NixOS is a lot of work for a single user with only a small number of devices. A lot of things work differently or strangely, and you really need to dive deep into doing things the Nix way for it to work. A good example of this is Python virtual environments. It is very much non-trivial to set up a Python virtual environment with libraries not in the Nix Packages repository. (Also, it breaks DOOM Emacs every time it updates.) I personally used it for 8 months on my gaming and work laptop. It made certain things (like setting up hybrid graphics for gaming) very easy, and it made other things that should have been simple needlessly difficult. The biggest disadvantage is that nothing is done in the proper Linux/UNIX way, and needs to be looked up online. This wouldn't be such a big deal if the documentation were good, but it is genuinely terrible. Many things are either entirely undocumented or are documented in some random blogpost, though some of it is in the (rather spotty) unofficial wiki, but the information is usually incomplete or unclear. But all of the above sources are united in being outdated and not useful.
And to be honest, even if the commits to bug fixes and new features were coming from Stalin, Polpot and Mao themselves, it doesn't matter. As long as they are safe and checked, improving the software, I couldn't care less. Did reiserfs become bad when the creator turned out to be a murderer? It's either a good piece of software or not. It does not depend on the reputation of the person who wrote it.

I'm not anti trans or anything like that but identity politics like this makes my blood boil. Forcing people to comply and show support is a good way to breed resentment even if it's something the person was originally positive about
Historically, Antifa was to the German Communist Party (KPD) what the Sturmabteilung (SA) was for the Nazi party (NSDAP). KPD and NSDAP were bitter enemies not because their politics were opposite (basically, the only difference were that the former believed in internationalism and the latter were German chauvinists - other elements of the program were based on the same socialist ideas), they were fighting each other because their main support came from common workers.
It seemed like the perfect blend of immutable and tinkering, so I ended up installing it on my laptop. Installation took ages, ok that's fine, you only have to do it once. Start adding packages to get basic stuff working, also slow, but bearable. I want hardware video decode, so I install the needed intel-media-codecs or whatever it's called. It doesn't work because the files are in a weird Nix-specific path instead of where VAAPI looks for them, I end up doing a sudo ln -s to fix that. I wanted to use a different LightDM greeter that wasn't already packaged for Nix, so I decide to try doing it myself. I've packaged stuff for multiple other package managers, how hard could it be, it's just a basic cmake project on GitHub. I tried following docs and also using a script to generate the package file skeleton, neither of which got me anywhere near a working package or even understanding the nixpkgs package file format. I would rate it pointless/10.

Do try nix. nix and NixOS is two different thing.
Alpine or Arch or Gentoo + Nix would be closest alternative to NixOS.
(Also, it breaks DOOM Emacs every time it updates.)
I personally used it for 8 months on my gaming and work laptop.

Why do politics ruin amazing software
'There will be no politics allowed at the school'
'Opens new school book and political stickers fall out of it'
We go on denying that there's a mental health issue with people who identify like this, out of a sense of being fair-minded, and then these narcissistic tendencies come out and show themselves, and we say 'it's so insane, how could this have happened?' Because it is insane. You can't just gloss over a problem pretend it's not there and then when the consequences come, we keep denying....
Or you could look further into the situation instead of taking one person's perspective as gold
Is this microsoft or IBM or some foreign actor attacking linux?
Apparently google, but probably all of the above.
How the duck do these guys keep getting kicked out of their own projects by a bunch of obviously malicious infiltrators?
We need a NixOS "Nazis Only" fork to make up for this.
Do we?
No
^
Uh, let's not.
That's the one that currently exists, we need a fork without these nazis.
Thanks for the summary, this was the only video I found covering this on YT. I’m disappointed and disheartened.
OSS should transcend politics but maybe I’m just old now?
look where tolerance has brought us
I just set up all my systems to use NixOS. It is a great ecosystem, too bad the boards of open source foundations tend to be subverted by insane people - just look at the rust foundation and the drama around that. Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile....
NixOS was great, hopefully someone makes a genuine competitor without this insanity.
@@mckendrick7672 GNU Guix. Not great if you need anything non-free, but still usable.
what to do when linux is "broken" through this and Windows is shitty too? BSD?
The biggest problem is all these projects are monolithic, so once the corruption sets in you have to make a huge change to escape. The best option would be to push for a microkernel like RedoxOS - perhaps even push for RedoxOS itself and fork it if they go the same direction. A microkernel is infinitely more manageable by the community than a monolithic kernel.
gnu hurd lol
@@mckendrick7672if you think Redox os won't end up horribly woke you're sadly mistaken. It's a rust project...
@@carnivorebear6582 There does appear to be a large woke element to the Rust "community", but Rust undeniably has merits, and the point still stands that a microkernel is far more manageable as a fork than a monolithic kernel. At this point there are woke elements to so many of these things that you just have to pick and choose your battles.
@@mckendrick7672 what like their code of conduct saying someone needs to get better at writing code is 'bad' and the goal of the project is to have a compiler that will make code usable no matter how badly written so 'evil coding skills' doesn't discriminate against 'minority groups'? rust is as it states on the tin. a degradation of things.
I mean, calling them Nazi because their mindset is different ? How far have we fallen.
Given that this continues, they have killed NixOS.
It's sad. NixOS was brilliant. The founder is brilliant, I hope he finds a way to create something better. I'm not installing that again...
TransOs will have a lot of back doors. Just a thought...
What's with the weirdos always gravitating towards IT.
Programming is inherently an intelligent male-dominated space. They can't create or produce anything of value so they have to worm their way in, seize what men produce, and then ruin it.
