soon

Where is the Amazon Go store opening? I've been to a few and those are fantastic.
@@capsguy44 The store is in the Festival at Manchester Lakes shopping center, where there used to be a Shoppers Food Warehouse.
@@trekkeruss No, at the end of the video, she mentioned an Amazon Go store is coming to the area soon. Those are the stores where you don't need a special cart or even scan anything. You grab products from the shelf and walk out.
@@capsguy44 Sorry, poor reading comprehension on my part. According to news 4, the Go stored will be in DC, one on H street and the other on 14th street.

Whoa!!! At :53 the guy behind you has a Kaufland Bag from our German grocery store… groceries here in Germany are insanely cheaper than in usa… that guy is in for a big surprise when he sees his receipt. What a pro though…bringing his own bags…definately from Europe
There's lot of military and government here in the DC area, so it's just as likely that he's an American who just returned from a tour-of-duty in Germany. And brining your own bags is actually getting more common in the US. I do it all the time.
